This essay addresses some important philosophical aspects about the meaning and nature of a text. Specifically, it focuses on the ontology of the printed word and the effect that the scholarly convention of annotation has had on the life, culture, and society of the West. Because this essay was written in response to a demand from some important quarters of ISKCON that Srila Prabhupada’s books be annotated, the research in this essay has been used to try to understand better what are annotations and what effects they are likely to have on Srila Prabhupada’s authority, the spiritual development of the reader, and the future of ISKCON.

We have seen that material nature is everywhere, even in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
“Home, country, family, society, wealth and all sorts of corollaries are all causes of bondage in the material world, where the threefold miseries of life are concomitant factors.”
SB 1.10.11-12
“Passion and ignorance increase the material propensities of hankering for material enjoyment, and a strong sense of lust provokes the accumulation of wealth and power.”
SB 1.13.54
“In this verse the word mahodayodayat indicates that by the blessings of a great soul one becomes materially opulent, but when one gives up attachment to material wealth, that should be considered an even greater blessing from the great souls.”
SB 4.13.47
I have noted frequently in the past that while renunciation is considered an opulence (along with wealth, knowledge, strength, beauty and fame), it is often most glorified when wealth is not an option. This definitely happened in early New Vrindaban, and probably most of ISKCON, where Kirtanananda was so austere and amongst the brahmacaries being austere was a badge of honor.
Of course, there wasn’t much money around so renunciation was pretty much a necessity, and once the blood, sweat and tears of the Palace building period in the 1970s was over and the paradigm shifted to availability of wealth, most capitulated easily to its allure.
There was one brahmacari who used to routinely denigrate the householders for our material attachments when we lived in a small single cramped room along with our children. That room was one of 16 with other householders that shared a single set of unisex bathrooms and no kitchen. The rooms were in corridors on the second floor of the barn at Bahulaban. We shared the building with cows. The rooms are still there, go check them out.
Now that (former) brahmacari lives in a single family dwelling that exceeds in size the totality of all the householders’ rooms he used to disrespect.
Renunciation by necessity is not true renunciation. The real test is when wealth becomes available — can one stay aloof and not become attached to the power that comes from access to resources, to put Krishna’s interest and the interest of whole community of devotees ahead of one’s own personal ambition and desire for adoration and distinction.
Can one look at the long term broad picture or simply be caught up in how immediate expediencies effect one’s personal career and make short term decisions simply to avoid hassles.
I hope we can learn from the mistakes of the past and not let wealth destroy what vestige of community remains.

This year we're pulling out all the stops and making it a weekend long celebration filled with: soul-stirring kirtans, incredibly insightful discourses, devotional dances and the unveiling of a brand new drama written and directed by HH Bhaktimarga Swami!by madhavi (noreply@blogger.com) at August 22, 2008 08:28 AM

The following is from Srila Prabhupada’s conversion with the Canadian Ambassador to Iran on March 13, 1975.
“Prabhupada: And Caitanya Mahaprabhu gives very shortcut formula that “You sit together, chant Hare Krsna, and everything will be solved.” Very simple thing: “Sit together and chant Hare Krsna.” That also they will not do. There is no loss. Let us make an experiment — that also we are not executing. What is the loss? If we sit together and chant Hare Krsna we are not losing anything. If there is some gain, why not make an experiment? So if you propose this to the United Nation, he’ll think of me, “A crazy fellow.”
Ambassador: Like we did together in Delhi.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes. You have seen it. They were very much eager. They were very much eager: “Swamiji continue.” And the others, like Communist and others, they became upset. I have seen many big, big officers. They were chanting, returning from the office in the office dress, and they were chanting and dancing. And you have seen the crowd, twenty thousand, thirty thousand people. The same thing happened in Calcutta. Now the government did not give us again that land. Yes. Last time when we held that conference in Delhi…
Paramahamsa: On the LIC Grounds?
Prabhupada: No, no, no. They gave us that Tal Kotara Park, you know? That is in the jungle. Nobody could reach there, and they gave us place there. (Ambassador laughs) Still, there were not less ten thousand people. It was not easily approachable. The motorcar cannot go. You have to leave your car three miles away to come there.
Ambassador: I know the place.
Prabhupada: Yes. You know very well. You are (were?) in Delhi.
Ambassador: It is a difficult thing to get to.
Prabhupada: Yes. And they gave us place. At the last moment they rejected. First of all they gave. Then, at the last moment, the municipality said, “No, this land cannot be given to any religious function.” Rejected. And offered, “If you like, you can take this place.” So we had no other alternative to accept it. We advertised that “We are going to hold this ceremony,” and the authority rejected at the eleventh hour and offered the Tal Kotara place. We had to accept it. And the government indirectly giving us so many hindrances in India. Yes. They do not like. One of the important member of the cabinet, he frankly said that “We do not want that your movement will increase very fast in India.” Because they know it, Indira Gandhi and company, that India is naturally inclined to Krsna. And if the selected people of the world, combined together, they push this movement in India, then the whole program of the modern leaders will collapse. That’s a fact. And that was my idea. I wanted to start this movement from India. But nobody cooperated. So then I decided to come to America. And my plan was successful.

It is very important to chant all 16 rounds very nicely but qualitatively. Quality is a very important factor in terms of Japa. Prabhupada says that quality is not cheap but it does not mean that we should not strive for quality chanting. This weekend I am in Sydney, and Sunday is Janmastami.
His Holiness Janananda Goswami is in town, and the word is that he is leading harinam in the city on Saturday, starting at Govindas at 11 am.
Call the temple on 3379-5455 to confirm this.
Haribol!

Day 1, Wednesday, 13/08/08
Rakesh, Tamal Krsna and I arrived at the airport in good time. Tamal Krsna had kindly let me have the garland he had made for Gurudev for vyasapuja, to offer to Him when we received Him at the airport. As I peeked through the motion-sensor doors, I caught a glimpse of Gurudev! I noticed that He was accompanied by Saksi Gopal and his little son, so I didn’t have to agitate the security personnel by going inside myself. I asked Tamal Krsna to garland Gurudev, and he gratefully accepted. We both offered our respectful obeisances to Gurudev and walked with Him through the terminal. As I wheeled the trolley, Rakesh Prabhu joined us, offering Gurudev a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Gurudev spoke to Tamal Krsna about his family as we walked. He told Gurudev that, by my encouragement, the children had managed to begin chanting a round every day. I felt my head swelling with pride, “Yes. I had to get on their case a bit.” Gurudev must possess a built-in radar to sense such things because He said, “We shouldn’t be too heavy with children. There must be some sort of motivation- some privilege or favour to encourage them.”
As we drove, Gurudev asked about the welfare of Rakesh Prabhu’s family. There was to be a program at Yauvan’s house later that afternoon. There have been extensive renovations going on in Gurudev’s room ever since He left Durban earlier this month. Although the team of devotees who have worked on this project laboured tirelessly, it couldn’t be ready on time for Gurudev to stay there. So, it was decided that it would be offered to Gurudev as a “vyasapuja gift” the next day. So, we decided to go straight to Bhakta Yauvan’s home.
After Gurudev had been warmly received and seated, He was offered prasadam. He said that He would prefer to take a shower first. Bhakti Nilaya, a well-wisher and great servant of Gurudev, quickly arranged bathing facilities. Whilst Gurudev took a bath, His prasadam was re-heated.
Bhakti Nilaya and I served Gurudev His lunch, and I’m happy to report that He ate very heartily. Several preps were offered to Him and He enjoyed them all. Indeed, He likes Shaarda’s cooking a lot. Bhakti Nilaya had made a soup. Mukesh had even chipped in by making a few chutneys! Bhakti Nilaya gave Gurudev an update of the goings on in the South African Yatra. He mentioned about his preaching in Stanger. He said a member from another Vaisnava society had tried to promote their program at our nama hatta, and Bhakti Nilaya had challenged him. Gurudev felt that since most members of the congregation are very innocent, they may fall prey to the advances some new group.
Gurudev then adjourned to the lounge, where He chanted japa. After a while Gurudev went out onto the balcony and chanted there. When I approached Him with some mail that I had carried from Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath for Him to read, I asked Him if there was anything else He wanted. He said that He wanted a cool drink. After I had served Him this, I also chanted my japa. Some well-wishers came to see Gurudev and brought Him some presents also.
We were then ready to begin the program, and were discussing what sound to use. Gurudev was unhappy with the system they had arranged, and suggested that we use His system instead. This proved very effective.
The program began with Guru puja to Srila Gurudev, and then a kirtan. Gurudev then spoke from the 9th Canto, about Ambarisa Maharaj and Durvasa Muni.
Being completely devoid of the desire for self-praise, Gurudev said, ” Welcome to this important occasion - the 16th birthday party of Yauvan.”
After class, Gurudev spoke to the guests and those who sought His darshan. Mukesh Prabhu then drove Gurudev to Krsna Prema’s home. She was overjoyed to have Gurudev stay over, and welcomed Him warmly. After Gurudev had been settled in, Krsna Prema told Him that she had a surprise for Him the next morning. “No breakfast.” , said Gurudev. Krsna Prema assured Him that that wasn’t the “surprise”.
After I had set His bed, and got a set of cloth out for the next day, I left the room. Gurudev told me that the program a Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath would only begin after 9am, so He would not be in any haste to get up very early the next day. I acknowledged that I understood this and bade His well. It was after 22h00.
Day 2, Thursday, 14/08/08
The most glorious event…
Gurudev came out of His room at around 6am. Knowing that it would be an action-packed day, He had made certain that He was well rested. I had heard Gurudev take His set of cloth off the door-handle, and was waiting outside His room when He came out. Thus, by some extraordinarily great fortune, I got to have Gurudev’s darshan first on that most auspicious day!
I chanted a little kirtan in glorification of Gurudev as I ushered Him downstairs. Krsna Prema and Rohininandan had decorated their lounge very tastefully to create a festive mood. Gurudev was especially pleased with the large poster that Rohininandan had made.
We all wished Gurudev a Happy Vyasapuja, and then watched Him as He worshiped Giriraj. Gurudev offered the bhoga that Krsna Prema had prepared and also called for the fruit basket that had been sent by Mukesh’s family to be offered to Giriraj. Gurudev then settled back in His seat and chanted Gayatri.
Many visitors, in the form of devotees who lived in the area, came to pay their respects. The devotees arranged a mini-vyasapuja, right then and there. This included footbathing by Rohininandan and I, whilst Ishkaar sang a sweet kirtan. Rohininandan then offered Gurupuja to Gurudev. Gurudev was offered a “birthday cake” which comprised of six cupcakes with multi-coloured icing. After Gurudev had blown out His single candle and taken a bite, He said, “Now, it may just be a co-incidence, but there are six cakes and six of you!” (He was indicating His desire that we share the cakes amongst ourselves! The mood was very sweet and intimate… Gurudev was clearly touched by the genuine love this family has for Him. I was looking on in complete astonishment, thinking how blessed Krsna Prema is! At last, I could understand what her “surprise” was…
I had been in contact with organizers, to confirm exactly what time Gurudev should be at Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath Mandir. The initial time was given as 09h00, but they later changed it to 09h30, giving us all some breathing space.
Whilst Gurudev chanted japa, I packed His bags and loaded them into the car. When the appointed time came, Rohininandan drove Gurudev to Chatsworth. Krsna Prema was practically begging Gurudev to stay over another night at her asram, and Gurudev explained that He had to go back to Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath, and leave from there to the airport.
As per our previous arrangement, I phoned the chief organizer, as well as a devotee policeman when we passed a certain bridge. I was repeatedly looking to see where the devotee was when we saw a squad car zoom past us, lights flashing. As we approached the temple, another police-van zipped in ahead of us. With sirens wailing and lights flashing, this convoy entered the temple premises carrying our beloved spiritual master.
Mayapur Candra was leading a big kirtan, accompanied by at least 60 - 80 devotees, as they escorted Gurudev’s car around the carpark, before stopping at the main archway of the mandir. Gurudev was helped out of the car and warmly welcomed by Haridev Prabhu. Several devotees garlanded Gurudev. Gurudev was then lead into the temple-room, where He offered a garland to Srila Prabhupada. Gurudev then performed Guru-puja to Srila Prabhupada, whilst Govardhana Prabhu lead kirtan. Gurudev was then taken down to have darshan of Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath in Their temporary quarters. (The altar at Sri Sri Radha-Radhanath is currently undergoing a renovation.) Gurudev presented the Deities with a special gift each, before receiving a maha-garland from Srimati Radharani’s hand.
We then escorted Gurudev to His newly-renovated room. (Several devotees had worked very hard for many days to make this “gift” a reality.) I can say with firm conviction that the expression on Gurudev’s face as He cut the official ribbon that was draped across His door, unveiled His personalized name-plate and got His first “darshan” of His new room was certainly more rewarding than anybody’s greatest expectations. In truth, He was greatly pleased. As Deva Deva Prabhu and Haridev Prabhu gave Him an official “tour”, Gurudev’s smile grew exponentially. As I looked at the devotees’ happy faces, I could see that it had worked out well, after all that hard work.
The devotees were then asked to clear the room, since Gurudev wanted to change. In the meantime, I had got Rohininandan to help me unload Gurudev’s bags and bring them to His room. After Gurudev had put on His new set of cloth, He was escorted into a large marquee set up for this grand event. The marquee was about half-full, and as the program carried on, it filled to capacity.
Gurudev first went around garlanding the senior devotees personally. After Gurudev had taken His seat on His vyasasana, Govardhana Prabhu welcomed everybody and explained the program for the day.
Firstly, various senior devotees read their offerings in glorification of Gurudev. Gurudev then read His 2007 offering to Srila Prabhupada. There was then a foot-bathing ceremony of Gurudev’s lotus feet, expertly managed by Mayapur Candra Prabhu. The mood was very festive and light-hearted. There was then a Guru-puja to Srila Gurudev, offered by Syamasundar Prabhu. Gurudev then delivered His address. He thanked all those that had spoken such kind words about Him. Then He said something very typical, “Again, thank you all so much for participating in this program and expressing yourselves. That is really the thing. Even though only a few of you have said something as such, but still just your presence is an expression, and I really appreciate it so much.”
How much Gurudev appreciates even the smallest contribution from any Vaisnava…
After the address, there was bhoga offering. All 528 preparations! Gurudev’s eyes widened when He heard that figure! As usual, the devotees brought in the different offerings for Gurudev to honour, and He had just a portion of a teaspoon of each item. Then, to the great joy of the devotees, Gurudev started distributing His remnants! There were smiling faces everywhere. Whenever Gurudev would come across a particularly delicious preparation, His eyes would widen. This was a cue for the prasadam-relishers, who competed with one another to get the mercy!
After Gurudev had honoured the bhoga, I washed His hands and mouth. Prabhupada Priya Prabhu collected up that water and explained to me his plan to relish it in a secluded place! I was unsuccessful in my attempt to salvage some for myself…
Gurudev was then escorted down to His room, where He wanted to take a shower.
When He got there, however, we were told that the room wasn’t fully ready, and some work was still being done on the shower. The devotees, who had been working extremely hard (sometimes without rest) were sad and felt that Gurudev was disappointed in them. Being the sensitive, loving father that He is, He reassured them that it was alright. Gurudev decided that He would go to Krsna Prema’s home, and travel from there to the evening program at New Jaganath Puri. Haridev phoned her and made the necessary arrangements. Damodara Caran was given the privilege of driving Gurudev to Krsna Prema’s home. In the meantime, Gurudev and I worked on packing His bags. Bhakta Visnu and Bhaktin Shama had bought a traveling bag for Gurudev, and it came in very handy.
I was having great difficulty in finding enough darker, freshly-dyed cloth for Gurudev to take since the devotee who promised to buy the dye never did. Still, I managed to assemble 3 relatively good sets. Once we had everything together, we left for Krsna Prema’s. As is His custom, Gurudev asked Damodara Caran about the welfare of his family as we drove along.
When we arrived at Krsna Prema’s, and Gurudev got out of the car, I looked Krsna Prema straight in the face and playfully wagged my finger at her. She could read my friendly intention and said, “Krsna fulfilled my desire!” Gurudev smiled and apologized for being an inconvenience. Such is His humility…
Whilst Gurudev took a shower, Krsna Prema ironed His new set of cloth for the program. As Gurudev sat in the lounge chanting, He paused to discuss with me the best way to pack His bags for the trip to Mauritius the next morning. He decided that He could travel much lighter than we had previously thought, and that some of the items that were meant for use in Russia didn’t have to be carried. These, Gurudev said, could be carried by somebody to Johannesburg, where Gurudev would fetch them on Monday. Namacarya Prabhu kindly volunteered to carry this second bag for Gurudev. Fortunately the bag that Visnu and Shama had bought was a little bigger, and I managed to fit all of Gurudev’s things in it, as well as leave space for a box of His new DVD’s for Mauritius.
After a while, we were ready to leave. Indeed the devotees at New Jaganath Puri were waiting in great anticipation!
During the drive, Gurudev asked me for some details of the program. I was a little speculative in my answer. The Supersoul, however, prompted me to suggest that we ask the chief organizer. Gurudev thought that this was a good idea, and clarified all the details He needed to over the phone. One significant point that I should mention is that the original idea of the organizers was that the program end at 22h00, so that Gurudev could rest early to catch His very early flight the next morning. This meant that the disciples would not get to read their offerings. This, they felt, would be in Gurudev’s best interest. When Gurudev heard about this, however, He expressed His desire to hear the disciples read the offerings, “They will be disappointed. Let them read their offerings.” Although He had already made a huge sacrifice to come to Durban just so that He could be with us, although He had been inconvenienced in terms of His accommodation, although He was probably exhausted from the day’s exertions, Gurudev put the interests of His disciples first. I was thunderstruck by His level of selflessness. I have been His personal assistant for a while now, and I have seen this aspect of His personality many, many times. It still amazes me…
As we neared the New Jaganath Puri Mandir, we heard a roaring kirtan. Then we caught sight of a large group of devotees, standing practically on the road, dancing and chanting with great energy. “There’s Lokanatha!”, I exclaimed as we entered the temple property. Gurudev said, “Oh yes.” He acknowledged Lokanatha, who was leading that fantastic kirtan party. The car pulled to a halt, and Gurudev was assisted out of the car and garlanded by several well-wishers. The kirtan party lead Gurudev into the temple-room. There a huge crowd, numbering several hundred, had assembled. When that kirtan party entered the temple-room, Lokanatha took the chanting to another level. The combination of jembes, mrdangas, karatalas and whompers, plus the loud chanting of all the devotees nearly blew the roof off New Jaganath Puri! Gurudev smiled in appreciation. Gurudev garlanded Srila Prabhupada, and then walked over to offer some gifts to the Deities. We had left these in the car, and a hasty call to Damodara Caran had to be made to avoid Gurudev waiting too long. Gurudev was then escorted to a beautiful vyasasana, where He sat down. Namacarya prabhu welcomed the devotees and explained the course the program would take. Firstly there were some glorifications by various devotees. The devotees then bathed Gurudev’s lotus feet. Then there was a very affectionate address given by Srila Gurudev. There was then Guru puja offered to Gurudev, and the cutting of a huge cake.
Saksi Gopal Prabhu, who is so instrumental in assisting Gurudev with the production of His DVD’s gave a me a box of DVD’s destined for Mauritius, which I kept away safely.
The disciples were then given an opportunity to read their offerings to Gurudev. There were quite a few to go through, and we left the temple only after 23h00. There was a kirtan team that lead Gurudev’s car out of the temple property, and they practically ran to keep up with Gurudev! They kept chanting until we were out of sight…
Rohininandan drove Gurudev back to his asram, were Gurudev gave me some final instructions before retiring at the end of a very eventful and exhausting day. It was after 23h30.
Day 3, Friday, 15/08/08
Gurudev had asked me to knock at His door at 05h00, and I did that obediently. I asked Krsna Prema to iron a set of cloth for Him to use immediately, and also to iron whatever we hadn’t the night before. Krsna Prema had not been able to attend either of the programs because she had been busy cooking some offerings for Gurudev’s bhoga offering and had also baked that huge cake. Now, she was completely wiped out, but was managing to draw from her reserves to perform these last few essential services. In the meantime, I had set up for puja to Giriraj. Krsna Prema had made some “padkos” (traveling prasadam) for Gurudev, and it was decided that that could be the bhoga offering to Giriraj. Gurudev came downstairs shortly therafter, and began with puja. I left Rohininandan to assist Gurudev with puja whilst I did a final check of Gurudev’s things, packed His bags and brought them down the stairs so that we could be ready to leave as soon as He wanted to. In the meantime, Avi had arrived and was witnessing the arati. He had kindly agreed to drive Gurudev to the airport. After puja, I packed away Giriraj’s paraphernalia box, and loaded the car. At the appointed time, Gurudev took His leave and thanked Krsna Prema profusely. What a fortunate soul…
At the airport, Gurudev suggested to Avi that he circle the airport a few times, since we would only be a few minutes in the terminal. Such is His concern for others, that He would not want to put anyone through any inconvenience or extra expenditure at all…
It was nearing 06h30, as we walked through the somewhat quiet terminal. Check-in was a breeze. I took the handle of Gurudev’s hand-luggage from Him and we walked through to the boarding gates. As we walked, He gave me some final instructions as to how He wanted His drawers arranged, and things replaced when the devotees set His room up. Avi had joined us by this time, and thanked Gurudev for His association. I thanked Him for His association and kindness. Gurudev smiled graciously and thanked me also. It had been a brief visit, but the memories I will treasure forever…
All glories to H.H. Srila Bhakti Caitanya Swami!

Summer days - seasons and mellows change
Diary of a spiritual journey 21
August 21st, 2008
Sometimes it is stated that Lord Caitanya’s pastimes are still going on today and that we ourselves are part of these pastimes. Well I certainly felt like that during this (European) summer’s Ratha Yatras and other festival. In Berlin Bhakti Marg Swami made his intricate, professional, dancing movements and everyone tried to follow him with Sacinandana Swami enthusiastically taking the lead. Parama Gati Maharaja was running form left to right in front of Lord Jagannatha’s cart with an enormous smile beaming on his face the brahmacari were running after him. Maharaja was everywhere starting up a circle of dancing devotees holding hands, swinging around arm hooked in arm with Jayapataka Maharaja flying. The kirtana swept everyone up, we forgot ourselves. The onlookers on the sidewalk stared at us. Where in the world is there such a sight? Sacinandana Maharaja swirled and all the dancers jumped higher, the drums increased in crescendo, at one point everyone was as if electrified with the energy of the kirtana. Lord Jagannatha is amazing he eats fifty two times a day, there is no limit to how much service He can bring out of His devotee! Now the season is changing the summer is coming to an end Janmastami is approaching. Soon we will go to Vrndavana for Kartika. Then for me the last two months of the year will be more introspective, rising early, chanting the Holy Name in the Holy Dhama, and meditating on the Caitanya Caritamrta.
Today the journey goes on by train, plane, car from Germany to Spain for la Fiesta, the big Janmastami party. Then back to a German island with a few brahmacaris for some days, for peaceful japa, katha and meditation. In September will be again South Africa for a month, I am bound to go drawn by all the wonderful devotees. Thus I travel from one place to the next, places change, faces change, seasons change and mellows change and along we remain in the transcendental pastimes of Lord Caitanya’s movement which day by day touches more and more people around globe.
Battlefield Bhajans Vol. 20
Ali Asalim Air Base, Kuwait
Edited by Partha-sarathi Dasa
I am sitting in Kuwait at the moment, having finished fifeteen months in combat, the time I have here is a very slow pace. The operational tempo I am use to is slowing down, making more time in my life for devotional activities. We arrived at 0400 hrs and in processed. Afterwards I wanted to stay awake for the long flight. But there was a problem our plane was broken down in the States. Oh well, I thought let me go and walk around. As I walked around, I found a nice place to sit in read indoors. It was very quiet which meant I can just sit and read and not be bothered. As I sat and read I noticed some Japanese soldiers enter and start looking around. I thought well, let me talk with them, see what they need help with. I asked one and said can I help you find something. He said, yes, I am looking for God in broken english. That statement really blew my mind away, because the jiva is always looking for God in this material world. But by Maya’s potency we forget about the search. After a minute his friend said, he is looking for the chapel. Well, sit and maybe I can help you, so he sat with all his friends. One said he could translate for me because the other cannot really understand english to well. So I took out of my assault pack some small books on chanting for them. The man asked me what these books were about. I said, well your friend is searching for God, the best way to find God is by calling out His name with all your heart. To never for a minute forget Him and to render all service in your lifetime to His lotus feet. The soldier asked, so what do these books have to do with all it? These books are windows to the spiritual world. They will show you the most sublime prayer for this age, the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha mantra, which will cleanse the heart of all impurities and by chanting the Lord’s name you are receiving direct association with Him. As he translated to the others, I saw their faces light up. One boy spoke some japanese and the man said, “He wants to know if you can teach us this prayer.” Of course, so we went through word by word until they felt comfortable chanting on their own. Clapping my hands I starting chanting a simple melody, and they were into it. As we were chanting a japanese man came in and started screaming, from the tone of his voice, I could tell he was in charge and the men quickly got there stuff. The one man who was translating asked me if they could keep these books. Yes please do I replied. He tried to give some money and I refused. I asked him to promise me that when he gets back to Japan, that he will go and visit one of our temples. He agreed and ran out the door with a smile.
Stay away from the Hare Krishna’s
The day before we left we had a small BBQ of senior leaders in my unit. Kicking and screaming I attended. While there I sat in the corner and stayed to myself. My first sergeant approached me with some others, I quickly realized it was the general. I jumped up and saluted and stood there. My first sergeant introduced me and explained to him what my job is. He was smiling and said some words of encouragement. Then my first sergeant relayed a story to him about how he always tells his kids when they travel to always stay away from the Hare Krishna’s. He then said funny that now one of my sergeants in his command is a Hare Krsna. The general seemed surprised, said oh, how do you feel about Hare Krishna’s now. He said, well they are still a little weird, but I feel that they put so much effort into everything they do. The general turned to me and laughed. He started to walk away I asked him to remain for one minute. I quickly ran as fast I could to the smart box located where the lunch was being held and grabbed a Bhagavad-Gita. When I returned the general wasn’t standing there, but I saw him about to get into a vehicle. I pushed into the front of the crowd and handed him the book, to which he said thanks SGT, I know it will be good reading.
For fifteen months I have been sharing my story with others. This journal has been a way for me to deal with the harsh realties of my service. This journal has taught me many things, one being the wonderful loving exchanges between devotees, both old and new. By the Lord’s mercy this journal has given me the opportunity to receive the association of many senior disciples of Srila Prabhupada and many other wonderful devotees from all over the world. Below is a letter from Antony Prabhu. In no way did I post it to brag or boast. But I feel the love that Antony has shown me during my tour here, is a reason why I made it through, why I was given so many opportunities to preach.
Partha-sarathi prabhu,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
Brother, I must thank you. In fact, my family thanks you for being such a
true and inspiring devotee. There are not enough words in this language to
properly convey the sum of what is felt and received through your
generosity, kindness, energy and humility.
Last night as I was at my workstation, I managed to get a call off to home.
I was talking with my wife, Shyamala, for several minutes when one of my
Sgts came in carrying a box. Since he saw me on the phone, he didn’t say
anything, he just stood there hovering over my desk holding this box. It
didn’t fully register that the box was for me or he needed a place to put
it. He finally raised his eyebrows as a silent question, “Are you going to
get this?” I told him to set it down and that’s when I saw the label. I told
Shyamala that I just received a package and that I thought it was from you.
As I got close to the box, I caught a faint and distinct scent. “This smells
like a temple”, I said. Carefully I cut the tape and slowly opened the
package. The scent grew stronger and my wife asked me what was in it.
“Looking at the customs form, I think it’s cloth and books.”
I sifted through the balled up *Stars and Stripes *(the universal packing
material) and then I see Krsna’s glowing eyes looking at me. I think I said
“Oh my God!” Slowly I unveiled this treasure chest of books, magazines,
pictures, and scriptures. I was still holding onto the phone. Shyamala
finally told me to tell her what was in it, so I began like I was cataloging
a great find: The Golden Palace, Back To Godhead magazine, Rathayatra DVD,
Oil, Offering plate, Vaisnava Songbook, etc. I took pictures and immediately
emailed them back home.
I could feel the eyes of my Marines behind me as I’m sure they thought the
box was full of hand sanitizer or eye drops that I normally pass out to
them. Instead I put the Bhagavad-Gita on my desk and scanned the contents of
the box further. Shyamala was excited as well. On several occasions we talk
about getting recitations of the scriptures, one to further assist her in
Bhakti-sastri class and for me to able to listen while being far from any
temple. To receive these items really just fueled the fire of our desire to
serve. I look forward to sharing them to the fullest.
The timing of the arrival of the package couldn’t have been better. We again
have gone through a long week of attacks, incidents and accidents. Yesterday
morning, we held a memorial service at the chapel for two Marines that
passed last week. A few days ago, another one was killed and another service
will be held in the coming days. Three of four other attacks recently have
wounded more and of course, the ever present danger-prone man/woman in
uniform continues to rack up broken fingers in vehicle doors or cuts on
wire. And as you well know, the Black Flag Season of August continues to
punish with 115+ days/nights.
I share this not to lament but to rejoice. I rejoice in the fact that
despite all the variables and additives that make life and service
difficult, it only takes one, one person, one act, one gesture, to remind
you of what is really important in this world. I thank you for being that
person. I thank you on behalf of every devotee, every soldier, every woman
and man that was directly or indirectly touched or inspired by your work and
service. You are a great disciple of HH Kadamba Kanana Swami and I thank him
for being merciful and an excellent teacher to you as well.
It appears that it was not in the plan that we should meet in this country,
but this country will never be the same. Here, in Mosul, Fallujah, Baghdad,
there are devotees of Sri Krsna. And even if this message does not get to
the local populace, the vibration of chanting the Holy Name will continue to
seep into the soil and flow down the Euphrates and flow down the Tigris and
as you and Bhakta Andrew point out, back to the Ganges. So wherever you find
yourself, this continent, the next or another, please know that you have a
friend, devotee and a family that is here for you and that is ever thankful
for the fires of Krsna Consciousness you helped start or added good fuel to
so that they would grow stronger and brighter.
Before I concluded my phone call with Shyamala, she asked me to read
Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.80-81. Sudama returns home to find after visiting Krsna
and Rukmini that a wealth unknown to the demigods awaits him. You Partha,
have delivered a spiritual wealth and I pray that Srila Prabhupada continue
to guide us in the proper use of it.
Take care and stay safe Warrior, and we will do the same.
In your service
Hare Krsna

This is a recording done by Rupeswar Gauranga Prabhu at the Orlando Retreat 2008.One of the main themes my spiritual master, Srila Hridayananda Das Goswami Acharyadeva, has been speaking on is the need to intelligently expose the fallacy of some Christian dogmas. He points out the irrationality of the dogmas and how the distorted image of God they portray has led to unimaginable violence on Earth.
If you want to check it out, you can listen to several of his lectures on this subject here.
I mention this, because I had a very interesting experience in this regard last week. One of my main services is answering e-mails of the official Brazilian BBT website. People get in touch wanting to know more about KC and I help them out. So, this young lady, a very intelligent engineering student, started to study KC with my help. It turns out, however, that her boyfriend is a radical pentecostal, who was just horrified with the thought of his girlfriend reading up on other religions. She tried to explain to him that she was just studying it, not that she has decided to become a devotee, but he was very much opposed.
After a few days studying KC, she sent me an excerpt from and e-mail he had sent her (and she gave me permission to share this story here). In it, he wrote, “If I was God, I’d exterminate you…”. I was shocked! He was basically saying that God should “exterminate” her because she was studying pure devotional philosophy! Not that she’d done anything wrong, not that she’d even so much as changed her religion, but just for studying something different. And he is still her boyfriend!

It’s what my spiritual master calls, “a thought crime”. Being punished for a “thought crime”. Being sent to hell forever, for a “thought crime”. This is very, very dangerous philosophy. Truly evil. And here it was, happening right in front of me.
It just made me understand how important it is that we speak up on this, for we have to do our part to rid the world of these evil ideas, which have brought so much suffering and are still out there, causing violence and fear.

Hare Krsna!
So last night I finally got another copy of the Bhagavad-Gita, shortly
thereafter I had tower guard, so I decided to read a bit while in the tower. I
pulled the BG out of my assault pack, opened it up and began to read, when my
buddy PFC Rivard asked me what I was reading. I explained that the
Bhagavad-Gita is a song that was song by Sri Krsna to Arjuna, before the battle
between the Pandava’s and Kuru’s. He very simply replied, “Huh?”
So I explained a bit further and asked, “Would you like me to read a bit to
you?”
”Yes, please.” He replied.
So, I began thumbing through to find a good start. Why not the beginning,
I thought to myself. I went to the preface and began reading aloud, pausing
occasionally to explain. We ended up reading the entire preface, introduction
and 1st chapter of the Bhagavad-Gita including all Sanskrit readings, during
the 4 hour guard shift.
Today during our shift, one of PFC Rivard’s friends came up to the tower to
talk and hang out for a bit. Rivard mentioned to him that we had been reading
the Bhagavad-Gita and he also became instantly interested. He asked me to give
a lesson from the BG.
A bit nervously I thought “What text would be most suitable for the
situation at hand?”
I opened the Bhagavad-Gita and looked at the bottom of page 346:
Bhagavad-Gita, Chapter 7, Text 18
Udara sarva evaite jnani tv atmaiva me matam
asthitahsa hi yuktatma mam evanuttamam gatim
All of these devotees are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he
who is situated in knowledge of me I consider to be just like My
own self. Being engaged in My transcendental service, he is sure to
attain Me, the highest and most perfect goal.
I read this scripture with the purport for the 2 young Soldiers, while they
listened and stared very attentively. After explaining the purport, I went
back to the Introduction and explained the 5 ways a person can be a Devotee,
especially focusing on how anyone can be a passive Devotee. They smiled in
amazement and I believe that they both gained something out of it.
Krishna works in incredible ways. The first 2 services in Sadr City were
completely spontaneous. Chapter 7, Text 8, was the best possible scripture I
could have opened the BG to. I didn’t even think about choosing a different
Text to read.
After my shift, I went to the chow hall and ran into the Chaplain. I asked
him if I could use the Chapel for an hour a week for BG classes and Krsna
Concious services. He agreed happily.
Sadr City is about to be glowing in Krsna consciousness.
I hope that all is well with you, brother. Please, please, please keep
Battlefield Bhajan’s up. I think that it is a good outreach and outlet. Thank
you for all that you have done in the service of Srila Prabhupada.
YS,
Andrew

By the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, a 2 day Kids “Day” Camp was made possible over the last weekend (Fri, Sat & sun morning). About 25 kids from ages 5 through 14 participated in this camp (5 kids from New Vrindaban and about 20 kids from nearby cities.Highlights of the camp were:
1. the tours given by Tapah punj prabhu in the organic garden and the opportunity the kids got to work with land
2. the stories told by Sankirtan prabhu
3. the musical performances by Krpamaya prabhu
4. the cow milking session by Jaya Prabhupada prabhu
Along with the above activities the kids enjoyed playing Krsna conscious games in the island and participated in the arti, Abhishek for lord Balaram, fun in the pool etc. One of the special events was the harinam sankirtan to the palace via “Gajendra the elephant” and :gaur nitai statues”. All the kids loved being in Srila Prabhupada’s palace and the culmination was the ecstatic kirtan in the samadhi room.
This was only possible by the blessings and guidance of all the senior vaisnavas. New Vrindavan’s wealth is the senior vaisnavas who have rich experiences in various areas and the kids were fortunate to receive their blessings by hearing from them and being with them.
All the children were so happy and excited that they did not want to go home.
We want to thank all the devotees who made it possible:
Malati prabhu and the GBC team for special tips, guidance and safety measures
Tapah punj prabhu for giving garden tours and ride to the children
Sankirtan prabhu for telling wonderful stories
Krpamaya prabhu for musical performances
Tejo maya prabhu, Chaitanya bhagavat prabhu and Jagganath Misra prabhu for setting up the pool
Nityodita prabhu, Rupanuga prabhu and Jayasri mataji for constant support and encouragement
Shanka prabhu and premabhakti prabhu for making tasty prasadam - In fact please note that this was a busy weekend. And along with all the other cooking services the cooks were excited and happy to prepare delicious prasadam for the kids. One of the kids Jagadish said, “This was the best prasadam I ever had in my life.
Dharmakala mataji for making burgers, cakes and brownies - the kids loved it.
Lalita gopi mataji for helping in snacks, cooking lasagna. Helping with taking care of the kids during the camp.
Ramlila mataji for organizing activities for the children
Jaya prabhupada prabhu for cow barn tours and milking
Shankarananda prabhu, Govinda priya mataji, laxman prabhu, Vijay reddy prabhu for clean up
Prasanna mataji for prasadam serve out
Atmarama prabhu, Sarita mataji, Gokul priya mataji, laxmi mataji for cooking various items
Annapurna mataji, Manisha mataji, Kamal gopi mataji, Anu mataji, Gokulpriya mataji, pujita mataji, Gopal prabhu for being the care takers of the kids during the camp
Sriram prabhu for co-ordinating games
And all those devotees whose name is not in the list but helped with the camp. Please forgive us for missing out any devotee unknowingly.
In short this was a wonderful weekend because it brought joy to the children and brought so many devotees together in the service of Srila Prabhupada.
We learnt many lessons on how we can improve the quality of such an offering to the children.

O Protector of Devotees, whose beautiful lotus feet are an impenetrable fortress, I am not afraid when I take shelter in Your shadow. When destructive things land around me, it is You that provides the greatest protection.
O Lord, I was both lost and fallen in the dust. But through Your mercy and kindness I have regained consciousness and I am now returning back to You.
O Quencher of thirst, O cool and gentle breeze that casts away the fierce winds of the desert. I sing Your Holy Names and fight for the freedom to serve you.
Although I am far from home, I am never outside the reach of Your loving arms and my enemies are never outside the range of Your arrows.
Although I am in a distant and foreign land, there is no place that is unfamiliar to You. You, who does not need a scope to survey the landscape, knows the place of every hill, valley and rock pile.
O Lord of the Heavens and Earth, to whom a thunderclap is barely a whisper, a raging inferno is barely a dying ember, I pray for the strength to serve in Your command and execute Your orders.
O He who makes a lotus blossom deadly to demons, You are The Greatest of Companions in battle. You do not tire, You do not trip. You do not lose your direction. Your aim is always exact. You do not retreat. You do not spread Your formation too thin. You do not get homesick.
When thick smoke engulfs the battlefield, You do not choke.
When heavy dust shrouds the landscape, Your Lotus Eyes do not sting.
O Lord, Your transcendental conch shell is the greatest of war horns. You are so full of compassion that You uplift your enemies as well as your devotees.
O Lord, my feet are blistered twice over. My knees creak with every step. The fibers of my hamstrings are tightened and pulling. My back and shoulders are bent and chaffed from the pack I carry. My hands are calloused and losing feeling from the tight grip I keep on my weapon. My arms ache, my lips are chapped and dry riverbeds of sweat leave salt trails down my face. Dust cakes my eyelashes and brows. My helmet-strap cuts into my chin. I taste gritty sand when I swallow.
I smile.
Because even though my voice is hoarse I have not stopped chanting Your Holy Names.

Our annual Sacred Sounds program was out of this world. We were honored with many special guests, friends and family from all around the East coast. People drove from Detroit, New York, Philly, North Carolina and of course all around the DC Metro area.
Thank you to all that came, you are what made this the event that it was.
We recently obtained a small digital recorder which we used to record kirtan and lectures at Sacred Sounds. We have some video too that we’ll put up one of these days.

By Jagabandhu DasaVaishnavas can also worship all these demigods (Brahma, Shiva, Durga, Ganesh and Surya), but only on the principles of Brahma-samhita, which is recommended by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Whether great devotee or direct incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, there is no denying the potency of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. More than 500 years after his appearance in Bengal, India, his instruction to loudly chant the Holy Names of the Lord is being carried out around the world.
Param vijayate sri krishna sankirtanam!
“The dharma preached by Caitanya Mahaprabhu is universal and not exclusive … The principle of kirtan as the future church of the world invites all classes of men, without distinction of caste or clan, to the highest cultivation of the spirit. This church, it appears, will spread worldwide and replace all sectarian churches, which exclude outsiders from the precincts of the mosque, church, or temple.”
