Bhakta Eric, USA : Scooter Cannonball Run! (for Krishna - and how you can help!)

It’s been awhile. I thought I’d give the Planet ISKCON community a heads-up about what’s going on in my life.

There is a 3,400 mile, coast-to-coast endurance event for scooters that takes place every other year. It’s called the Scooter Cannonball Run (no affiliation with Burt Reynolds). 20 or so scooterists ride from the Pacific to Atlantic Oceans over the span of about 10 days. It’s a grueling event that puts you in the saddle for sometimes over 400 miles a day.

This year’s Cannonball starts on Sept 11 in San Francisco. It ends ten days later in Ocean City Maryland.

Some ride for fun or to see if they can do it. Some ride to race. And some ride for charity (with a bit of the other two thrown in). And that’s me.

After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to do it. I’ve also decided that I will be riding to raise money for Food For Life, a world-wide prasadam distribution organization.

Currently, I’m in Portland, Oregon, having ridden my Vespa GTS from New Vrndavana, zigzagging my way across the country for a distance of 7,500 miles. You can keep up with those antics here.

After visiting Seattle and getting some work done on the scooter, I will be riding back to New Vrndavana and central Pennsylvania (where I live - for now) in the next couple of weeks. Then, in mid-August, I’ll be heading west towards San Francisco for the start of the Cannonball Run.

How you can help.
Like I said, I’m riding to raise money for Food for Life. I’ll be doing this via my blog (which will cross-post to Planet ISKCON and whomever else wants to pick it up). You can donate a flat sum or donate based upon how many miles I do (for example, if you donate a buck for every 100 miles, at the end of the Run (which totals around 3,400 miles), you will have pledged to donate $34).

Whatever money that is donated goes to Food for Life. None of it goes to me. I’m keeping not a farthing. I’m only asking you to donate to Food for Life, I’m not asking you to fund my vacation.

All of this will be set up in the next month or so.

How you can also help is hooking me up with a place to stay and some nice prasadam. Naturally, during the Run, the accommodations are taken care of, but on the ride out to San Francisco, I’ll need floors to crash on. I’ll also need a place to be for Janmastami. I might be near the Denver area by then. I’m hoping to be in Berkeley by Radhastami. I have a place to stay in Berkeley, but meeting some devotees there would be great.

I have little doubt that I can complete the Run. The scooter is in great shape and so am I (relatively speaking). I’m used to long days in the saddle and riding a ton of miles a day. The only differences will be that I’ll be “racing” a bunch of other riders and I’ll be riding with a purpose other than “seeing what there is to see.”

I’d like to get the word out about this as much as possible. Food for Life is an often over-looked ISKCON-related project. Also, Hare Krishnas riding scooters for charity isn’t something that happens everyday. Some HK media coverage would be a means of getting the word out and raising more money for FFL. I also happen to think that it would make a nice Back to Godhead article. :)

Any comments or questions, just leave them below.

Devadeva Mirel, Pennsylvania, USA : The Secret's Out!

Kadamba just left a comment on my Slow Food Won't Make You Fat post asking for the secret to my spelt chapatis. Although I adamantly am against food secrets (or pretty much any secrets for that matter), my spelt chapatis have strictly fallen under the "don't ask, don't tell" category. Until now, that is.

My secret is....and don't tell any of the swamis that I cook for...I use white spelt. *Gasp*!!! It makes a soft and silky dough and is very digestible (believe me, if I can digest it, anybody can). I know it is white flour, but it is not bleached, it is usually always organic and it's spelt. That just sounds good and healthy, doesn't it?

If you are looking for the secret to whole wheat spelt (or whatever it is called) chapatis, keep looking. I don't have that. Sometimes I do, however, mix my white spelt with coarse whole wheat (3:1 ratio). That also works well, as does half and half with chapati flour (which is the complete opposite of organic).

It is funny Kadamba asked this question today because Atita Guna is visiting the Hare Krishna Farm and I just talked to her this morning. I was telling her how I remember when she came last year and Rucira Mataji was here, too. Together they were in the temple kitchen making the most beautiful chapatis. I watched them attentively and my chapatis improved drastically from that point on.

Here are some general tips I picked up from that life changing day:

1) Make your dough soft! Prabhupada said it should feel like an ear lobe. Ghee solids are great for chapati dough.
2) Let your dough rest.
3) Use a ton of flour to roll out your dough! I never saw so much flour involved in chapati making, but it really helps perfect the following...
4) Don't be afraid to roll your chapati thin! By heavily dredging the chapati in flour, you can roll it thin without any adverse effects.
5) smile a lot while cooking!

Anyone else who has magical chapati secrets, feel free to comment on this post.

I hope this helps, Kadamba. Good luck with your spelt chapati endeavors and please pass along any tips you come up with during your experimentation in the kitchen!

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Simple Pleasures — Bamboo and Catalpa

One simple pleasure is watching the new shoots of bamboo growing at a visible daily pace. I thought the patch was as tall as it was ever going to get but this year it has outstripped the previous years’ growth. Notice the emerging shoots before they have leaved out surpassing existing growth.

This is good as it makes bigger poles for harvesting, but it is also a key part of our natural air conditioning. In the summer, as the sun moves farther North it comes around the back side of our house and in the late afternoon shines directly on the side wall. The bamboo shades that a lot and the taller the bamboo, the better the shade. This helps keep the house from heating up.

We cover the south windows with curtains during the day to prevent solar heating, then at night open all the windows in the house when the outside air gets cooler than the inside. In the morning, as air temp rises, we go around and shut them all back up and draw the curtains.

While this takes a few minutes effort morning and evening it keeps our house comfortable without using an electrical air conditioner. The bamboo’s shade has helped this process as it has grown in on the northwest side of the house.

Bamboo is not very common at our latitude.

Another fun thing is when the catalpa trees drop their flowers. For a couple of weeks the lawn gets decorated.

While these things might seem boring to someone whose senses are overstimulated by NASCAR races, mosh pits, 300 TV channels, or constant exposure to electronics, if you can slow down a bit and look around, you may find similar things where you live.

Devadeva Mirel, Pennsylvania, USA : Florida...Not So Bad After All

I was feeling discouraged in my effort to get legal in Florida. It seemed so difficult and small business unfriendly compared to Pennsylania, where the Amish run tax-free, cooking up batches of apple butter like it was more necessary to life than salt. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Ag sent me a packet containing all the paperwork I needed to file as well as helpful booklets and printouts of governmental policies. It was no big deal to call up the head guy for my county to find out that, no, don’t worry about that regulation, you don’t have to follow it.

But Florida had no packet of paperwork, just a website which I was directed to every time I emailed them a question. There were no easy answers, just links leading to more links.

The biggest thing that was stressed was that I would have to get set up in a commercial kitchen. Every time I emailed them, this was the most revealing info the people at the Ag Department imparted unto me. And for good reason. This seems to be the only real regulation the state has. Go Florida! You just won my heart.

As it turns out, Pennsylvania isn’t that great after all. In addition to all the paperwork there is lab testing for soluble solids for each product. This testing is only around $65, but still, do that for every single product and it adds up quickly.

I find the apparent ease in setting up shop a bit unbelievable. In fact, I emailed the Department of Agriculture in Florida 3 times in 2 days just to clarify. What got me to stop? When they wrote back “I think we answered your questions already.”

Florida, here’s a big kiss for you! MMMMUH!

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA : Processed Meats dangerous for human consumption

Have you ever wondered why the consumption of processed meats is so strongly linked to cancers of the colon, breast, prostate and pancreas? The evidence continues to mount, as demonstrated by a recent study showing a 67% increase in pancreatic cancer for people consuming moderate amounts of processed meat on a frequent basis. (Pulse; 4/23/2005, Vol. 65 Issue 16, p10).

Conventional medical doctors and nutrition researchers tend to put the bulk of the blame on the saturated fat content of processed meats, but that ignores two notable culprits that I think are far worse offenders when it comes to human health. Let's take a closer look at these two problems with processed meats.

The first problem is found in the fats of these processed meats. The problem isn't the fat molecules themselves, but rather the toxic chemicals, heavy metals and environmental pollutants that are found inside those fat molecules.

You see, fat tissues -- whether in a cow or a human -- tend to concentrate whatever pollutants are found in the mainstay diet of the animal. A cow eats literally tons of grass in its lifetime, and in doing so, it collects and concentrates low-level pollutants found in its diet. For non-organic beef, it's quite common to find trace amounts of heavy metals (mercury, cadmium), pesticides, and even PCBs. That's because, for non-organic beef, feed practices are rather horrifying. You'd be shocked to learn what's perfectly legal to feed to cows intended for human consumption.

So while conventional doctors tend to put the health risk blame on the saturated fat found in meat products, I think it has a lot more to do with the toxic substances concentrated in those fat tissues. A cow is much like a land bottom-feeder, and eating meat from a non-organic cow is a lot like eating shrimp from the bottom of the ocean.

These toxins, when consumed, are clearly and unquestionably linked to cancers as well as nervous system disorders that can accelerate Alzheimer's disease and dementia. They also stress the liver and impair immune system function. The human body should never be exposed to mercury, PCBs or the rocket fuel chemicals that are now almost universally found in cows' milk products across the country (in a 2005 Texas Tech University study, perchlorate was detected in 46 of 47 store-bought samples of cows' milk across 11 states).

The second (and more important) reason processed meats are so strongly correlated with cancer is, I believe, the continued use of a cancer-promoting additive called sodium nitrite.

This ingredient, which sounds harmless, is actually highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. There, it forms a variety of nitrosamine compounds that enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc with a number of internal organs: the liver and pancreas in particular. Sodium nitrite is widely regarded as a toxic ingredient, and the USDA actually tried to ban this additive in the 1970's but was vetoed by food manufacturers who complained they had no alternative for preserving packaged meat products.

You can find sodium nitrite in nearly every packaged meat product imaginable. It's listed right on the label of products like bacon, breakfast sausage, beef jerky, pepperoni, sandwich meat, ham, hot dogs, and even the meats found in canned soups. If you and I walked into any grocery store in America, I could show you hundreds of products that contain this ingredient right now. And I believe this sodium nitrite is the primary cause of pancreatic cancer in humans who consume even moderate quantities of processed meats.

If sodium nitrite is so dangerous, why does the food industry use it? Simple: this chemical just happens to turn meats bright red. It's actually a color fixer, and it makes old, dead meats appear fresh and vibrant. Thus, food manufacturers insist on using sodium nitrite for the simple reason that it sells more meat products. Consumers are strongly influenced by the color of grocery products (which is why Florida oranges are often dipped in red dye, by the way), and when meat products look fresh, people will buy them, even if the true color of the months-old meat is putrid gray.

There are other problems with processed meats, nutritionally speaking. Meat has zero fiber, for one thing. But in terms of the major causative factors of disease in the human body, I believe the two primary culprits are the heavy metals and toxins concentrated in the fat tissues of cows, combined with the sodium nitrite additives used by meat processing companies to preserve their products and give them enhanced visual appeal.

And thus, the saturated fat argument is a distraction from the real causes of cancer that the U.S. beef industry doesn't want to talk about. It's not the saturated fat that causes pancreatic cancer. For example, coconut oil consumption wouldn't cause a person's risk of pancreatic cancer to leap 67%, although it's still saturated fat. The real cause of the cancer, I believe, is what's found INSIDE the fat, and what's ADDED to the meat during processing and packaging.

ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia : Krishna carnival lights up London

Rathayatra chariot
The chariots were pulled by rope through the streets of central London

Londoners are used to seeing juggernauts rumbling through their streets, but this was a very different kind of heavy traffic.

It was a riot of colour in the heart of the capital - three 40-foot-high wooden chariots pulled from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square, accompanied by a colourful crowd singing, chanting and dancing their way along the route.

Britain’s Hare Krishnas were holding their 40th annual Rathayatra Carnival of Chariots, a street festival which brings together a mixture of devotees and bemused onlookers.

The ancient ceremony originates in Jagannatha Puri in India - giving British colonial forces a new word to describe a huge, lumbering vehicle.

‘Everyone’s happy’

The UK Hare Krishna movement hopes the day brings a touch of fun and celebration to London’s thoroughfares.

But organiser Varsana Devi Dasi said the worshippers who used ropes to pull the three chariots - one each for the deities of Jagannatha, Subhadra, and Balarama - did not face an easy task.

Praghosa Das

We just want everyone to have a good time
Praghosa Das

“It’s quite an effort to pull them - the chariots are huge,” he added.

“The wheels are made by the same wheelsmiths who make the Queen’s carriages.

“But everyone’s happy to help out - it’s a lot of fun and you always end up having a good time.”

When the procession reached its destination at Trafalgar Square, organisers had laid on entertainment, face-painting, information about Indian culture and enough vegetarian food for 35,000.

Praghosa Das, leader of the UK’s Hare Krishnas, said he hoped passers-by would have their days brightened up by the carnival.

The 47-year-old Dubliner - born Paul Murphy - first became interested in the movement when he landed a job working in a Hare Krishna-run vegetarian restaurant in 1980.

Bhuta Bhavana Das
Bhuta Bhavana Das became interested in eastern philosophy at university

“I’m glad the sun’s shining today. It’s meant to be a celebration and we just want everyone to have a good time,” he said.

“Our founder Srila Prabhupada said our way of life is simply ‘chanting, dancing and feasting’, and that’s what we’re giving everyone here today.”

Other converts to the faith said they enjoyed the festival’s openness and inclusiveness.

Bhuta Bhavana Das, a 32-year-old youth worker, became interested in the movement while he was studying philosophy at the London School of Economics.

“The great thing about today is that you have loads of Christians, Muslims, people of all faiths and none.

“The whole point of Hare Krishna is that there are many different paths to enlightenment - it’s not about saying ‘My God is better than your God.’”

ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia : Flower Palace in Nandagram

BY DEENA BANDHU

My dear Prabhujis, Please accept my humble obeisances _/\ò_. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Not many people know about it, but every year on Ganga Dashera and Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi there are Phul Bangalas (Flower Palaces) and Kavi Sanmelans (Poetry Recitals) in Varsana and Nandagram respectively. Mostly just the local people come and a few outsiders, but it is a truely wonderful ecstatic experience.

For the last month or so, I’ve been staying at Vrinda Kunda since this is supposed to be the hottest time of the year and no one comes for Parikrama so I can work on development there for the pleasure of the Vaishnavas. Every morning the Kokilas begin their beautiful songs at 3:30 AM as my alarm clock. In the distance the peacocks also begin to cry.

One visting devotee had his cell phone with him the other day and it was my daughter’s birthday, so I called her directly from Vrinda Kunda. As we were talking, the Kokila began his famous song. “What was that!” she exclaimed, “It was so beautiful”. I told her that was the Kokila singing. Just then a flock of Vrinda Devi’s parrots flew by in full chatter mode. “Where are you?” she asked. I told her that I’m calling her directly from Vrinda Kunda. Some more birds began their singing. She was hearing it all over the phone. Prabhupada told that the singing of the birds in Vrindavan is more auspicious than hearing the Vedic Verses.

It happened to be Ganga Dashera, so we loaded up the pujaris family in Vrinda Devi’s car and we headed off to Varsana. We arrived at about
8 pm and the festivities had just started. There was an elaborate flower palace woven with jasmine and mogra flowers stretched accross wooden frames in the darshan mandap as the Deities were there outside Their altar. The fans in the temple room wafted the fragrance to the four directions. This year was the earliest monsoon in 108 years and it had started the previous day, so the atmosphere was quite cooling. This was highly unusual since mid June means the temperature never goes below 45 C (over 120 F).

All the brahmins from Varsana were sitting on one side and the brahmins from Nandagram on the other in the courtyard facing each other at the Lotus Feet of Sri Sri Ladli Lal. Both sides had two microphones and they began reciting very sweet verses of Brijbhasha poetry. Dhanya Brijbhasha, dusri na bhasha, te ne vani ki vidhata ko bolbo sikhayo hai. Glorious Brijbhasha, there’s not another like it. You even taught the iventor of language how to speak!

Some recited old verses and others recited their own compositions. One would immediately be inspired by the other and the next one would take a cue from the last verse spoken and start another. Even if you don’t understand, Brijbhasha is so sweet to hear. Now I can understand about 80% of the words and maybe 40% of the meanings, but it just takes you to Goloka Vrindavan.

One of the most famous Brijbhasha poets was Raskhana, who was previously a muslim who fell in love with Radha and Krishna. Raskhan was actually his muslim name, but in hindi it means the abode of rasa, or the treasure house of love. He says,

brahman main dundhro puranana ganan, veda rica suni cauguna chayan dekhyo, sunyo kabuhu na kitun vah svarupa au kaise subhayan terata herata hari paryo raskhani batayau na loga lugayan dekhau durau vah kunja kutir mem baitha palotatha radhika payan

“I searched the Supreme in songs of puranas, hearing vedic verse my desire quadrupled. Still nowhere did I see or hear about His real form or nature Aho! cries Rashkan. All my seaching and calling has failed! Then afar in the kunja kutira I saw Him sitting massaging Sri Radhika’s lotus feet.”

Of course the verse that introduced me to Raskhan, demonstrates his attraction for Braja:

manushya ho to vahi raskhan vaso braja gokula gaon ke gvaran jo pashu ho to kaha vaso mero carau nit Nanda ki dhenu manjaran pahan ho to vahi giri ko ki daryo kar chatra purandara karan jo khaga ho to vasero mero mila kalindi kul kadamba ki daran

“If I have to take a human birth, then let it be as a cowherd in the village of Gokula. If as an animal, then let me graze with the cows of Nanda Maharaja. If as a stone, then let it one on that hill that he lifted on his hand against the anger of Purandara (Indra) If as a bird, the let it be in kadamba’s branches overlooking the Kalindi’s bank!”

We had planned to stay only an hour, but we stayed up till 10 PM when there was aratika to end the program. Very wonderful mahaprasad was distributed to all.

Then next night was Nirjala Ekadasi and the festival was at Nandagram. They bring the Deities of Krishna Balaram around to the side altar where a beautiful phul bangala was made. Somehow although usually they don’t allow photos at all, we saw several people were snapping away with their mobiles. So my driver Gita Govinda whipped his out and got some photos for me to show you. Of course these are cellphone photos, so the quality is not the best, but anyway you’ll get the picture!

But the kavi sanmelan was a failure. The Nandagram pujaris didn’t arrange for a sound system. All the Varsana Brahmins were seated facing the Nandagram brahmins in the courtyard waiting for a sound system that never arrived. They went on anyway, but unless you were sitting directly with them it was impossible to hear over the noise of the pilgrims and children. It was a big embarrasment in front of the Varsana brahmins who had made such a nice arrangement the previous night. The phul bangala was glorious with the sweet scent wafting hear and there. So after taking darshan to our full satisfaction, we returned to take rest at Vrinda Kunda.

motina mala bani nata ki lataki latava lata ghungharavari anga hi anga jarava lasai aru sisa lasai pagiya jaratari puraba punyani te raskhani su mohini murati ani nihari caryau disani ki lai chabi ani kai jhanke jhorokhe mem banke bihari

“The dancer Krishna sports beautiful pearl necklace, and His curls are dangling here and there. Gem encrusted gold ornaments decorate his limbs and on Head is gold embroidered turban. By his previous pious works Raskhan is able to see the most enchanting form of his Lord. Decorated by beauty from the four directions, Banke Bihari is seen through lattice-work windows.”

ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia : Snana Yatra 2008 in Singapore

BY MADAN MOHAN

Hare Krsna prabhus and matajis.

Sometimes the living entities make plans to the best of their abilities. But as many of us would have realized, only if the Lord sanctions, will the plans materialize. But The Lord being the best friend and well wisher of all gives more than planned when devotees come up with sincere spiritual plans. This is what the devotees from Singapore realized with regards to the Snana Yatra festival for this year. It all began as the devotees started planning and working hard to conduct Jagannath’s Snana Yatra festival. Announcements were made, and a total of 1500 invitations were sent out to the public. Snana Yatra was going to take place on a weekday and, as such the devotees intensified the publicity. In Singapore not many people get the time to do anything else other than work on a weekday. But this stereotyped situation was about to change by the mercy of the Lord of the Universe.

Firstly, one week prior to Snana Yatra H. H Narasingha Maharaj decided to visit Singapore. Maharaj’s presence and his wonderful lectures captivated the hearts of devotees and the public alike. And just as everyone was enjoying the association of Maharaj, he made it known to us that he would be staying right through Snana Yatra and even agreed to deliver the lecture for the day. The Lord’s great plan had started to unfold. Just one day before the Yatra, the devotees received another wonderful news. This time, we heard that H. H Kavichandra Maharaj would be arriving just in time for the Snana Yatra festival. The Lord of the universe was working His magic.

On the day of Snana Yatra, as expected; only very few devotees were present at the start of the program. Nevertheless the devotees were not disheartened as the Lord together with Lord Baladev and Mother Subhadra made His way into the premise. Once their Lordships had come in, the crowd toll started to increase. Wonderful abishek was performed for Their Lordships as the 2 Maharajas came in to grace the occasion. And to everyone’s surprise as Narasingha Maharaj and Kavichandra Maharaj started to speak on the glories of the Lord, the entire Gujertai association (where Snana Yatra was being held) was filled with people. There was no room, as devotees started strolling in. It was a great wonder, as it is almost impossible to get such a big crowd on a weekday.

With great enthusiasm the devotees heard the glories of the Lord. Right after class, bhoga offering was made to the Lord. Arati was then performed amidst ecstatic kirtan, as the devotees danced for the pleasure of Their Lordships. H. H Kavichandra Maharaj then led the devotees in chanting Narasimha pranam. It was truly wonderful. And to conclude, sumptuous prasadam was served to one and all. At the end, the devotees realized that a total of 250 plates of prasadam were distributed!

The Lord came, brought His exalted devotees and attracted the crowd. The Lord’s pastimes not only took place thousands of years ago on Mother Earth, but they are still taking place at every moment of our lives. Such is the glory of the Lord. All glories to the Lord of the universe, Jagannatha Swami. Please feel free to take a look at the festival pictures at: http://picasaweb.google.com/davin81/SnanYatra08

H.H. Mukunda Goswami : Temptation

Some may wonder why Haridasa Thakura is glorified daily. In addition to chanting 300,000 Names of God daily (about 174 rounds), he was tempted at midnight by a beautiful, young, nicely dressed woman (a prostitute paid by an envious, wealthy local Hindu landholder). He passed this supreme test by not succumbing to the attractive young woman’s proposals, saying that he would agree to her requests, but only after fulfilling his vow to chant. As the story goes, after three days he did not succumb, and the prostitute became a bhaktin.

Candidasa dasa : Calcium and iron on a vegan diet

Got milk?

My bodily situation forces me to have a vegan diet (and the unhealthiness of the substance formally known as ‘milk’, as well as the extreme cruelty of the dairy farming industry would probably lead me to be vegan even if I could digest milk). So, some people may ask: “how do you get your calcium and iron?”

The answer is not: “you must eat dairy products!”, or “you must take this kind of supplement!”.

The dairy industry has long perpetuated the myth that calcium is only available from milk (much like the meat industry has perpetuated the myth that the only way to get protein is by eating lots of meat). It is a testimony to the power of advertising that we believe these seemingly “universally acknowledged truths”. Calcium is, in fact, available from a variety of vegetables, in much greater quality and quantity than it is present in milk.

Taking a supplement is also not the answer. The body and different types of foods work as an integrated system, each supporting each other. So, just popping a pill with the necessary mineral simply results in that substance passing through the body, unabsorbed.

You can eat as much calcium as you like, but without doing any exercise it won’t be absorbed into your bones. Without exercise calcium goes into your joints instead. The result: stiff joints and weak bones.

Calcium also dependents on vitamin D to aid its absorption. The best way to get vitamin D is to spend 5 - 10 minutes in sunlight every day (without sunglasses or sunscreen). So, exercise, sunlight and calcium must be taken together (as explained in greater detail in these videos). Calcium and protein, however, do not go well together. People who consume too much protein also absorb less calcium.

Interestingly, however, calcium and dark fruit juices inhibit the absorption of iron in the body. To help the absorption of iron, vitamin C is required. Great sources of vitamin C are lemon or orange juices.

On the other hand, dark fruit juices (like red grape juice) are good for removing toxins in the food. So, when eating food which is unhealthy or full of pesticides (basically anything non-organic), it is a good idea to also take some dark fruit juice with it in order to remove at least some of the toxins.

So, everything works together in a web of interrelation and support. There are no quick fixes. A holistic healthy lifestyle is required.

An uncharitable perspective from a critic.

An apologetic explanation by recently departed comedian George Carlin.

Anyway, just be yourself and make a contribution. In the fullness of time by applying yourself as you are to the process of Krishna Consciousness you will become increasingly aware of your existence apart from that temporary identity.

No point criticizing it or mentalling out too much about it - transcend it.

Devadeva Mirel, Pennsylvania, USA : Today is the Greatest...

What a day! This morning I was out picking rose petals with the kids when our favorite monk in a Civic hatch pulled up to retrieve his bike, which was parked in our garage for the week. Everyone loves Balaramachandra and my son may indeed be his greatest fan. After some horseplay and a few glasss of lemonade, we all headed to the Spruce Hill Lunch to meet up with the other folks visiting from New Vrindavan (West Virginia).

While my kids filled up on soup and ice cream, I actually had the opportunity to speak to some adults! And one of the adults I got to chat with was Radha Sundari, a recent Sabjimata customer and a sweetheart of a person. She and her husband were visiting Gita Nagari Farm along with Soma Prabhu. I really enjoyed speaking with Soma, who happens to be working on getting a paw-paw orchard in shape. He is working closely with Varsana Swami--who is perhaps the most humble human on earth--and without doubt the undisputed easiest house guest to host.

Balaramachandra, who's part time job as Superman is a source of huge inspiration in my life, gave me some business tips. He also gave me the run down on his mulberry ice cream recipe. Very purple stuff. As a monk must do, Balaramachandra imparted some transcendental knowledge unto this simple soul. He told me that my business effort is actually niskarma yoga and is very beneficial to the development of my spritual life. I hope! He was inspired to tell me this after hearing me talking to a friend about how I like making jam, despite the fact that I make basically no profit on my sales. See, as long as my business stays unprofitable, I am certain to make spritual advancement. ;) ;)

When the kids and I returned home, I picked more rose petals and then moved on to our raspberry patch. The raspberries are just beginning to ripen and I am having a difficult time outpicking my kids, who tend to only deposit them in the bottomless bucket also known as their stomachs!

After some more outside time, I herded everyone into the car so we could drop off our tent (a casualty of our move) at Sudevi's house. Sudevi's tiny neighbors, Devahuti and Pishima, were outside playing so my kids wandered off in their direction. Sudevi and I spent some time talking on her deck before all the kids, and the girls' mother, Purana, joined us for an impromptu bread, butter and jam party. Acharya, Sudevi's husband, had made the bread and strawberry jam. The kids were completely happy with their simple yet oppulent dinner and I was blissed out to be eating someone else's cooking. Acharya is one of the best cooks I know. His wife is the one who trained him to cook and she follows behind as a close second.

Days like today, although not very productive on the jam front, are very joyful. They have that warm, breezy feeling of summertime and are scented with freshly cut grass. Slow and unrushed, faces spread easily into smiles. Nights come late and bring the refreshing cool of a second wind. Although not much was accomplished during the day but some casual picking, I feel enlivened enough to stay up tonite and make at least a few cases of jam.

Devadeva Mirel, Pennsylvania, USA : What To Do With...Ginger Jam

We have started counting down for our move date which also means we have to clear out our cupboards and fridge. What to do with the half eaten jar of Ginger Jam I had hanging around? Well, take a look.

For dinner I made barbecued gluten kabobs because ‘tis the season. Alongside the kabobs are spanokopita—butter brushed phyllo triangles stuffed with ricotta and mashed broccoli. And to be eaten as a dip for the kabobs or spanokopita is a Middle-Eastern inspired mezze. After reading the Conscious Kitchen’s posting on the cookbook Spice, I had a bit of a craving for anything with tahini as an ingredient. However, I was out of tahini so I did the next best thing. I combined oven roasted eggplants, chickpeas, hing, lemon juice, salt and ginger jam in the blender. The result was unsurprisingly like a hummus/baba ghanouj cross-- minus the sesame paste. It was very light and smooth.

After washing my blender, I filled it with whey, freshly picked lemon balm and the rest of the ginger jam to make a lightly sweetened, protein rich drink “good for digestion” (as is often said in India). The result was frothy and effervescent, which I found very refreshing on such a hot evening.

After successfully experimenting with the ginger jam in my cooking, I have to say I think it is a good idea. Talk about convenience. It can be used to add a little sweet heat to any dish in as much time as it takes to scoop out a tablespoon full and scrape it into a pot. No grater required.

Japa Group : Inner Dialogue

Inner dialogue of the mind is one of the main enemies of concentrated Japa. Even if you are in peaceful surroundings or in a temple, at the right time, and all the other external things are conducive for good chanting, prajalpa within your mind can create trouble for you.
Inner dialogue is very much connected to our false-ego, ego defends our false bodily identity and pride. Ego gets us into useless talks and quarrels and within our mind we recall or plan our external quarrels. Someone chastises us and in our mind we plan how to defend ourselves.
Ego is very hard and subtle but through attentive chanting one can gradually have some understanding how much we are controlled by it.
When we are strongly controlled by the lower modes of nature, we easily get into debates and start to quarrel with devotees due to some useless reason. Especially in the early morning in your Japa time, one should be very careful not to get into any unneccessary discussions or commenting on anything that can wait for later.
Instead one can pray to the Holy name, that one´s consicousness can rise above the bodily platform and that our diamond-like ego can be melted. One can try to follow a vow "For today, I am not going defend myself if
corrected, I will not get into any useless talks or comment other doings unnesserarily."
Recently I happened to look at a non-Krishna conscious esoteric book. Philosophically nothing important but there were some good points concerning the ego. The main character was trained towards spiritual elevation by smashing his pride repeatedly. There was a lesson, that one should try to keep his mind controlled even if ridiculed or chastised without reason.
It reminds me from a statement of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Maharaja: "Those who critisize me are my friends, those who flatter me are my enemies." Often we think the opposite.

Japa Group : Nama Seva - Serving the Holy Name

Lord Chaitanya taught the philosophy of sankhya yoga through the chanting of the Holy names, saying that His names are the sound incarnation...since the Lord is the absolute whole there is no difference between His Holy name and His form. According to Teachings of Lord Chaitanya book...as one practices this sound vibration he passes through three stages of development: the offensive stage, the clearing stage and the transcedental stage. In the offensive stage the chanter desires all kinds of material happiness, in the second stage he becomes clear of all material contamination and in the third stage he attains the stage of loving God.
Everyone wants the ultimate goal of chanting...sometimes we may think that just by repeating like a tape in a mechanical way, we will attain it but it's said that we need to chant with our hearts, in a real pure serving mood and then Krsna will descend in the heart...and from the heart He comes to the tongue and dances there....but first we need to be nama seva and be determined to pass through all stages to get to this point of transcendental chanting.

Japa Group : Feeling the Protection of Krsna

I was reading recently where Srila Prabhupada mentions that a devotee only requires to take shelter of Krsna and His Holy names in whatever situation he finds himself...even in the hellish planets.
It reminds me of a story of the devotees in Bosnia when the war was raging there, one young devotee was worshipping Lord Nrsimhadeva and chanting the Holy names very seriously...he said he was never afraid and felt the protection of Krsna...this was evident when hearing about how the area around their building was virtually untouched but the rest had been flattened by bombs and the war machines.
It was a good example of how Krsna protects His devotees according to the degree that the devotee surrenders and takes shelter.

Kripamoya dasa : Jagannatha’s Raspberries: Still more from Rathayatra

I was able to offer Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra each a carton of raspberries and strawberries picked fresh from my garden on Rathayatra morning. I placed the cartons in the freezer and by the end of the procession they were fresh and cooling for them. I walked up to each of the three colourful chariots and handed the fruits to the priests.

When I was a child we lived in a farming area in Cornwall and there was a strong tradition of celebrating Harvest Festivals in our Methodist chapel. Every year at harvest time the farmers would all bring in something they had personally grown and place it on an offering table. As they did so, we would all sing the almost obligatory:

We plough the fields and scatter, the good seed on the land,
But it is fed and watered, by God’s Almighty hand

By the time everyone had made their contribution the table was overflowing. As a child I was struck by just how much produce everyone was growing. And, naturally, that the first of the harvest was being offered to God.

Krishna consciousness is like having a harvest festival every single day. I suppose as devotees we’d like to grow everything ourselves, but as most of us are city-dwellers that’s not an option. So its a good feeling to be able to offer something you’ve planted, watered, weeded, protected from slugs, and finally picked. Of course we can’t take the credit, we didn’t design the fruits and flowers; didn’t create the DNA that shapes them; didn’t organise the processes that make a flower bloom or a fruit ripen. But the bit we get to do: choose whether or not to offer it to the Origin of All - well, maybe we can give ourselves a small pat on the back every time we manage to do that.

Krishna certainly does. In the Bhagavad-gita He says that He blesses and personally reciprocates with everyone who offers Him something with love and devotion; and thats the whole point of making offerings to Krishna. Its not that He needs raspberries; He is the God of all Raspberries after all, since He created them, grows them, and ripens them too. But He’s waiting for us to show that we understand where everything comes from, to offer our gratitude, and by offering things to Him, to develop our dormant love for Him one little bit at a time.

This time of year my garden has many fruits, vegetables and flowers growing strongly; future offerings for Krishna. Its a fairly traditional English ‘cottage garden’ with some things that are strongly associated with the English. So besides the vegetables you’d find in most gardens the world over: the sweetcorn, spinach, lettuce, beans and courgettes (zuchini) there’s also runner beans and broad beans, both growing up bamboo canes. There’s also a rhubarb patch, a blackcurrant bush, an apple tree and a cherry tree.

I offer arati every day, so a wide variety of flowers make it on to our home altar. In no particular order, our Pancha-Tattva and guru-parampara receive valerian, sweet william, traditional English hollyhocks and foxgloves; lupins, primroses, verbena, fuschia, campanula, hydrangea and, of course, the faithful marigold. There’s also the highly fragrant budlia, or ‘butterfly tree,’ named by a Reverend Buddle, a Church of England man, back in the days when there were still plants to name. And finally lilacs - because where would an English garden be without them?

Chant and Be Happy

A devotee of the Lord is suppose to be soft hearted, but being that I am a Sergeant First Class in the US Army, well that is not always practical. The Army’s definition of leadership is, one who provided purpose, direction and motivation to soldiers to accomplish a common objective or goal. Like any independent jiva in the material world, we all think we are the boss.  I deal with mostly young adults, the youngest kid in the platoon is 18, so often times they frustrate me with the way they accomplish tasks.  The other day, I was very frustrated with a situation and sitting at a desk alone, trying to calm down. Everyone saw I was upset and let me be alone. One officer came up to me and said Sergeant, why are you so upset? I don’t want to talk about it Sir, I replied. He said, yes this world is crazy and often we get caught up in it.  He went to leave and said to me "Sergeant, I know one word that can cheer you up."  I looked up and said "sure Sir, please just let me get some alone time." He started to walk out, and turned around and yelled "KRSNA!!!" and instantly I felt a smile come to my face. He said " This Name you are chanting is nice, and sweet and gives so much happiness, I chanted it when I feel sad and instantly I have a smile and forget my worries."  The Lord is so kind that His glorious Name is cleansing the hearts of all He mets.

syät kåñëa-näma-caritädi-sitäpy avidyä-

pittopatapta-rasanasya na rocikä nu

kintv ädaräd anudinaà khalu saiva juñöä

svädvé kramäd bhavati tad-gada-müla-hantré

The holy name, character, pastimes and activities of Kåñëa are all transcendentally sweet like sugar candy. Although the tongue of one afflicted by the jaundice of avidyä [ignorance] cannot taste anything sweet, it is wonderful that simply by carefully chanting these sweet names every day, a natural relish awakens within his tongue, and his disease is gradually destroyed at the root. (Upadeçämåta, 7- Srila Rupa Goswami)

Srila Prabhupada stress while psychically present on this plant the distribution of his books. Srila Prabhupada would deeply appreciate the efforts of the devotees while reading the sankritan scores. I was informed about the monthly sankritan festival at ISV, by HG Vaisesika Prabhu. For those that don’t know, ISV has an amazing book distribution program, where householders, bramacaris and even children participate in the distribution of Srila Prabhupada’s literature. Prabhu asked if I would like to be part of the marathon also.  After talking with Vaisesika Prabhu, I was blown away by the enthusiasm he has for this service and very happily agreed to also get involved.  I went out one day with two cases of books and sat in front of the base exchange, and slowly approached people. The weather was 120 degrees and the air smelled like burning trash but still I thought, why get so wrapped up in these things. I am out trying to please Srila Prabhupada by giving others his books. The day was amazing, I stood in the same spot for five hours! Many came and took literature, some just came and asked what i was doing. The general attitude of both the soldiers and civilian workers was a positive one. One man asked me, what makes these books so special? My answer; these books are windows to the spiritual world. And with that said I showed him a picture in the Bhagavad-Gita of Krsna showing Arjuna the universal form. The man was blown away, he kept saying wow, this is far out, is this God?  Then I showed him a few pictures from the Krsna book and his heart melted. He related to me that he sees so much  death and usually to escape, he smokes cigarettes or plays video games. He gave a big donation and took five books from me and explained that for the first time since arriving in Iraq over 8 months ago, he felt real happiness from seeing these pictures.   Srila Prabhupada gave us the greatest treasure, he gave us the only path for going back to Godhead.  The best part is, we just have to make some endeavor, Srila Prabhupada will take us to Krsna.  Here is a story recently emailed to me form Mother Nirakula. She heard this from HH Giriraja Maharaja at a japa retreat.

Srila prabhupada was giving a lecture and during his talk he told the devotees "if you become 90% Krishna Conscious you will go back home, back to Godhead". Looking out into his audience he saw that the devotees looked crestfallen, so then he said "If you become 80% Krishna Conscious you will go back home, back to Godhead", still the devotees expressed doubt they could attain 80%. So then Srila Prabhupada said "Ok, 70%" and then the devotees responded "jai"! But as Srila Prabhupada returned to his quarters, another devotee expressed concern that he would not be able to become 70% KC, so then Prabhupada said "Ok, you just hold on to my dhoti, I have the key to the backdoor."

Sadhana:

Japa: By the Lords mercy we are rising at 1:30 am and chanting our rounds. We are really trying to concentrate on hearing the mantra. Our goal is to chant 25 good, solid rounds. Now we are chanting warm up rounds, before chanting our normal 25. On Sunday, we are still chanting 64, this past Sunday, one boy came and chanted 16 with us. Still our Japa is a great concern of us.

Seva: The daily Seva I perform for Their Lordships are sustaining me in this difficult situation. Our worship is simple, but we are adding a few mantras for the Lords pleasure. Also we are getting others involved in Their service. These people donate fruits or some orange juice for Their morning offering. They are becoming a big hit on the base and many stop by to take some darshan of Them.

Reading: Cc Madhya Lila Vol. 4, The Lord instructs Srila Rupa Goswami

A Transcendental Diary by HG Hari Sauri Prabhu; I am reading relishing these pastimes with Srila Prabhupada. Us third generation of devotees should read as much about Srila Prabhupada as possible, to better understand his mood and to develop a relationship with him.

    BG Soft: 20
    POY: 100
    ISO: 5
    Chant and be Happy: 38

With less than two months left in country, we are asking for everyone to keep us in their prayers. We need them to get past our material desires and become a servant of the servant of Srila Prabhupada.

Here is an instruction we should never forget

"These books are for you," Prabhupada said as he pointed to several of the books he had written. "Do not make it an export business. They only buy and sell to others. For themselves they have no use." Prabhupada imitated a devotee distributing his books, "Please take this book. It is very important." He then took the customer's role: "Oh, it is important? What is it about?" Prabhupada again switched roles. "I don't know, it is for you!" We all laughed sheepishly. "My only criticism of the devotees is that they think my books are for distribution and not for reading."

Prabhupada wanted his disciples to become philosophically strong by studying his books. Sastric study grants us the ability to preach, fixes our intelligence, and purifies our hearts. At this time Prabhupada also asked the devotees,"Why are we so interested in book distribution? Because it is distribution of knowledge. It is distribution of knowledge."

Srila Prabhupada QOTD : We shall not produce something artificial by writing and playing our own songs as we like

25 June, 1972

Los Angeles

My Dear Aksoja,

Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter from Amsterdam dated June 21, 1972.

I look forward with pleasure to attending some of your meetings there in Holland near end of July. Yes, the two engagements for July 28 and July 29 sound all right, and as you have kindly invited me, if you make all nice arrangements, then I shall be very glad to attend them.

One thing, you have mentioned a band for playing in the park.* If we hold public meetings, we can only hold kirtan, with our usual program of preaching being the main feature of attention. We shall stick only to the Vaisnava standard set for us by the great acaryas and saintly persons, namely, the Hare Krishna Mantra and other mantras which I have taught to you, but we shall not produce something artificial by writing and playing our own songs as we like.

Also, as you have requested, I shall be very much pleased to install Lord Jagannatha in the temple on the Sunday, 30th July, before continuing onwards.

Hoping this will meet you in good health,

Your ever well wisher,

Jauvana Prabhu, ACBSP : 1008 Down

Sometimes in life we're forced into situations or duties that we would prefer to avoid. Actually, this is more common than most of us care to admit. We are masters at self deception and internal fraud which find expression in various acts and misadventures .

But the hand of Krishna is on everyone, especially on one who attempts to pay some attention to Krishna, however imperfectly. That was shown to me recently when i went down to Florida, first to see, and then to perform the funeral rites for my uncle. When i made the booking one evening for my flight to Miami, my uncle was in the hospital. By the time i landed the next afternoon, he had died. Naturally i felt not just sad, but uncomfortable. But i was comforted by a couple of very trivial things that reminded me how Krishna is always present under all circumstances.

First, the record locator or confirmation code for my ticket to Miami was a series of letters that started with OM. I thought that was cool. And when i got to Miami, i took a short train ride from the airport to Ft. Lauderdale, about 25 miles north. After i sat down on the train with my carry on luggage i looked up and noticed the number of the train car i was riding in (bogey number they call it in India). It was 1008. Certainly auspicious, i thought. Later i realized that i had used that same number: one zero zero eight, in the intro to my song, Jivatma Express. "One Zero Zero Eight Down is now leaving from platform number"....a voice over says in English and Hindi as the music starts. So there i was, riding on my own 1008 Down, presiding over a funeral!

So no matter what life throws at us, and it definitely throws all kinds of curve balls, if we can only remember that the sweet Lord is the real controller, the real pitcher, He shows us his presence in all kinds of interesting ways.

Somehow or other, by hook or by crook as the expression goes, always remember Krishna. And never forget Him. This is one of the essential sutras left to us by our beloved guru and eternal well-wishing friend, Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada QOTD : My dear Mr. President:

Wednesday, 28 June, 1972

Los Angeles

The President
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20025

My dear Mr. President:

Several thousand years ago a great pious emperor ruled over this planet. He was a descendant of the great Kuru dynasty and the grandson of Arjuna, the hero of the Bhagavad-gita and the personal associate of the Lord, Sri Krishna. The people lived under his domain in peace. He provided protection for the people and the cows, as well as all other living entities.

He engaged many brahmanas, spiritual leaders, to educate his people and advise him in all matters. The people were just and God-conscious. They had a good understanding of the meaning and purpose of life and lived in happiness and prosperity. They respected their emperor and received kindness and benedictions from him.

You are a great president of a great nation. In this age of unrest and quarrel, your strength, as well as the strength of your nation, will be lasting if it is built upon the pillars of spiritual knowledge and Absolute Truth.

I am seventy-six years of age and am in the renounced order of life. I came to this country from India six years ago to introduce Krishna Consciousness, the scientific process of spiritual life, to the English-speaking people of the Western world. Now by the grace of Krishna I have many thousands of disciples, young American and European boys and girls.

Many of them have come to me bewildered, rebellious, and addicted to all sorts of sinful activities. Like so many of the young people today, they were lost and confused. Now they are all leading a disciplined and regulated life. They follow strict principles of spiritual life, with no desire for intoxication of any kind, or illicit sex life.

They are always engaged in meaningful work, serving God and their fellow man. They have become the flower of your country and all over the world they are being treated with the highest respect.

I would humbly like to request an interview with you to discuss the possibilities of my providing further service. My disciple, Atreya Rsi das (Mr. Marz Attar of Arthur Young and Company, 277 Park Avenue, New York, N. Y., phone 212-922-5957) will assist your aides to arrange a suitable time and place for a meeting.

I hope this meets you in best of health.

What he didn't mention is that just a couple of days ago he was hit with shrapnel from an IED, which is a roadside explosion for the uninitiated. Being the humble vaishnava that he is he didn't mention anything about it, this is the 26th time this has happened, if anybody thinks they have a difficult life just imagine what it is like being a soldier in Iraq and trying to be Krishna conscious.

He is an inspiration to all of us.

I also wanted to sincerely thank him for his generous donation of $1,000 to Iskcon Student Association of Stanford.

New Vrndavan, USA : Caring for Tulasi Devi

There are about 30 Tulasi Devis at New Vrindaban. Those who have cared for Tulasi know that actually she cares for us. She calls us, she teaches us, Silently yet profoundly.

Lokadrsti devi came to the movement in 1973 and by 1974 she was asked to care for Tulasi devi. It seemed that Tulasi would call her wherever she was. When Lokadrsti moved to New Vrindaban, whenever anyone encountered problems with Tulasi, they would call her to ask her advice.

At one point, Jai Sri devi asked her where was a suitable room for all the Tulasis. Lokadrsti thought the room on the third floor of the temple was the most suitable because it had so many windows. At this point in time she felt she could not turn her back on Tulasi. This was in 1995 and so Lokadrsti funded the remodeling of the 3rd floor with proper lights, etc.

Traditionally, Tulasi is brought to her outside “home”, a screened in house in the back parking lot by the temple. This year, the roof was falling in and so again Lokadrsti funded the repairs to this house. Vyasasana das, a carpenter by trade, bought wood, nails and new screen and fixed her house in 3 days so she could move outside and enjoy real sunshine for the summer season.

Thank you Lokadrsti devi and Vyasasana P. for providing nice “shelter” for Tulasi Devi so the rest of us can receive the “shelter” of the dust of her feet. All glories to Tulasi Devi.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Seeing Krishna Everywhere

“For one who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to Me.

“PURPORT

“A person in Krsna consciousness certainly sees Lord Krsna everywhere, and he sees everything in Krsna. Such a person may appear to see all separate manifestations of the material nature, but in each and every instance he is conscious of Krsna, knowing that everything is a manifestation of Krsna’s energy. Nothing can exist without Krsna, and Krsna is the Lord of everything — this is the basic principle of Krsna consciousness. Krsna consciousness is the development of love of Krsna — a position transcendental even to material liberation.”

Bg 6.30

Why don’t we see Krishna everywhere? Take the test in this video to find out why (fully realized souls, go ahead and skip this exercise).

This is, FYI, the first time I ever posted a video, which proves old dogs CAN learn new tricks. I usually avoid videos because they take so long to load on my dialup, but this is worth doing even if you have a dial up connection.

If you want to know why this phenomenon works as it does, go to this website. We are so busy  consuming and gratifying our senses.

Dandavats.com : Humble question for Pujaris

Satya d.d.: The subject matter is (possible)uniform standard for EATING in TEMPLE ROOM; while altar is OPEN. In this instance, for CHILDREN AND BABIES, being surprisingly common occurrence. .Is there is such a thing as a RULE, SASTRIC suggestion or at least tradition in the matter?

Sita-pati dasa : Standards and Communication

I had a nice conversation with my god brother Tri-yuga this morning.

I filed the following quip in my "wisdom to live by" filing cabinet:

Standards are good and should be enforced

and..

Communication works best when people feel understood and cared for

H.H. Mukunda Goswami : The Greatest Gift

In one sense, Srila Prabhupada’s greatest gift was to teach the principle of yukta vairagya as enunciated by Rupa Goswami:

anasaktasya visayan yatharham upayunjatah
nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe yuktam vairagyam ucyate
