Kurma dasa : What...?

more sweets:

Received this letter yesterday from Felicity Shah in Victoria:

'Dear Kurma, thanks for your website. Please tell me, what are those colourful cakes/sweets pictured on the front page of your website?'

'Dear Felicity, they are traditional Bengali confectionery called Sandesh, made in Bhaktivedanta Manor in England, out of panir cheese and sugar, with some totally natural flavourings like saffron, cardamom, rose, carob, vanilla etc, then wonderfully hand-painted, and finally offered to Krishna.

They are very much sought-after, and taste as wonderful as they look. I photographed them last year whilst visiting London.

sweets:

They are prepared by a team of ladies headed by the now-elderly Kulangana Dasi, whose daily sweet-cooking for well over twenty years has become world famous.'

Kurma dasa : A Walk Down Memory Lane

My business with tending to the immediate needs of my Sydney-based parents is done for now; I shall return there in less than 8 weeks.

I'm back in Melbourne on the way home to Perth. Melbourne is not on the way from Sydney to Perth, but anyway, it's a scheduled stop.

Tomorrow I take part in the famous Moomba Festival, which commences mid-morning. We will chant Hare Krishna the length of the parade route. Loads of fun. With half a million onlookers.

But back to the gist of today's blog. Why Memory Lane?

An old associate Madhu Sevita, now the Governing Body Commissioner for Italy, while negotiating my ill-fated trip to Milano last year, sent me some pictures from his files. This is one:

archive photo:

This was taken in Juhu Beach, Bombay, April 1974 - 33 years ago. The event was morning or evening class - can't exactly discern - in the then temporary temple structure.

In this picture we are all hearing attentively from our beloved Guru Srila Prabhupada. Most of us were just teenagers, or in our early twenties. And for me, and many others, it was our first trip to India and a great adventure.

Every morning as the sun rose we would depart for sankirtana, congregational chanting on the streets, and visit various different local beach-side suburbs - Ville Parle is one name I remember - and announce to the still-sleeping people {via the sound vibrations of the Maha Mantra} of the sublime spiritual heritage that was still extant for all Indians.

Some local papers in Bombay had commented that the Hare Krishna chanting was creating a 'nuisance'. Prabhupada was disgusted with this attitude and invited us to perform a civil disobedience in the form of more chanting to open people's eyes to the cultural reality.

Public Sankirtana chanters, Prabhupada pointed out, had one time been a very common event throughout Bombay, even as late as the early twentieth-century. But the onset of this materialistic age had laid it dormant.

There are many now-famous personalities in the above photo - some prominent sanyasis, some already departed.

Can you see Acyutananda Swami? And Sridhara (later, Swami, now departed) Prithu Putra (later Swami, now departed), Tatpur (later Swami), Bhakti Vidya Purna (later Swami), Madhu Sevita, Kurma, Yadubara (famous film-maker), Jaya Sacinandana, Dinanatha, Sabhapati, Basu Ghosh, to name but a few.

It was our glory days. A wonderful opportunity to sit and hear wondrous things from our dear Srila Prabhupada.

Sita-pati dasa : Thought for the day...

I think the height of hubris is the belief that your product, service, or idea is so good that you don't have to sell it. It's that arrogance that says: "You know what, we make such good stuff, we're just going to wait for them to come and ask for it, and we're going to be doing them a favour by giving it to them."

We all have encountered vendors like that. I believe that in this day and age people don't do business with us just because they like us, but they *will* choose to not do business with us, even if we have the best product, if they don't like us.

So persuasive communication says that we need to communicate in such a way that we're selling. I always like to define 'selling', because I think so many professionals have a bias that selling is somehow negative.

'Selling' is helping people make a decision that is good for them. 'Manipulation' is helping people make a decision that's good for you. If I believe in the value of my ideas, or my products, or my services, I owe it to you to express that in such a way that you'll buy it. If your service is superior, but you don't present it well, and your client goes elsewhere, and pays for an inferior service, in a way you've cheated your client.

- Mark Sanborn, author of You Don't Need a Title to be a Leader: How Anyone, Anywhere Can Make a Positive Difference

When asked whose fault it was if someone doesn't take a book when offered one in the street, Srila Prabhupada said: "It is their fault. They are envious, like a snake."

In this way he encouraged his disciples to continue to endeavour without becoming discouraged or self-critical. However, he continued:

"So therefore you must become expert snake-charmers."

So while the "blame" for people not taking to Krishna Consciousness might be said to lie with them, the onus is on expert members of the Krishna Consciousness movement to "competently find the ways and means to inject Krishna Consciousness into the dull brains of the materialistic population".

The fact of the matter is that the product is so good. It answers the problems that people are trying to solve: Meaning in life, work / life balance, relational stability, environmental damage, climate change, international relations, you name it.

We just have to give people the opportunity to experience it for themselves - a free sample - and they'll be able to see that for themselves.

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : Bhagavatam Meditations from New Vrindaban

When I was in India recently I picked up a copy of Bhurijana Prabhu's new book, Unvieling His Lotus Feet. It is like a study guide to the first four cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam. It has really been nice going through the first canto, even right at the begining of Bhagavatam we get such an intimate picture of Krishna. Krishna's first appearance is when Arjuna orders Krishna to drive his chariot to chase after Ashvatama, then so many sweet interactions with His devotees, saving Pariksit Maharaj, receiving the prayers of Queen Kunti, going before Bhisma as he is departing this mortal world, what a touching scene as Bhisma meditates on his most cherished form of the Lord as the Chariot driver of Arjuna, who broke His own vow to protect His devotee, offering respects to the greatest devotees of the Lord, the Gopis, Bhisma gives up his body, and ultimately Krishna Himself departs leaving the Pandavas greif stricken in separation from him.

The conversation between Yudhistira and Arjuna is particularly heart rending.
Yudhistira begins to question Arjuna about why he is dejected and ultimately asks him, "Or is it that you are feeling empty for all time because you might have lost your most intimate friend, Lord Krishna? O my brother Arjuna, I can think of no other reason for your becoming so dejected."

Süta Gosvami said: Arjuna, the celebrated friend of Lord Krishna, was grief-stricken because of his strong feeling of separation from Krishna, over and above all Maharaj Yudhistira's speculative inquiries.

With great difficulty he checked the tears of grief that smeared his eyes. He was very distressed because Lord Krishna was out of his sight, and he increasingly felt affection for Him.

Remembering Lord Krishna and His well-wishes, benefactions, intimate familial relations and His chariot driving, Arjuna, overwhelmed and breathing very heavily, began to speak.

Arjuna said: O King! The Supreme Personality of Godhead Hari, who treated me exactly like an intimate friend, has left me alone.

I have just lost Him whose separation for a moment would render all the universes unfavorable and void, like bodies without life.

Then Arjuna begins to remember all the intimate pastimes he shared with the Lord.
and ultimately he says, "Now I am attracted to those instructions imparted to me by the Personality of Godhead [Govinda] because they are impregnated with instructions for relieving the burning heart in all circumstances of time and space."

New Vrndavan, USA : Please May I Have Another

By Srila Jiva Goswami dasa

My dear Eyes and Ears; Please accept my worthless obeisances at your lotus feet.

I was (am) one of those guys who read too much of what I can. It wasn’t until 1998 that I realized why I’d never heard anyone say, “Par-a-dijim.” (Paradigm)

Having bumped into “The Bhagavada Gita As It Is,” the way a fool might stumble into a rainbow, I asked, “Is there more?” It seemed Too Good and yes, all Too Wonderful. The Devotees! “Is there more?”

Vahna Prabhu personally gave me his copy of “The Nectar of Devotion.” It was one of those pink original paperbacks. You know the book. It is like a text of Devotee Etiquette, only completely linked with Scripture, and Reason. Srila Prabhupada and His Writing is Divine.

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

I found myself at Old New Vrindabana, looking around at the Thousands of Devotees; Utta Moj! Along always with the aside, “(He’s amazing!)”

I took Prasadama with the Devotees, noting the Gracious Ways the Devotees Served each other, it seemed to me, in accordance with all that I’d over and over, over-read.

There was one bright eyed specimen, Chedi Shatru. This guy was not overtly sociable. You’d see him over by the “garbage,” with a kerchief tied around his head like a Ninja. His moves were quick too; almost bird like, sometimes. I noticed he never ate with The Devotees, but hung around, outside, waiting to come in … after. I’d read about this: Humility.

Perhaps even … (as he scampered up the side of a hill into the sunlight and trees) … feigning a transcendental madness.

The intensity was no feint. His glasses, when he wore them, were patched with a Band-Aid at one corner. The eyes behind them where white and blue, white and blue, and did not seem to blink.

One day, after noon Prasada, I cleaned my place and then waited. Almost immediately, Chedi came right on in. He began helping himself from the leftover Prasada and Merge. Then, using a sheet of newspaper, for a plate, and two fingers as a spoon, he began to take. He seemed thoughtful, among his elbows and knees.

My heart said, “Renunciate.” I sidled over. “Excuse me,” I tried not to chirp. There was no overt response but a shaking of rice from the fingers. He had heard. He waited. I inched up a little.
“I was just wondering,” I warbled. “Why do you wait until after The Others have gone before you take Prasadama.”

At this he turned to me. His eyes were clear as lights. I remember them now. I knew what I expected: A Transcendental Mystical Educational Enlightening Answer.

In what I saw as the beam from his eyes, bits of my question reverberated faintly “… just wondering … wait … why … after …”

“BECAUSE THE DEVOTEES ARE PIGS!!” he screamed. Flecks of matter sprayed in my direction.

“Oh …” To myself I whispered, “That wasn’t in the book.”

Puzzling back now today Dear Reader, I realize, as a Real Renunciate, Krsna had given the boy Chedi a Perfect way to get rid of another potential distraction.

A folyosó mögötti kis szobát Gambhiranak nevezik. Most mitévõ legyek? Hová menjek, hogy megtaláljam Nanda Maharaja fiát?” „Kihez szóljak? Ki értheti meg csalódottságomat? Nanda Maharaja fia nélkül megszakad a szívem!”… Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila 2.4-16

Gaura Sakti das, New Vraja Dham - Hungary : Sundara and Visala arrived to the Gosala

The calves arrived at down. They are beautiful. They are a bit tired and apprehensive but I managed to make friends with them a little when I climbed into their pen. They are a bit different. One of them is two weeks old and a little girlish, he looks like Parvati, it is difficult to distinguish them. Sivarama Maharaja gave him the name Sundara which means beautiful. The other boy is three weeks old, little spunkier, he looks very strongly built. His name is Visala which means powerful or mighty. In their little hurdle the mood is as three of them were the nursery kids and Lalita the kindergarten teacher :)

boceregx.jpg

My friend Jozsi gave the donation for one of the calves, and Bhaktipada prabhu`s friends were clubbing their resources for redeeming the other calf and bringing them home. I would like to thank them very much for their help. Krishna will repay them a hundred times even though sincere well-wishers do not desire reward for their actions. However the greatest gift is the loving relationship itself that we can develop with these little living beings in the coming years.

So they also became our family members and we take care of them as our brothers. And they will thank for the protection with their assiduous work as oxen work on the land shoulder to shoulder with men to produce life giving grains. Maybe only a few of you know that hundred years ago wheat was still called “life” in many places.

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : A lazy day in New Vrindaban

Today was another wonderful day in the Dham. I love giving Bhagavatam Class here because it really feels like you are speaking to Krishna, because there are more deities than people in attendance.

The weather was fantastic. The sun was shinning bright with a high in the sixties, you can't beat that.

The highlight of the day was playing with Keshava and Madhava, everyone including the cows were in a good mood because of the warm and sunny weather. At one point I thought I might have to convert to budhism because it seemed like Keshava was intent on chewing off my sikha, somehow in the end he settled for licking my head.

Cows are such loving affectionate creatures, every time I go to visit them I am amazed at how loving and social they are. No wonder they are so dear to Krishna.

Kurma dasa : Recommended Reading

old souls:

Yesterday I visited Borders Bookshop here in Sydney and obtained a book on Reincarnation research. This was not flaky, new-age speculation, but rather a well-written account based on scientific tests collaborating authentic, strictly documented cases.

I personally need no convincing of the transmigration of the soul at death. But my father does. The other day my father reminded me that he felt that "The Spiritual Master" (my Spiritual Preceptor, Srila Prabhupada, whom my father met in 1971) was the greatest man of the 20th century.

Still my father admits to still being a stubborn agnostic, and needs convincing. "No-one has ever come back to prove that they lived before" is his rote answer to my attempts at explaining how it all works.

So after discovering a massive list of highly regarded literature on all things 'paranormal' (have a look at this - scroll up the page for a full list), I've obtained a volume to brush up on some case histories.

The book I have started reading is entitled 'Old Souls' by Tom Shroder.

Here's some blurb about the book:

"All across the globe, small children spontaneously speak of previous lives, beg to be taken 'home', pine for mothers and husbands and mistresses from another life, and know things that there seems to be no normal way for them to know. From the moment these children can talk, they speak of people and events from the past - not vague stories of centuries ago, but details of specific, identifiable individuals who may have died just months before the birth of the child in question.

For thirty-seven years, Dr. Ian Stevenson {see yesterday's blog} has traveled the world from Lebanon to suburban Virginia investigating and documenting more than two thousand of these past life memory cases. Now, his essentially unknown work is being brought to the mainstream by Tom Shroder, the first journalist to have the privilege of accompanying Dr. Stevenson in his fieldwork.

Shroder follows Stevenson into the lives of children and families touched by this phenomenon, changing from skeptic to believer as he comes face-to-face with concrete evidence he cannot discount in this spellbinding and true story."

I'm reading at the moment the story of Suzanne Ghanem. There's a family photo of her strange habit as a baby of holding a telephone receiver to her ear.

Suzanne's parents say that from the time she could utter her first words, she would pick up the phone and urgently call into it the name "Leila".

When she grew old enough to speak, Suzanne spoke of remembering the life of Hanan Mansour, a woman who died after heart surgery in a Virginia hospital.

Leila turned out to be the name of Hanan Mansour's daughter. Family members say that the woman had tried and failed to reach Leila by phone shortly before entering surgery for unsuccessful heart surgery, and her death.

ISKCON Melbourne : Farm Plots Ready for Sale

After quite a few years of preparation we are now able to release two plots of land for sale at New Nandagram. These are freehold plots each with their own titles .66 of a hectare in size, 60 metres wide by 110 metres long. They are situated on Seaches Outlet Track, the road you enter our property from off the main road between Winchelsea and Deans Marsh.

Each has electricity installed and an entrance which has just been completed; see the pictures below. These were taken with Manigriva's mobile so they aren't the highest quality. The next job is to fence the area off but for all intents and purposes we are now ready for sale.

If you know someone who might be interested suggest they contact me for details.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : New Vrindaban Will Be Tropical

It is funny that whenever there is a cold spell someone makes jokes about “What happened to global warming?”

While it is true that for us February was the fourth coldest one on record, a broader view is more informative:

2006 WARMEST EVER? JANUARY 9, 2007:

http://www.wtov9.com/weather/10971838/detail.html

“According to a computer calculation by the National Climatic Center that was obtained by USA TODAY, the year 2006 was the warmest on record for the United States. But some of the scientists say a second calculation with newer software will show it was not the warmest.

The warmest year on record was 1998 with a United States average temperature of 54.94 degrees Fahrenheit. The original calculation of 2006 came up with an average temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Either way, 2006 was yet another year at or near the top of the list of warmest years. Fifteen of the years since 1981 rank in the top 25 warmest since national recordkeeping began in 1895. According to preliminary data the year 2006 was the sixth warmest globally. The year 2005 was the warmest on record worldwide…”

When Srila Prabhupada said in the 70s that some day New Vrindaban would be tropical, it sounded pretty farfetched. At this point, it starts to sound prophetic.

So if NV will be tropical, what will the current tropics be like? The word “unlivable” comes to mind.

When I moved here in the early seventies, I had come to the conclusion that a great shift in the weather was coming. One reason I choose NV is that it is situated so that if the climate grew colder, I was already used to North Dakota winters so I knew I could survive, and if it got warmer, West Virginia had a cushion so it would only get tropical.

Now it seems that Al Gore and the scientific evidence are supporting SP’s prophecy. The only question seemingly to remain is will it happen in my lifetime. While SP’s credibility is not based on his prophetical abilities, it certainly doesn’t hurt to take them into consideration when making long term decisions that have no clear indications to do otherwise.

Vyenkata Bhatta dasa : Our Aspiration: a blade of grass

What is envy? Envy means, "I want to be seen as important and great and if anyone is a threat to my own egoistic idea, then there is negativity towards that person, perhaps in my thoughts, in my words, in my actions." But if devotees put as their goal -- as their aspiration -- humility, then there is no question of envy. Therefore the cardinal principle of Sri Caitanya's teachings is this verse from the Siksastaka:

trnad api sunicena, taror iva sahisnuna
amanina manadena kirtaniya sada harih

This is our aspiration. We cannot enter into the higher realms of consciousness, until we develop this as our consciousness, of striving as the goal of our life, to be more humble than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, to be ready to offer all respect to others, to expect no respect for oneself and in this way with a clean and sincere heart, to chant the name of Krishna constantly. This is our aspiration. Not to be a sannyasi, not to be a leader, not to be famous, not to be married in a wealthy family, not to be a president or a GBC or a sankirtan leader. These are all services, necessary services, which we should accept simply to assist our Guru's mission. But it is not our aspiration.

Our aspiration is to be more humble than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, to offer all respect to others and expect none in return and in this way to chant the name of the Lord constantly. And whatever our service may be, we should humbly execute our service, with this goal as our ambition in life. And if all of us, whether we are pujaris or cooks or whether we are sankirtan devotees or whether we are grihastas living outside having gainfully employed services to society and coming and chanting and making our families Krishna conscious, whatever our function may be, if we all unite under this aspiration of trnad api sunicena, there will be no envy. There will be sincere unity and then great progress can be made individually and collectively. And all sincere and innocent people of the world will be attracted to the atmosphere, where devotees are humbly coming together to chant the holy names of Krishna.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

It is our great service to the Vaisnavas, by our example, by our words, to encourage and enthuse devotees in this direction.

~ His Holiness Radhanath Swami
