Japa Group : Chant 16 Rounds

From all regulatives principles, the chanting of 16 rounds a day is the most important. This is the faith Srila Prabhupada always had in the Holy names. He revealed that if a devotee chants he will definitely follow all the other principles.
Listening to a lecture from my Gurudev yesterday given this month in a Japa Retreat in Georgia, he was talking about this faith that Srila Prabhupada had in the Holy names and how he wanted everyone to chant the maha mantra. He used to be so strict to devotees having to chant their 16 rounds and said once that if this was not followed it meant they were committing offense towards the spiritual master by not folowing his orders.
Another thing my gurudev commented was about the offenses and how difficult is sometimes to avoid them. There was a word that I can't forget from his preaching, that we should at least try - this attempt to follow our spiritual master's instructions pleases the Lord and when Krsna is pleased everything happens.
The Lord promises to make the word of his pure devotee happen so it's so true that if we chant 16 rounds and follow the regulative principles we will go back home, back to Godhead, just because that's what our Founder Acharya promised and that's what will happen by the Lord's mercy. This is the power of the maha mantra, it can turn our fallen existance into a blissful life of nonstop devotional service to Krsna.

Syamesvari dd : Whats in your pantry?

I always imagined that when I got married, I would be one of those women who effortlessly threw together fabulous meals at the drop of a hat, without breaking a sweat (kinda like how Sabjimata did just the other day...http://sabjimatajam.blogspot.com/2008/09/spread.html) But alas, so far NOT so good.

I've decided that creativity is not the problem, but lack of resources (and laziness to correct the lacking state of resources) is. When recipes call for certain ingredients that I do not possess, I toss it aside and look for something more Syamesvari's-pantry-friendly. It almost never happens. If I'm super inspired (or forced) to cook something that calls for ingredients I don't have, I'll make the effort to get it, buy just enough for the recipe and feel rather drained after all that effort (Yes, I'm lazy - but we've already established that, haven't we?)

Divine intervention has provided me with a list entitled "The Very Basic Pantry" in the Vegetarian Times. Compared to this, my pantry is sorely lacking. Anyhoo, all thats about to be changed. We buy fabulous, organic vegetables at the St Jacobs Market and its about time I did justice to them. And it all begins with a well-stocked pantry:

1. Whole grain breads such as sandwich and artisan breads, tortillas

2. Rice - brown rice, basmati rice, wild rice, jasmine rice

3. Whole grains - barley, bulgur, quinoa, millet, rolled oats

4. Pasta, preferably whole grains

5. Whole grain flours - whole wheat flour, whole wheat pastry flour and other favourites

6. Unbleached all-purpose flour

7. Legumes - Kidney beans, black beans, cannellini beans, chickpeas, lentils and other favourites

8. Condiments - Soy sauce, Tahini sauce, dark sesame oil, peanut oil

9. Sweeteners - Honey, granulated sugar cane juice, confectioners sugar, brown sugar

10. Vanilla, almond and lemon extracts

11. Baking soda

12. Baking powder

13. Arrowroot, cornstarch or other thickeners

14. Vegetable oils - olive and canola

15. Salt - sea salt, black salt

16. Peppercorns - whole for freshly ground pepper

17. Herbs and spices - thyme, marjoram, parsley, cinnamon, bay leaves

I doubt that I'll use some of these things - like granulated sugar cane juice, and millet and barley - so I may hold off on those items; but there are few additions of my own that I'd make to this list:

- Buckwheat flour

- Buckwheat noodles

- Indian spices - jeera, garam masala, ground coriander, hing etc

- Semolina

- Sun dried Tomatoes

That's all I can think of for now...hope this helps any other new bumbling wives out there :)

Feel free to make any additions...especially if you have more experience in the kitchen than I do (which pretty much means anyone;)

Bhakta Chris, New Vrndavan, USA : I need a laptop.....

What is this? A so-called brahmacari asking for a laptop?

Indeed, your senses do not deceive you.

Since this is the 21st Century, some of my services (such as the Club 108 blog and the "Simple Living, High Thinking" newsletter) require that I use a computer.

Since the computer I was using here at New Vrindaban died a tragic and mysterious death a few months ago, I am without a consistent bag of chips and bits that I can call my own, and whether it's here at NV or wherever else I may go, I have to wait and sometimes even compete to use the available computers. I know, the shame...

So, I'm not hoping for a personal laptop to just space out. That is there, but also it will help me continue my sincere efforts to network and strengthen our communities of devotees worldwide.

As a struggling brahmacari, I am also without finances. My options are traditional here. I am asking and even begging for someone very merciful to either sponsor a laptop for me (such as this one or this one or this one or even this one), or donate one that they no longer have use for.

Help a brother out! Contact me by e-mail at cfici26@yahoo.com, or nvclub108@gmail.com.

Hari Sauri das, Mayapura, IN : Q&A - wars of this world

September 28 2008

war

This history of this world, and especially in Kali-yuga is war. There is always some war going on somewhere. If we are fortunate we may escape its withering shadow–or not. Even if we do, are we any better off?

How do devotees view war and how do they deal with it?

Here’s a fairly frequently asked question from Samatma Gour das in the CIS:

“Did Shrila Prabhupada ever speak of possible global military conflicts and cataclysms etc. What were his recommendations to the devotees, if any, in relation to this? Thank you in advance and special thanks for your Transcendental Diary!”

Answer:

Among the many smaller wars-civil wars, cold wars, hot wars, holy wars-that are always going on, the last century saw two ‘world wars’.

ww1      ww2

With the development of atomic and nuclear capabilites, its easy to think in apocalyptic terms

atom omb    end of the world

With the A-bomb it seemed that for the first time in history man had the capability of destroying the whole planet.

Srila Prabhupada did speak about a possible third world war and there are several conversations from 1974 on this, as well as some letters. You can read the conversation from May 27, 1974 in Rome.

The talk of a possible war sparked some speculation among the devotees and some wrote to Srila Prabhupada because they were concerned about the future. Here are some replies Srila Prabhupada made:

Letter to: Makhanlal — 22 June, 1973

“You have asked about whether nuclear devastation on this planet would effect the Sankirtana Movement. No, there is nothing that can stop the Sankirtana Movement because it is the will of God Himself, Lord Caitanya, that His Holy Name be heard in every town and village. Neither can the demons devastate this planet independent of the will of Krsna. Nothing happens without His sanction. If Krsna wants to kill someone no one can save Him, and if Krsna wants to save someone no one can kill him. For our parts we should just be determined to carry out our mission against all opposition, demons, nuclear war, whatever. The whole universe is finally subject to certain annihilation by the will of Krsna, but devotional service is eternal and is the only certain way one can save himself from devastation. We can preach all over the world that the only way to be saved from collective and individual devastation is to take to the chanting of Hare Krsna. In short, this material world is a very precarious place therefore we should always chant Hare Krsna and seek Krsna’s protection.”

Letter to Sukadeva das 24 November 1974:

“I am glad to learn that you are having nice college programs. Regarding there going to be depression and atomic war, who said that? This is all false propaganda. I never said this.

Letter to: Radhavallabha: — 21 August, 1975

“Do not worry, in spite of war, Srimad-Bhagavatam will be distributed. We don’t care for war. Our preaching business will go on.”

In one conversation a devotee asked Srila Prabhupada “If there is war, will devotees also die?” Srila Prabhupada replied that of course they will. And someone also asked what should the devotees do if there is a war. Srila Prabhupada said he should look up at the bomb coming down and say

 bomb drop

 “This is Krsna!”

On another occasion Srila Prabhupada reminded us that Krsna is always favorably disposed to His devotees: MW conversation, June 16, 1975 Hawaii:

Prabhupada: That will take place. Otherwise, how they will be killed?
Ambarisa: They’re calling it a limited nuclear war.
Prabhupada: They are accumulated so much sinful load that must be killed. That is sure. [break] …the massacre. That will take place.
Harikesa: The sinless people will survive?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Devotee (3): Who is that?
Prabhupada: We. [break] There was an artificial famine in India and I particularly inquired from all devotees whether they have got any problem in this famine. They said, “No, we haven’t got.” I have taken the statistics. In 1942 the artificial famine created by government… So there were big earthquake in Bihar. At that time one of my godbrother, he was government auditor. So I inquired. In that earthquake only his house was saved. I have seen it many times. Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati [Bg. 9.31]. That is the only….
samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam
mahat-padam punya-yaso murareh
bhavambudhir vatsa-padam param padam
padam padam yad vipadam na tesam
 [SB 10.14.58]
Padam padam yad vipadam na tesam. It is not meant for them, all these dangerous condition.”

Whatever happens, Krsna is behind it. Sometimes it seems that some powerful man or men are in control and with their inventions they may kill us all. But this is not the case. I remember an amusing but striking story Srila Prabhupada told us about Churchill, Hitler and World War 2:

Churchill giving the V sign to Hitler    Hitler

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Feliz Cumpleanos

Today my husband worked. I woke the kids up to bring them to the temple, despite the fact that it is Saturday. It is good to go see Krishna, plus I had my too thick kheer (oops...will do better next time, I promise!) to drop off for the Deities. I am feeling very fortunate to have moved to a ready made Krishna conscious community, where kirtan and class and aroti are going independent of our attendance at the temple. I feel, however, that I need to take greater advantage of this reservoir of nectar. I need to remind myself not to take the availability of association for granted.

After class my kids hung out with Indrani's boys, wrestling and throwing our stuffed monkey up into a tree.  Madhumati surely attracted Srimati Radharani's attention this morning in her purple sari, pink dupatta and leopard print cardigan.

This afternoon we attended a birthday party. We got there on time, which basically meant early.  My son and the boys passed the time wrestling.  Venumadhava is really into wrestling ever since he saw the South American gurukulis wrestle the Vrindavan gurukulis on Youtube.
He especially liked that all the boys had sikhas and were tough.

Can I tell you how awesome I think the Rico clan is?  The party literally got started once Premananda Goura Prabhu arrived.  "Who wants cake???!!!"  All the kids were like "YAAAY!!!!"  Prabhu clapped his hands together and said, "Okay, so first we are going to have a kirtan and all the kids have to chant....LOUDLY...and then you can have cake!!!!!"  I don't even think I can communicate his enthusiasm with exclamation marks so I will sort of give up now.

He chants very beautifully, with sort of a raspy voice. And he really has a knack for getting the kids, especially the boys, involved.  All the boys were playing instruments and chanting.  And I have to say, my little loudmouth did me proud by chanting the loudest and with intense enthusiasm.  Venumadhava is such an energetic kid. He just needs to use his powers for good.

After Premananda Goura prabhu's kirtan, the birthday boy--Vishnu--led Narasingha prayers.  I was very impressed that the children were so focused on their chanting.  After kirtan was some jal keli--sporting in the pool--and then prasadam.  But before all of that, we received special mercy in the form of Lord Narasimhadeva's tooth from the murti in Mayapur.  I was excited to get gently impaled by this maha because I once had a tooth from Narasimhadeva. This was in 1997 and it was only in my possession for a few days before I gave it as a Vyasa Puja offering to my diksa guru, but the feeling of having it was potent while it lasted.

Next, Prabhu grabbed this box off his altar and started saying "Here's Kurma! Here's Kurma! Anybody want to see Kurma!" The kids all crowded around to look at the sila.

Vishnu and his cake, which Mayapur Malini made from the Eggless Cakes book and it tasted super good--light and rich.  While having prasadam I was just overwhelmed by my good fortune; I have a really full life.  It has been 7 weeks since we moved to Alachua and already I feel settled and at home. I have met some really nice women and my kids are in with a nice bunch of little ones.

Premananda Gaura Prabhu was saying that they have to have camping and bon fires at their house. This is what they did for Bali and Kish when they were small.  All the kids would come to their house for a weekend of fun fun fun. Prabhu was saying how all those kids are still friends today. And I see this. They are so close, like family. When I talk to the parents of my kids' friends, everyone says the same thing.  That these friendships they are making now are going to be their lifelong friendships.  It is, in a word, fantastic.

Rishi Shonpal : Confessions of a Pirate

For years I've been a law-abiding citizen never do any wrong but wondering why in the UK we pay such extortionate prices for goods? I use to buy my tapes and CDs at such ridiculous prices but then back in the late 90s Napster came alone. The great and powerful mp3 search was just beginning...I was able to download whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted - all for free. I finally felt my good karma being used up as I was getting back from the years of spending money.

This has continued for several years and though a bought the occasional vinyl (for productions/DJ purposes) I haven't really bought much. The best was Napster then it switched to Morpheus then to WinMX to Soulseek to Bearshare to Emule to Bittorrent. I became interested in peer2peer (p2p) and checked out many websites which detailed the RIAA battle against the file sharers. We were the liberators - taking from the rich and giving to the masses.

But this all changed this summer when a close friend recently interviewed Thes One from People Under The Stairs (P.U.T.S), an amazing underground hip hop band which speak about real life, making music and having fun. These guys spend so many hours in the studio, you wouldn't believe, spending so much money on production gear just to satisfy the fans and make a living. Yet the internet can take all that energy and translate it into file sharing. I use to support bands by buying their mechanidise, going to the gigs etc but never buying the album.

They are coming out with an album entitled 'Fun DMC' this Monday, 29th September, and a recent poor quality leak with made and people have been downloading in the masses. PUTS are of my favourite bands of all time and I respect them as artists, yet I never bought anything from them. This is going to change as I am buying both the CD and vinyl along with other associated goods.

Don't get me wrong, I love the internet and bittorrent and will continue to download music. It isn't wrong, it's just sharing music with friends. Just like when I use to like a song, I would record it onto tape similar the internet allows the same thing. But the difference is I will now support small/underground bands by buying the vinyls/CDs who are trying to make a livelihood and put many hours into something that is available at the click of a button.

For more information on PUTS. Check out:
If you like what you hear, go and support these guys - they're amazing!

Kurma dasa : Society, Friendship and Love

shipwreck:

William Cowper (1731-1800) was an English poet and singer of hymns. Alexander Selkirk (1676 – 1721) was a Scottish sailor who spent four years as a castaway on an uninhabited island. This poem was Cowper's tribute to Alexander Selkirk whose shipwrecked existence upon an uninhabited island later inspired Daniel Defoe to write Robinson Crusoe.

My guru Srila Prabhupada was fond of quoting lines 16 and 17 "Society, Friendship, and Love, Divinely bestow'd upon man" in his books and lectures.* It seems he studied Cowper at Scottish Churches College in Calcutta at the turn of the 20th century.

"The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk"

I am monarch of all I survey; My right there is none to dispute; From the centre all round to the sea I am lord of the fowl and the brute O Solitude! where are the charms That sages have seen in thy face? Better dwell in the midst of alarms, Than reign in this horrible place.

I am out of humanity's reach; I must finish my journey alone; Never hear the sweet music of speech — I start at the sound of my own; The beasts that roam over the plain My form with indifference see — They are so unacquainted with man, Their tameness is shocking to me.

Society, Friendship, and Love Divinely bestow'd upon man, Oh had I the wings of a dove How soon would I taste you again! My sorrows I then might assuage In the ways of religion and truth, Might learn from the wisdom of age, And be cheer'd by the sallies of youth.

Ye winds that have made me your sport, Convey to this desolate shore Some cordial endearing report Of a land I shall visit no more. My friends, do they now and then send A wish or a thought after me? O tell me I yet have a friend, Though a friend I am never to see.

How fleet is a glance of the mind! Compared with the speed of its flight, The tempest itself lags behind, And the swift-wingèd arrows of light. When I think of my own native land, In a moment I seem to be there; But, alas! recollection at hand Soon hurries me back to despair.

But the sea-fowl is gone to her nest, The beast is laid down in his lair; Even here is a season of rest, And I to my cabin repair. There's mercy in every place; And mercy—encouraging thought!— Gives even affliction a grace, And reconciles man to his lot.

(*this is one of my favourites:

"Srila Vidyapati, a great Vaisnava poet, has sung:

'tatala saikate, vari-bindu-sama, suta-mita-ramani-samaje'

Material sense gratification, with society, friendship and love, is herein compared to a drop of water falling on a desert. A desert requires oceans of water to satisfy it, and if only a drop of water is supplied, what is its use?"

) (from Srila Prabhupada's purport to Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 4: The Creation of the Fourth Order, 4.25.12.)

Jahnavi, UK : Marigold Mohan

I finally got to look after my dear deities of Radha Vrajamohan yesterday. I think they look so beautiful in their orange outfit. I chanted some rounds in front of them this morning, whilst I played an hour long recording I have of Vrindavan at 5 am. The peacocks cry and other birds sing continuously. You can hear the rustle of leaves, and sometimes people chanting in the distance. Every so often, a temple bell rings out. It completely transports me and I’ve really been finding it a solace as the winter approaches here. Around this time last year I was getting ready to go to Vrindavan, and I feel a longing to be there now. Still, I feel that I am in Vrindavan, as long as I have such fortune to be around the deities and the devotees.

But sometimes, only the physical reality of Sri Vrindavan Dham will do. I saw a photo of the Yamuna at sunset yesterday and my heart flipped. I remember the most wonderful evening last year - floating down towards Mathura in a flag covered boat, as the sun sank slowly and the temples passed. After a while, we got out and had kirtan on the sandy bank, singing the glories of the wonderful place in which we sat. I couldn’t believe my good fortune, to be in that very place, remembering ‘yamuna tira vanachari’ - how our dear Lord Krishna would walk and play on these banks and in the forest groves nearby. Bliss.

ISKCON News.com : Photographing the Exotic: Brahma Muhurta Dasa

By on 27 Sep 2008

The Western eye, and often heart, has always been drawn to the exotic. For artist and photographer Brahma Muhurta Dasa, the pull was stronger than for most. Born Michael Buhler-Rose, he began reading about different philosophies at fourteen, an age when most of his peers were more interested in videogames and girls. When a neighbor of his lent him first Barbara Stoler Miller’s translation of the Bhagavad-gita, and then ISKCON founder Srila Prabhupada’s, he was deeply affected by the ancient text.

ISKCON News.com : Swami Holds Varnasrama Workshop at ISKCON New Talavana

By on 27 Sep 2008

Bhakti Raghava Swami, a proponent of the simple-living, high-thinking lifestyle, visited the ISKCON New Talavana farm in Mississippi from September 12 – 14th to hold a weekend workshop.

The seminar conveyed the urgency of implementing Srila Prabhupada’s vision of varnashram dharma. Varnashram is a traditional vedic social structure of natural vocations and life stages. It is often confused with the birth-based caste system, which Vaishnavas consider to be a missaplication of the original ancient system.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : “Agnus Dei” by John Rutter

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona eis requiem.
grant them rest.

Man that is born of a woman
.,.hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery.
He cometh up, and is cut down like a flower;
he fleeth as it were a shadow.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona eis requiem.
grant them rest.

In the midst of life, we are in death:
of whom may we seek for succour?

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona eis requiem.
grant them rest.

I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord:
he that believeth in me, though he were dead,
.,.yet shall he live:
and whosoever liveth and believeth in me
.,.shall never die.

(Lyrics excerpted from his Requiem, an orchestral work. Hear a clip here. I confess I acquired a taste for requiem masses when I had end stage liver disease.)

ISKCON News.com : Sadaputa's Departure: A Quantum Loss

By on 27 Sep 2008

My connection with Sadaputa goes back more than thirty years. I remember first meeting him one day at our Brooklyn Hare Krishna center, a large old brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. It was the middle of the day, and hardly anyone else was around, so I found myself spending at least an hour or so talking with this young scientist who had come there with questions about our philosophy.

We talked about consciousness, about Bhagavad-gita, about the implications of Schrödinger’s equation.

ISKCON News.com : I Don’t Have the Time to Exercise My Marriage!

By on 27 Sep 2008

In the fast-paced lifestyle of today’s society, the focus is often getting things done and getting them done fast. Exchanges between spouses and between parents and children are, more often than not, fit in among the goings and comings of family activities and responsibilities. Choosing to slow down and truly connect with one another is considered a luxury that many couples feel they cannot afford. As a consequence, the demands of daily life absorb our attention and energy and we often fail to take the time to focus on the health of our relationship with our spouse.

ISKCON News.com : The Kirtan Book -- Part Two?

By on 27 Sep 2008

The publication of "The Yoga of Kirtan: Conversations on the Sacred Art of Chanting," while sparking some mild controversy within ISKCON, has enabled me to share our philosophy in venues I wouldn't have previously thought possible. Radio shows ask for interviews, yoga studios and health food stores repeatedly invite me to lecture, to explain "the new phenomenon" known as kirtan, and numerous New Age magazines and yoga journals have either asked me to write feature articles on kirtan or have favorably reviewed the book.

H.H. Bhaktimarg Swami : CAN SOMBBODY PUT A STOP TO THIS BEFORE ITS TOO LATE?

(A comical article on Bhaktimarga Swami's walk of Ireland)
By Praghosa Dasa
We are now in serious danger of ruining our long practiced and much cherished reputation of our 21st century sannyasi!

What are we talking about? Well a couple of weeks ago a certain member of the sannyasa order all but snuck into the emerald isle unnoticed. Usually a visiting sannyasi’s arrival is known well in advance and there is at least a modest welcoming party to greet him. However not this time, rather it was a very humble entrance at a regional port and from there, almost immediately into a walking tour of the country. This is where things really began to deteriorate, you see walking in and of itself is quite a sattvic activity, not least because it is so environmentally friendly and of course healthy to boot. It is also an excellent way to focus on the concept of simple living and high thinking, what to speak of developing tolerance due to the constant battle against the elements, particularly the wind and rain.

But that is only the beginning, this Swami then had the audacity to stay over at various persons homes along the way, encouraging them in their spiritual life, taking a little prasadam and then leaving at the crack of dawn the next day and never staying over in any one home for more that one night! There is little doubt that a little prasadam in the evening is hardly going to sustain you for the duration of an eight hour, forty kilometre daily walk right? So what does our trend-setting Swami decide to do? Struth, he only goes and starts eating the fruits and berries growing on the wild bushes along the roadside! That really was the straw that threatens to break the back of the 21st century sannyasa dharma. Hence my rallying cry to all right minded thinking devotees out there who care passionately about protecting and preserving the unique sannyasa dharma we have developed over the last few decades – stop this man by hook or by crook before his odd behaviour catches on and we become a laughing stock!

You can help by sending him a cell phone, the latest laptop computer, an electronic personal organiser, a blueberry, the latest digital camcorder, an ipod or all of the above! You could also write to him at the below address impressing upon him that you get no financial benefit from ‘walking miles’ and then introduce him to the wonderful world of ‘air miles’ and all the perks that flow from them. His address is:
The walking Swami,
The Shack,
Bally-go-backwards,
The Back of Beyond,
Planet Earth

Ps Physician heal thyself! I guess I’ll send him some of my own electronic collection first :-)

Subuddhi Krishna dasa, Chicago, USA : Pearls of Wisdom - 52

Sankhya System Process (As explained by Lord Kapila): (Continued..)

The devotee should thereafter meditate upon the Lord's moonlike navel, from which the entire universe has sprung. Next the yogi should concentrate his mind upon Lord's nipples, which resemble a pair of exquisite gems. Then he should concentrate upon the Lord's chest, which is abode of Mahalakshmi, and which is the source of all transcendental pleasure for the mind and eyes.

Thereafter, the devotee should fix his mind upon Lord's neck, which enhances the beauty of Kaustubha gem that hangs down to His chest. The yogi can then meditate upon the four arms of the Lord, which are the source for all the powers by which the devatas can control various functions of material nature. Next the yogi can contemplate the Lord's ornaments, which were polished by Mount mandara as it revolved during the churning of the milk ocean.

H.H. Mukunda Goswami : Angles of Vision

Krsna consciousness is multi-faceted. Srila Prabhupada has used the
phrase, "angle of vision" many times. Even material truth is
many-sided. It is said there are at least two sides to every issue, and
another maxim says that the pursuit of truth is like picking
raspberries. You miss a lot if you approach from only one angle. Srila
Prabhupada wanted us to approach Krsna consciousness with an open mind.
Krsna is the ultimate Truth, so this truth has an infinite number of
facets. Being 'independently thoughtful' doesn't mean joining the 'herd

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Smaller than the Smallest

Tonite I made a teeny tiny batch of Muscadine Grape Jelly. For those of you not familiar with the muscadine grape, it is about the size of a small plum and grows abundantly in the Southeast United States. Muscadines are sweet with a slightly earthy taste, which some people say makes them taste more like wine straight off the vine than other grapes. This reporter can offer no comment on that since the last time she had wine was at Friday night Sabbath: Manischevitz in a dixie cup.

I only had a small amount of muscadines, but went for it anyway because I just need to be making jam. And super small batches (in this case I yielded only 4 jars) are fine now that I don't rely solely on online sales. I can sell the jars at my table on Sundays.

Some people are jelly adverse. I'm not. Actually, I am feeling separation from my ornamental crabapples in Pennsylvania. They made the best jelly--full of tartness and deep red in color. The heirloom crabapple tree at the Gita Nagari farm was also a great jelly maker--rosey brownish in color--completely traditional.

The color of this Muscadine Jelly is more red than purple. Honestly speaking, I think it tastes closer to mulberry than concord grape. It's so fun to make these tiny little jams out of unusual fruit. I know that the blog readers get excited about these little expansions of our gastronomical world. So if you are eager to taste a new kind of grape, shoot me an email at sabjimata@gmail.com. If I make some more, I will list it in the Sabjimata Store. Muscadine Jelly is only $6.
