Japa Group : Seeing Krsna's Hand

I had the realisation today about Japa...if we chant attentive, quality rounds we can clear our mind and vision and be able to see Krsna's hand in all aspects of our devotional lives.

Clearing the mind of the dust accumulated for years opens our spiritual eyes and we are able to see Krsna's hand and Krsna's plan unfolding before us.

New Vrndavan, USA : Lord Nrisimhadev Installed

by Hrishikesh

More altars were built and more deities were sculpted and molded. Bhagavatananda Das sculpted two nine-foot tall bas-relief statues of Jaya and Vijaya, the four-armed gatekeepers of Vaikuntha who hold the four symbols of Vishnu: conchshell, disc, club, and lotus flower, which were installed adjacent to the front doors of the temple.

On January 6, 1986 , a seven-foot-tall 400-pound deity of Lord Nrisimhadev, and his devotee, the boy Prahlad, modeled in clay by Soma Das and cast in resin by Kumar Das, were installed in the temple. (The jet-black color of Nrisimhadev was created by mixing powdered coal into the plastic resin.)

“Prahlad is standing with folded hands in front of His Lord, who is seated on a magnificent golden throne. In one hand Nrisimhadev has a conch and in another a chakra (discus). At the end of His powerful fingers are gleaming, golden fingernails. His black and gold mane, like an effulgence, frames His glowing red eyes and fierce snout, where two downward curving white fangs protrude. A jeweled helmet of gold adorns His head.” (96)

Later, by the warm glow of the fireplace, watching

At noon the sliding six foot wide wooden door

Bhakta Chris, New Vrndavan, USA : My India Diary-Part 3

Day 7 12/12 Delhi
Made it through 18 hours in 2-Tier AC Rajdhani Express goodness from Mumbai to Delhi. Daydreaming of wandering as a babaji through the mysterious haze of the Indian countryside begging for rice as the sun sits as a golden disc overhead, giving pleasurable darshan.
Back at ISKCON Delhi overnight, awaiting the arrival of the rest of our crew, including HG Mauricio Prabhu from our Athens, Ohio Dham, and his presence will be as sweet as a fresh rasagulla. This city is completely hellish, with exhaust fumes and untuned guitars from the Bina Music Shop fillinf my lungs and ears. The beauty of the temple, of the gaze of Sri-Sri Radha Parathasarathi is an oasis and soothing balm in the middle of millions seemingly wallowing in their own filth, internally and externally. The brahmacaris here are super fired-up for the Book Marathon (a truck with 5000 Gitas was pulling up just as we were), so at least Prabhupada's mercy flows through the congested, noisy streets and avenues

Off to Vrndavana tomorrow, ready to roll in the dust.

Day 8 12/13 Delhi-Vrndavana

Today marked the auspicious arrival of our two leading superstars from Athens, Ohio Dham: Sriman Mauricio Prabhu and Srimati Jamie Prabhu. Mauricio is one of the most unique dancers in the history of sankirtan, and the Delhi brahmacaris couldn't get enough of his groove. I told Mauricio he better be careful. He'll end up prime minister or a big Bollywoo sensation before too long.

At breakfast I was blessed with the mercy of suddenly going all-out in eating with my bare hands rather than Western spoon-style. It was ecstatic. India is feeling more and more like home.

We spent the rest of the day visiting various sites in the mood of awe and veneration. The Lotus Temple, a Bahai place of worship close to ISKCON Delhi, where silent prayer is the modus operandi. Caitanya was nearly overcome with the urge to let out a big OM in the middle of this massive concrete flower, but he behaved himself. We also took a harrowing rickshaw ride to the Swami Narayana Mandir, of which the sheer size, audacity, and complexity provoked some vibrations of deja-vu and the like, but which left the assembled Vaisnavas a little cold in the feet. Even some folks from Switzerland that we met told us they were not exactly feeling any warmth in the soul from all the assembled gold. I personally got more benefit from observing the art of haggling with taxi wallas as performed by Caitanya on our way back to the Delhi temple.

After picking up the rest of our NV crew at the airport, we took a late-night drive to Vrndavana. We arrived at 3am, taking the dust of the Holy Dham on our heads.

O Krsna, I cannot imagine or remember the pious deeds I performed to earn the privelage of being here in Vrndavana now. Let me fully imbibe what is here for me to experience in love and devotion.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : walkingthefenceline

By Lisa Cornwell
Associated Press

As a fine arts graduate student in the early 1980s, Carol Tyler felt she had to hide her interest in cartoon drawing from teachers. An art form associated with comic books and comic strips wasn’t considered college material.

Now a professional cartoonist and graphic novelist, Tyler began teaching the University of Cincinnati’s first comics art class last year.

Other colleges also have started such classes as critical and academic respect for comics has grown. Courses that began in 2005 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks are starting to draw professional artists and public schoolteachers. Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y., will start its first course this spring.

Applications have increased by at least 50 percent at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vt., which was founded two years ago and won state approval this year for a master in fine arts degree

“Schools are now recognizing the creative and commercial value of comics,” Tyler said as she watched students outline their pencil drawings in ink, filling in sections with black or gray tones. “An interest in comics and cartooning doesn’t have to be a secret any more.”

Some students hope to learn skills useful for advertising, film, video game or illustration careers. Some just enjoy comics, and others want to produce comics or graphic novels…

Tyler’s students learn graphic design, composition, lettering, layout and how to draw figures that convey emotion. She also tries to show them how to organize their thoughts to deliver clear and concise ideas.

Story lines have included the impact of nannies on a student’s life and recollections of a colorful grandfather…

The number of freshmen in the cartooning major at the School of Visual Arts in New York more than doubled from 2002 to last year. The Savannah College of Art and Design offered comics art in 1992 as an elective to a handful of students. The school now has nearly 300 undergraduates and 50 graduate students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sequential art, also known as comics art.

A lot of the credit goes to the emergence in the 1980s of graphic novels offering more complex and complete story lines for more mature audiences. They typically are more durably bound and longer than the floppy comic magazines that told the tales of Superman or the antics of small-town teenager Archie Andrews and friends…

But the young haven’t lost interest.

More high schools and even grade schools are seeking advice on ways to foster student interest in cartooning, said Michelle Ollie, managing director at the Vermont school. The center has had to add a second section to its pre-college workshops to accommodate demand.

The graphic novel’s increased critical acclaim and greater visibility in mainstream bookstores and libraries have contributed to the growing respect for comics art. Educators also cite the worldwide popularity and influence of Japanese comics known as manga - written for children and adults - and the transformation of graphic novels such as “Ghost World” into Hollywood films.

Schools have seen dramatic increases in the number of female students, attributed largely to manga and graphic novel themes that include romance, historical drama, autobiography, fantasy and mystery.

More schools also are studying comics as literature or creative writing in English departments. And although art educators and students say academic prejudice still exists, there are more academic conferences on comics, and libraries are increasingly carrying comic works…

Kripamoya dasa : deshika

Angry Hindu leaders from across Britain massed for an emergency meeting on Sunday following the putting to death of a cow at a temple outside London.

They were united in their condemnation of the ‘officious and self-righteous’ RSPCA, and the ‘unthinking complicity’ of Defra and the police.

Representing dozens of organisations and communities, they converged on the Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hertfordshire and saw for themselves the spot where a temple cow was mercilessly given a fatal injection, despite all pleas and attempts at negotiation on religious grounds.

They were further incensed to learn that the cow’s medical care was being supervised by two veterinary surgeons, neither of whom insisted that the cow be killed, and neither of whom reported the animal as ‘suffering.’

The assembly of delegates expressed their outrage and frustration, considering the killing to be not only an entirely unnecessary waste of life, but also a symbolic attack on Hinduism itself, a religion of non-violence.

“Never before have I seen such anger and solidarity in our community,” said Arjan Vikaria of the Hindu Forum of Britain. “We want answers and retribution and we will not stop until we get them.”

Raj Joshi, vice-chairman of The Society of Black Lawyers, angrily commented: “This action is showing complete disregard for the sensitivities of the third largest religion in this country. It is astonishing that the authorities seem to have disregarded all customary tolerance and understanding, and certainly the relevant legislation, in carrying out this unwarranted and inhumane destruction of an animal.”

Research was presented on the previous conduct of the RSPCA, and the organisation’s sorry history of overly zealous ‘mercy killings’ was discussed. “We call upon Hindus throughout the country to withdraw their financial support from the RSPCA,” said one leader, “they are not morally fit to represent the compassionate nature of the British public.”

“We are very upset by the deceptive way in which this charity has behaved and presented the situation to the public,” said another, “they grossly exaggerated the physical deterioration of the cow, and have covered up the plain fact of the matter, which is that she was being very well cared for by a local, highly qualified vet and her carers.”

Head of the temple where the cow was killed, Gauri Das commented: “The RSPCA deceived us and are now attempting to deceive the public.  A charity organisation with no powers came uniformed into our temple and enforced the killing of Gangotri, a loved and cared for cow with no disease. Her only crime was that she couldn’t walk.”

Delegates formed a task force and will now demand both the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and Hilary Benn MP, Defra minister, to explain who gave the order to kill the cow, despite ministerial promises that no action would be taken because of the special circumstances. They also voted to register their protest in other ways and are considering prosecution of the RSPCA.

NOTES

RESOLUTION FROM NATIONAL MEETING OF HINDUS LEADERS:

“We the undersigned, condemn the murder of Gangotri which we as British
Hindus consider to be a fundamental assault on the principles of our faith.
British Hindus call on the Prime Minister to investigate the actions of the
Chief Constable of Hertfordshire Police, the RSPCA and DEFRA to account for
the murder of Gangotri.”

Their spokesperson said, "We do understand and respect religious beliefs but at the heart of our organization is the belief that animals should not suffer." In their view the pain she felt from “infected sores” was such that the only answer was to kill her by lethal injection, which they duly administered as the horrified devotees looked on.

Jauvana Prabhu, ACBSP : Incarnation of Sound

"So in this yuga, this Kali-yuga, incarnation is Lord Caitanya, and the process of worship is this sound vibration. That is mentioned. In every avatara, every incarnation... Just like Lord Buddha. His name is also mentioned. And there will be another incarnation, Kalki. That is also mentioned. So they are mentioned, yugavatara. And saktyavesavatara. Saktyavesavatara.

"All avataras, their mission is to preach the message of God. Avatara has no other business. The message of God. Saktyavesavatara. This Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, this is also considered saktyavesavatara, the incarnation of sound. Incarnation of sound.

"It is described by Lord Caitanya that kali-kale nama rupe avatara: "In this Kali-yuga, in this age, this incarnation of name -- Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare -- to give facility to the conditioned soul." They cannot do anything. It is very difficult to perform any other religious rituals. This, the best anywhere, everywhere -- you can chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna.

"Namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-sakti. Sakti, this word is used, sakti. And from sakti, that energy, saktyavesavatara. So this name is also saktyavesavatara."

This is a picture of a picture of HH Radhanath Swami. Soon I hope to post pictures and stories of my recent travels and study of Yoga(asana) on the East coast over the past month. The picture has its origin in my life on the very day that I left New Vrindaban for my December travels. A close friend sent me a gift package with a yoga bag, a bead bag, some organic candy and this picture of Maharaja which was nicely framed. As I left the mail man came and he had the package! It was a nice blessing while I hit the road alone and nervous as to what laid in store. Maharaja so lovingly(tolerating my quick turns and singing out loud) accompanied me for the last thousand miles of travel. Im in Philly now sweating to Bikrams Yoga and chilling with my brother. Ill head back to New V on Saturday after a short trip to see the family in DC area. I now have a laptop computer so I have little to no excuse for not writingwithin from now on. Keep a look out!

Sometimes when I dress Radha Syama I think how nice it would be if all the devotees who are serving Them outside the deity room, could all be inside

Sita-pati dasa : Krishna-Avanti: a Hindu school with ISKCON input?

Full circle:

Britain's first state-funded Hindu school has revised its admission policy in view of criticism of its efforts to define a 'practising Hindu',

Here are my posts on this topic:

Here are some posts from Krpamoya Prabhu, who is closer to the action:

Here's a question for ISKCON school teachers - what kind of admissions policies do we have for 100% ISKCON-controlled schools?

Ekendra dasa : Gotu-kola

I just became aware that the herb Gotu-kola grows wild all over the New Govardhana farm here in northern New South Wales, Australia. This stuff has amazing properties. Read more about it here. I highly recommend the book 'The Yoga of Herbs' by Vasant Lad and David Frawley - Amazon ships books to Australia and New Zealand and the prices are still less than what you'd have to pay if you can source the book here. If you order a few more books then the shipping cost per book works out to be reasonable.

Gotu-kola is related to the highly acclaimed Ayurvedic herb Brahmi and shares many similar properties. They are often referred to synonymously.

From Wikipedia: 'Gotu Kola acts as a powerful brain food, and is known for its ability to enhance mind power . It supports and improves all aspects of mental functioning, including comprehension , memory and recollection . It is important because it coordinates these three aspects of mind power to develop the full potential of the mind. It has a very valuable and saught-after Vayasthapana effect, meaning that it helps retard the aging process. It is excellent for both internal and topical application. Gotu Kola nourishes the mind-body connection and enhances the psychoneuro immune (PNI) response. It supports the formation of quality blood , as well as the bone marrow and nerves.'

I'll probably dry some, powder it and combine it with cayenne in a capsule as a daily tonic.

It is clear that he does not pray, who, far from uplifting himself to God, requires that God shall lower Himself to him, and who resorts to prayer not to stir the man in us to will what God wills, but only to persuade God to will what the man in us wills.

- St. Thomas Aquinas
