Candidasa dasa : Dropped the MacBook Pro

Today I accidentally dropped my MacBook Pro.

I had it open on a stand on a desk with some headphones plugged into it. I took the headphones off my head, got up out of my chair, caught my foot on the (overly long) headphone cord and, as I walked away, the mac came crashing to the floor, yanked off the desk by the headphone cord.

*crash*
*bang*

So, I picked it up, dusted it off and opened the lid (which had snapped shut during the fall). Much to my surprise, it came right back out of sleep as if nothing had happened. Inspecting the case there was no damage, not even a dent. The only sign of the incident is that now pressing down a specific part of the case makes a slight squeaking noise.

Impressive, most impressive. The aluminum clad MacBook Pro is one tough, sturdy, well-built, resilient, solid piece of computing equipment that knows how to take a punch and keep on going.

As a comparison: I once dropped my old Dell Inspiron 4150 from a similar distance while it was turned off and inside a protective laptop bag (Kensington Saddlebag). It still worked after the crash, but the plastic case was cracked and severely warped, the DVD-drive wouldn’t fit anymore and several keys popped out. Dell, to their credit, later repaired the damage under warranty when the motherboard died.

(The hard drive on the MacBook Pros is protected during falls by a sudden motion sensor. There is a gyroscope built into the Mac which detects if it is accelerating too fast for its own good and then, in mid flight, quickly moves the hard drive into a protective “parked” position so it isn’t damaged by the inevitable impact.)

Krishna Camp : A New Years Revolution

A New Years Revolution

You say new years, I say new fears.
You say resolution, I say revolution.

Having fallen from the precipice of 2006 into the uncharted valley of 2-double-o-7, you may find yourself contemplating the upcoming year. You may even be one of the fashionable citizens of this earth planet who likes to make new years resolutions; might I suggest swapping a ‘v’ for the ‘s’? However, don’t take this the wrong way. It is with all humility and deference that I submit this significantly minor modification for your consideration. I don’t mean to impose and I certainly do not doubt that you have a deep and meaningful resolution. Nor do I assume any inability to abide by it for more than 3 weeks. It is not like that. I have full faith in the acumen and determination of the average consumer. Their great depth of knowledge and foresight have been proven time and again, as has their propensity to always act for the ultimate well being of present and future generations. (I write this as a 60 degree January breeze blows through my Northern United States window. In fact I haven’t even seen snow all year.)

This is the proposition: let us make our resolution a revolution, a revolution of consciousness. Not a revolution that is violent, non-violent, anti-government, pro-government, rather a revolution of the mind. It must be an internal revolution based on love.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
If we are what we eat, then we are even more so what we think. If our thoughts are centered on greed, exploitation, lust, envy, and power, what will we become? Our mind is the very foundation of our being. The way we live, think, act, talk, move, spend-it is all rooted in the mind. Our personalities and propensities are the external manifestations of our consciousness; our state of mind.
What is the largest problem, the largest disease facing the people of the world today? Its not cancer, its not aids, its not heart disease or Alzheimer’s. According to the latest statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health, it is mental illness (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/statisticsmenu.cfm). Over one quarter of the population of developed nations suffers from some form of serious mental illness. This is more then it has ever been, and it is still on the rise. In trying to pinpoint the cause, one may present many secondary factors, but the primary problem is: fear. Think about it. What is the root of all anxiety, all stress, all depression and all suicidal thought? It is only fear disguising itself in many different manifestations. We feel fear of losing power, position, prestige, money. We deal with fear of failure or facing the consequences of our actions. We have constant fear of the future and what new fears it will bring. What is that famous quote? “The only thing you have to fear- is fear itself”
Fear is also the favorite means by which the government/mass media oligarchy continues to mentally enslave the masses. This point as of late has been elucidated by many as the unabashed treachery and sinister schemes of the oligarchy has plummeted to such depths that it has become difficult to keep the wool over everyone’s eyes. Some of the recent documentaries by free thinking filmmakers come to mind. Unfortunately the stranglehold is far from being loosened. Primarily, this is because no viable solutions to the problem have been offered. Plenty of people are pointing out the problem, but how many are sincerely, intelligently, innovatively working toward a solution? The typical response is to get angry and complain. Then, back into the machine. Others may take it one step further and use their anger to fight back in one of the traditional, hackneyed methods, but to no avail. So, licking their wounds, they retreat back into the shelter of the familiar buzzing of the machine. Slaves are even more obedient after receiving a good beating from their master.
Even within medicine, it is a well known fact that when a disease is attacked time and again with the same medicine, eventually it will figure out how to beat the drug at its own game. The same is true when trying to fight the viral oligarchy spreading the fear disease. Don’t think that they aren’t able to counter any of the traditional methods of revolution even before they begin. Do not underestimate the forces of the enemy. They are not stupid people. They are not poor people. Practically speaking, all the resources of the world at their disposal. It is not very difficult for them to figure out how to squash your typical revolutionary action. They are old pros. And as long as you keep your mind and intelligence immersed in the realm which they control you are always going to be puppets on a string. What is this realm? It is the realm of quarrel and hypocrisy, of fast food and wholesale, barbaric animal slaughter. It is a realm of TV and movies, video games and commercial entertainment. A realm of selfishness and greed, lust and exploitation. It is the realm of the masses, the realm of fear. FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real. It is illusion, a misunderstanding of reality and lack of real knowledge. Fear is the link keeping us in the prison of our artificially flavored minds, obsequiously stamping license plates so that we can enjoy a few hours of cable TV, satisfying our fix for further fear.
The question naturally arises: what is the panacea for this disease of fear? Fear is rooted in ignorance, the ignorance of ones true identity and the dharma, or essential qualities and characteristics, of that identity. In a nutshell, the cure is knowledge. Not just theoretical knowledge, but realized, active knowledge.
Now this might not sit right at first pass; ‘cause I mean, really, how can just knowing something cure a disease? But stop a moment and consider the situation. The disease we are dealing with is mental illness, disease of the mind. The mind is that facility by which we come to know things. It ‘eats’ information and knowledge, ‘digests’ it, and then distributes it when and where it is needed. So in the same way we eat medicine when our body is sick, we can ‘eat’ knowledge when our mind is sick. Or, looking at it another way, when we are listless and diseased due to malnourishment caused by starvation or improper diet, we need to eat some nutritious food to regain our health. The same applies to the malnourished mind. If we spend all day feeding junk food (or nothing at all) to our consciousness it should be of no surprise when it gets horribly sick.
When our bodies are plagued by disease, we need to see a doctor to get a prescription. The same applies to the mind. Of course we have our psychiatrists and psychologists, and no doubt they serve a valuable purpose. Unfortunately, however, the rate of mental illness continues to increase, even in the wake of so many ‘advancements’ in psychology (ie more drugs made by the oligarchy). It seems that there is a pill for everything these days, so easy and convenient. But as was stated earlier, the mind eats - and is permanently affected - by knowledge, not pills. To mount a physical attack against a mental disease is an inherently flawed strategy. It is like putting a person with a fever in a bath of ice water and telling them “now you are ok. Your temperature has gone down”. An internal problem cannot be solved by external means. We are in need of a second opinion, a prescription for knowledge that heals, not pills that hide.
Try this on for size: Understand that you are more then just a physical body of flesh and blood, and a material mind of accepting and rejecting. Release the propensity for material intelligence of scheming and speculating. You are actually an eternal, blissful spirit soul. The soul happens to be donning a particular ‘body suit’ attained as a result of its past karma and desires. This suit is always changing throughout its short life, and will change completely at the time of death. But the real you, the soul, remains; reaping the fruit of its good or bad actions. In effect the body is like an animal, a pet that goes along with you everywhere. Like a big dog that you can ride in instead of on. As such this pet body has certain built-in inclinations. Pre-programmed (genetic) codes of action and desire processed and carried out by the very powerful CPU (the mind). Like most other animals, it likes to satisfy its senses as much as possible, for better or for worse. The dog is always busy satisfying his desire for food, sex, sleep, and power. All bodies have a built-in dog like nature, to varying degrees. Obviously, if we identify this body and mind as the self, we will behave like dogs.
One may argue here that most people have adopted a higher conception of self, one that takes into greater consideration the higher levels of cognizance and abstract thinking afforded by the especially advanced human mind and intelligence. As such many societies have developed moral ‘codes’ from which laws governing the generally accepted standards of behavior are generated. Thus rape, murder, senseless abuse, theft, etc, are not acceptable actions within most ‘civilized’ human cultures. Upon careful consideration, however, it can be observed that the activities of the human mind and intelligence are mostly just refined versions of animalistic bodily activities. Instead of beating the life out of a competitor whose girlfriend you are lusting after, then immediately raping her, humans prefer to subtly undermine and psychology assault the competitor until he is forced to fold, then delude the girlfriend through devious means. (Myriad other examples can and should be presented, but I will leave it to the reader to compile an extended list.) The intelligence has simply figured out how to steal, how to exploit and oppress others in a more ‘civilized’ way.
Take for example, the horrific saga of the European settlers in their dealings with the Native Americans. Or in more recent times the ‘war on terror’ in Iraq. These are Classic examples of the “I want what you got so give it to me or else” attitude. Thus we see that the highly developed human mind and intelligence, without proper knowledge, only serve to create more complex and wider reaching problems. History has shown that in the course of humans satisfying their lust and greed in more refined ways that they have not only hurt the few challengers who might pose a direct threat to such satisfaction, but millions of other innocent bystanders as well. Taking into account the effects of large scale war, nuclear bombs, and the environmental damage to the entire earth that has been a byproduct of this satisfaction of selfish desires, one begins to wonder whether we humans really are as smart as we think. After all, when was the last time you heard of a bunch of dogs building a nuclear bomb? Or releasing billions of tons of toxic substances into the earth that will adversely affect the quality of life for many generations to come? For that matter, when was the last time you saw a wild animal with a mental illness? It doesn’t happen. It is only when animals are forced to be pets and live like humans that their minds become diseased, but let us not dwell on this point, as the basic principles of the problem should by now be clear. Let us now try to understand the solution, knowledge of the eternally love-filled soul.
The soul is the source of life, and thus by definition consciousness as well. The essential nature of the soul is to love and serve. This is the food of the soul. Love and service is what the soul thrives on. The soul is happy and satisfied when it is able to love and serve. This can be practically understood by any honest person willing do deeply consider his own life experiences and the experiences of others. Since the soul is the root of life and consciousness, when the soul is happy the mind and body will automatically be happy, as they are just instruments of the soul. And vise versa. The mind is that instrument of the soul by which it ‘eats’ knowledge, the mouth of the soul. The consciousness, which is a direct manifestation of the soul, is inextricably linked with the mind, like the stomach is to the mouth. If the mind is filled with junk food, devoid of the loving, selfless, benevolent thoughts which nourish the soul, the soul will starve. When the soul starves, its direct manifestation, the consciousness, suffers. This in turn creates disease in the mind, to which it is inextricably linked, as a stomach infection causes putrid smells and even infectious vomit to emanate from the mouth. But when the soul is well nourished by beautiful, loving, selfless thoughts in the mind, it will thrive. When the soul thrives, the mind becomes supremely healthy and happy. When the mind is truly, deeply happy and satisfied, there is no longer any greed, lust, or desire to lord it over others because fear and its evil minions have been eradicated. Our revolution of consciousness has borne its sweet, sweet fruits.
……………………………………………………………………………………………..
In this day and age, a time of hate, exploitation and selfishness, it is truly a revolutionary act to be loving and selfless in all circumstances. To be a humble servant of everyone, always offering all respect to others and expecting none in return. To act in this way one must first attain proper understanding of his true identity and dharma as an eternal, loving soul distinct from the material body and mind. This revolution of consciousness, revolution of love is the only revolution guaranteed to be successful. Why? Love is its crux, its foundation. Not love as we sometimes describe it, but the real, pure love of the soul. Not physical, selfish, lusty-love. No politician, no government, no wealthy special interest group, no physical force can check real love, for real love is not of this mundane realm of duality and illusion. It belongs to the realm of spirit, of pure existence, a realm which is totally inaccessible to those still clinging to the shackles of greed and envy, who have not yet received the necessary qualification for entrance into the realm of pure love: the love itself.
How can one attain this qualification? By cultivating a deep desire for it, and living our lives in such a way that we become worthy recipients of the supreme gift of pure love, the golden ticket into the realm of real happiness and satisfaction. Once we enter, we are automatically protected from any of the pernicious forces seeking to check the progress of this revolution, as their weapons of delusion and destruction are ineffective here. The more that enter, the stronger the force of the revolution becomes and the stronger it becomes, the quicker it will counter the deleterious effects of fear in its myriad manifestations, such as mental illness, greed, selfishness, and hostility. When the blinders of fear are lifted, more people will be able to see things as they really are. They will understand that if they want to become fearless, if they really want to be happy, to be satisfied, they must actively participate in this revolution of consciousness. They must cultivate pure, loving thoughts while simultaneously removing the influence of fear driven, self centered thoughts. In so doing, their minds become freed from the shackles of fear and illusion. They will understand their true identity as spirit souls, eternal and full of love, and subsequently act in that capacity, cultivating and distributing that love, which is the only food that can fully satisfy us, the ultimate need of and greatest charity for all of our brothers and sisters riding with us on planet earth.

“At the risk of sounding ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by feelings of love.”

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Proof That Krishna Exists and Has a Sense of Humor

There was a story published on Brijabasi Spirit yesterday entitled “Cheese Cake and a Local Sudarsana Chakra“. You will have to have read that in order for the rest of this to make any sense.

Done? Okay. Bearing that in mind, also consider that I haven’t had any cheesecake at the temple for years, more years than I can remember. It just hasn’t happened, for whatever reasons. I haven’t been totally bereft all these many years, as it is not uncommon to go to a gathering at a devotee’s home and find a cheesecake served out. Typically, it will have been made by Ruci. But I haven’t had any maha cheesecake.

Anyway, I went to the Sunday feast at the temple mere hours after that story was published. The serve out was about over, and I was almost finished eating, just hanging out and chilling with some devotees, yukking it up. Rukmavati came to the table and said that a cheesecake had just been brought into the prasadam room, late, and did anyone at the table want some? Both Gopisa and myself volunteered for the chore of honoring some, and so, unbidden by me, cheesecake appeared on the table in front of me.

Coincidence? I could almost hear Krishna laughing.

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : An Amazing Program

Last night we had an amazing program at the home of one of the richest and most famous people in Mumbai. It is amazing to see the type of people that are taking to Krishna Consciousness here in Mumbai. It was a shame I didn’t bring the camera to take some photos. It was an amazing house. I took some notes during the lecture, it is definitely not everything Maharaj spoke but it is enough to get the idea of what he was speaking. It really was a wonderful lecture. Sorry the notes are a bit rough, not easy to type a lecture while someone is speaking.

H.H. Radhanath Swami Lecture January 7, 2007

Thanked Host, Maha Muni, and his father

He raised me, both he and my mother took great sacrifices to raise their children, not only material but essential moral and ethical principles honestly humility gratitude

After meeting SP all these gifts that my mother and father gave me could be used for the highest purpose, to share God’s love with others.

I came to India in 1970. I told my parents that I would be back in three months, four and half months later they received an email that I was hitch hiking to India. They received letters from the Himalayas where I was trying to convert them to become sadhus. And again there was no return email address.

And when I returned home in 1972 I was a hardened seasoned sadhu, my life had changed in every way, I tried to be gracious and kind to them and they really to be gracious and kind to me, but they couldn’t understand.

I was sleeping in the backyard, offering mangala arati to a picture of Radha and Krishna and chanting 64 rounds.

When you’re young sometimes there is not much diplomacy, but the gratitude we shared was not reduced despite contrary lifestyles.

Seventeen years later they still couldn’t understand with my life, until they came to India. The first program at sea face park on the terrace my mother and father cried in joy to see my efforts to have a positive effect in peoples life. After that program they embraced me and said we are proud of you, it was worth waiting all these years to say from our heart we are proud of you.

On elephant island my mother got a culture shock a monkey stole her purse.

We went to Jaipur and to Agra an it was my birthday. My mother said we haven’t been with you on your birthday for twenty years well give you anything. Do you mean it? Yes. We’ll go to Brindavan and we’ll clap our hands and chant Hare Krishna all day. They agreed.

I’ll never forget his first step. I told him to take his shoes off and leave them in the car. He took his first step directly into a fresh warm pile of cow dung. That was another culture shock. People in the west do not understand the antiseptic qualities of cow dung. We went to many temples, in Radha Raman we sat and chanted for an hour. It was very nice. They only problem was my mother asked where can I find a restroom. The only restroom was the field. She said, “I’ll hold it until I get to dheli.” Then we went to Krishna Balarama mandir, and the restaurant. I asked them which temple did you like best. My mother, “The one with the bathroom.” Srila Prabhupada ki jaya! They bought two sets of deities as a gift to Nathji, and Krishnacandra Prabhu.

Ten years later they came back. And again they had a wonderful experience. My mother was getting ill and the care that that family offered her was amazing. They didn’t have their servants do, they did everything personally. She had alzheimers and I remember when she was getting more advanced in that phase, she wouldn’t speak, we tried to get to her to speak and she wouldn’t speak anything. Then my father said hare Krishna and she would respond hare Krishna. Krishnacandra and Radhapriya would come and visit her and just hold her hand, and my father said even our own relatives do not have such sympathy for her. And they decided to send her to Brindaban to leave her body. But she died, the family unanimously decided to let me take her ashes to the ganga. Something extraordinary. Although it was very difficult for him to come at his age he really wanted to be with you again and I very grateful

Gratitude is a quality of the by which we can grow in any situation, without gratitude even in the most favorable situation we cannot really progress.

Some people even if you give them something they will want more. That is way it is not good to spoil children. Because when you grow up you do not get whatever you want. Then there is anxiety that is difficult to overcome. Whatever you get you feel you deserve more. And when you don’t get what you want you complain and blame others. Then there are those who are grateful when they get good things, but very disturbed when difficulties come. But a very principle of BG is that we should be grateful for what ever god sends us. The good things we should feel I don’t deserve this, and the difficulty and the pain experiences we can learn and grow, we can learn to come closer to God, we can learn to improve our own life, but those lesson the Lord is speaking within the heart can only be heard when there is gratitude.

Lord Caitanya gave all credit to others. He said whatever good qualites I have is due to my mother. He weeped with gratitude when his father left. And he gave all credit to his devotees. Krishna is supremely grateful. If you take one step to Krishna he will take a million towards you. That is gratitude. Krishna is laying on a banyan leaf sucking his own toe, why, because such great personalities give up everything for for a speck of dust of his lotus feet, because he is so grateful to his devotee, Krishna told durvas, you are so great and have come to me for protection but I have no power to protect you because you have offended my devotee. Durvas was a yogi with tremendous mystic powers and Ambarish Maharaj was a grihasta with family and job, Krishna told Durvasa Muni “I’m living in his heart if you hurt him you hurt me and if you satisfy him you satisfy me”

Srial Prabhupada on his Vyasa puja in early seventies, devotees from all over Europe and America came to celebrate and glorify him and worship him as their master who led them from darkness to light who taught them morality and love. And when Prabhupada spoke he gave all credit to his disciples. It is all of you who have done so much to help me do something for my guru, and that gratitude inspired everyone to do more and more.

When we are grateful we can be humble, without gratitude humility is at best a theory.
And humility is foundational principle by which love of god can develop.

What is it that separates us from God. Ahamkar. In this world people are considered great if they have enormous pride, but in culture societies the virtue of humility is honored above all else. In my studies I have found that the foundational principles of Jesus teaching is humility

In his most famous speech, blessed in poor heart, blessed in the meek, both in this world in the next the lord with fill us with favor if we have a humble heart and approach him with that.

One of the most often quoted slokas when a person is undergoing serious tribulation with folded palms and tears in their heart pray I know that I deserve more, that person alone can attain the kingdom of god

So when difficulties come we have an opportunity to practice this principle

It doesn’t take a great person to blame others and complain

It is the nature of this world that there will heat and cold, honor dishour, happiness and distress, to the degree we are attached to one we suffer when the other comes.

How do transcend dualities when you enemy is shooting arrows to kill you. How to transcend dualities in the work place when there are “enemies.” We transcend dualities by seeing the merciful hand of god in everything coming to lift us up, and offer the fruits of all our action to serve god. If we are in a mood of devotion service we immeadiately transcend dualities. And to establish that consciousness that Lord has given us His holy name. Kaler dosa .. .so much danger and pain ful conditions in this age, but there is a special benediction, the Lord has descended with all of his potencies, and beauty and sweetness. The preliminary conception of God is as a father ready to punish, in the western world people are trained to fear god, so that out of fear they avoid sin. But as we become more cultured in spirituality we understand the beauty sweetness and love of god. Krishna means all attractive, how many people are attracted to fear. Krishna is all attractive because his beauty kindness and love frees us from all fear. It is said that the oceanic obstacles and sufferings that are inhearant in the material world are reduced to the size of the foot print of a calf. Krishnas qualities are so infinitely attractive so magnetic to the soul that it is natural to give up sinful activities. When we experience the higher taste of Krishnas love we are satisfied. The great souls simply want to serve Krishna. Lord Caitanya prayed na dhanam. . . That is love. We can theoretically speak these things but to really feel them is only possibly if we’re experiencing Krishna. All his pastimes all his beauty all his love are all contained in his holy name. Golokera prema dahan. . .the holy name has descended from the highest abode. In the spiritual world everyone is chanting. That same name god has himself descended to taste. Govinda Das prays in woshiping you I become fearless. Krishna is like light Maya is darkness. When the sun arises there is no need for any separate arrangement for light. If with a grateful heart and an attitude sincerely wanting to serve others, and a life guided by spiritual masters, when we chant the holy name in that setting Krishna attracts our hearts and our dormant Love of God awakens, nitya siddha. . .Our mind and sense have become so externalized that we have forgotten our internal treasure. If you have a crore of rupees but you forgot where you put it you will be sleeping on the streets like everyone else.

And what happens when love of god begins to awaken, it gives us such relief that the quality of compassion awakens in our heart. It is the natural by product of Love of god. It is a great gift that we have all been given, and each and every one of us have the free will to neglect it or accept it accordingly. If you have a grateful heart you can appreciate a gift. If your hungry you can appreciate food. If your full you cannot appreaciate. We must be hungry for Krishna. A hungry man will be grateful whatever he gets. If we are grateful we will be happy in any situation and we will learn and grow. Srila Prabhupada was grateful to anyone who would help him. When he was living in the bowery, bums, criminals, alchoholics, but Prabhupada was so kind to them. He was the only man on earth who gave them any respect, they would open the door for him and from his heart he would say thank you. That is how he made hippies into happies. He asking nothing in return, and is eternally grateful to anyone who just accepts it. When he met any of the parents of his disciples, he was so grateful, when Brahmananda Prabhu took intiation, Prabhupada made them offer obeisances and touch her feet with gratitude then take your beads. In America this culture is not known. Through these incidents Srila Prabhupada is teaching all of us how to be grateful.

Today in this beautiful divine atmosphere I would like to offer my gratitude to my father, my spiritual father, and to all of you.

Would you like to speak?

Maharaj’s Father:
In 1941 Pearl Harbour was attacked on dec7 on dec 8th I joined the marines, they discharged me because I had a hernia, the group I was in went to Guatemala and most of them died so we can thank Krishna that I had that hernia, I’m very grateful to be here tonight, thank you very much.

Radhanatha Maharaj:
I am the product of hernia, my true identity has been revealed. It does show that we don not know the plan of destiny. A difficult situation may be paving the road for something wonderful, we should always look for the light in every situation. What do you like more, here or that mountain in New Vrindaban.
Everyone laughs.

Then as usual Maharaj leads us in ecstatic kirtan. It was amazing to see one of the most famous people in Mumbai dancing like a small child.

Sita-pati dasa : Don't waste time

I just got a box of papers from Wellington, where they have been holding them in storage for the past six years. I've been reading through them and becoming inspired by my realizations from back then. It seems like I have been going steadily backwards in my spiritual life these past years. I'll publish some excerpts from them.

Offer respects to everyone, but understand that their association is not always desirable. This is neither good nor bad, right nor wrong, but we have a particular taste, a particular way to see things, and while we recognize others' right to their perspective, we also have our right to ours.

Don't waste your time criticizing others. If you see something that you think is not right, then do better yourself. Your actions speak louder than millions of their words. Know your own heart and be firm in your conviction to be true to it. Read Srila Prabhupada's books, chant Hare Krishna with a sincere desire to become purified and to attain some attraction for Krishna, and keep association of devotees whose goal in life is to do the same thing...

Don't waste your time and energy. Read Prabhupada's books - chant with sincerity to cleanse your heart. Have an idea. Make it happen. Be inspired by Prabhupada's efforts. Give proper respect to powerful Vaisnavas who preach widely and inspire many people to surrender. Don't be attached to perceptions of women, followers, or wealth. Remember that purity is the force and look within yourself to see where you are failing to attract people to your cause. Krishna is so attractive, if we can purely represent His party, how is it that people will fail to come? I am very sure that if one becomes free of sex desire many people will be inspired to follow them. This is where we should focus our efforts and our criticism - how to perform anartha-nivritti and bhajana-kriya, artha-pravrtti.

Bhaktivedanta Coaching : The Best Leader

The best leader gives much more to the people he serves than he takes from them. By giving them knowledge, attention and care, by showing them that he has their best interest at heart, he earns the right to lead them, to accept service from them and to correct them when needed.

New Vrndavan, USA : Memorial for H.G. Sucirani devi dasi

title-page11.gif

January 5th marked the 3rd anniversary of the departure of H.G. Sucirani devi dasi, my husband (Ananda Tirtha Prabhu)’s mother. We held a small memorial program in honor of this greatly respected and loved Vaisnavi.

A special addition to the program was the participation of H.G Jagattarini devi dasi, a senior disciple of Srila Prabhupada, who phoned in from Australia. The message was grave: “Death is coming, are you ready?” Devotees took it to heart with gravity and introspection:

The 5th of January is also auspicious as it is the birthday of Chris Prabhu, author of “Let It Begin”, so the celebration was two-fold:

Bhaktivedanta Coaching : Focal Point

I read this story recently.

Once upon a time, there was a major technical problem at a billion-dollar atomic power plant. It was slowing energy generation and reducing the overall efficiency of the entire operation.

The plant's engineers could not identify and solve the problem, so they brought in one of the nation’s top consultants on atomic plant construction and engineering to see if he could determine what was wrong. The consultant arrived, put on a white coat, took his clipboard and went to work. For the next two days, he walked around, studying the hundreds of dials and gauges in the control room, taking notes and making calculations.

At the end of the second day, he took a black marker out of his pocket, climbed up on a ladder and put a large black "X" on one of the gauges.

"This is the problem,” he explained. “ Repair and replace the apparatus connected to this meter and the problem will be solved."

He then took off his white smock, drove back to the airport and flew home. The engineers disassembled the apparatus and discovered that, sure enough, this was the cause of the problem. It was soon repaired and the plant was back up to full capacity.

About a week later the plant manager received a bill from the consultant for $10,000 for “Services rendered.”

The plant manager was surprised at the size of the bill, even though this was a multi-billion dollar nuclear facility and the problem had been costing an enormous amount of money in lost generating capacity. After all, he reasoned, the consultant had come in, stood around for a couple of days, written a black "X" on one of the gauges and then returned home. $10,000 seemed like a high fee for such a simple job.

The plant manager wrote back to the consultant. "We have received your bill. Could you please itemize your charges. It seems that all you did was to write one "X" on a single gauge. $10,000 appears to be excessive for this amount of work."

Some days later, the plant manager received a new invoice from the consultant. It said, "For placing "X" on gauge: $1.00. For knowing which gauge to place "X" on: $9,999."

This simple story illustrates the most important single principle of success, achievement and happiness in life. Your ability to determine where you put the "X" in each part of your life is the critical determinant of everything that you accomplish, or fail to accomplish.

This "X" is your focal point. This is the one thing that you can do, at any given moment, to get the very best result possible for you in that area. Your ability to choose the correct time, place and activity to place your "X" has more of an impact on your life than any other factor.

In this blog, you will learn a practical, proven and powerful ideas and tools that you can apply in every area of your life to achieve better, faster, easier results than you ever imagined possible.

Just as the sun’s rays, focused through a magnifying glass, can create intense heat and fire, your intelligence and abilities, focused and concentrated on a few key activities, can enable you to accomplish vastly more than the average person, and in far less time.

Just as normal light and electricity concentrated into a laser beam can cut through steel, your ability to choose and decide upon the most vital element of any situation will enable you to perform at extraordinary levels in any area of endeavor or activity.

Namahatta.org : Regarding "Pain in Spain"

phanisvara das

Several comments to this article say that it's publication was not a good idea: it's been perceived as sensationalist, blaming the boys and girls in question, rather than helping anybody.

First of all I want to apologize that I didn't think of hiding the faces in the article right away: that would have been a common-sense precaution. It took an ex-gurukuli's suggestion to bring that to my attention (thanks, HKD). It's not fair to single out those few teenagers shown in the pictures; one of them I know personally, and I know that sex-and-drugs-and-rock'n-roll is not his main objective in life.

Sri Sakti, the author of the article, grew up in a traditional vaisnava family, protected from gross materialistic influences most devotees in the west are exposed to throughout their lives. She was simply shocked, I believe, at the degree to which these influences penetrate the consciousness and behavior of many young devotees, even during a 'spiritual retreat'.

My objective in publishing the article on namahatta.org's front page was not to blame the kids present at the festival, not at all, but to raise what I be live is an important issue, especially for congregational devotees in our movement.

Book Distribution News : stories

Our Humble Obeisances Jaya Srila Prabhupada

Regards from most enlivening Simhacalam sankirtana-new year- festival in Germany. Bookdistributors from several European countries attended. H.H.Sacinandana Swami, H.H.Kavicandra Swami, H.G Krsna-ksetra Prabhu, H.G.Ravinda Svarupa Prabhu, H.H.Kadamba Kanana Maharaja gave enlightening lectures and held nice kirtanas, H.G.Brahma-Muhurta prabhu introduced project of NE-BBT in professional way.

Our flights back to Finland were from Prague, and we were fortunate to participate to famous local Harinama, led by "The Aindra of Prague", Vidya-Vacaspati Prabhu. Chanting was that enlivening that even several tourists got almost ecstatic.

There are some marathon stories from Finland:

I was distributing books in a parking lot in a little bit notorious Helsinki suburb Jakomaki. It went alright but at the end of the day I got tired of hiding from the security guards that kept coming out of the store to take out the drunkards. Krishna gave me determination to go out still one hour in the city center and He sent a boy who said something I don't hear too often in the street: "Is this Hare Krishna? I am particularly interested in Krishna." Then he asked some philosophical questions and said seriously: "I am an atheist but lately I've felt that actually I need God. I just don't know who He is. But Krishna attracts me the most." He also gave his contact information and said he wants to come to the temple to learn more.

Earlier that day in Jakomaki I met a Nigerian man who got very enthusiastic upon seeing the SSR. He recognized Srila Prabhupada and said that he used to associate with devotees in Nigeria and in the US, San Diego. He didn't read Finnish but he took a CD and a temple invitation and upon leaving told me: "You guys have to drag me back!"

Meeting these persons gave me a little bit realization how I've forgotten Krishna altough I may speak about Him and the books all day, I forget that Krishna is constantly in the lives of everyone arranging things, not only in the lives of those who are already practicing devotees.. But Krishna is the Supreme friend of everyone and in such amazing ways connects conditioned souls with His mercy more and more.

In this connection Her Grace Caitanya Lila Mataji from Italy shared her realization to me on Simhacalam Sankirtan Festival that Krishna is so kind, He is the best friend of everyone - Krishna never lets you down but He is always there. If one only has even a little desire to please Guru and Krishna, then Krishna helps and amazing things will take place.

One more funny and a little sad but in the end wonderful event: Many days on marathon I distributed books in the Helsinki metro tunnel with thousands of people rushing through to buy Christmas presents etc. One day I met exceptionally many drug addicts. Usually my mantra is: "Here's a book for all friendly looking people" but this day besides this mantra I had another one I used often: "Hello! Are you coming from the methadone treatment?" These people could easily admit the misery of material existence but they seldom had any money. They would donate whatever they had to the temple, sometimes only 5 cent, and two of these people took books.

All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga!

Your servant, Ahaituki Bhakti devi dasi _________________________________________________________________________

Devis and dogs

Haribol! I offer my humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of all the Vaisnavas, all glories to Srila Prabhupada. Greetings from the transcendental christmas marathon 06! I am bhakta ilkka, I did my third marathon. I am going to India for the first time on Gour Purnim. I tell you some small incidents from the marathon. First I pay my obeisances to Caitanya Ananda prabhu who is our maha-rati. He taught my how to distribute. Unfortenately he had trouble with the body and couldn't join us in the street. Still he distributed so many sets by the phone. In Jyväskylä I was doing the market's parking lot with Avadhuta Candra. I went to one white car were a middle-aged woman was waiting for her husband with this dashing white dog. I could immediately understand this lady's affection to her dog. So throwing the book in I started to glorify her dogs with poetic words. In few moment she was in such ecstasy that she impatiently asked the price. I told her 5, 15, 20. She gave me 20 euro and asked for change so instead I gave her a CC too and she was pleased. The two books were distributed in 2 minutes with nice donation. "Bye, bye Minnie! Thanks a lot!" I said to the dog as I left. Other time at Heinola market's parking area I met another middle-age lady with her friend`s boxer. She was waiting for her friend to pick up this poor animal. I gave her the book and started glorifying. I said that this dog is amazingly at the same time terribly ugly and very beautiful. You know these boxers are quite wrinkled from the face. Within no time woman happily took the mercy. I went on and later I ran in to her friend who had just got the same dog back. I fired the very same mantras about her funny little friend so she took 2 books! On the way back from Lapland we stopped at Pyhäjärvi, a small village in the middle of Finland. After 2 hours in the morning maybe 1 book was distributed. There were only grannies available and they were so deep in tamas that they could hardly hear anything when I spoke. I started to freak out little bit but went on. In the afternoon I founded the way. I started to approach these 40-60 year old guys. I went at their cars and threw the book in their laps with force. Then, padding heavily in their shoulder I started to talk about fishing and hunting with them, about how many elks they shot lately and about the craziness of the world nowadays. In this places you can find real forest men! At the end of the conversation it was not hard to tell them to buy the book. Even the day was very hard I managed to give 35 books by the mercy of guru.

We finished the marathon in Turku were CA prabhu usually goes for final days. Now myself was the modest representative of him. In the center I met this young girl in black clothes and hair. She immediately took 2 CC since she already had all my other books. "I already have so many of these. I collect them!" she said. "Have you red them all already?" I asked. "I have red non of them. My plan is to collect them all first and then read. I don't want to wait for half year between every book till I meet you guys again." I thought that this teen had a strange attachment for the books and devotees so I said: "I think you were one of us in your last life but you got so attached to woman that you became one!" "Wow! That's cool!" she said. I met two young girls who were sisters. I came by them when they got up from their car. They were nice breezy teenagers and started asking this and that when they heard I'm a yogi. When I told them I'm a Hare Krishna they both jumped with their hands up and started to chant the Maha-Mantra jubilantly. This is due to Tattvavada Prabhu's school preaching. They had heard his lecture on Krishna consensus in their high school and it had left obviously very positive impression in them. They cheerfully both bought a book and went a way very happy. I beg for your causeless mercy to go on in book distribution and give more and more books out for the pleasure of Sri Guru and Gouranga.

New Vrndavan, USA : Cheese Cake and a Local Sudarsana Chakra

by Srila Jiva Goswami dasa

Let me try to describe The Prasadama Hall down at Bahulabhana, in Old New Vrindabana. It was a big rectangular room, with a marble floor. I remember three doors. One door, on the back wall, led to a shop where projects were carried out. Another door, in the front, led to a little room with sinks, transfer containers and utensils. This room was used as a staging area for Servers.

The third door was the way in; the entrance. Devotees would come in this door, by the big deep sink n front of the hall where everyone could wash up after eating. We were expected to take a rag and go back and clean the area where we’d taken Prasada.

When Prasadama was ready to serve, Devotees would enter in response to the tolling of the big bell which hung by the kitchen. Devotees took seats on the floor. Those against the walls sat with their backs to the walls. Those in the center formed back to back rows.

The Devotee in charge would call for servers, and as many volunteers as needed would come forward to perform the act of Serving out Prasadam. The servers generally received very nice special plates which would be set aside for them in the process of serving. These special server plates were laced with the most wonderful Maha

One day I brought with me one of those high quality water guns. It was the kind of gun which would shoot pretty accurately for a distance of 20 to 30 feet. I sat with my daughter, about half way down the hall, with our backs against the wall.

Then, to everyone’s amusement, when a Devotee came in, I’d squirt, from so far away and for the new arrival, so unexpectedly and surreptitiously, that my target would have no way of knowing the source of the assault.

Skleek, skleek! I got Soma when he came in. Soma at first ignored the droplets. I gave him another blip. He looked around then. Everyone laughed at his round eyed innocence. He knew then he was the focal point of a practical joke and he laughed too. It was great fun. The mission then was to find the hidden clever squirter: me.

I’d shoot, then hide the gun and try to look innocent. Of course it did not take long to discover who was doing the shooting, and upon discovery, I’d move on to the next target.

On that afternoon, the Prasadama Hall was roaring with laughter and delight.

Bimbadhara Prabhu came in next, and all eyes turned expectantly to me. I gave him a shot. Everyone laughed. Next to me, my daughter, whose name then was Vimala, squealed with delight. Bimbadhara, one of the tallest and strongest of the Old New Vrindabana Devotees, held out his hand as if he was sampling rain.

The sweet nature of these powerful souls struck me then and moves me now in recollection. There was a time when Karmis drove up and down the main road, shooting at Devotees. It was Bimbadhara who found a piece of high ground, and like Atlas, lofted a cinder block up high over his head and then pitched it, like a planet, at the careening vehicle. The cinder block caught the car at the windshield, the car crashed and the drive by shooters and their driver were apprehended. The exploits of Bimbadhara are legendary. He was not to be trifled with.

Now Bimbadhara held out his hand so sweetly as if he was sampling soft spring rain. I gave him another shot. He spotted me quickly, and gave me a smile and a nod. It was all in good fun.

Next to me, Vimala took her drink and tossed it on my krta. “Sorry,” she said. Later she explained that she was trying to see how close she could come to splashing me without actually splashing me. Because of my squirting with the water pistol joke, I really couldn’t complain.

But then Madhava Ghosh came in. Ghosh was physically small, and somehow linear with his focus, it seemed to me. He wore very thick glasses. He was grounded and unpretentious. When I was a Bhakta, I’d found myself assigned to work with Madhava Ghosh in the glass trailer, where we sorted bits of glass for the Tiffany style lamps the Community was making at the time. I’d asked Madhava Ghosh if he’d been twice initiated.

“Yah,” Gosh replied. I liked the sound of his voice. It had an almost sandy alto quality to it. “Why?” He looked at me and pushed his glasses up on his nose with his thumb.

I looked at the piece of blue glass I was about to put in the cardboard box with other pieces of blue glass. The view from the trailer window was the door to the Men’s Bath House. “Because you’re not wearing your Brahmin Thread,” I said. “You are supposed to wear your thread if you are twice initiated.”

Madhava Ghosh did not miss a beat. “Tell me that after you’ve been around for eight years,” he said without malice.

I went on with the sorting. He was right. Time does tell.

Now, a few years later, it was Ghosh who came in at the front of the Prasadama Hall. I felt hundreds of pairs of eyes swing in my direction. Everyone was smiling. I took out the gun, gave allowance for gravity’s deflection, and … Skleek! Skleek! It was on.

When the water hit him, Ghosh did not react like everyone else. He immediately flexed his knees and glared out at everyone. His response was so blatantly different, I let him have one full on, as much as possible at that distance. The Devotees roared with laughter and appreciation.

Ghosh looked directly at me, nodded and picked up a bowl from the sink in front of the hall. He turned on the tap and began to fill the bowl with water. It was a big bowl and it was taking a little while. I was thinking, “Now wait a minute, that is a little over the top in terms of pay-back.”

As if he had read my mind, Madhava Ghosh looked over his shoulder at me. The bowl he held under the gushing tap was nearly full. Madhava Ghosh gave me a grin the likes of which I’d never seen. I was already wet from the splashing given by Vimala. I did not want this.

Madhava Ghosh came towards me very quickly, considering the fact that he was holding a brimming big sloshing bowl of water. The Devotees were all making sounds which seemed to me like “Oh oh.”

I got up and ran. I was able to navigate around the rows of seated, shrieking and laughing Devotees and out the door. Ghosh was definitely impeded by his cargo, the bowl of water.

Safely outside by the kitchen, I stopped and thought about how I might get back in without getting splashed. Something made me look up. Madhava Ghosh was on the stairs almost directly overhead, that same hard frozen smile on his face, his eyes looking particularly beady behind the very thick lenses of his glasses. He was getting ready to pour and I felt like the focal point of a Norden Bomb Sight.

Immediately I ran off. Ghosh came right along after. Again his weapon, the bowl of water, slowed him down, and I was able to escape for the moment.

For some time thereafter, that scene was repeated. I’d find refuge, pause to gather my thoughts, and form a plan if I could. I’d look up, and here came Madhava Ghosh. He was determined. He was relentless. Sometimes he bore a freshly re-filled bowl. The shop, where Krpacarya coaxed fine furniture from raw materials, the path up the hill behind the cabin, the steps by the office, the patio behind the temple in the farmhouse, no matter where I ran and paused, when I looked up, here came Madhava Ghosh, grim, and sloshing.

It seemed useless to run anymore. Over by the men’s bath house, I turned to face the watery music. It didn’t seem fair to me, a couple of squirts to yield this total dousing? What could I do?

Then I remembered a night in the office at Bahulabhana. The watchman, Janalada, and several advanced Devotees had been in the office with me. I was doing the late shift on the phones. Chedi Raja came in with a huge plate of Maha to share with everyone. As the least senior of the Devotees there, I had held back as they all dived and enjoyed. I’d been anticipating the very gracious nature of the Devotees, and the way I’d be given a chance. But that had not happened. They’d taken every single crumb and morsel, Madhava Ghosh in particular, relishing in my face as he made big portions of sumptuous cheese cake disappear. I was not attracted to the Maha as I was to the exquisite transcendental courtly nature of the Devotees, but on that evening, I got handled roughly by His Embrace.

I’d been simultaneously fascinated by the demonstration of all out spiritual gusto and wounded by the aggressive flavor with which I was disregarded.

One takeaway from that incident had been a realization that Madhava Ghosh was not only crazy for Maha, but cheesecake in particular was very attractive to him. Suddenly I was inspired.

Ghosh had the bowl back, ready to swish forward and douse.

“Why won’t you stop?” I asked.

“You wet me, I’m going to wet you.” Ghosh returned. The boy was fair, but driving on a narrow path. I can close my eyes now and see him, roller blading uphill, arms wind-milling like those of an Olympic Speed Skater, and that look Ghosh gets, that peculiar intense focus on the distant, fine target, a target so particular it is seen by perhaps no one but Krsna Himself.

“Stop!” I held up the palm of my hand.

Madhava Ghosh pivoted his body so the big bowl of water moved through its arc without spilling too much. “Why?” Ghosh asked. He was smiling, but he was grim.

“I’ll buy you off.”

“You mean you want to bribe me?” Madhava Ghosh seemed at least temporarily fascinated. “With what?”

“Half a Maha Cheese Cake,” I said. By that time I was a Pujari. I could do that. We were talking Pastime. I was delving in Ghosh’s “weakness:” Maha. Cheesecake Maha.

“Let me get this straight,” Madhava Ghosh shifted from side to side. Sometimes he reminded me of Jimmy Cagney. “You’re promising,” (he emphasized the word “promise”) to give me one half of a Maha Cheese Cake if I agree to stop?”:

“Yuh,” I asserted.

“Done!” Ghosh stuck out his hand to shake, as if I might change my mind. If anything, Madhava Ghosh was true to his straight ahead attractions.

Me? I was and am so very attracted to and want to serve the Devotees. Everything the Devotees do seems to me to be just another way to chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

During the one week study break from our MIHE courses,I decided, along with another student, to visit Vrindavan.

Arriving more than 12 hours later than expected, we were both exhausted, but relieved to have finally made it. However I didn't truly appreciate being back in Vrindavana once more until I heard Aindra's kirtan that evening.

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : Vyasa Puja Experience

The celebration yesterday was amazing. There were four thousand, disciples, well wishers, and friends in attendence. It ws really and ocean of devotees

Here is the poem I read yesterday, it was a really wonderful experience on many levels, the best part was having my false ego smashed, Krishna is so expert at purifying us.

Govinda Prabhu told me in advance that I would be speaking after Jaya Gauranga prabhu, I was quite excited, especially because I was proud of how well the poem came out, of course really there is nothing to be proud of, becuase poetically it is not that great, and spiritually it is all the mercy of my guru anyways, but nevertheless being a foolish conditioned soul I was pround, and I knew that everyone would appreciate it and glorify this, so really this offerig was more of a glorification of my self than of my guru. It was getting late and I was wondering if I would get a chance to speak, my false ego was getting agitated. But then the time came and they asked Jaya Garuanga Prabhu to speak. I breathed a sigh of relief but I was still worried, then it happened, they asked Maharaj's God brothers, Gopal Krishna Maharaja and Danavir Maharaj to speak. I was heartbroken, or ego broken. I was sure that was going to be the end of the program as it was already quite late. After the initiatial dissappointment I realized that it was for the better and that I really am not qualified to speak, because it just makes me proud, and I was happy understanding my diseased condition and that this was the perfect medicine for me. As soon as I came to this realization, they resumed offerings of the disciples and asked me to speak. Amazing how Krishna works.

It was really beautifull experience reading my offering. I had only one other time personally read my offering to Radhanath Maharaj and because it was written as a leter I had to read from the paper the whole time. This offering was a poem and I had the refrain memorized to I could speak it while gazing directly into Maharaj's eyes, and he was looking directly at me very loving ly and very intensely, that was a wonderful experience, eye to eye union between guru and disciple. The other wonderful thing was that what my false ego wanted most was to be appreciated by Govinda Prabhu and by Radhanath Maharaj, neither of them said anything about the offering. Even though I was sitting very near to Govinda Prabhu he didn't say a word when I returned, I really felt he was acting in perfect accord with the will of the Lord. But I couldn't ressit and later I asked him what he thought about my offering, he repleid that he didn't really hear it and that he would have to read it again. Who can understand the behavior of devotee. Very mysterious, but always in accord with the will of the Lord. As far as Radhanatha Maharaja I saw him this morning and he embraced me and spoke a few words but didn't say anything about my offering. I am grateful for this special mercy. Anyhow here is the offering.

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

Fallen in the deep dark well of material life
No hope of deliverance from this ignorant strife

With the torch of knowledge you have opened my eyes
Destroying my ignorance and crushing my pride

At every step you guide my way
Making sure that I never stray.

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

A perfect instrument of Shri Radhika’s divine love,
You bring us her mercy from high above.

Without your mercy we all lost,
In the ocean of nescience we are constantly tossed

Drowning without any hope in sight
But then you appear, a great beacon of light

A lighthouse to guide our ship to safe ground
No one more merciful in all the three worlds to be found

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

Your mercy is vast like a fathomless ocean
You are the embodiment of pure loving devotion

Teaching us to serve Shri Shri Radhesyam
Granting us residence in Shri Vrindaban Dham

Eternally situated at Shri Radhika’s lotus feet
Bestowing Her service, the sweetest of the sweet

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

You life is given only for Shri Radhika’s pleasure,
And to your surrendered servants you bestow this great treasure

Service to Her to her feet, the ultimate goal
The ultimate perfection for the spirit soul

Service to Her feet the highest perfection
Sweeter than any earthly confection

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

You’ve taught us the secret to attain pure devotion
it’s Mahaprabhu’s teaching, what a powerful potion

Humility like grass, tolerance like a tree
You offer respects to all, even a fool like me,

For yourself you never expect any respect in return
This most important lesson when will I finally learn

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

Like a dwarf trying to touch the moon
I have now qualification to ask for this great boon

To serve you is without a doubt the highest aspiration
What right do I have to even ask? I have no qualification

But I fall at your feet and humbly implore
Please grant me your service, I can tolerate separation no more

My only desire is to serve you birth after birth
In the spiritual world or here on earth
My only desire is to serve you birth after birth

Gauranga Kishore Das the most insignificant beggar
Eagerly awaits the day when you will grant him this treasure

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : My Vyasa Puja Offering

This was the offering that I read to Guru Mahraja in Chicago at an informal gathering there.

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my most respectful obeisance. All glories unto you. O most beloved of Srimati Radharani, All glories unto you.

"Gentlemen, on behalf of the members of the Bombay branch of the Gaudiya Math, let me welcome you all because you have so kindly joined us tonight in our congregational offerings of homage to the lotus feet of the world teacher, acaryadeva. . ."

An acarya is one who teaches by example. Who can dare deny that your example is perfect? You have set the perfect example at every stage of life.

As a young college student, you displayed your lila of a condition soul searching for the absolute truth and left everything of this material world as completely insignificant. You were a perfect student searching after the absolute. Relentlessly you studied every form of religion and spirituality traveling on foot throughout the world searching for the absolute truth, never willing to settle for anything less than the highest expression of the absolute. Who can pray as you did? Sitting in Christian Churches and Islamic Mosque for days on end, fervently praying to God to reveal Himself and the path by which He could be known. Eventually He led to Vrindavan, and to the lotus feet of your eternal masters, Srimati Radharani and Srila Prabhupada. But this was all your lila as the perfect teacher. Even before you left America on your epic quest to find God, you received one of Srila Prabhupada's books with a picture of Srila Prabhupada in New Vrindaban, this was a sign that everything was already arranged, you would meet Srila Prabhupada and serve him in New Vrindaban. And the Supreme Lord Himself, Lord Ramachandra declared in a dream to His dear devotee that you were a devotee of Krishna and that you were to live in Vrindaban.

Then serving in New Vrindaban you set the perfect example as a humble brahmacari. As a brahmacari you served under the most austere conditions imaginable, you performed such intense austerities serving their Lorships Shri Shri Radha Vrindabanath day and night. Without ever complaining you tolerated physical austerities that are practically impossible to imagine, as well as all of the difficult political situations in the New Vrindaban leadership.

Then after receiving the order from your authorities, whom Srila Prabhupada instructed you to serve, you set out to preach the message of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the colleges of America. And within a few years you had started the most successful program of college preaching ever. Despite such success, you accepted the order of your authority to stay in India as the will of the Lord.

Through all these situations when people misunderstood your intentions and second guessed your judgment you patiently accepted all this as the will of the Lord. Who can now question your dedication and loyalty to Srila Prabhupada? Who can question your purity? Who can question that your were not acting according to the will of the Lord?

As a sanyasi and traveling preaching your example of selfless service and devotion is unsurpassed. Unendingly giving of yourself to all whom you meet, even to the point where your body is now falling apart. Just as all the great souls have done, you have sacrificed your life for us. What a perfect example you have set. Is there any room for miss-understanding what is pure devotional service?

As a guru your example of humility is perfect. How would we have ever known the meaning of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's most important instruction if you had not personally appeared to embody perfect humility like that of a blade of grass, perfect tolerance like that of a tree, and perfectly offering all respects to others without expecting any in return?

How would we have known how to properly serve the vaishnavas if you were yourself were not the perfect embodiment of vaishnava etiquette? Your example of properly honoring and respecting the vaishnavas is awe inspiring. Your wonderful mood of compassion and love for all condition souls has illuminated for us how we can share Krishna consciousness with other, free from false pride and pretense. Your example of loving relationships with your God brothers and God sisters has inspired us to try and develop more loving relationships with our God brothers and God sisters. And your respect for senior vaishnavas has forever left an indelible mark on our consciousness.

In regards to your service to your spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, no words can adequately describe this.

At every step due to my conditioned nature I am always prone to coming under the influence of the material energy, but your words and your example are my constant guiding light, to light the path of pure devotion. You are like a powerful lighthouse on the far shore of this ocean of samsara safely guiding us in this perilous ocean of material existence.

With thoughts of your physical departure weighing heavily on consciousness I am forced to contemplate my utter insignificance and total dependence on your mercy.

But I forget so easily. Delusions of grandeur take hold, and instantaneously I am completely covered over by the external energy of the Lord. No longer considering myself your servant I think of myself as great, independent, the enjoyer, the controller, the proprietor. No longer under the supremely sweet shelter of Srimati Radhika, I am now being tormented by the trident of the three fold miseries of material existence being so expertly wielded by Durga Devi. How did it happen, that solid ground has disappeared and I am now drowning in the ocean of material existence. How could I forget that everything is your mercy?

Without your mercy as my constant shelter I am just another lost soul in this vast ocean of nescience. On this most auspicious day I pray to you that you may grant me the constant remembrance of my utter insignificance and total dependence on your mercy.

Your Aspiring Servant,

Gauranga Kishore Das

Candidasa dasa : Re-reading Prabhupada’s books

Caitanya Caritamrita

I finished re-reading the Caitanya Caritamrita over Christmas. That makes it the second time I’ve read the Srimad-Bhagavatam and Caitanya Caritamrita all the way through. Nevertheless, I feel like I know nothing. There is so much knowledge in those books that even a lifetime of study will just scratch the surface. And even if, by some miracle, I were able to absorb all the knowledge, there is still many, many lifetimes of realization locked up in the Vedic literature. And even if I fully understand all the points, it will take a long time to actually apply them in my life.

Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to keep reading. I’ll get there eventually. Good thing that the books get better and better every time I read them. It even says so: Krishna consciousness is joyfully performed (and scientific) (BG 9.2 and 10.9). So what if it takes a long time? I certainly don’t have anything better to do.

So then, time to once again dive into the wonderful, fascinating, thrilling, treasure-trove of transcendental knowledge: the 1st Canto of the Bhagavatam.

Book Distribution News : hari sauri

THE MOST ECSTATIC SKP NEWSLETTER OF ALL TIME!

By Hari-sauri dasa

Here’s nice story from 1975 Thanksgiving Day in America. Ramesvara had sent a report about book distribution in America (this is a little long but its well worth the read): December 9, 1975 — Vrindavana

“Ramesvara concluded enthusiastically, “Our only desire is to surrender our lives to help publish and distribute millions of Your Divine Grace’s wonderful books. Here in LA they are selling over 200,000 BTGs this month of December, more than even the entire Radha-Damodara party combined. Of course Radha-Damodara is selling more big books than anyone else. Devotees are more enlivened in the USA than I have ever seen for distributing your books. This will be the biggest month ever. Already one million BTGs is not enough for this month.”

“Nothing pleases Srila Prabhupada more than hearing how his books are being printed and sold. He wrote back, “You keep your enlivened position. I was just talking to Hansaduta about the good fortune of America that Krishna consciousness is there; and if you can cover the whole America with Krishna consciousness that will be good for the whole world.”

“Then Hamsaduta prabhu read out an ecstatic report by Uttamasloka dasa, the president of the Chicago temple, although it was not directly addressed to Srila Prabhupada. It described the efforts of the devotees in the recent record-breaking, Thanksgiving-day book-distribution competition. Out of 5,000 books sold by the three temples, Chicago, assisted by nine Radha-Damodara traveling sankitrana party brahmacaries, sold over 2,000. The letter was written to Ramesvara prabhu and sent on. Hamsaduta read it out loud as Prabhupada listened, eyes sometimes wide with amazement and appreciation at the incredible effort and risk his disciples are taking to distribute his books throughout this world of darkness:

“We took the challenge seriously—not that we were puffed up and over confident of victory—for we knew that anything could happen by Lord Caitanya’s mercy. Then the first crew left—16 men and women—they were distributing by about 6:30 a.m. Later a small party went out by about 10:00 a.m. with more books and prasadam, and later on in the day several others came out. Altogether there were about 25 devotees at the airport throughout the day. Sripati and I sort of floated about helping in different ways, like you did. There were the 17 regular distributors plus Tripurari Swami and a couple of weekend regulars and a few more new comers.

“In the first hour and half most of the distributors had done 15 to 25 books, so by the time we got out (about 11:00 a.m.) they had already done about 300-400 books! The mornings are always good. Things were quiet; not too many announcements and no break ups or hassles. We all met together for lunch at 1:00 p.m. and took a preliminary count: over 750 books—we were close to breaking the world’s record half way through the day. By 1:00 p.m. Manusuta dasa had already done 100!!!!!! Praghosa dasa 80!!!! and Tripurari Swami 70!!!!! Our hairs began to stand on end a little as we speculated about the potential results and everyone was back distributing by 1:30 p.m. “Basically we distribute two terminalsi there is a corridor about 25ft. wide that the people funnel through after coming from the ‘fingers’i All of the passengers come through there on their way to the baggage claim and also on their way to a flighti. We found out from the paper next morning that over 220,000 people came through the airport that day!!!!

“At about 4:00 p.mi. a demon worker of the airlines came up to one devotee and punched him in the face; the men were stunned. Then he went up to another devotee and punched him in the face! The men and karmis began to congregate. Tripurari Swami came running to see what was happening; the demon punched him in the face!!! All of the devotees immediately jumped on the demon and began beating the stool out of him!!!!!!! There was a huge crowd all around and the devotees were shouting for the police to stop this man. There was blood on his face and on the ground. Praghosa’s punch had drawn blood and there were drops of blood on Praghosa’s clothes and drops of perspiration on his face: he was feeling very blissful!!”

“Prabhupada’s eyes opened wide at the description of the fight. “Accha!” he said in surprise, shaking his head in wonder at the risks his men were taking on his and Krishna’s behalf. Hamsaduta was laughing and shaking his head in awe and he read on. “Half the crowd was in our favor and the other half against. The police came in and the demon said that we had given him a book and then taken it back and started a fight. The police arrested the devotees! This is typical of all the incidents—they attack us and we get arrested! Anyway somehow or another, by Krishna’s grace, the devotees were released and back distributing in 20 minutes.

“Around 6:00 p.m. I took a preliminary counti I sat in the phone booth and added the score. As I added my eyebrows began to raise higher and higher! My eyes began to bulge from their sockets!! My mouth dropped open! I was speechless! Tears actually began to flow from my eyes! We had broken 1400 books! I couldn’t believe it; I was stunned and took another count to be sure, and sure enough, it was right. I began to shout in ecstasy ‘Hari Bol, Hari Bol, Hari Bol!’ All the karmis were looking at me through the phone booth with screwed up faces of bewildermenti .

“When I got back there had been another incidenti A couple of plainclothers (cops) had tried to set up one of the women for an arrest and she tried to get one of the men to help her. One of the men tried to intervene and they arrested him and took him downstairs. Another mother went down to find the girl whom they tried to arrest and when the cops saw her they said “Where’s the other girl?” “I don’t know” she said. “OK, then we’ll arrest you instead!” “Hey, let me go! I didn’t do anything!” Two small scuffles broke out with the two devotees and the police. Another devotee came in to stop iti and the police turned on him and the three of them mercilessly beat him up on the floor in front of many bystanders! One of the policemen’s guns fell out during the scuffle and books were scattered every where. The devotees were then taken to jail downtown (the two men devotees). Of course this knocked at least 100 books off our score.”

Prabhupada was listening with rapt attention to the whole description, occasionally raising his eyebrows in surprise and shaking his head and smiling in appreciation. He was aglow with obvious pride at the determination of his disciples to sell his books despite all obstacles, and he listened to the entire report, blow by blow.

“While we listened to this incident and took prasadam, a demon who had found three books ripped them up and threw them in our midst. Unaffected, a little tired, but undaunted in their determination, the devotees went back to distribute. Meanwhile a huge blizzard began and traffic started jamming both on the roads and in the air.. At 10:30 p.m. I got a report from Sripati: over 1700 books—we might break 2,000!!!! This is incredible!! Who can imagine the mercy of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu? All but four of the men were coming back at 11:30 p.m.—Manusuta w/191; Praghosa w/153; Tripurari Swami w/135 and Ranganatha w/120i. The first crew returned in the blizzard by 2:00 a.m. and the four others left about 1:30 or 2:00 a.m. Everyone struggled to get up for mangala arati (the four latecomers didn’t even go to sleep) and after an ecstatic kirtana I ran around to get the final scoresi On Thursday we fasted from breakfast and chanted and slept till noon arati when we had a big arati kirtana and after a nice feast!!!!

“Thank you for inspiring us to compete for the mercy of the Spiritual Master. If it weren’t for you we wouldn’t know what to do. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Your servant, Uttamasloka dasa.”

“Another page carried the totals for each distributor. Two men did over 400 between them: Manusuta set a new individual world’s record with 210 books, Praghosa was just behind with 200. Another seven, Tripurari Swami, Ranganatha, Romapada, Buddhimanta, and Preraka prabhus, including two women, Sadbhuja and Jagaddhatri dasis, broke the one-hundred—book mark. The grand total was 2,042 hardbound books.

“At the bottom of the list Uttamasloka added a note to Ramesvara: “My humble suggestion and request is that you read this letter and all of its contents to the assembled devotees of New Dvaraka Dhama. Even though it is irregularly composed and full of mistakes and errors, it is still very transcendentally pleasing and will be relished by all.”

“At the top of the letter Ramesvara had written in large clear capital letters, “THE MOST ECSTATIC SKP NEWSLETTER OF ALL TIME! SHOULD BE READ ALOUD TO ALL OF THE ASSEMBLED DEVOTEES!”

“When Hamsaduta finished, Srila Prabhupada had a huge smile on his face, clearly pleased and obviously enjoying transcendental ecstasy. He dictated his reply, not to Ramesvara but to Uttamasloka. “Please accept my blessings. I read your sankirtana newsletter with great relish. Europe and America are in great danger, this Hare Krishna movement is enveloping them. The sankirtana devotees are very, very dear to Krishna. Because they are doing the field work of book distribution, Krishna has immediately recognized them as true servants. Just like during the war time, a farm boy or ordinary clerk who goes out to fight for his country on the front, immediately becomes a national hero for his sincere effort. So Krishna immediately recognizes a preacher of Krishna consciousness who takes all risks to deliver his message.

“It is called dhira bratta—determination. These boys and girls are mahatmas-mahatmanas tu mam partha, daivim prakrtim asritah, bhajanty ananya manaso, jnatva bhutadim avyayam:—’O son of Prtha, those who are not deluded, the great souls, are under the protection of the divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible.’ This verse is applicable here. If these boys were under the material nature they would not take so much risk. They are mahatma, they are real mahatma, not that long beard and saffron cloth mahatma. They are unswerving in their determination, dhira bratta. All glories to the American devotees! “I hope this letter finds you and all the sankirtana devotees well, Your ever well-wisher, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami.”

Your humble servant, Hari-sauri dasa

ISKCON Melbourne : Ratha-yatra in Melbourne

It was a hot day in Melbourne for the Ratha-yatra of Lord Jagannatha. Lord Jagannatha looked very happy. The devotees were very enthusiastic. The feast was really tasty. A knock out after the 90 minute kirtana down town..

We were well received by almost everyone. I saw a couple of fellows who were uncharacteristically agitated by the sound and sight of the procession but they didn't stay long. One fellow came over and made a point of treading on Danda and Glenn's toes getting in their face and giving them the finger. Quite unpleasant and rude behaviour. They just laughed it off in a good humoured way. I was impressed.

Everyone else was pulling out their mobile phones and digital cameras and taking shots of the devotees, helping themselves to the prasadam and enjoying the atmosphere. Did anyone get any good shots? I led the kirtana all the way and haven't got a single picture. Please send them to me or drop them off on a CD or memory stick so I can create a gallery.

In its statement Friday, the government commission set up to look into the dispute said the demolitions were legal and recommended the Hare Krishna community seek to acquire land by lawful means.

It said that Krishnas had broken property-registration laws and disturbed neighbors while carrying out their religious rituals.

ISKCON Melbourne : Fruit of Vrndavana - Diary of a Traveling Preacher - Vol 7 Ch 19

Indradyumna Swami in Vrndavana for Kartika...

Soon after our Govardhana parikrama, we visited Uchagaon, the appearance place of Lalita devi, Srimati Radharani's closest sakhi. For days I had prepared myself by reading about Lalita devi - her personal qualities, her special mood, and her service in Radha and Krishna's pastimes. As hundreds of us walked along the dusty road leading to the hill where Lalita's village was, I was thinking about my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada. Only by his grace could I even set foot in such a holy place.

As we were crossing a bridge over a small river, I noticed two of our devotees speaking to a farmer on the other side. The farmer was an older man, typical of many Vrajavasis - dressed in a simple white dhoti, old shoes, a vest, and an old chaddar. I thought it odd that the devotees were speaking with him for so long.

"They certainly don't speak the local Vrajavasi dialect," I thought, "and surely a poor farmer like him doesn't speak English."

When I reached the group, I was surprised to hear the farmer speaking English fluently. I listened for a moment and then spoke to him. "Sir," I said, "how is it that you speak such good English?"

Madhava Ghosh dasa : There Is No Chair

An eccentric philosophy professor gave a one question final exam after a semester dealing with a broad array of topics. The class was already seated and ready to go when the professor picked up his chair, plopped it on top of his desk and wrote on the board:

“Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does not exist.”

Fingers flew, erasers erased, notebooks were filled in furious fashion. Some students wrote over 30 pages in one hour attempting to refute the existence of the chair. One member of the class however, was up and finished in less than a minute.

A week later when the grades were posted, the rest of the group wondered how he could have gotten an “A” when he had barely written anything at all.

His answer consisted of two words: “What chair?”

Ride Within : Arcata-Humbolt County

Arcata-Humbolt County
August 13th

Is marijuana kind of like garlic or onions? Can we be a little lenient when on the road? Somehow we held strong despite all our previous samskaras and didn't touch a gram.

Today we finally traded in our "Penot Not War" wine bottle for some bicycle maintenance. It did come in handy. Within a few minutes of arriving we met up with all our german friends and performed kirtan. We even got our Pastor friend to chant. He liked it very much. AS we chanted many poeple came up and appreciated the kirtan and invited us to stay for a few days and do kirtan at their homes. Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule trying to make it somewhere for Janmastami. We made friends with the boys at the bike shop and they invited us to stay in the back yard on the half pipe. We took up their offer and upon entering we met three drunken english men also riding down the coast. They invited us to go out to the bars and enjoy Arcatas night life. We declined and also looked for a better place to stay. We went out to eat at a restaurant called Tranquility. Its all vegan and organic. We were so happy. Here we had dinner with our new friend Josh. He was telling us all about his easy going life. Basically he surfs every day and drives his car for free because its a biodeisal. Every few months he helps harvest marijuana from the local plantations and makes hash to sell. In this a his life is easy and he can enjoy without much disturbance. After dinner we walked around town for some time and checked out the "plazoids"-thats a name for the homeless kids and all the musicians who hang out on the downtown plaza begging for change to get drunk. At one time as I was leaving the bike shop with my bead bag in my hand and excited about all the positive reciprocation in regards to being Hare Krishnas in Arcata i saw someone very peculiar... He was dressed in a purple tshirt and a purple lungee. In one hand he had a purple bead bag and in the other he held Prabhupada's Gita. He was standing in the middle of the street literally cussing in an angry mood at all the people driving by. I quite confused and grabbed the other boys to see. we didn't know what to do? Should we beat him up? should we grab him and take the Gita and beads from him? what should we do? He was obviously setting a horrible example for devotees and he was clearly crazy? We ended up letting him go but for the rest of our stay in Arcata people were asking, " is that one guy with you?" Blake went to the local health food store and a young lady asked if he had a bicycle patch kit. He did and fixed her tire. She invited us to stay at her home. we washed our clothes, I stole some music from her computer and fell asleep after half an hour of kirtan. The next day sheet boy made it to town and bought us the supplies for pancakes and our new friend made breakfast. As we left I got my one and only flat of the trip. I completely forgot her name...but she did remind me of my godbrother Radharamanji? Oh RadhaRamanji where are you?We miss you!!!

When, three years ago [in Vrindavana] Sucirani left this world, we at Gopinatha dham, were stricken with sadness and doubts about our future.

Suci was an essential part of our project here [as well as our lives] in so many ways.

At first it was quite a struggle to maintain our faith that Gopinatha had taken care of her and He would also take care of us!!

Yesterday was the day for us to remember her.

Ride Within : Orick

Crecent city to Orick.

We made it to California!!! Today we rode through amazing redwood forests and we landed in Chaitanya's most hated place on the whole trip. Orick! This was only after riding over some of the biggest hills todate. We were dying and Chaitanya's spokes kept breaking. We arrived and the only place to eat was some horrible diner or the grocery store. Some how we mustered up enough vegetarian items to make sandwiches. We hung out in front of the grocery store trying to figure out where to stay this evening. Speaking to a few drug addicts we decided to find our own spot. We met one boy who was riding a beach cruiser up the coast and carried a djimbe drum on the front of it. He somehow knew we were Hare Krsna's and started to tell us about his being in a "moon cycle" and was forced to travel by providence. Maybe we were also in our "moon cycle". We debated whether to sleep under the bridge or next to the river? Maybe behind the garbage can or rent a hotel? Then we found the most "perfect" spot... the roof of the volunteer fire department! We climbed up and wrapped ourselves in the sleeping bags thinking it would be a simple nights rest. Within an hour or so of falling asleep we woke up completely drenched with water. We had no idea that such heavy fog would roll in. It was if it was a Mumbai monsoon. We woke up the next morning and I met wo biker that were just vacating their hotel room. I became friends with them and asked them if we could use their bathroom to take a hot shower. They agreed and our morning started out well. There is nothing wonderful about Orick. Actually there is, that sign in the picture gets changed everyday but no one ever see's who does it!
