Kurma dasa : The Sanctuary of Poseidon

Today was my last day in Greece. I took a picturesque bus ride and headed south-east to a place called Sounion, on the tip of the Attiki Peninsula.

The Temple of Poseidon:

The ancient sanctuary of Sounion is first mentioned in the Odyssey, as the place where Menelaos stopped during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman, Phrontes Onetorides.

At the beginning of the 5th century B.C., the Athenians initiated the construction of an imposing temple for Poseidon, the Presiding Deity of the Water, Otherwise known as Neptune to the Romans, and Varuna in Vedic Cosmography.

mug shot:

With all the frantic to-ing and fro-ing of history, the building was never completed, as both the temple and the offerings were destroyed by the Persians in 480 B.C. In the following decades, Sounion, like the rest of Attica, flourished, and an important building project was undertaken at both sanctuaries.

At the end of the 5th century and during the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians fortified Sounion cape. But, alas - as is the nature of all things of rock and stone - from the 1st century B.C. onwards the sanctuaries gradually declined.

Doric columns:

These are the remains of the Temple of Poseidon. It is situated on top of a massive cliff face that gives breathtaking 360 degree views of the Aegean Sea and many Greek islands. The Doric columns are made of Agrileza marble.

a view from sounion:

In ancient times the temple was the last sign of civilization the Athenians saw as they sailed away from home.

adio:

And it's the last glimpse of Greek history I'll be seeing before I fly back to Australia. Kalinihta, and adio Ellada!

Kurma dasa : A Day at Mount Elikon

It was my desire to see a bit of rural Greece before heading back to Australia. I finally got that opportunity. Yesterday I took a train North to the city of Livadia near Mount Parnassosis.

The mists were still hanging low over the hills as we entered the region.

Elikon:

The area is rich in archaeological places, such as Heronia, Orhomenos, Thiva (pronounced almost like Shiva) and Delphi, one of the most important of the five oracles of Ancient times, and home of Hellenistic Astrology.

livadia:

Livadia is situated right in the centre of Greece. It's a pretty place, with lovely icy cold streams that rush down from the mountain and are channelled into waterfalls and waterwheels that meander through the town.

streams:

A specialty of the region is a variety of tiropitakia (cheese pie) that resembles baklava.

local tiropitakia:

Instead of nuts and sugar in between the layers of filo, there is feta cheese and butter. Very interesting. I'll have to try making some. Watch out for it in a future cookbook.

by Kurma at January 21, 2007 06:06 PM

Kurma dasa : Tiropitakia

Tiropitakia, little cheese pies, come in many shapes and sizes here in Greece. Little diamonds, squares, cigar-shaped, folded triangles, large family-sized trays, spiral rolls - you name it.

I espied these more familiar triangle-shaped tiropitakia in my wanderings near the Acropolis.

tiropitakia:

Here's my recipe, from 'Quick Vegetarian Dishes'.

Cheesy Filo Parcels

Feta cheese is a white, dry crumbly cheese that can be made either from cows’, ewes’ or goats’ milk. It is matured in brine to give it a sharp acidic and salty taste. These small triangles of crisp filo pastry with a savoury soft centre contain a mix of feta and haloumi cheese. They’re ideal for dinner parties as a pre-meal nibbler. Makes 16.

125g (4½ ounces) feta cheese 125g (4½ ounces) haloumi cheese 1-2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme, or mint ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon caraway seeds, dry-roasted and coarsely ground 12 sheets filo pastry ¼ cup olive oil or melted butter

Preheat the oven to 200° C / 400° F.

Grate the feta and haloumi cheese into a bowl and mix in the thyme or mint, the pepper and the roasted caraway seeds.

Cut the stack of filo sheets lengthwise into 3 even strips with a sharp knife. This will give you 36 strips of pastry.

Brush one strip with smears of butter or oil and place a second strip on top. At the base of this, spoon on a small tablespoon of the cheese mixture.

Fold the bottom edge of the pastry up to form a triangle over the filling. Continue to flip the triangle over and over, working up the pastry strip until it is all used up, forming a little triangular parcel. Repeat this procedure until all the pastry and cheese is used. Place the parcels on a baking sheet and brush with the remaining butter or oil.

Bake in the hot oven for about 15 minutes, or until the parcels are crisp and golden.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

ISKCON Melbourne : Iskcon temple blast case cracked - The Telegraph

An interesting development in Manipur...
Police claim to have unmasked those who hurled a grenade at Iskcon temple that turned Janmashtami festivities into a bloodbath last year.

Announcing this today, director-general of Manipur police A.K. Parashar told the media that police had identified the assailants. While he declined to divulge names of any group or individual behind the attacks on devotees, the police chief ruled out the hand of any Muslim fundamentalist group behind the killings.

"We know their identities. We will pick them up and punish them. It's only a question of time before we take those responsible behind the blast into custody. Then everything will be as clear as daylight."

Book Distribution News : Be a part of this divine mission

Our life is centered around Srila Prabhupada's books. By reading them, by distributing them, by preaching from them, by living by them, we can attract the most intimate attention of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu and our lives are perfect. So it is very pleasing to see how devotees have made great endeavours in this book distribution program that is going on. It is pleasing because we know it is what Prabhupada wants, and we see how, when we make Prabhupada's desire our desire, we become blissful. We become empowered and the most congenial form of spiritual intimacy is created amongst ourselves. So all of us, whoever we may be, wherever we may be, we can all be a part of this divine mission. This Krishna consciousness movement is designed so that we are all extending ourselves for the sake of preaching, for the sake of helping others to become better devotees and if we just work together in this way, so many wonderful things will be manifested through our endeavors. This is Krishna's promise and this is the perfection of our lives.

Thank you very much. Hare Krishna.

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : The past fews days have been quite amazing, Thursd...

The past fews days have been quite amazing, Thursday night was the first part of the 13th annual drama festival, every year the congregation spends a lot of time and energy to prepare wonderful dramas for the pleasure of Hari, guru, and the vaishnavas. For many devotee this is one of the most awaited events of the year. The first drama on Thursday night was about the Pandava’s last year of exile incognito. The second drama was the very inspiring and heart rending story of Bilvamangala Thakur. Then on Friday my mother along with Sukhavaha Dasi, Gauravani and his family, and Chaitanya Nitai and his family arrived. It is soa wonderful to again be in the association of all the vaishnavas, and especially Gauravani Prabhu, from the time I heard he was coming I have looking forward to his wonderful kirtans. In the evening there was a beautiful drama about the life story of Srila Visvanath Chakravarti Thakur and how despite many obstacles, invading muslims attacking Vrindaban, caste goswamis, sahajiyas, etc he firmly re-established the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and the drama ended with Srila Prabhupada boarding the ship Jaladuta, everyone was deeply moved and inspired.

This weekend has been quite incredible. Saturday started off with another incredible class by Radhanath Maharaj. How does he do it every time? During the class we were all plucking flower petals in preparation for the evenings festivities. We celebrated Pusya Abhiseka by bathing the deities in over one ton (2000 lbs.) of flower petal, and then the maha petals were showered on all the devotees. IT was truly a transcendental experience, one could not but help be transported to the spiritual world, this festival is truly a glimpse in the ecstatic pastimes of Shri Shri Radha Gopinath. I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to witness such an incredible event. It was just so magical to see Radha Gopinath surrounded by Lalita, Visakha, and all the other sakhis being continuously showered by the most fragrant and colorful flower petals. Such things we only read about in the writings of the goswamis. After all the petals we showered on Their Lordships, the petals were then showered on all the vaishnavas, I felt like I was swimming in an ocean of flower petals. And the best part was getting to continuously shower petals on Maharaj, when else do you get such a wonderful opportunity. Everyone was lovingly throwing petals at him, and at each other, and Maharaj was throwing petals at everyone around him. He had to otherwise he would’ve been buried in petals. It was an incredible expression of transcendental joy. I think we may have to update the Nectar of Instruction to include two more loving exchanges, throwing flower petal bombs and receiving flower petal bombs thrown. There were many loving exchanges, some were more in sakhya rasa tinged with chivalry, as flower petal bombs were hurled with great force into the faces of other vaishnavas, but it was all completely ecstatic. I couldn’t believe that some devotees were even flower bombing Maharaj, I was just throwing them at his feet and in the air above him so that they would light shower him from above, and then at the end after ecstatic kirtan by Gauravani Prabhu, Govinda Prabhu began to chant the prasadam prayers, and Maharaj stopped throwing petal and just closed his eyes and folded his hands to chant the prayer, but everyone else kept showering him with petals, and by the time the prasadam prayer was over Maharaj was neck deep in flower petals. That was a beautiful sight. Such are some of the pastimes of Radha Gopinath, but what can I describe with my insignificant words.

Shri Shri Radha Gopinath Ki Jaya!
Shri Shri Radha Gopinath Ki Jaya!
Shri Shri Radha Gopinath Ki Jaya!

Sunday was another amazing day, unfortuntely due to ever increasing illness I missed the morning program, but even the sleep is transcendental, it is said that in the dham even for sleeping you get spiritual credit of offering dandavat obeisances, anyhow I heard that Gauravani led a wonderful mangal arati, govinda prabhu led an ecstatic guru puja kritan, and again Radhanath Maharaja enlightened with the transcendental sound vibrations emanating from his mouth, then we again gathered in the temple at mid-day for Gaura Arati, followed by Bhajans with Gauravani and accompanied by very beautifully played flute and violin, then again Mahraja inspired us with his wonderful katha.

There is a couple of days of quiet coming up, then off to Pune, Tirupatti, Puri, and Mayapur, should be ecstatic, let's see if the body can handle such ecstasy.

Hopefully tommorrow I'll post up some pictures of the interior of the temple and of Thier Lorships.

The Herald-Dispatch

NEW VRINDABAN, W.Va. - As a couple that spent part of their honeymoon aboard the Alexander Henry, a retired ice cutter in Kingston, Ontario, it’s safe to say the Lavender crew always has an eye out for someplace besides Motel 6 that will leave the light on for us.

Not that there’s anything wrong with Motel 6, as Seinfeld would have said.

When a recent road trip caught us panhandling (rolling through one of those crazy chicken finger-like land masses attached to West Virginia’s mid-section), we just couldn’t pass up a chance to stay all night on the grounds of Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold.

We heard about the Palace of Gold about five years ago when my wife, Toril, picked up a copy of Jeanne Mozier’s must-have “Way Out in West Virginia” travel book at the Cathedral Cafe in Fayetteville.

Tossed on our “to-see” list of places in West Virginia that includes America’s smallest chapel and largest teapot, the Palace of Gold is a true transcendental experience and the cheapest Indian vacation you’ll ever enjoy. It’s located about 12 windy miles south of I-70 near Wheeling…

H.H. Sivarama Swami : Censoring India

Stop “nannying” India, censorship critics say

By Jonathan Allen

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Bare breasts, cigarettes, a pole-dancing freedom fighter, Paris Hilton and sexy adverts are just some of things the Indian government has tried to hide from its citizens in the last few months.

Lawmakers say they are simply shielding people from corrupting influences.

But critics say Indian sensibilities are made of sterner stuff, and warn against the country becoming a “nanny state”.

“Dasmunsi must be told he can’t go about treating us like impressionable children,” the Indian Express editorial said on Friday, referring to the broadcasting minister who banned a channel for airing “The World’s Sexiest Advertisements”.

Priyaranjan Dasmunsi is scrutinising other channels for “adult content,” the Times of India reported on Friday, after banning AXN (owned by a unit of Sony) for two months earlier this week.

The ban has upset the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), a grouping of India’s major broadcasters including Sony.

“This has created a lot of uncertainty,” Naresh Chahal, IBF director, told Reuters. “Just one or two people are deciding on what are very subjective issues: what is vulgar? What is nudity? They are impossible to define.”

The IBF has asked to meet Dasmunsi next week.

Kunal Dasgupta, CEO of Sony Entertainment India, also complained that the censors seem to use their powers randomly.

“Who’s to say one show is raunchier than the other?” he told Reuters. “Things are kind of arbitrary and we’re still waiting for the limits to be defined.”

It is not the first time Indian censors have acted.

Last week, Dasmunsi ordered two local news channels to apologise for airing footage of a man dressed as revered Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi performing a pole dance, saying it was an “assault to the dignity of the Father of the Nation.”

In November, undercover Indian police in Mumbai were assigned to scan the catwalks at fashion shows in an effort to prevent a repeat of last year’s episode in which an Indian model’s top slipped to reveal her breasts.

India censors banned Paris Hilton’s music video “Stars Are Blind” from being shown on television in August, which shows the blond socialite cavorting on a beach in revealing clothes.

India last year also tried to ban smoking scenes in films, reasoning that cigarette-wielding Bollywood stars were influencing people to take up the habit.

Dasmunsi was not available for comment.

Anthropologist Dipankar Gupta said some of the bans were the result of inherent Indian prudishness.

“When we were little we were told not to talk about sex, and even as adults we don’t talk about it - we just ban things instead,” he told Reuters. “It’s the only way we have of dealing with any remotely sensitive issue.”

H.H. Sivarama Swami : VSM Pt 6

Vaisnava-siddhanta-mala, by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura
Sixth Chapter - The Spirit Souls are the Servants of Sri Krsna

QUESTION: What is the natural and eternal position (nitya-dharma) of the spirit soul?
ANSWER: The nitya-dharma of the spirit soul (jiva) is service to Sri Krsna (krsna-dasya).

QUESTION: What is the unnatural, fallen position (vaidharmya) of the spirit soul?
ANSWER: The downfall of the jiva occurs: 1) when a deluded soul accepts the doctrine of non-difference (abheda) and seeks impersonal nirvana; or 2) when a foolish soul seeks advancement in material pleasures.

QUESTION: Why do you call all these things unnatural?
ANSWER: They are unnatural because the spirit soul is made of eternal consciousness (cinmaya), and the eternal nature of that which is cinmaya is happiness (ananda) and love (priti). In the impersonalistic doctrine of nirvisesa there is no happiness; their ultimate goal is simply to negate the soul. In the philosophy of the materialistic doctrine of visesa, the spiritual identity of the soul is covered by material identity. Both the visesa and nirvisesa philosophies cause the downfall of the jiva.

QUESTION: What kind of people aspire for material happiness?
ANSWER: People who are bewildered by their karma (fruitive work) think themselves to be their bodies, which are the instruments of their work. The identification with the physical body then expands into identification with the pleasures and pains of the senses, which further expands into identification with the material objects of the body’s senses. These people work hard to possess sense objects that they think will bring pleasure to the body’s senses and alleviate pain. But neither the body, its senses or the sense objects have a real relationship with the soul, because they are temporary whereas the soul is eternal. Therefore there is no possibility of attaining genuine happiness for the soul by struggling with the body, its senses and its sense objects. The only result of this struggle is the entanglement of the soul in more and more bodies, senses and sense objects in future births in the cycle of samsara (repeated birth and death).

QUESTION: What about the practitioners of the physical yoga system?
ANSWER: They renounce the happiness of the senses so that they may obtain power (vibhuti) by sense and mind control. But this is simply a more refined form of bewilderment by karma. The fruit they want from their work of discipline in yoga is the fruit of mystical power.

QUESTION: But if material happiness, impersonal nirvana and mystical power are rejected, what remains for the soul to attain?
ANSWER: Rejecting all these, the soul will then rest in its own natural enjoyment. The methods of sense gratification, impersonal meditation and mystic yoga are called upadhika (artificial impositions on the soul). The realization of the soul’s own inner eternal bliss is nirupadhika (not artificial, or perfectly natural).

QUESTION: What is the realization of the soul’s own true happiness?
ANSWER: When the spirit soul gives up the illusory relationship with matter and cultivates its eternal relationship with Krsna, a boundless joy that is characteristic of its own pure consciousness arises in its being. That is the natural happiness of the jiva.

H.H. Kavicandra Swami : Catching up.

In case you have not guessed, the pictures on the last entry were of SRISRI RADHA LONDONISVARA and JAGANATH SUBHADRA and BALARAM at SOHO St. Temple London. The Jaganatha Deities are from the first sets carved by Syamasundara Prabhu. Radha London Isvara were often said to be Srila Prabhupada’s favorites. They were aquired and installed by Srila Prabhupada himself. That is great pastime that I recomend that you read from the Lilamrta.

After one night and one day in London, I flew to Damodara Desh. I just had time to go to the apartment to chant my rounds and have a bath. From there I flew to Kuala Lumpur. We had an interesting drive back to the temple. Both rear tires were punctured at that same time. Everything was closed so we drove very slowly for some time.. Finally we stopped. I was thinking that Krsna must have something arranged since it not common to have two punctures. As I was chanting japa the brahmacaries came to say that one man would drive us home.. He had stopped for gas and was happy to serve devotees. He knew well the location of the temple since his son attends the kindergarten that is nearby. He had never visited but he took this as a sign that he should and invited the devotees to visit his tea stall.

From there it was a short flight to Bangkok. I was surprised that many devotees were at the airport to greet me.. They were standing in the crowd of greeter who held signs from hotels with the names of their guests. They had a big HARE KRSNA mahamantra sign, so I was happy.. We got to the preaching center just in time for a wonderful SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM class by H G Gopiparanadhana Prabhu. By the grace of the Indian immigration he is staying for six weeks in Bangkok and blessing the devotees with his SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM discourses. He is also studying Thai language, and learning it quickly. He has three of his young sanskrit students with him and they are doing harinam and book distribution daily. One night we had a blissful 2.5 hour harinam, and the devotees, including one new Thai devotee, Bhaktin BOON. When she tells people that if they chant the maha mantra they will be happy, no one argues, but they ask for books. I had to leave on Friday so I missed the scheduled program at on AIT university. Devotees in Bangkok are getting very enthusiastic for preaching, especially for book distribution.
Sneha devi, from Nepal, is leading the book distributors. She met one Vetrinarian who has become very devoted. He is fortanate taht Gopiparanadhana Prabhu is visiting him daily and answering all of his questions. He is giving books to many of his family members. One read on small book and came back asking for all books from “that society”.
Now I am in Tokyo. I still pray that some young book distributors will come here. I went out and found that there are many people who will take books, and some are actually interested. We need help. Tulasi devi is growing very opulently in spite or the bad weather, so I take that as a good sign. Another devotee baby just arrived, so at least in that way new devotees are coming..
My camera batteries are flat so I don’t have any new photos. I will get the link for photos from Thai New Year’s eve harinam. Many devotees traveled to a tourist beach town and chanted until late at night at the request of the locals. There are also photos from the “spiritual fair” which is held every year in early December. The organizer was so happy and joined the devotees for blissful dancing. He said that without the devotees it would not have been “spiritual”.

H.G. Jagattarini dd : Back at work

January20th, 2007

  Patita Pavana Jagannatha in Puri

There is time to waste when one does not have an ideal:what to speak of a spiritual objective in life!!! So many people use money and time only in pursuit of worldly pleasure. For a transcendentalist this is not different than suicide.

My return here to Gopinatha dham, after three months in India, meant returning to a still far from finished project. Two large rooms are awaiting our hard work to complete. Sri Radha Raman, who remained here, working in my absence, showed me what had been done.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : “Hell” by Donald Justice

R. B. VAUGHN speaks:

“After so many years of pursuing the ideal
I came home. But I had caught sight of it.
You see it sometimes in the blue-silver wake
Of island schooners, bound for Anegada, say.
And it takes other forms. I saw it flickering once
In torches by the railroad tracks in Medellín.
When I was very young I thought that love would come
And seize and take me south and I would see the rose;
And that all ambiguities we knew would merge
Like orchids on a word. Say this:
I sought the immortal word.”
                                           So saying he went on
To join those who preceded him;
and there were those that followed.

Ride Within : Off to India!

On Thursday January 25th
Jason and Balaramacandra head to Mother India. A big trip full of travel and purification. The itinerary looks like this...

Ahmedabad, Dwarka, Palitani, New Dheli, Vrindaban, Bhubenesvar, Jagganath Puri, Mayapur, Kolkata, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Then back to Mayapur for festival, and then off to Mumbai for Gaura Purnima, then to Udipi, Goa, and the Eco village in Karnataka, then back to mumbai and off to the USA. -Hare Krishna.

Jason spent a good part of December month working at a mall in California to raise money for the trip. Its a great austerity being trapped in a mall for three weeks. Jason is a mountain man built for the rural environments with little to no interest in Jingle bells and the mall spirit. Desiring to make his first trip to India he went all out and worked hard to raise more than enough money. Now he can spend three months of prayer in the wonderful embrace of Mother India.

Balaramacandra is now taking up the often recited mantra of Sankirtan devotees, "every year one must go to India to get recharged." With a yearly schedule of full time college outreach, festival organizing, Guru seva, and being 26 and having all his material desires hit him in the face full force, some how or another Krsna is bringing him back to His holy lands for parikram, bathing in holy rivers and taking shelter of the holy name free of any other responsibility. This will be best for all who he has to deal with on a regular basis in the Usa. His temple authority, his guiding teachers, his students and those Vaisnavas in his association have given full sanction, permission and blessings to travel once again.

We seek all your blessing and prayers for good health and the best of consciousness while travelling abroad. Please pray that offenses stay far away.

we'll post photos and stories as we obtain the chance.

Ride Within : Side route: New Vrindaban College Outreach

Side route:
New Vrindaban College Outreach
This last Tuesday I had to say good bye to many students. Im leaving to India for the rest of the quarter and many of them will graduate while I am gone. They will leave Athens for good, get jobs and continue to grow into the wonderful people they are meant to become. I love them dearly, as i have known them for so long. I've see them each week and observed their personal evolution from their freshman year to now graduation. I've seen their ups and downs and they have seen my ups and downs. It was an emotional evening. My friends are leaving. I'm going to miss them, they have taught me so much!

In reciprocation, Krsna consciousness has effected so many of their lives in various ways. Some of our students have accepted Gaudiya Vaisnavism as their religion, some have taken up sadhana, some are living according to principles of purity, some just love to chant, some read Gita each day, some ask us for guidance in their life choices, and some hate us but can't figure out why they have to keep coming back each week.

Its been four years since we started college outreach from New Vrindaban. It started in 2003 under the guidance of Kuladri Prabhu. It was a lone brahmacari in New Vrindaban. Anada Vidya Prabhu our, beyond comparison book distributer, took me out to the colleges for book distribution the previous months and rekindled my desire to share Krsna Consciousness with the youth. He had left to India for his yearly trip so I was left all alone in New Vrindaban winter months to milk the cows, wash dishes, and mop the floors with my mind just thinking about those local colleges and sharing Krsna Consciousness. I meditated on old stories of my Gurmaharaja hitchhiking, driving beat up vans, chanting in the grass, giving lectures, distributing prasadam and opening centers. I heard how he used to travel to colleges each day of the week in a large circle through Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. I learned about all the details of his travels, how he preached, how he started programs, how he slept, how he studied, how he chanted, and how he cooked and served each and every student with love. This is what I wanted to do and meditated on throughout the day.

Kuladri Prabhu would meet me each day and talk about Krsna. I remember we would just sit back with our arms resting over our heads and talk about what we've been reading and he would always tell stories about my Gurumaharaja. He always made sure I wasn't feeling lonely and that I was satisfied in my service. One day i asked him if I could start to travel and preach in colleges. With all the love of a kind father he was hesitant and discussed all the glories and difficulties of such a service. Especially being alone. He was all for it but was desirous that I find a partner to go out with, as that was best for a young brahmacari. Unfortunately there was no one. We even posted ads looking for others but no one showed up. Within the last year all our brahmacaris with the exception of Anada vidya had graduated ashrams and moved on to school, work or married life. Soon He gave a consession, that I could go but I had to be based out of Columbus and be here in New Vrindaban on the weekends. Nice arrangements were made that i stay with Krishna Balarama Prabhu, and Krishna Das Prabhu as they were single men and had a house near the temple. Kuladri allowed me to use the second sankirtan van which roared like a tank, got 10 miles to the gallon and which I loved and called Bhumi devi.

I had no Idea what to do but was confident that the Lord and Kuladri Prabhu would guide me. I sat down one day with Karnamrita devi and we looked at a map of colleges and we circled all the sweetest ones which my Gurumaharaja used to visit. I filled the van with books, instruments, bhoga, a table and flyers. I got all my warmest clothes, signed up for a cell phone and hit the road.

I traveled almost 100 miles each day visiting colleges, distributing books, setting up book tables, meeting students and professors. In no time I was invited to give lectures in classes, visit students in their homes and was distributing hundreds of books. Going out each day was not easy. At this time I barely knew anyone. So i camped out in the van by myself, ate by myself, drove myself, chanted by myself, distributed books by myself, ran book table by myself, and dreamed of the future by myself. All in the blizzards of the mid west. It was too much. I missed the dieties and the devotees. I lasted a month. Even though it was the number two thing which I wanted to do in this life, I knew I wasn't strong enough to do it by myself. I felt lonely and was getting disturbed. I didn't want to quit but I had no other choice, It was too difficult or I just saw it as too dangerous for me. Everyone warned against it but Kuladri Prabhu just said to try it out and see what happens, you can always come back. I wasn't a paramahamsa but just a young boy trying to stay engaged and please Srila Prabhupada. I called up Kuladri Prabhu very distraught and almost crying. He immediately just said to come home as soon as possible.

When I returned to New Vrindaban, my old friend, Atmanada Prabhu had just came back from India. I told him what I was doing and he was filled with excitement. He immediately wanted to join the fun and serve in this way. We spoke with Kuladri Prabhu and he explained that it must be Krsna's arrangement and that the college outreach must be meant to go on.

So in a few days we hit the road again and started actual programs in various colleges. We had no idea what kind of programs to start doing so we just tried a different type of outreach style at each college. We went to six different colleges in a week and Saturdays we stayed in New Vrindaban. We really wore ourselves out. But we were experimenting with how to communicate Krsna Consciousness with College Students and Professors. We held Bhagavad Gita classes, we utilized Radheshyam Prabhu's books for teaching, we held Kirtan nights, we held meditation groups, we held cooking classes, we tried so many things and everything we tried worked. Each type of class attracted certain individuals and each event was a success. Any problems came about due to our own limitations.

In due course of time, Atmananda Prabhu had to stop travelling, and I was left alone again. Fortunately by the end of Summer Narasinghachaitayna Prabhu, Gauranga Kishore Prabhu and Jagadish Chaitanya Prabhu also moved to New Vrindaban. Soon Bhakta William came, Chaitanya Prabhu, Jason Prabhu, and now Bhakta Chris have now come. Yugala Kishore Prabhu is also here. Some have left, some have come back and some will be back. Many more will come to help us. Gradually, with much pain to my heart, but with all neccessity others started to take over the various programs and some programs we have had to stop. With a gradually growing ashram of sincere and educated brahmacaris we have had to adjust our activities to spend more time with each other and serve in New Vrindaban.

After four years, other than the occasional programs about America, I mainly visit Athens Ohio. Each week, another devotee and I will travel the two and a half hours to Ohio University. We hold a cooking class each Tuesday night. We arrive at 6:30pm and leave at about 11:00pm. We usually sleep at around 1am after a full day of mangal arati, japa, diety seva, class, cooking for a hundred students, driving two and a half hours, teaching a cooking class, speaking with a hundred or so students, cleaning up, kirtan and driving to our house in Athens and calming down a bit with a few intimate friends. Its a full days sacrifice. One which I love and do not ever want to give up. I love the students and community which has developed around our cooking class. The students have called it Vegan Cooking Workshop, acronym VCW. I call it Vaisnava Culture Workshop-VCW. A place where one can learn to serve, learn to love and dedicate your every action to the Lord. Association with devotees is powerful. The process of Bhakti is inconceivable, and Mahaprabhu has his plans to purify everyone associated with this process. We hold a morning program of Japa, Gita, kirtan and breakfast each Wednesday. We spend the mid day with students for lunch at their homes, resting, studying, preparing lectures, and cooking dinner. Each Wednesday night we hold a discussion group which about 15 students attend. We gradually guide the students beyond their misconceptions of spiritual life, provide them proper Sastric based philosophy about themselves, this world, and God while teaching them how to apply knowledge to their lives. Students take up lives of purity and apply Sadhana to their daily routine. There are many things to say about each of our programs, but mainly it can be summed up by saying that I accept each of these students as my master and thank them again and again for providing the opportunity to serve Srila Prabhupada's movement. I am indebted to each of them. I am crying as I pray that I will see them again and that Krsna remains within their lives in some way or another.

Ride Within : Regulative Jingles of Freedom

We drove off to Atma prabhus house in golden valley. Here A few Disciples of HH maha Visnua maharajs reside. His Holiness is the main teacher who visits as well as Ganapati maharaja and HH Romapad Maharaja. All of their visits are rare and the devotees are always eager to have visitors. We stopped for the evening chanted for some time, had an arati for their Radhe Shyam dieties, and then had nice qinuoa kitchiri. After Prasadam we were entertained by the most melodic chanting of Ananta Vijay Krsna Prabhu (our MAHA MUFFIN creater). He is good at everything he does. He graduated with a degree in Music. Now on his spare time he records jingles about not smoking, not dringing, not eating meat and sells them to big nonprofit Corps for their advertising. He is really gifted. I look forward to seeing what he'll do in the future. As we arrived the house there was no snow, as we left there was a half a foot of snow which covered everything. Sai was wearing sandals and suffered greatly. Chaitanya scared the boys a little bit with his Michaigan teenage antics such as sliding around in the snow and turning corners out of control. Lots of fun considering we didn't die or fall into one of Minneapolis' ten thousands lakes.

Atma picked us up very early the next morning and dropped us off at the airport in more than enough time to catch our plane. Minneapolis finished.

Many of our students have graduated and have obtained jobs in little towns or in big cities that don't have temples or much association. Its a whole new area in our outreach considering that our students are now working people and are supporting us monetarily now. They are also preaching on their own and inviting us everywhere for programs. We all look forward to seeing what is going to evolve with these Krsna Conscious relationships which we have established in our youth.

Ride Within : The Divine Couple say Hello!

The next day we nicely slept in and had a sweet morning of japa, kirtan, Srimad Bhagavatam class and a big breakfast of MAHA MUFFINS. One disciple of Maha Visnu Maharaja has a small business of making prasadam baked goods and sells them at coffee shops all over the city. He stays up all night baking and delivers them himself. This morning Atma Prabhu came over and dropped them off with Big Bhima. We feasted then fell asleep for three hours. In the evening we headed off to an evening program. Chaitanya led nice kirtan and I spoke for a few hours from second Chapter of BG. One older gentleman named Rama stopped the class towards the end and asked," so who is God Visnu or Krsna?" With the permission of the group we went into explaining the Tattva of Each. At the end he exclaimed," I'm convinced now, Krsna is Supreme." Others said each week he asks the same question but this week he finally surrendered. I was happy to be used in some service to eradicate his doubts. One little boy came up to me and I asked his name. He said his name and then exclaimed "I have two thumbs!" He had two thumbs on one hands and he gave me a high five. At the end of the program the kids came down and did a short spontaneous play of Krsna and Balarama entering Mathura city and meeting various personalities. It was nice meeting a new group of Vaisnavas and seeing how Krsna Consciousness and its Vaisnava culture is spread all over. Great job Atma!

The next day we slept in and had a similar morning program. At five oclock we headed to an evening where we met Gaura Shakti Prabhu(ASBSP) and many others. It was nice to meet Nitai Prabhu and his wife who are now new parents. I had not seen them in many years since they last visited New V. New Vrindaban is a special place to live because everyone comes there. So by living there and serving you automatically befriend thousands of Vaisnavas. This makes travel very easy. Hopefully travelling back to the Spiritual world too. We met Rama again and he was a funny character. We told us all about his proffession and we met his wife. Many unique stories and new friends.

Sunday was ekadasi. We made arrangements to meet Jimmy and Terri Divine. The are very dear friends to New Vrindaban. They have been visiting New Vrindaban for over thirty years now. When we told New vrindaban devotees we were going to Minneapolis the first thing they said was "You have to meet Jimmy and Terri!" I had met them three years previously at New vrindaban when I was younger and taking care of the cows. So this ekadasi was dedicated to meeting them. The whole house was so amazingly Krsna Conscious. Not only that but specifically New Vrindaban Conscious. They told us that they considered their home to be a New V sattelite center. Indeed it felt as if we were home. Their dieties were very beautiful and most notably they had a very small golden Nimai diety who was sleeping in a small bed. We chanted for some time while Terri made fresh Buckwheat waffles, seasoned potatoes, fruit salad and mango lassi. We were not feeling the pangs of Ekadasi today. We then looked at old picture books and heard unlimited stories. Then for the next three hours we watched Srila Prabhupada's chronological videos made by Iskcon Cinema. We were laughing, sleeping and drinking hot tea. It was nice to relax with our parents for some time. We finally left after taking the blessing of the Narasimha brain scan of Kirtananada Swami. They sent some jam with me to give Mother Gopa and Damodar Prabhu but it got taken away in security at the aiport. sorry. I did my best.

Ride Within : side trip: Minneapolis

Talpasai Prabhu

Balaramcandra and Talpasai Prabhu

Cowherdboy Lila

1st house program of trip
Minneapolis side trip
January 11th-15th
I never thought I would have a reason to go to Minneapolis. When I was a child in the deserts of Arizona, I always wanted to experience the largest mall in the World which was located there. I think someone has stated that there is a larger one now in Canada somewhere. Either way we didn't go.

Chaitanya Prabhu and myself got dropped off at the airport by our old friend Brittany. She is a great girl who we've known for a few years now from our college outreach in Athens Ohio. She has always been more than supportive of our lifestyle and accepted us within her group of friends. She is known to go out of her way to help her Monkey friends. We dropped our car off at her house. At first we attempted to ask various devotees for assistance but for some reason no one could help us. We even offered to have a program but everyone declined. We felt a little awkward dealing with the devotees and unfortunately all my previous negative feelings about Columbus came back and I had to check myself with various uplifting prayers and meditations. So we called one of our students and she was more than willing to help us. She spaced out a bit on the drive and missed our exit but we made it on time since the plane's water pipes froze and they couldn't fix them. So we flew on a plane to Chicago with no water, no coffee, and no toilets. We just caught our connecting flight in Chicago and arrived to Minneapolis just on time.

The reason why we headed to Minneapolis was due to our very good friend Talpasai Prabhu being there. We've known him for about three years now. We met just after Atmanada Prabhu and I started college programs at the University of West Virginia. Shantanu Prabhu was also attending that program and had mentioned to Talpasai that a few brahmacaris from the temple were coming each week and explaining Bhagavad Gita , doing kirtan, and bringing the best Halava in the world.

Talpasai Prabhu was already reading a certain version of Bhagavad Gita, and chanting Visnu Sahasranam early each morning. He was already vegetarian and took no intoxication. After a few programs he started to chant and read Srila Prabhupada's Gita. His purports blew him away and he took up KC with great conviction. Immediately he bagan to teach others the glorious explanations of bhakti which Srila Prabhupada has given. Within due course of time he accepted the glorious Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as his worshipable Lord. He started an internet sanga group and started to share all his realizations with others. He practically held the whole program together himself and was dear to everyone. He did this for almost three years while he did his masters. Recently he obtained a job in Minneapolis and had to leave the close association of all his friends in West Virginia and New Vrindaban.

We promised him that we would visit once he got settled so this was our chance to fulfill our promise. He's working a most boring job and misses all His friends back home. He really has no interest to work anymore for money and is only doing so because the Senior Vaisanvas recommend he do so for some time.

Krsna nicely arranged he have very wonderful association with great Vaisnavas in Minneapolis. There is no offical Iskcon Temple yet there are many devotees scattered about who meet weekly for programs. Krsna even blessed him with a roommate named Laxsmipati who was nicely trained in Chowpatty's IIT Bace. He simply chants and reads Bhagavatam. Nothing else, no other interests, except his PHD work which comes second in his life.

So Sai picked us up at he airport via the Light rail system. Its a great way to beat the cold and the traffic. Minneapolis was zero degrees F. We arrived at his house and because he was at work all day he had not cooked dinner so I cooked for us all in a half hour or so. It was a great delight. I used to cook for him each week for over two years and now i had the chance to do it again. A college preacher really does develop a parental mood which is very satisfying. Chaitanya did joke that this is the kali yuga symptom where guests come to others homes and cook themselves. Later we had to drive ourselves too. We just didnt trust our south indian friend's blizzard driving skills.

Late in the evening Chaitanya's sister arrived at the amtrak station to be with us for the weekend and also Anandchaitanya Prabhu flew in for the weekend.

H.H. Sivarama Swami : VSM Pt 5

Vaisnava-siddhanta-mala, by Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura
Fifth Chapter - Difference (Bheda) is Real

QUESTION: In the Vedas, both Bhagavan and the jivas (souls) are spoken of as being conscious (caitanya). Does that mean that there is no real difference between the two?
ANSWER: No. Bhagavan’s consciousness is all-pervading (vibhu-caitanya). The jiva’s consciousness is infinitesimal (anu-caitanya). The difference between the two is not imaginary. Bhagavan is the Lord of the maya-sakti. He is never in illusion. The jivas are subordinate to the maya-sakti. They may fall into illusion when they leave the shelter of Krsna.

QUESTION: How many types of bheda (difference) are there?
ANSWER: There are two types of bheda: vyavaharika (conventional difference) and tattvika (essential difference).

QUESTION: What is vyavaharika-bheda?
ANSWER: This can be seen in the difference between a clay pot and a piece of cloth. These seem to be different things. But

both originate from the same source — the soil of the earth. That means in their original or essential condition as soil, there is no difference between clay and cloth. The difference is merely conventional.

QUESTION: What is tattvika-bheda?
ANSWER: This is when one thing is different from another thing in its function as well as in its original cause.

QUESTION: Is the difference between the jiva (soul) and Bhagavan (God) vyavaharika or tattvika?
ANSWER: Tattvika.

QUESTION: How can that be?
ANSWER: Because in no condition can the jiva become Bhagavan.

QUESTION: Then how are we to understand the declaration of the Upanisads, “tat-tvam-asi” (”you are the same”)?
ANSWER: This declaration, taught to the great sage Sveta-ketu, means that the soul is distinct from matter because it is caitanya (conscious). All living entities are spiritual beings, different from their bodies formed of unconscious matter.

Thus they are the same. But it does not mean that the anu-caitanya is the vibhu-caitanya.

QUESTION: But there are scriptural statements declaring the oneness of the jiva with the all-pervading consciousness (brahman).
ANSWER: These statements are true, but they must be understood from the proper viewpoint. From the point of view of the individual soul, the difference (bheda) between jiva and brahman is eternal and true. But from the point of view of brahman, the non-difference (abheda) is eternal and true. Thus bheda and abheda are both eternal and true.

QUESTION: But isn’t this contradictory?
ANSWER: The Lord’s potency is inconceivable (acintya-sakti). Within His potency all contradictory truths exist in complete harmony. But because the tiny jivas are so limited, they think that the resolution of such contradictions is impossible.

QUESTION: If both viewpoints are true, why do the devotees of Krsna condemn the philosophy of oneness?
ANSWER: Because those who propound the philosophy of oneness say that only the oneness of the soul with the supreme is eternal, and that all difference is temporary. Sri Madhvacarya has established that the difference is also eternal, and by proving this, he has ascertained the truth of acintya-bhedabheda (simultaneous inconceivable oneness and difference). Those

who propound either only bheda (difference) or abheda (oneness) adhere to a one-sided and incomplete philosophy.

QUESTION: Who teaches the doctrine of oneness?
ANSWER: The nirvisesa (impersonalist) philosophers teach the doctrine of oneness. The savisesa (personalist) philosophers do not accept this doctrine.

QUESTION: Who teaches the savisesa philosophy?
ANSWER: All the Vaisnava sampradayas (schools) teach it.

QUESTION: How many sampradayas do the Vaisnavas have?
ANSWER: There are four. All of these schools teach personal devotion for Bhagavan; thus each in its own way differentiates

the Lord (as the object of devotion) from His energies. There is no actual disagreement between the four Vaisnava schools because they all reject the one-sided philosophy of nondistinction between Bhagavan and the jivas.

QUESTION: If there is no disagreement between the four Vaisnava schools, why did Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu accept only the doctrine of Sri Madhvacarya?
ANSWER: The special characteristic of Madhvacarya’s doctrine is that it very clearly and thoroughly defeats the doctrine of oneness. When the jiva thinks himself one with God, he simply places himself into unnecessary distress. To lead the souls along the path away from distress, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu accepted the doctrine of Madhvacarya. But by doing so He did not minimize the importance of the other three Vaisnava schools.

It is the aspiration of a devotee that while he chants the Hare Krishna maha-mantra his eyes will fill with tears, his voice falter and his heart throb. These are good signs in chanting the holy name of the Lord.

H.H. Sivarama Swami : British Airways Reverses Religious Policy

British Airways reverses their policy on religious symbols

LONDON (AP) — British Airways PLC said Friday that it had overturned a dress code rule that had barred employees from wearing visible religious symbols.

Public controversy flared over the policy after Nadia Eweida, a check-in clerk at Heathrow airport, refused to stop wearing a tiny cross on a neck chain. She protested that the policy amounted to religious discrimination because Sikhs and Muslims were allowed to wear head coverings.

British Airways said those coverings are part of the firm’s official uniform and featured company colours.

In a statement, BA said it had reviewed the airline’s uniform policy and consulted religious groups, including representatives from the Church of England, the Catholic Church and the Muslim Council of Britain.

“Uniform policy should be amended to allow a lapel pin symbol of faith such as a Christian cross or a Star of David, with some flexibility for individuals to wear a symbol of faith on a chain,” the statement read.

BA chief executive Willie Walsh said the company had unintentionally found itself “at the centre of one of the hottest social issues in current public debate,” adding that the decision was taken to ensure employees of all faiths felt they were being treated equally.

New Vrndavan, USA : When Govardhana-sila came to New Vrindaban

2007-01-12-govardhana.JPG

(Taken from an undated 1983 Brijabasi Spirit)
When Radhanatha Swami returned from the Mayapura festival this year, he brought back a special gift for the holy dhama. Kirtananda Swami told him in India, “Your mission in coming to India is to obtain one Govardhana-sila to be worshipped along with Sri Nathaji.” Radhanatha Swami and Mahabuddhi went to see Narayana Maharaja, one of Srila Prabhupada’s great supporters, and received instructions on how to obtain this sacred form of the Lord. Narayana Maharaja explained to them that the sila can’t be directly taken from Govardhana Hill and worshipped, but must be presented to one as a gift from a Vrindaban Babaji.

With the help of Omkara dasa, the pujari at the Krsna-Balarama temple in Vrindaban, Radhanatha Swami and Mahabuddhi went to Govardhana Hill and after a hot hour of searching under the blazing midday sun of Vrindaban, they found that which they were seeking: a beautiful Govardhana sila, big enough to be carried in two hands. Carefully wrapping His Lordship in a silk cloth, the trio proceeded to Radha-kunda and bathed Him. Still needing the blessings of a Vrindaban Brijabasi, they visited the samadhi-temple of Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, where they introduced themselves to the head priest. Radhanatha Swami handed the sila to the priest, who began chanting various prayers. After a few minutes, the priest handed the sila back to Radhanatha Maharaja with his blessings to begin the puja. Also, according to Omkara, Govardhana-sila must be offered huge amounts of foodstuffs and bathed in large quantities of milk.

H.H. Umapati Swami : Now You See It, Now You Don't

It has just occurred to me that I really am eternal. I know I've been hearing it and reading it for years, but I never thought about the reality of it.

If I don't go back to Godhead, then after this life there will be another one. Of course, it's nice to know that I will keep living, but in what conditions?

I will have to start all over again, from nothing. All the knowledge I have acquired in this life will be lost, and I will have to start learning to read again, assuming I even have a human birth. I will have to go through the whole struggle all over again to build something that will again be lost at death.

And it goes on forever, starting again and losing everything at death, again and again and again.

It's given me a new look at the following statement in Srimad Bhagavatam (1.1.1):

"Only because of Him do the material universes, temporarily manifested by the reactions of the three modes of nature, appear factual, although they are unreal."

How can it be unreal? Srila Prabhupada says, on the other hand, that the world is temporary but not false:

"The creation is not false, but it is a temporary manifestation just to give a chance for the conditioned souls to go back to Godhead." [Srimad Bhagavatam 2.10.4]

Why then do the scriptures also say it is unreal?

Because it is temporary. We struggle so hard to obtain temporary things that vanish from our grip, like a magician's illusion: Now you see it, now you don't.

I may struggle to acquire a fortune, and it all seems real—the struggle, the money, the goal. But at the end of my life, it will all disappear.

So as real as it seems, it is also an illusion because in the end it all disappears, without a trace, without even a memory.

And I will have to start again, maybe a man struggling to get rich, many a tiger struggling to catch a buffalo, maybe the buffalo struggling to escape from the tiger.

Where will I be, what will I be, a hundred trillion lives from now? a hundred trillion creations from now? And that's nowhere near the end because there isn't any end.

It's like the old saying: You can't win, you can't break even, you can't quit playing.

All this, and yet the way to an eternal, deathless life of bliss and knowledge is on the tip of my tongue.

Hare Krishna.

Dandavats.com : Eco-Responsible Prasada Distribution- A Positive Alternative

Hare KrishnaBy Lilasuka dasi

I am so happy to see some environmental issues being discussed amongst the devotee community. It is an issue for everyone in the world wherever you are. The saying "Think Globally, Act Locally" is particularly applicable at this time in history. We all affect each other and we each make a difference, everyday.

New Vrndavan, USA : Too Much Green Bus

By Srila Jiva Goswami dasa

At first, the general rule was that if you were driving a vehicle along the main road, and you saw a Devotee, you should stop and give that Devotee a ride. Some Devotees preferred to walk. Some Devotees preferred not to stop and pick anyone up sometimes, due to being in a Transcendental Hurry.

Devotees moved from Bahulabhana out to Dharamatma’s, where Sudhanu Prabhu lives now. Devotees needed rides from Ma Eddy’s, the little store out on the corner of 88 and Limestone Ridge, all the way to the Palace. Devotees constantly had cause to go back and forth on the Ridge Road which led to the Palace. Because getting a ride was an unpredictable thing, a regular Shuttle Bus Service evolved.

The bus was actually simply a van. The Service was to drive the van back and forth and to pick up and drop off Devotees. This worked very well, if not perfectly. For example, there were some Devotees who were a little personally confused, and would not pick up one of the Mothers. Some drivers pushed the factually dilapidated van too hard and accelerated mechanical failure.

I had the Bus Service for a while myself. Then the Palace Road was often in very poor repair. It was fraught with potholes and crumbling edges. It was tough on the vehicle’s suspension. One Devotee advised me that I should drive really fast; it was his theory that by driving as quickly as possible, the wheels would not have much of a chance to drop down and bang in the potholes.

I asked Varshana Maharaja, the Master of Heavy Equipment, (among other things … Master of Humility, for example) what his opinion was on the “…drive fast, skim pothole” theory. “If I had a baseball bat,” he said, “and I hit you with it, would you rather I hit you very hard or nice and easy?”

“You’re asking me that?” I smiled back at Varshana Maharaja. He was known as Kasyapa Prabhu then. I could see he was hesitating all of a sudden.

“Well …”

“Yuh,” I said. “Given a choice, I’d much rather you hit me hard with the bat.” I was being silly, but affectionate.

“You know what I mean,” he returned.

I did know what he meant. I drove the shuttle “bus” slowly, generally. I stopped for anyone, of course. I tried to do the Service to the best of my ability. I came to know every crevice and dip in the Palace Road. Back and forth, back and forth, it was great, picking up Devotees who were on their way to rendering Service. Truly I was Serving the Servers. I liked it very much.

Eventually, the community got a real little school bus. Then we were really cooking. This was one of those short busses. I think it was about 20 feet in length. We painted it green. It looked great and it ran great. It was our dedicated Shuttle Bus. Sometimes we used it to go pick up arrivals at the Pittsburgh Airport.

Often, on the Shuttle Bus runs, upon passing the Palace, I’d see several big Greyhound size tour busses. People came regularly from all over the country and indeed, the world, to visit the Palace of Gold. Easily hundreds of people came every day. Some tour bus operators did not want to bring their big beautiful busses onto our most often decrepit Palace Road. The notion of driving fast or slow in order to entertain or eschew the ruts and potholes was not the desired mentality of many a highway cruiser.

Then one day, the Community came up with a full size school bus. This bus was not used as a shuttle bus for Devotees, but to go out and meet the incoming tourists at a convenient place, and transfer our guests from the big highway liner type of luxury bus to our own ready-to-rock transpiration; the new full length school bus. We also used the bus in stages, for Devotees, when we went out en masse, to vote in local elections for example.

I truly loved the new bus. It was used, actually, but like the smaller bus, it ran great. It had air brakes, which I loved. It was painted green too. I loved the nearly horizontal steering wheel. I loved the fact that out on Route 88, I had to plan ahead on the turns. At a corner, when you got that big steering wheel going, it had a momentum of its own. When straightening out after a turn, the wheel spun practically of its own volition. You’d not want to let it get away from you. You could jam your thumb if you tried to stop it once that big wheel started going and was centering too fast.

I liked it when I could look up in the mirror, and see the empty cabin behind me, and remember my camp days back in New York, where in the City, we did not have school busses per se, but the regular city bus to go to school. When it came to summer camp though, then we rode on school busses just like the one I was privileged to operate lo so many years later. I’d look in the mirror and imagine I could see the ghost of the child that was me, back then, sitting where I loved to sit, all the way in the back, on the deck beyond the pronounced wells of the rear wheels so I could exaggerate a diving board effect when we hit a bump or a rise, and I could fling myself around on the broad bench seat as if I was on a ride at an amusement park. The reason I liked remembering this way was that I’d come so far in a direction I’d never imagined, and I was doing just exactly what I wanted most of all to be doing. So many years later at New Vrindabana, there I was, in the role of a bus driver.

When a Tour Bus was scheduled to come in and the driver did not want to deal with the Palace Road, our solution was to meet the incoming special commercial highway tour bus, out on Route 88, at an agreed upon time, and execute an orderly transfer of passengers.

We owned the property at the corner of Route 88 and Route 250. There I’d carefully back the big long bus up into the driveway, facing Route 88, and with my eight year old daughter, we’d wait.

Often as not, the incoming driver would zip right by our perching place in his cushy and glittering luxury cruiser with the one way tinted windows and the perpetually gasping air conditioning roaring like a mobile mountain river. We’d be obliged then to start her up, throw her in gear and take off after the incoming tour bus. Route 250 was twisting and hilly, but smooth. In hot pursuit, I’d flash my lights at the bus in front, and invariably, by the time we got to Ma Eddy’s, the driver would see us behind him and pull over. Then we’d do the transfer.

I felt very responsible, carrying these visiting guests. I was extremely careful to drive precisely and professionally. No swerving and no jostling. The fact that I’d be carrying total outsiders not only made me feel extraordinarily responsible for acting just like the best of the Devotees, I also noticed certain deference from the Community along the Palace Road as we passed. The cargo was particularly special; there was no doubt about it.

The bus was in great shape. It ran perfectly. The only problem was that the gas gage was not working, but who ever drove the bus last was under the standing instruction to top off the tank, down at the pump in the lot on the lower terrace at Bahulabhana.

Taking our passengers up to the Palace was also special to me because I got a chance to observe their reaction to the ride, and that was enlivening to me. After living right there for years, and participating in the construction of the Palace, I was in a way, too close to actually see it as others did.

The ride was all hills. It was steep in places, and full of twisting turns. Yours truly drove smoothly and steadily. I could see the passengers looking to the left and the right as we climbed, virtually towards heaven, I thought.

From Ma Eddy’s to Bahulabhana the road was down hill and winding. Coming in from Route 250, you could look out to the left and see the beautiful valley below our ridge. It was magnificent and scenic.

I drove very diligently, and watched our guests in the mirror. To the right at first, you could not see much, but up the driveways there were houses which were also New Vrindabana property. Mixed in were legacy residents, people who lived there before New Vrindabana.

Places like Agni Dhama, Dulal’s, Dharamatma’s and across the way, Loka’s, looked just like regular houses.

I was just proud to be an instrument for the introduction to something as really fine as the New Vrindabana Community back in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

After rolling down the straight hill past Dharamatma’s and Sonny Neibergall’s, where Madhava Ghosh lives now, we came to Bahulabhana, and there, clearly, we were looking at a commune. Earlier along the road, the structures were externally non different from any other building along a West Virginia Ridge. Here however, the barn, the four story structure which had an Asram on the top floor, guest rooms on the third floor, offices on the second floor and the Prasadama Hall on the ground floor, the shops, the gardens, and green house, the Devotees, bustling about, the sound of Srila Prabhupada’s lectures coming over the loud speakers, all bespoke a vibrant and thriving dedicated commune environment.

I always took the bus through there at a slow rate so the tourists on board could get a good look. I could see the interest in my passengers as they eagerly swiveled their heads from left to right, like a crowd at a tennis match.

Here were the shops, there the greenhouses, across the road, the big water purification system Jai Maurari Prabhu was putting together. And everywhere, Devotees were waving cheering and greeting. I knew from experience that it might have seemed artificial to our guests; the obvious happiness of the New Vrindabana Community, and I knew too that it was real, that the Devotees are happy, to say the least, and kind. In particular, like me, Devotees were happy to see the manifestation of our plans, of Srila Prabhupada’s Desire: Spreading The Word.

In this instance, they were coming to us. Even in this remote out of the way ridge in the hills of West Virginia, hundreds and hundreds of visitors were coming all the time.

After Bahulabhana, we were climbing again on a winding road. Now once more, the houses on either side looked like ordinary farm houses, but I knew this one to be the Girls’ Asram, that one to be the Older Girls’ Asram, this path the road up to the Motor Vehicle Shop, and so on.

Finally, we’d pop out into a relative clearing, past Mega Mala’s Store, and the environment turned again overtly to that of a Community. You could see the gates which were already in place for our planned theme park. There was the house in which Srila Prabhupada stayed when he visited. On this side, you could see huge bulldozers and a pay loader in action.

Then, just when it looked like we were heading back into the woods at the top of the ridge, we’d come to a turn and an open vista to the right, and there, apparently floating, The Palace of Gold fairly bloomed. It was a sudden blossom, in contrast to not only the farm and country all around, but the difference between what we were about was exquisitely summed in this transcendental and total vision.

There was always a sharp intake of breath from the passengers, and cameras would be clicking like mad.

We’d pull up by the gate, I’d open the swing doors, and the assigned Tour Guide would pop on board to take charge of our guests. They’d file out, eager and excited, and I’d wait to take them back in a few hours. They’d eat at the restaurant, probably; (taking Prasadam) they’d take the tour, and me? I’d meditate on my great good fortune.

One day, on the return run, back to Ma Eddy’s, and the waiting Smooth Highway Tour Bus, like an aircraft carrier, compared to our relatively motley resources, after passing through Bahulabhana, and beginning the climb up by Dharamatma’s, our engine died in the unmistakable way that engines quit when there is only one explanation: Out of gas.

We were on the hill, our momentum carried us a little way on, but I knew we were quite possibly in trouble for when I stabbed at the brakes, without power, there were no brakes.

Our hope then was the hand brake, and my prayer at the time was that somehow, in this world where spacing out was sometimes a problem, the emergency brake would operate.

Who knew? I’d taken Dodge Rama Dasa, our Town Run Vehicle to the Devotee Motor Pool with a problem once, and when Bimbadhara Prabhu could find nothing wrong, he’d advised me to “…just drive it until something falls off and then we’ll know what it is.”

Vahna, the poet who introduced me to Krsna Consciousness, was the one who’d famously stated that the Devotees treated vehicles like paper cups. One look at the yard behind the Motor Pool with the sawed in half chassis, the broken wheels and assorted forlorn vehicle body parts, affirmed that notion.

Now we were going slower and slower up the hill with our precious cargo, with no power and no brakes. Later, I’d be told that I should not have assumed the previous driver had topped off the tank.

From then on I always did first make sure there was plenty of gas when I took out the big green bus, but just then, before we lost it entirely and started to roll backwards, and I was wondering about how I could handle the bus, coming down hill, faster and faster, no doubt, and how important it was to keep it out of the deep ditches on either side of the road, just then, at eight miles an hour, then five, then three, I took that hand brake and pulled it up smartly, fully expecting that it would not work.

But it did work. It halted our progress firmly and positively. I was relieved. My passengers did not seem in the least perturbed. “We’re out of gas,” I announced. Everyone simply smiled and nodded. Was the Krsna Conscious Way permeating these people already? They were quite accepting, I thought.

We made our way back down the hill, using the brake judiciously. At one point, Krpa Maya Prabhu appeared, tapping at the door. Krpa Maya was very involved in the Tourist Program. Anyone would have been concerned, but Krpa Maya Prabhu had a particular interest.

I swung open the doors and Krpa Maya leaped on board. “What’s the matter?” he asked. The alarm and worry were clear on his face.

“Out of gas,” I reported.

Krpa Maya obviously did not like it, but he did not chastise me at that time. Personally, I was overwhelmingly relieved that the hand brake was working.
“We’ll just roll back down to the pump at Bahulabhana,” I said. Krpa Maya nodded and rode with us.

As gingerly as possible I eased our bus down, pulling the brake on, letting it off just a little, keeping us at a very slow rate. Our passengers at no time seemed alarmed in the slightest.

When we were close to Bahulabhana, Krpa Maya jumped off and ran for a can of gas. When we had a little fuel, of course the engine started right up, and I was able to drive, with air brakes restored, right on up to the pumps at Bahulabhana.

As we pulled to a halt, it occurred to me that now our guests were actually in the thick of our community. Here it was not the Palace, but the inner workings. The kitchens, the paths, the cabins, the working temple, the free store all gave our visitors an unexpected transcendental immersion. They seemed to love it. As we gassed up, their cameras clicked like mad and they jumped from one side of the bus to the other.

There came Utamoja Prabhu, nodding, as always, his huge bearded persona swaying as he walked. There on the upper terrace, Kuladri Prabhu was counseling a collection of Devotees from his jeep. Our guests were transfixed.

Suddenly, Jai Murari Prabhu jumped on board. Standing with his back against the windshield he surveyed the cabin of enlivened passengers for a moment. Jai Murari’s intense joy at this scene was palpable to me. I love Jai Murari Prabhu. He guided me in the process of dressing Lord Caitanya: “Watch three times, then I watch you three times, and then you are ready.” With his Indiana Accent, I really liked the way he’d say “Warsh” instead of “Wash.” We’d be ladling cleaning substances over Lord Caitanya, the Deities’ Dressing Room was filled with immaculate Pujaris, the muted sound of sacred mantras, bells ringing intermittently, the Various Deities, Lord Narasingha Deva, Sala Gram Sila, all allowing Themselves to be cared for, and my ears were cocked for Jai Maurai Prabhu’s Transcendental whispered instruction as he guided me, hoping to hear him use that word “Warsh.”

Why was I so fascinated by Jai Murari’s accent? It was because we were all so very different. A city boy who’d been a Science Fiction Writer, a plumber from Indiana, a farmer from California, all from extremely different backgrounds, yet all with the same goal and mood, albeit at different stages.

And then, while the gas was gurgling into that empty tank, Jai Murari Prabhu took it upon himself to jump on board and face our riders. I could see the copious ear hair he sported fairly moving about in the breeze. “Welcome to New Vrindabana!” Jai Murari called out joyfully. He was grinning from ear to fuzzy ear. All the passengers and I grinned right back at that beautiful soul.

“Thank you!” the passengers responded. They were having a great time. After tanking up, we were ready to go in safety and peace. I thought then and now that it was of course, Krsna who pulled the brake for us and saw that it worked.

In those times, Dear Reader, there was scarcely an event or non event that did not lead me to chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
