Japa Group : Additional Meditations

Jaya Sri Radhe!

The main thing is to hear the Holy Name, but small additional meditations
are not forbidden.

Physically one may be chanting alone in one´s apartment, but in your mind
you can always go to your favorite holy place, to a samadhi of Srila
Prabhupada in Vrndavana, Sri Dhama Mayapura or whatever you like.

Before chanting one should pray to one´s Spiritual Master and to the previous
Acaryas. Even whilst chanting...one can meditate that you are chanting in
association with Sri Guru, the Founder-Acarya or Srila Haridasa Thakura.

In the Yoga-sutras, Patanjali Muni says that one can control the thought
waves (Vrttis) by fixing one´s mind on one who has transcended human
passions and attachments.

"One gets one-hundredth portion of the the religious merit (punya-phala) of another person by thinking of him."
Padma-Purana, Uttara Khanda.112.9-29

Japa Group : Reflecting on Offenses

I was reflecting on the 11 offences after talking with a devotee on the phone tonight.
The 11th offense we recite in the Temple morning program "inattention whilst chanting" is considered to be the root cause of all the other offenses.
This is something I have tended to overlook but is nevertheless crucial for quality Japa.

I have done some experimenting with this - I tried reading the mantra whilst I was chanting and noticed the difference when I stopped reading (the mind became unfocused and started wandering).

I am sure there are other devotees with similar experiences and ways of dealing with inattention. I know one devotee who, if he thought he was being inattentive, would stop chanting - play a kirtan - then continue chanting.

Book Distribution News : working hard to push on this movement

even more important than the knowledge of Krishna is the acting upon that knowledge, or devotional service. By the acting he realizes his knowledge and becomes complete. So I am very much encouraged that all you young boys and girls are working so hard to please Krishna, and even I cannot give you any nice thing, still, because you have got some love for Krishna and your Spiritual Master, therefore you have given up everything for selling books door-to-door and working very hard in every way just to push on this movement. For your sincere helping me I thank you all very very much.

On his way across the country. If you happened upon a robed man strolling down the side of the road somewhere in the Townships last week, you likely saw a monk on a mission. Bhaktimarga Swami is in the midst of his third walking trip across Canada; this journey, called Canwalk, is to be completed over two summers.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : The Resurgency

1968 September 4 : “It is not very difficult to open a center. You can remain in any apartment as husband and wife, and invite persons there to hear your chanting and topics, that is our center, and let it be gradually improved.”
Prabhupada Letters :: 1968

Currently , ISKCON is in a holding pattern in the West, eking out an existence dependent on support from Hindus. There is nothing wrong with that; it is essential and serves a purpose. Still, it is a rear guard action. With scattered exceptions, preaching to Westerners is in decline and in many temples western brahmacaries no longer even exist.

Eastern Europe is often cited as a bright spot. I don’t doubt it is. Still, if they don’t learn from the mistakes made in America, they are simply in the part of the cycle the US was in 20 years ago, and many of the same problems will eventually rear their heads.

India seems to be thriving, and that is fine, but it wasn’t Srila Bhaktisiddhanta’s mandate to his disciple to preach in India — it was to preach to Westerners. Much of the success in India is directly attributable to Westerners going back to India and openly embracing spiritual and religious aspects that are also common to Hinduism. What happens when that reverse flow dries up?

I think there is some reason for optimism for the future of ISKCON now, but I think it will not be a opulent Deity worship centric future. I think it will take the form of a Resurgence, going back to basics.

Resurgents will be decentralized, independent, light on assets, based in RVs or rental housing. No heavy overhead or labor demands for opulent Deity worship. They will make pilgrimages to existing temples, and encourage others to do so, but not try to emulate them.

Rent an apartment, get a few cases of books from the BBT, and set up a picture of the Pancatattva and they are operational. A set of kartals or a mrdunga and and it’s off to the park or campus for sankirtan and leaflets inviting interested parties back for an informal evening of chanting and sharing prasadam.

Who will your typical resurgent be? Not whom you might expect. When Srila Prabhupada came there was him, representing the oldest generation, then a huge gap to a bunch of newly minted adults. When he left, there was a vacuum.

Jung once said that some problems are never solved, you simply outgrow them. Instead of two generations of adults, the oldest and the productive stages, raising one generation of kids, ISKCON had only one, focused on production. Now, thirty years later, you are beginning to see the oldest generation, the elders, once again starting to be represented in ISKCON.

The leading edge are in their sixties, but most are in their 50s, still working but starting to get their homes paid off and their kids through college. When they reach retirement age, and start receiving some passive income in the form of Social Security, pensions, or equity conversion, they will start looking around and want something to do.

They will be able to afford to take up the preaching lifestyle. Some will become more active in the existing school temples, but I predict that many of them will use their independence to adopt the tactics of the Resurgency — rent, few cases of books, a picture of Panchatattva and a lot of face to face time.

Some may do it directly, some may subsidize some young devotees and give them logistical support and let them do the hands on.

The Resurgency looms.

ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia : Srimati Radharani’s Appearance Day

Radharani’s Lotus Feet, ISKCON Bangalore

Sep 20, KUALA LUMPUR (THU) — A Radhastami day lecture by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prahbupada, September 18, 1969, London.

Srila Prabhupada: (chants mangalacarana prayers) Today is birth, appearance day of Srimati Radharani, Radhastami. Fifteen days after Krsna’s birth, Radharani appeared. (pause) Radharani is Krsna’s pleasure potency. Radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini-saktih. The Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, has got varieties of energies, as it is confirmed in the Vedic literature. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. The Supreme Lord has nothing to do personally. Na tasya karyam. He has nothing to do. Just like here in this material world we find some very big man, political head or business head; personally, he has nothing to do. Because he has got so many assistants, secretaries, that personally he hasn’t got to do anything. Similarly, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, full with six opulences, why He will have to do something? No. He has got many assistants. Sarvatah pani-padas tat. Gauranga Kishore das - USA : Reflections from Italy

At a disciples meeeting in Alachua, someone asked Maharaj how to develop a relationship with him in the absence of physical association. Maharaj of course anwered the question very nicely and then he asked Mother Mahavisnu Priya to speak. She spoke very beautifully and then she said something which was one of those things that was so startling that it stays with you. She expained to us that after Prabhupada left the planet physically she felt it was easier to connect with him.

As Maharaj said last night, “The spiritual world would be a boring place if it was not filled with unlimited contradictions.”

In the physical presence of the guru there is a tendency to confuse personal association or attention with love. The love of the pure devotee is that they are our eternal well wisher, nothing can ever change that fact, that is eteranlly true in their physical presence or in the absence of their physical association.

Physical association is quite rare, when we do have it, it is short lived and it can never really satisfy because the soul has the desire to be eternally connected with Krishna and all of the eternal associates. To experience that true satisfaction that we are all hankering for we must connect on the deepest level through constant absorption in Krishna consciousness.

Yamuna Devi has been trying to teach me this since we met. Because it is always so wonderful to be with her and the times I have shared in her association are some of my most memorable experiences, but we inevitable always have to part after what seems like a very brief time and I never know when if ever I we will meet again on the physical level.

When I found out that I was going to be going to Govardhan I wrote to Yamuna Prabhu to seek her blessing and I also expressed some sadness that will not see her this year and most probably not in nxt few years, and of course that means that we may not meet again at in this physical realm. She replied, “Physical company is not so important. When we do the same activities, we are packed up together, making progress to return Back to Godhead.” She has given me similar instructions many times.

When I was last there she told us a story about he relationship with Srila Prabhupada. She explained that one time in India, during the Kumbh Mela, Srila Prabhupada was giving a series of lectures on the Ajamila story, and at this point no one had ever heard this section of Bhagavatam yet.

She was sitting next to Prabhupada listening very attentively. Then one sanyasis told her to sit at the back of the pandal with all the other ladies (guests). She was very sad because she understood that things were changing in ISKCON and she would no longer have the same physically close relationship with Srila Prabhupada that she cherished so much.

After a few days of listening from the back of the audience Srila Prabhupada asked her, “You don't like to hear me anymore?” This ofcourse broke her heart. She explained to Srila Prabhupada that she loved to hear from him but was told by one of his sanyasis disciples to sit in the back.

It was a sad moment for both of them because they both knew that things were changing and they sad that they would not relish each other company.

Then she asked Srila Prabhupada, “How much association did you have with your guru maharaj?”
“There was never a moment that we were apart.”
“But how much physical association did you have?”
“Not very much. There were some disciples who had a lot of physical association but they were like mosquitos in the lap of the king.”

Lately I've been feeling like a mosquito in the lap of the king.

Maharaj's personal association is something that I have not had much of over the past three years. This year has really been the exception. One naturally always wants to feel close to the spiritual master but after getting so much association this year I am more convinced than ever that the only meaningful connection is through service. So I guess this trip has been very good in that it seems to be a final preparation to begin my studies in Govardhana.

I know that if I just take shelter of Govardhana he will fulfill all my hearts innermost desires.

As far as the details of Maharaj's visit here I think I'm too far behind to catch up, Radhastami was beautiful, Maharaj's Radhastami lecture was incredible, Shri Shri Radha Vraja Sundar are gorgeous, Villa Vrindavan is amazing, so many sweet devotees from all over Italy and Europe (Germany, Romania, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia), what more can I say, everyday I've gotten to play mrdanga for Maharaj which is one of my favorite services, and I've also had a few personal exchanges with Maharaj which are always sweet, but now I feel more ready than ever to go to Govardhan.

Gopala Guru dasa : New Plymouth

Mum was pretty stoked to see us, we hadn't seen her since last October.  One of the first things she did was give me a job to do around the house (this delegation gene is quite prominent in our family).  She wanted me to remove her old wall unit and install her new LCD tv.

I haven't watched tv for over 7 years now, only small bits and pieces whenever I visit the family.  So when I was tuning in the tv I got exposed to what is now on the tube, the same thing as what I used to watch 7 years ago - rubbish.  Although there seems to be a big thing now on reality tv, people with absolutley no shame just letting people see how they live their lives.  There was one show of a 37 year old women trying to find a husband Thinking, another one of a 40 year old women having $300,000 of plastic surgerySick and another one of a man who eats 8 bags of salt and viniger chips a day and pizza as a stable dietConfused.  Now I mean EVERYDAY.  He could not even bear eating a single strawberry or any other fruit.  This world is becoming more warped every day.

My mum still likes refering to us as 'the kids'.  Even though I am 28 years old, fully independent and married I am still a 'kid'.  So being a kid I took my mum shopping for my birthday and got her to pay for it Open-mouthed, and she loved it of course.  My wardrobe consisted mainly of Hari clothing so I needed more civi's (civilian clothing).  After my mum bought the clothing she asked whether or not I liked my birthday card, joking because she didn't get me one.  I told her "It was great, I used it to buy a new wardrobe", refering to her credit card that we used to buy the clothes with - she admited defeat with that call.

After 3 days in New Plymouth we then drove down to our final port of call, Wellington.

ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia : Balarama’s Pastimes with the Demons

Krsna and Balarama Fighting Demons

Lila pastimes with the transcendental demons.

“So here Krsna Caitanya and Nityananda, Their identification is Lord Krsna and Balarama. Now, in the Krsna incarnation, these two brothers were engaged as cowherd boys and friends of the gopis, sons of mother Yasoda and Nanda Maharaja. That is actual life in Vrndavana. Krsna and Balarama, They are village cowherds boy. That is the early age history of Krsna-Balarama. And Their another business, when They went to Mathura They killed Kamsa and the wrestlers, and then again, when They went to Dvaraka, They had to fight with so many demons. But Their childhood life, up to sixteenth year, They were in Vrndavana, happy life, simply love. That is paritranaya sadhunam.

Sadhus, devotees, they are always anxious to see Krsna, Balarama and Their associates. They are always very much aggrieved on account of separation. To give them rejuvenation of life, Krsna-Balarama play Their childhood days in Vrndavana. And out of Vrndavana, beginning from Mathura up to Dvaraka and other places, the business was vinasaya ca duskrtam: killing. So They have got two businesses, one for pacifying the devotees, and the other is to kill the demons. Of course, Krsna and Balarama, They are Absolute Truth. There is no difference between killing and loving. They… Absolute. Those who were killed, you know, they were also delivered from this material bondage.” (Srila Prabhupada Lecture on Caitanya-caritamrta, 03-26-75, Mayapur)

Kurma dasa : Who is that Girl with Krishna?

Today is the birthday of Sri Radha, the Girl you always see accompanying Krishna. She is the tender-hearted female counterpart of the Divine, and today we will be fasting until noon, supplicating her blessings, then partaking of a sumptuous feast offered in her honour.

sri radha:

Over five millenia ago in a place now called Northern India on a half moon night in the month of Bhadra, King Vrishabhanu came to the Jamuna to bathe and found himself engulfed in a golden aura that was emanating from a lotus, which had a baby girl standing on its whorl. When the king returned to the palace with the baby, Queen Kirtida was delighted. But, she was also shocked to find that the girl was blind.

Lord Krishna's mother Yashoda heard that her best friend Kirtida had a baby, so she came to visit along with her husband and her son. Krishna crawled up to the cradle and pulled Himself up and looked in. At that moment, Srimati Radharani's eyes fluttered and opened wide and blossomed like lotuses. It seems that she did not want to see anything of this world, only the form of Sri Krishna. Everyone was delighted.

Srimati Radharani is the mother of the universe. The spiritual mother of all souls. And the concept of mother is the most sacred symbol - that of purity, selflessness, caring, sharing, nurturing, and love. When the Holy Names are chanted:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

Hare means Radharani. It is a plaintive desperate cry for the mother. 'Radharani! Please wake us up from this nightmare of mortal life! Remind us of the father we have forgotten and take us home!'"

In the Krishna consciousness movement, devotees carefully worship Srimati Radharani as the bestower of devotional service to Krishna, by attentively chanting her names in the Maha-mantra, by worshiping her Deity form, and by following her instructions.

The Inner Meaning of Ratha-yatra
(ref “Hidden Glories Of India” book, BBT Publications)

Although Lord Krishna became a great king in His time, His childhood He spent in the village of Vrindavan. There He sported with the cowherd boys and girls, and of all of them, Radharani was His most beloved. When Lord Krishna left Vrindavan to become king of Dvarka, however, Shrimati Radharani's lamentation was unequalled in the universe. She never gave up hope that He would someday return to Her. In this way She enjoys a special transcendental long known as vipralambha-bhava, or "the mood of love-in-separation".

Once when Lord Krishna was king, He met Radharani and Her friends in a secluded place at Kurukshetra. But when Radharani saw Krishna in His princely grad, with full opulence and regalia, She longed to see Him as the simple cowherd boy She once knew. She longed to bring Him back to Vrindavan.

The mood of wanting to bring Lord Krishna back to the intimacy of Vrindavan is the confidential theme of the Ratha-yatra festival. When devotees pull the long, sturdy ropes of the Ratha-yatra cart they are pulling Krishna back into their hearts - back to the land of Vrindavan. Radha and Krishna incarnated as Caitanya Mahäprabhu, and in this way, They were reunited - in His body. Yet during His last years, which He spent in Jagannath Puri, Lord Chaitanya fully manifested the mood of Radharani and relentlessly lamented the divine tragedy of Radha and Krishna's separation.
Every year in Jagannath Puri, Lord Caitanya celebrated the Ratha-yatra festival in Radharani's mood of pulling Krishna back to the simple, villagelike atmosphere of Vrindavan. Mahäprabhu taught that this feeling of separation actually evokes the presence of Krishna and, ultimately, gives way to the highest happiness. This is the internal meaning of Ratha-yatra.

Mukunda Charan das, SA : Radhastami 2007

Inis Ratha, Ireland, Radhastami Celebration

Sri Rupa prabhu requested I give Bhagavatam class this morning.  I really wanted to hear from him.  After all, that is why I came to Inis Ratha - for Vaishnava association.  Sri Rupa prabhu, however, got his way.  Dear friends and readers, please accept this imperfect summary of my presentation from this morning.

I introduced the class by describing Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s beautiful song Radha Madhava.  Srila Prabhupada told Mother Yamuna and his early disciples at the Akash Ganga building in Mumbai that this song is so powerful, it is just like a bolt of lightning in the dark.  It has the power to destroy the darkness within the heart.  Krsna surya-sama maya hy andhakara/ yahan krsna tahan nahi mayadhikara.  Krishna is like the sun.  Maya is like the darkness.  Where there is Krisha there can be no jurisdiction of Maya.  Where there is sunlight there can be no darkness.

I briefly described how this prayer is just four lines and 18 words, yet it sums up the entire Spiritual World.  Krishna is Madhava, the lover of the Goddess of Fortune.  Krishna is the lover of Radha.  I embellished my explanation of this song a little.  I mentioned how Bhaktivinoda Thakur is describing Goloka Vrindavan and the love of the residents of Vrindavan for Krishna and vice-versa here.

We then spoke on Dadhici Muni and how he gave up his body in charity so that Indra could vanquish Vrtrasura (Srimad Bhagavatam 6.10.10).  This body can be destroyed at any moment.  Why not give it up for a noble cause?  In his purport, Prabhupada calls this para-upakara or ’helping others.’  The main point of Prabhupada’s purport is that the best use of our resources, including our own body, is for the welfare of others.

What are real welfare activities?  These are beneficial activities executed in relation to Krishna.  I cited Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu as prime example of this, since he is the inaugurator of the Sankirtan Movement.  When Lord Caitanya was a little baby He would cry and cry and cry.  The women of Navadvipa would try to pacify child Nimai in so many different ways.  When they chanted, ‘Haribol! Haribol’, He stopped crying.  Little Nimai offered the townsfolk sandesh (milk sweets) if they chanted Hare Krishna.  The Lord was playing out His pastime of being a perfect devotee.  The symptom of a first-class devotee is that anyone who sees Him chants the Holy Names.

This is the Sankirtan Movement of Lord Caitanya.  The heart is compared to a mirror.  Ceto-darpanam-marjanam.  In Lord Caitanya’s Siksastakam prayers He says that the mirror of the heart has been covered by ‘dust’ for so many lifetimes.  The chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord, however, cleanses the heart of the dust.  You cannot see your reflection in a dusty mirror.  When the mirror is clean, however, you can see your reflection clearly.  When the heart is cleansed of the dust of material desires, we can understand our true identity as eternal servant of Krishna.  We will also be able to see Krishna within our heart.

The Caitanya Caritamrta explains how Srimati Radharani’s heart is like a mirror, darpana, that perfectly reflects Her love for Lord Krishna.  She is the Queen of devotion, Radhika-rani.  She epitomizes and personifies love of Krishna to the highest degree.  When Lord Krishna sees His own reflection in a pillar in Dwaraka, He sees what Srimati Radharani sees in Her heart.  He wonders to Himself, ‘Who is that beautiful person?’  Then He realizes it is Himself!  Krishna is bewildered by His own beauty.  Krishna appears as Caitanya Mahaprabhu, therefore, to understand what it is like to love Him and to feel the happiness on tasting the sweetness that love.  Sri krishna-caitanya radha-krishna nahi anya.  Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is none other than Radha and Krishna.  Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna with the sentiment (bhava) and complexion (dyuti) of Srimati Radharani.  Radha-bhava-dyuti-suvalitam naumi krsna-svarupam.  Mahaprabhu is also called Gauranga or ‘golden-limbed.’  Srimati Radharani is Gaurangi.  She is golden in complexion.  These are the confidential reasons for Mahaprabhu’s appearance.  And the rest of the Caitanya Caritamrta illustrates these reasons through the life of Lord Caitanya.  Careful study, therefore, of the Caitanya Caritamrita will certainly help us to understand Srimati Radharani.

I went on to describe a little more about Srimati Radharani being the personification of love of Godhead.  I also described how the prayers that we chant during the morning programme are describing the spiritual master’s intimate service to the Divine Couple, tulasi prayers are prayers in the mood of being a maidservant of Srimati Radharani and I explained how the mangalacharan prayers are also invoking Sri Radha’s mercy through disciplic succession.  The devotees appreciated these points.  We may not have realized these yet, but through continual practice of vaidhi-sadhana-bhakti the meanings of these exalted prayers will be revealed to us.  Then, of course, there is the chanting of the maha-mantra.  This is the essence of our all our sadhana.  It is the means and the end.  Pure love of Krishna is within the heart.  We simply have to awaken it through the process of hearing and chanting.  Nitya-siddha krishna-prema sadhya kabhu naya/ sravanadi suddhe-citte karaye udhaya.  By chanting Hare Krishna we are, in fact, calling out to Radharani - O Divine Mother!  O energy of the Lord!  Please engage me in the service of Krishna!  Radharani comes first.  As Caitanya Mahaprabhu prayed - gopi bhartur padakamalayor daser-das-anudasa.  I am the servant of the servant of the servant of Lotus-eyed Krishna one hundred times removed.

I finished my presentation by reading from Prabhupada’s purport once again, stressing the futility of living in the material body.  We should live for others.  How do we do this?  Prabhupada describes the preacher in the following way.  He has love for God.  He has love for the devotees.  He is compassionate to the innocent (ie. those who are favourable).  And he avoids the envious or atheistic.  This is basically a description of a madhyama-adhikari or second-class devotee.  When we examine the symptoms of such a devotee, we can see that it is something quite exalted.  We should aspire for this.  We should help others.  In order to do so, however, we have to help ourselves.  We have to develop a taste for hearing and chanting.  How do we develop taste?  By following the programme set for us by Srila Prabhupada in association with his devotees.

Srila Prabhupada ki jaya!!  Srimati Radharani ki jaya!!

David Haslam, UK : Humble correction

May I humble make a correction or clarification on my entery in August with regards Brighton.

Their has been some confusion and it has been anounced on several occasions that their is a new Temple in Brighton, although their is a plan to convert the basement area into a temple (this being planned for mid 2008) it is infact working as an Ashram for the moment.

We would like as many devotees to come and support the development of the premises in Brighton, and if you wish to attend a program then it is highly recomended that you come on a Friday night.

Most of the devotees are young but enthusiastic and so their is a training program going on for them at the moment so the programs remain flexible at the moment, these things afterall take time.

They have also been encouraged bu the many senior devotees who have lent their support. Also of the offers to help convert the basement and the loft area (which is hopefully going to be guest rooms).

Again I humbley appologise if my earler posting made it appear that their is already a Temple but again request that if any devotees are able to give a hand or support then this would be very much appreciated.

I am myself humbled that I have been asked to give my support and to the welcome given.

Kripamoya dasa : Vaishnavas in Venice

I haven’t written this journal for two weeks now due to being very busy with organisation and travelling. From the 9th-14th I was in Venice, Italy for our European Leaders Meeting and my preparation for that took three days. I was finishing a detailed agenda for the conference; arranging slide shows and evening presentations. Around 45 delegates were coming from all over the EU and I wanted to make their four days in Italy lively and rewarding.

So the Vaishnavas travelled from our communities in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, England and Italy. Our venue was the impressive former monastery on a hill in Vicenza, an hours drive from Venice. Surrounded by vineyards and bathed in the late summer sun, it was an excellent place to hold a thoughtful series of discussions. Last year we were here also.

The local devotees provided great hospitality. Prasadam was delicious Italian cooking served with enthusiasm and affection. Accommodation was very quiet and comfortable, with plenty of space to walk and some striking views.

Our first day focused on educational needs in ISKCON. We reviewed what educational materials we needed to help someone coming to Krishna consciousness right through to higher studies, and whether our philosophy was adequately represented in all the major languages of Europe. Apparently ISKCON’s books in Icelandic are a rather good read.

A self-assessment form for our own ongoing education was the subject of some minutes of quiet contemplation. The afternoon session included time for the issue of succession; identifying future leaders and arranging for their training.

The second day was designated as ‘Social Development day.’ The international GBC body has created several committees for year-round discussion of important issues. We were taking some themes from these to push forward the dialogue. Hence our first day’s focus on education. The GBC Constitutional Committee has raised some questions concerning membership rights and responsibilities and so our discussion was on certain aspects of this broad subject.

As I was chairman I offered an introduction to the subject of social development within ISKCON and showed a powerpoint to the members. There ensued a discussion on the different lifestyles and categories of membership which comprise today’s ISKCON. Later on, we talked of the need for temples and restaurants to support production on the movement’s 14 farms in Europe through purchase of produce.

Our third day began with all the good news from around the EU. And there was lots of it. I had asked everyone to forward some digital photos of their news and to bring posters and publications; it made a great display and an inspiring slide show. Paris, France was specially noted for the new house due to be converted for use as a temple by next Spring. Situated just fifteen minutes from the city centre, it represents a great turnaround for our movement in the region. Greece was also worthy of applause; after so many years of opposition by the Greek Orthodox Church, and due to new EU laws, we are finally allowed to register ourselves there as a ‘house of prayer.’

A presentation on the state of our farming communities within the EU made for sobering listening. Although Srila Prabhupada wanted the temples to all buy produce from our own farms, the heavy subsidy of farming in Europe means that most Vaishnavas can, and do, buy vegetables and milk from other sources at a fraction of the cost.

Germany’s slow recovery from recent misfortunes and their plans for gradual revival were presented. The assembled devotees applauded the German devotees for their determination.

Our fourth day was solely devoted to ‘Sadhu Sangha’ which in our case meant a trip to Venice for the perfect Harinam Sankirtan. Chanting with 70 Vaishnavas in the sunshine, through mediaeval city streets, great acoustics, no traffic, surrounded by water, fresh breezes, and eager tourists to listen, clap and sing and dance along with us made Venice into Kirtan Heaven. And the sense of being in heaven continued as we came back to Vicenza for home-made Italian ice cream in a variety of unusual flavours.

You can catch a flavour of what it was like by going to:

http://www.prabhupada.org/jaya/index.php?s=venice

although this is an evening event during the Venice Carnival.

I returned home to more meetings at the weekend. Our Congregational Council met on Sunday morning, and our Travelling Preachers gathered in the afternoon.

Today, of course, has been a wonderful celebration of Radhastami, the Appearance Day of Srimati Radharani. I gave class on the webcam to around 25 devotees and then attended an excellent class at the Bhaktivedanta Manor given by Gauri Das. The abhisheka, the ceremonial bathing of the Deities, was very special. I felt privileged to be able to offer the first oil, sandalwood paste, and sesame seed paste before pouring the first conch-shell of milk for Radha and Krishna. The kirtan and bathing went on for almost two hours.

And that, dear readers, brings you up to date.

Dear Devotees of New Vrindaban,

PAMHO. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada! Happy Radhastami! Recently there have been a few changes with the Radharani Club and the sewing department. Since, Mother Kunjabiharini left, the Radharani Club purchased the new Radhastami outfit from the taylors in Vrindaban. We are eagerly awaiting their arrival, and praying they reach us today.

Although, we were not able to sew the outfits ourselves, they are still a sincere offering of love to Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha Vrindaban Chandra. I will be away for a few weeks, but am extending a sincere thank you to all devotees who have helped make Radharani Club possible, and will be sending out a more formal thank you letter upon my return.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Laddhu Katha

I write the following assuming you have read:

The Prasadam Addict Section 3

To put this into perspective — there used to be a large dichotomy between the regular prasadam and the maha. Anymore, they are almost the same, but in the old days, the regular prasadam was much more austere than it is today and the maha was much better than it is today.

Without that background, this story is harder to relate to. The laddhus they make anymore, while using the same ingredients, aren’t the same. The texture is off — now they are soft, whereas they used to be hard. Now it is the sugar and butter that predominates the taste, but when the chickpea flour is roasted correctly, it is the dominant flavor.

When Amburish used to make the sweet rice, besides the better quality of the milk he used, he would put it on a slow flame and simmer it all night, from after evening milking until japa period, which started at 3:00 AM. It was almost like condensed milk, and spiced to perfection. No one takes the time to do that anymore, except Sudhanu, a few times a year.

I suspect many devotees have never even tasted proper laddhus and sweet rice, so Taru’s enthusiasm may be a little opaque to them.

I have a Taru and laddhus memory.

I was sound asleep, and suddenly there was Taru shaking me awake with an insistence that was impossible to ignore. I had slept in and it must have already been after 3:00 AM because I could hear japa being chanted in the prasadam room.

I was living in a shed at Bahulaban next to the building that housed the marble factory, kitchen, and showers on the ground floor, and the new prasadam room on the second. Because it was Janmastami, a set of Deities had been moved up to the prasadam room and mangala arotik was going to be held there as a huge influx of devotees had arrived and the temple room was too small to accommodate them.

“I have laddhus,” Taru said, and displayed a large stainless steel bowl full of them.

“But it’s Janmastami, we are supposed to fast until midnight,” I protested.

“The new day doesn’t start until mangala arotik — it isn’t Janmastami yet.”

What could I do? He led kirtans, he gave Srimad Bhagvatam classes — he was my senior godbrother. I really had no option except to surrender. We gobbled laddhus until the first strains of “samsara davanala lidha loka” floated through the air and, being the strict devotees we were, we immediately started fasting, even though we hadn’t emptied the bowl.

Namahatta.org : Prisoners and Jailers Dance Together

deena bandhu

Every year for Janmastami we have a big program in Agra Central Jail with very enthusiastic participation from the prisoners who make Krishna Lila dioramas. Unfortunately this year there was civil unrest in Agra do to rioting by a certain community and there was curfew. But several days later after things were peaceful, the superintendent of the Jail invited us for doing a wonderful program.

So on 12th September, the devotees headed by Jankinatha Prabhu, our Prison Preaching in charge, went to Agra Central Jail. His Holiness Radha Govinda Maharaja was the guest of honor accompanied by His Holiness Radharaman Maharaja and our Vrindavan co-President, Srestha Prabhu. Somehow Jankinatha also convinced Aindra Prabhu and his kirtana party to come, although he hardly goes anywhere outside of Braja.

David Haslam, UK : Respose to Jessica

This is following a posting on my blog which went as follows:

I can so relate to you. No, I was not sexually molested as a child, but emotionally, mentally, and physically abused. In all actuality… I guess in a sense I was sexually abused, too. Just not as bad as you. I’m 25, engaged and a mother and I still have so many questions as to why this happened to me. They say God sets tha path, but you have to choose to take the right one. What kind of choice is that for a child? It’s not. We are not capable of making the right decisions, we are only children… I believe in God, don’t get me wrong, but I wish someone could explain to me… Why these types of things happen to so many of us… and How can we stop it from affecting our adult lives and our parenting? I am a very good mother, as I’m told all the time, but I know in my heart … I could be better. I am so “ready to get mad and always taking it out on my loved ones” about the most simple things that occur in my life. And because of that, I fear I will lose everything and everyone I love so much. Not by harming them, physically, but by my misery, depression, and always thinking of the past, all that stuff that goes through my mind every day… I don’t know why, but I just felt I should write you this… God Bless… and Feel free to contact me… - Jessica
I have sent an e-mail as follows:

Hi Jessica

Many thanks for taking the time to read and make a comment on my blog and most important of all for your honesty (it is a rare thing).

Firstly emotional abuse is recognized and is catogarized as bad if not worse than sexual abuse mainly becouse the emotional scares are deep and are less easy to express.

Secondly dispite what the press sometimes says that the abuser goes onto abues this is not actually true infact the instance of someone who has been abused going onto abuse is low and statistically very rare. And I am sure your friends are right that you are infact a very good mother.

Within the Gita it is explained that we are in the age known as Kali-yuga—the “Age of Quarrel and Hypocrisy” so that fact we have falling’s out should not be too much of a surprise. Although our childhood experience’s shape the way we act and are as adults we need to distinguish between that and what is experienced in all relationships and how much we are willing to compromise. Although I gather from your postings in myspace that you are doing well and have a loving partner and friends and I am sure they benefit as much from you as you do from them.

As to why we have such childhood experiences this question is very complicated but is again explained in both the Gita and Bhagavatam in relation to Karma and the complexaties realted to how Karma affects our lives. Needless to say we can reduce our Karma in this life, and if the notion of reincarnation is acceptable to you then we can make our next life much better. This has helped me deal with many of the emotional problems and for those who have known me for many years has given me a stability that has made me more rational and a better person to be around.

Most important is the chanting of Gods Name, as a child calls to his mother for comfort from distress we too can cry out to god. This is very simple and is made up of three words Hare, Krsna, Rama and is a sixteen-word prayer, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare.

Hare is the personal form of God’s own happiness, His eternal consort, Srimaté Rädhäräni. Krsna, “the all-attractive one,” and Räma, “the all-pleasing one,” are names of God. The Vedas recommend the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra as the easiest and most sublime method of awakening one’s dormant love of God; the great chant for deliverance. These names have been particularly recommended for chanting in this age.

This I have found has given me great comfort and understanding and I would also recomend if you are wanting to understand why thing happen to us which seems unjust or plain wrong the “Gita as it is” written by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada

Happy Sri Radhastami!…the perfect day to finish Nava Vraja Mandala Parikrama, arriving in Vrindavan Forest…

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : Radhastami Lecture by Srila Prabhupada

Now today is our Radhastami ceremony. I must speak now something about Radharani, and then I shall go up, reach my apartment at twelve. In the meantime, you can observe the ceremonies. So, so far Radharani, Radharani, today is the birthday of Srimati Radharani. Radharani is the pleasure potency of Krishna. Krishna is the Supreme Brahman. Just try to understand. Krishna is the Supreme Brahman. Param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. So when param brahma wants to enjoy... That enjoying spirit is there in the param brahma. Otherwise we cannot have this enjoying spirit. Because we are part and parcel, therefore we have got that enjoying spirit; but that is materially contaminated. But the fact is there, because Krishna, He is enjoying, this enjoying spirit we have got also, but I do not know how to enjoy. We are trying to enjoy in the matter, in the dull matter. That is spiritual. So brahman, brahman sukhanubhutya. People are trying to feel what is brahma-sukha, pleasure of brahmanubhava. That is not material pleasure. So many yogis, they have given up their family life, their kingdom, and meditating to achieve that Brahman pleasure. Actually, the idea is Brahman pleasure. So many brahmacaris, so many sannyasis, they are trying to achieve that Brahman pleasure, and in order to achieve that Brahman pleasure they are neglecting, they are kicking off all this material pleasure. Do you think that Brahman pleasure is ordinary, this material pleasure? To achieve a portion of Brahman pleasure, if they are kicking off all this material pleasure... Don't talk of ourselves. We are ordinary men. In the history we have got instances, that of Bharata Maharaja. Bharata Maharaja, under whose name this planet is called Bharatavarsa. That Bharata Maharaja was the emperor of the whole world. And as emperor he had his beautiful wife, young children. But at the age of twenty-four years, just young man, he gave up everything. All right. This is very old story, of course, but you know Lord Buddha. He was also a prince. He was also prince, not ordinary man, and he was ksatriya, and he was always enjoying with beautiful women. That is the palace pleasure accustomed in every, in Oriental countries, that in the palace there are many beautiful girls, they're always dancing and giving pleasure to the kings and the prince. So Lord Buddha was also in such pleasure, but he gave up everything and began to meditate.

There are many hundreds of instances in Indian history that to realize the Brahman pleasure they gave up everything. They gave up everything. That is the way. Tapasya means voluntarily accepting something severe for realizing the supreme pleasure. That is called tapasya. So if, for tasting a little Brahman pleasure, all materialistic pleasures are to be given up, do you think that the Supreme Brahman, Lord Krishna, is enjoying this material pleasure? Is it very reasonable? This Krishna, He's enjoying laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam [Bs. 5.29]. Hundreds and thousands of goddess of fortune are engaged in His service. Do you think these laksmis are material women? How Krishna can take pleasure in the material women? No. This is mistake. Ananda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhavitabhis tabhir ya eva nija-rupataya kalabhih [Bs. 5.37]. In the Brahma-samhita you'll find that He expands His ananda-cinmaya-rasa, the mellow of transcendental pleasure potency. And these gopis are expansion of His pleasure potency. And Radharani is the center. Radharani is the center. So Radharani is not.. Don't take that Radharani is an ordinary woman like we have our wife or sister or mother. No. She is the pleasure potency. And the birth of Radharani was not from the womb of any human being She was found by her father in the field. While father was plowing, he saw one little nice child is lying there, and he had no children, so he caught it and presented to the queen, "Oh, here we have got a very nice child." "How you got?" "Oh, in the field." Just see. Radharani's janma is like that. So this janma is today and Radha, this name is sometimes not found in Bhagavata. So the atheistic class of men protest this Radharani's name is not in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. How this name came, Radharani? But they do not know how to see it. There is anayaradhyate. There are many gopis, but there is mention that by this particular gopi He is served more pleasingly. Krishna accepts this gopi's service more gladly Anayaradhyate. Aradhyate. This aradhate, this word, aradhyate means worshiping. From this word aradhyate, Radha has come. But Radha's name are there in other Puranas. So this is the origin.

So Radha, so Radha and Krishna. Krishna is the enjoyer and He wants to enjoy. So He's the Supreme Brahman. He cannot enjoy anything, atmarama, He can enjoy it in Himself. Therefore Radharani is the expansion of His pleasure potency. Krishna hasn't got to seek external things for His pleasure. No. He is in Himself full, atmarama. So Radharani is expansion of Krishna. Krishna is the energetic, and Radharani is the energy. Just like energy and energetic, you cannot separate. Fire and the heat you cannot separate. Wherever there is fire there is heat, and wherever there is heat there is fire. Similarly, wherever there is Krishna there is Radha. And wherever there is Radha there is Krishna. They are inseparable. But He is enjoying. So Svarupa Damodara Gosvami has described this intricate philosophy of Radha and Krishna in one verse, very nice verse. Radha krishna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini-saktir asmad ekatmanav api bhuvi pura deha-bhedam gatau tau [Cc. Adi 1.5]. So Radha and Krishna is the one Supreme, but in order to enjoy, They have divided into two. Again Lord Chaitanya joined the two into one. Chaitanyakhyam prakatam adhuna. That one means Krishna in the ecstasy of Radha. Sometimes Krishna is in ecstasy of Radha. Sometimes Radha is in ecstasy of Krishna. This is going on. But the whole thing is Radha and Krishna means the one, the Supreme.

So Radha-Krishna philosophy is a very great philosophy. It is to be understood in the liberated stage. Radha-Krishna philosophy is not to be understood in the conditioned stage. But when we worship Radha-Krishna in our conditional stage, actually we worship Laksmi-Narayana. You have seen that picture, this viddhi-marg and raga-marg. Radha-Krishna worship is on the platform of pure love, and Laksmi-Narayana worship is on the regulative principles. So long we do not develop our pure love, we have to worship on the regulative principles. One has to become a brahmachari, one has to become a sannyasi, one has to perform the worship in this way, in the morning he has to rise, he has to offer. So many rules and regulations. There are at least sixty-four rules and regulations. So we shall introduce them gradually as you develop. So in the viddhi-marg, when you have no love for God or Krishna, we have to follow the regulative principles and automatically..., there is practice. When practicing. Just like you practice this mridanga playing. In the beginning it is not in order, but when you become well versed in the practice, the sound will come so nice. Similarly, when we are engaged by regulative principles in the worship of Radha-Krishna, that is called viddhi-marg. And actually when you are on the love platform, then that is called raga-marg. So without viddhi-marg, if anyone wants to learn the raga-marg immediately, that is foolishness. That is foolishness. Nobody can pass M.A. examination without going through the regulative principles of primary schools and colleges. So therefore I do not, I mean to say, indulge in the discussions of Radha and Krishna so easily. Rather go on with the regulative principle at the present moment. Gradually, as you become purified, as you become on the transcendental platform, you'll understand what is Radha-Krishna. Don't try to understand Radha-Krishna very quickly. It is a very big subject. If we want to understand Radha-Krishna very quickly, then there will be so many prakrita-sahajiyas. In India there are prakrita-sahajiya. Just like Radha-Krishna dancing. Radha-Krishna has become a plaything. The painting Radha-Krishna, Krishna is kissing Radha, Radha is kissing. These are all nonsense. Radha-Krishna philosophy has to be understood by the liberated person, not by the conditioned soul. So we shall await for the fortunate moment when we are liberated, then we shall understand radha-krishna-pranaya-vikrtir. Because Krishna and Radha, They are not on the material field. Try to understand. This is Jiva Gosvami's analysis, that Krishna is the Supreme Brahman. The Supreme Brahman cannot accept anything material. So Radha is not in the material field.

Now there is a very nice song. I shall sing if you can play on the harmonium. Yes. This is a Rupa Gosvami's song. (sings)

radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite
gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite
damodara-rati-vardhana-vese
hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese
vrsabhanu-dadhi-nava-sasi-lekhe
lalita-sakhi guna-ramita-visakhe
karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite
sanaka-sanatana-varnita-carite
radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite

This song was sung by Rupa Gosvami. He is the real person, actual person, to understand Radha and Krishna. So he says, "All glories to Radharani." Radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite. "She's so dear to Krishna." Krishna, everyone is trying to love Krishna, but Krishna is trying to love somebody. Now how great She is. Just try to understand. Everyone, the whole world, the whole universe, all living entities, they are trying to love Krishna. Krishna-prem. Lord Chaitanya describes, prema-pumartho mahan. And Rupa Gosvami described that "You are distributing krishna-prem." So krishna-prem is so valuable, but Krishna is after Radharani. Just see how Radharani is great. Just try to understand the greatness of Radharani. Therefore She is so great, and we have to offer our respect. Radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite. How She is? Gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite. Taruni, taruni means young girls. You'll see the pictures, they are all young girls. But of all the young girls, She is the most beautiful. She is enchanting to the young girls also. She is so beautiful. Gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite. Damodara-rati-vardhana-vese. And She always dresses Her so nicely that Damodara, Krishna, becomes attracted by Her beauty. Hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese. And She is the only lovable object of Krishna, and She is the queen of Vrndavan. This queen of Vrndavan... You'll find in Vrndavan, if you go to Vrndavan, everyone is worshiping Radharani. Rani means queen. They are always speaking, "Jaya Radhe!" Radharani. All the devotees in Vrndavan, they are worshiper of Radharani. Hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese. Vrsabhanu-dadhi-nava-sasi-lekhe. And She appeared as the daughter of King Vrsabhanu, and Her companion, Lalita-sakhi and Visakha-sakhi, and the devotees... So on behalf of the pure devotees of Krishna, Rupa Gosvami is praying, karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite. "Oh, my worshipable Radharani, You are full of mercy So I am begging of Your mercy because You are so merciful, very easily You offer, bestow Your mercy. So I am begging Your mercy." Karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite, sanaka-sanatana-varnita-carite. Now somebody may say, "Oh, you are so great, learned scholar, you are so great saintly person, and you are begging mercy from an ordinary girl? How is that?" Therefore Rupa Gosvami says, "Oh, this is not ordinary girl." Sanaka-sanatana-varnita-carite. "This girl's description is possible to be made by great saintly persons like Sanaka-Sanatana. She is not ordinary."

So the lesson is that we should not treat Radharani as ordinary girl, or Krishna as ordinary man. They are the Supreme Absolute Truth. But in the Absolute Truth, there is the pleasure potency, and that is exhibited in the dealings of Radha and Krishna. And Radha's expansion all the gopis, and Krishna is the Supreme Lord.

Thank you very much. Chant Hare Krishna. You can chant? Can you chant? Janardana? All right, you can chant. What is that? No, I have explained that one sloka from this Rama-carita-manasa. Chant Hare Krishna (end)

Gopala Guru dasa : Hamiltron (City of the Future)

My good friend Muni-cari Prabhu picked us up in Auckland and took us down to Hamiltron on the Sunday morning.  We used to do service in Melbourne together, for just over 5 years.  Muni and his wife, Sruticari, have set up a restaurant at Waikato university.  It is a tidy 2 person operation that serves out 120 plates in about 3 hours.

I helped out Muni on Monday and checked out the operations.  In the evening our wives went off to yoga while we stayed at home and ate apple crumble and ice cream, putting our stomachs into some interesting 'asanas'.  After the meal Muni showed me a video called 'Earthlings'.  It is a documentary on the exploitation of animals by human beings and the ecological effects it is having.

Being a vegetarian I have seen many films showing the exploitating of animals, but his one is by far the most comprehensive and striking.  I recomend that everyone watch this film, ALL THE WAY TO THE END.  You will only need to watch it once to get the picture.

After spending a few days with our good friends my mum came and picked us up and took us down to New Plymouth.
