H.H. Bhakti Caitanya Swami : Krinitsa Festival in Russia by Dayala Nitai das, Kazan, Russia

My first initiation

At festival I was going to ask for initiation from my spiritual master Bhakti Chaitanya Swami, but at the same time some strange voice inside spoke me: ” do not be in a hurry ! You will not manage! You are not  ready!  You are too weak!”.

Sometimes it sounded loud, but sometimes it calmed down. My Godbrother Acharyaratna told me: ” we can wait for 10 years and see if we become more pure, but it may not happen! Only by Guru’s mercy we are capable to get rid from anarthas, therefore it is necessary to take shelter! ”

My mind calmed down a bit, but not too much. However I  had a dream in a train with Maharaja! There was to be a programme at a school, and we were waiting for Maharaja to arrive. Finally He came! We were pleased to meet him, and I for some reason found myself sitting near by Gurudev. Then the dream broke, but i felt more convinced, and I decided to ask Gurudev for initiation.

Then I wrote this poem.

Bhakti Caitanya Swami

4.30am, I rise from bed,
And the sun from my window can’t be seen.
Therefore I pray: “Srimate
Bhakti Caitanya Swamin iti namine!”

My Gurudev - He serves Prabhupada by
Speeches, business, in reality, in dream.
Therefore I bow: “Srimate
Bhakti Caitanya Swamin iti namine !”

And if maya comes crawling inopportunely,
and the intelligence flashes with sensual fire
Therefore I pray: “Srimate
Bhakti Caitanya Swamin iti namine!”

He is like a  doctor in a saffron gown!
He is Gauranga-soldier on a horse!
With great respect I pray: “Srimate
Bhakti Caitanya Swamin ite namine!”

Words are simple. But the instructions are sufficient:
To settlement, city, village and the country.
And I speak through my heart: “Srimate
Bhakti Caytanya Swamin ite namine!”

I am a rascal and have spent my life.
Pretence, envy, anger sit in me.
One rescue is japa and: ” Srimate
Bhakti Catanya Swamin ite namine! ”

When we have arrived at the festival, I understood that the most important thing that I want at this festival, it is to be near to the spiritual master, and to serve him. I asked Krishna about it. I prayed to the Deities Sri Sri Nitai Gaura Hari who had with us from the apartment of Acaryaratna.

When Maharaja arrived he was met by about 25 desciples and well-wishers. He has flown into Anapa and then he was brought to Кrinitsa, to the hotel “Seagull” where all the senior devotees were staying. It was quite cold, but nevertheless Gurudeva lived there for the whole festival and was available there for darshans

The first darshan.

Even before the first lecture, in conversation with the president of our yatra, Rasabihari prabhu, Maharaja agreed to initiate me, along with Tatyana, Acaryaratna’s wife. During darshan I asked Maharaja, how to develop my spiritual life after initiation. Gurudeva explained:

It is necessary to wake up early and chant early in the morning. If we rise early and we chant our rounds, we will naturally progress in our spiritual lives, but if we rise late and we chant rounds late, our spiritual
lives in due course will deteriorate and come to an end!

I told Maharaja that I already heard him say that in lectures.

- Yes, - he smiles. - I speak all the time about it! Do you chant your
rounds in the morning?

- In part, - I am confused.

- How many?

- Something like half in the morning, the others I chant during day -

Surprisingly, even though my English has remained at a school child’s level, still I managed to understand most of what Maharaja spoke, without a translator. If someone else were to speak  I would practically understand nothing, but my guru speaks as though specially for me! And language barriers start to be erased.

Morning japa.

Bhakti Caitanya Swami  has a wonderful spiritual tradition at the festival - to chant japa in the mornings with his disciples (although actually some others come also). During the festival I came three times for japa  with Maharaja, and I chanted inattentively all three times.

Please try to imagine the situation, that for the whole year did not see the spiritual master, and then meet him! Naturally all your attention will be concentrated on him.

During japa time I always sat near to Maharaja and started to chant the holy names, and even if I managed to concentrate firstly on a sound vibration then gradually all my attention passed to the guru and I started to think of him.

I tried to pull my mind back, and it was possible for me for some time, but then it was again switched to the guru. This was always happening.

The second darsana was in the form of interview for our yatra newsletter. I asked: “Why did Vidura not try to help Draupadi when she was being undressed in the assembly? “, “Why did Bhishma fight on the side of the Kurus? ” “Where does Paramatma go when the soul goes to spiritual world?” Gurudeva patiently answered these and other questions.

Gurudeva’s lectures were held in a small tent. They began at 10.30. First we together with Gurudeva sang a bhajan, then there was a seminar, and then we synchronously chanted one round of japa. In general at this festival it was possible to plunge into Ocean of the holy names in the association of Bhakti Caitanya Swami!

In the second lecture, at the end, Maharaja explained:

- We should chant attentively. One symptom of inattentive chanting is the wrong pronunciation of the holy names. One devotee chanted mantra on beads near Prabhupada. He chanted so quickly that it sounded like: “Snick, snick, snick! Prabhupada heard him and said: ” Be careful! Otherwise at the end of this life you may go to Snick-loka! “.

Maharaja also said that some devotees, if they’re chanting inattentively, may miss beads or chant two mantras on one bead. When we were all about to sart chanting in unison Gurudev said that at the end of the round we would check to see if we had all finished simultaneously or if someone still had a bead or two to chant on.

We started to chant. I was nervous. I tried to concentrate, but it was very difficult for me. I was afraid: what if I don’t finish the round on the same bead as Maharaja? Anyway, we chanted like this after every class, but then on the second to last day, when Maharaja finished his round, I still had three extra beads!

The third darshan.

One day prior to it I had a conversation with Rasabihari prabhu . Doubts had again started to overcome me, concerning, about whether I can undertake such responsibility as initiation, whether I can strictly follow the vows so that I serve Gurudeva up to the end of my life without offences. I left the building feeling gloomy. I then met Rasabihari prabhu, who with a severe look said to me: “you think carefully! It is a serious step! You  cannot break principles any more! It will be necessary to tolerate your mind and senses! ” And when I heard the word “tolerate” in my consciousness a gloomy future appeared, a certain grey life: there will be  temptations from maya, kicks, impacts, and similar things, but I must tolerate them!

I felt bad for some reason. And if it were not for the third darshan I do not know, whether I would be able to get out of this condition or not.

At the darsana Maharaja accepted me with pleasure .

- If Maharaja has smth to do  I am ready to come later, - I speak to translator.

- My  only business now is to answer your questions, - smiles Maharaja.

- Well it will occupy some time, - I answer, remembering that it is third darshan, and it is possible there are some disciples who did not see Maharaja.

-For  how  long time? Up to the end of festival ? - Jokes Gurudev, and here I understand, that everything is all right.

We talk about my life, about obstacles in a way of devotional service.

- If one breaks principles after initiation - very big reactions will come - explains Maharaja.

I speak about the excitements before initiation. I ask for instructions  on the future.

Gurudeva responds:

- I think, that you should go to the temple a number of times every week for the morning program!

Maharaja also gives blessings for developing Food for life in my town, Kazan.

“It is necessary to apply intellegence!” And ” Try to double number of those you feed! ” - these phrases I remember better than others.

I vaguely remember the first meeting with Gurudev. It was in 1994  during his first visit to Kazan, when I was a child. When I was 12, I again met him when I interviewed him for our newspaper. Gurudev warmly accepted me and answered all my questions. And when I was going to leave, Maharaja stopped me and started to ask about my life. It touched me deeply. Why was Maharaja was interested in me? Who am I?

I asked myself these questions for a long time after that meeting. And  so this evening, in Krinitsa Maharaja also warmly accepted me and dispelled all my doubts.

The fourth darshan appeared unplanned and took place in the evening, on the eve of the initiation. I helped Gurudev to sort documents for the Russian GBC meeting, and when I was going to leave, he stopped me.

- What’s your actual name?
- Denis
- And who has named you Dravida?
- Prabhavishnu Swami?
- Are you attached to this name? Do you want to leave it?
- Yes I am attached, but I want that you give me a new name.
- No problem.
- And with what and with whom this name should be connected  ?

I had not think about with whom this name should be connected.

- With Lord Nityananda!
- Oh! It’s not so simple to find a name connected with Lord Nityananda
beginning with the letter D.
- Let it will be with another letter!

That was my last conversation with Gurudev before initiation.

Initiation.

I sit in the tent. The beginning is delayed. First comes Govinda Maharaja, then Rohinisuta prabhu, then Gurudeva! Then Bhakti Vaibhava Maharaja and Lokanatha Swami.

Each of the spiritual masters delivers a speech about importance of acceptance of initiation. Bhakti Caitanya Swami concentrates his attention on the 10 offences against the holy name. Lokanath Swami then said that
initiation means taking a new birth. He sang the English song: “Happy Birthday to you!”

- I wish you happy birthday! I wish, that you will not born in a material world again!

After the important  words  the most important part starts - taking vows and giving  names. First a disciple of Lokanatha Maharaja named Vitaly receives the spiritual name Vitalla. There is a Deity of Krishna with such name in india. Actually this Deity was in Ancient Russia.

The turn reaches our Guru Maharaja and up to me in particular. I promise to follow four principles, to chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra every day.

Gurudev looks straight into my eyes. He is very glad also. He supports me with through his eyes, as if he is saying: “Say the vows more confidently, do not be afraid, I am here! ”

- Your name will be connected with Lord Nityananda, - with a smile  says Maharaja.
- Lord Nityananda is very merciful! From now on you will be known as Doyal Nitay das ! Hari Bol!

- Haribol, - I shout in full ecstasy and I bow. I do not need anything else. Frankly speaking  I had thought of this name on the eve opf the initiation, but it somehow just passed fleetingly through my head. But when Maharaja pronounced it, it was real mercy, from him and Lord Nityananda!

Tatyana, wife of Acharja Ratna also takes the vows.

- Your name is the name of one of the gopis, - says Maharaja. - From now on you will be known as  Taravali devi dasi.! Haribol!

Such were some of the pastimes of Bhakti Caitanya Swami at the Krinitsa Festival in Russia.

Krishna kirti das, USA : Marxism and Marriage (with Liberal Foregrounding!)

Marxism as a philosophy is anti-family because it models the relationship of the husband and wife as one between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, with the husband as the bourgeoi-master and wife as the prole-servant. This unequal power differential, as per Marxist conflict theory, is regarded as a cause for the oppression of women. The solution? The dissolution of the monogamous family structure (bolding added):

Japa Group : The Power of Association

In the latest Japa Room this week we had Stage 10 which was a summary of all the 9 stages. It's a time for reflection and contemplation of all we have covered in the last 9 weeks. I especially had the realisation about the power of association of devotees. The analogy is that if a single stick is bent then it will break but with a bunch of sticks together there is no question of them breaking....the same goes with association, when we associate with each other in a Krsna conscious way, then we are strong together and help each other to make advancement. Another aspect of association is revealing one's mind in confidence - I feel the Japa Room is a very non judgemental place to talk about obstacles and difficulties in our Japa, it's a very important part of the process for reforming our chanting. I was very happy to see all the members this week and the questions were very interesting and I am sure everyone who came was inspired by the sessions.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada : ISKCON Toronto Celebrates Diwali

With a temple room as large as ours, it may seem impossible to create intimacy and ambiance! However, with the house lights turned down and the dramatic spotlights in use, the atmosphere can suddenly be changed! With a festive mood. a packed temple celebrated Diwali at New Remuna Dhama, ISKCON Toronto, this past Sunday.

During the four Sundays of Kartik, ISKCON Toronto is presenting an ongoing theme of lila (pastimes) or, more specifically, Worshiping the Lord Through His Lila.

Beginning last week with an introduction to Damodara lila, Diwali celebrations focused on the lila of Lord Rama's triumphant return to Ayodhya. The next two weeks will feature presentations which continue our theme of approaching Lord Krsna through His lila. (hint: next week will revisit a famous pastime with Krsna and a hill)

Festivities kicked off with a rousing kirtan during the 6:00pm arati, led by Dhira Grahi das. The assembled devotees were then led in the weekly singing of the Damodarastakam. With the lights turned down and images of baby Krsna being projected, the mood created was one of bliss and serenity.

HH Bhaktimarga Swami then gave a wonderful class as he continued the series of lectures during this month that analyze two verses of the Damodarastakam each Sunday. Maharaj spoke about the beauty of Lord Krsna's pastimes as a small child and how the month of Kartik, being such a special time of year, provides devotees with an opportunity to glorify this enamouring form of Krsna as a little child.

Attendees were then in for a special treat. Maharaj conducted a dramatic reading of Lord Rama's triumphant return to Ayodhya. Maharaj's dramatic reading was accompanied by live bamboo flute and harmonium. The atmosphere created was amazing as devotees dove deep into the reading!

The evening concluded with a rousing kirtan that had the walls shaking! Devotees danced to their hearts content and then enjoyed a sumptuous prasadam feast after. Govardhana Puja is next and will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 29th! See you there!

Madhava Ghosh dasa : “The Dead” by Billy Collins

The dead are always looking down on us, they say,
while we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
they are looking down through the glass bottom boats of heaven
as they row themselves slowly through eternity.

They watch the tops of our heads moving below on earth,
and when we lie down in a field or on a couch,
drugged perhaps by the hum of a long afternoon,
they think we are looking back at them,

which makes them lift their oars and fall silent
and wait, like parents, for us to close our eyes.

27-Oct-08, 1.30 pm report

The doctors are happy with the progress. In fact they are amazed how Guru Maharaja is making fast recovery in comparison to other similar cases. They say it is a miracle. Although they wanted to take off the ventilator because of the unstable BP they don’t want to do it today. Hasty decision might become dangerous at this time so the doctors are very careful. His sugar level is alright. Guru Maharaja is moving his limbs on his own and opens is eyes now and then on his own.

No devotees are absolutely allowed in the hospital to see Guru Maharaja as he gets emotional and that increases his BP. Atleast for 2 to 3 days NO DEVOTEES WILL BE ALLOWED may it be senior devotees or GBCs, TPs etc. Please stay where you are and pray and chant for Gurudeva to heal faster.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

Giridhari das, Brasilia, Brazil : Liberating Krishna Consciousness

We often like to say that Krishna Consciousness is an eternal spiritual science. And it is. But we commonly fail to extract the science part from the cultural vehicle in which it was brought to us. ISKCON today is not teaching the pure spiritual science of KC only. It has mixed that message with cultural details that are not only superfluous, but also counterproductive to our mission.

I use the term “cultural vehicle” here for that set of behaviors (including clothing and hair styles), tastes (decorative and culinary), rituals, etc. that carry a message.

It’s common for a person to not see the cultural vehicle and the message it carries as being separable. But they are.

A careful study of our core scriptures (Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam and Caitanya Caritamrta, and Srila Prabhupada’s purports to them) reveals that the spiritual science aspect is taught carefully avoiding cultural details, in the commonly used sense of the word culture, i.e. descriptions of clothing, decoration, architecture, art, cooking and music styles, etc. Also absent from the Gita and Bhagavatam is any great emphasis on public Deity worship or monastic life, both very much a central part of ISKCON culture (but more about that in a later post).

The basic message we get then, is that Krishna consciousness can and should be practiced by people independent of their culture, and there is no reason for it to be imprisoned in a foreign or outdated culture. Precisely because KC is a science and not a set of ethnic behaviors, it can exist in harmony with whatever the reigning culture is. The more we can practice KC without shocking with our native culture, the more likely we are to be really practicing the eternal spiritual science and not uselessly importing cultural behavior from another ethnic group or past period in time. The less time we spend trying to adjust ethnic details in our life, such as clothing and food, the more we can concentrate on actually becoming perfect servants of Krishna, in terms of our moral behavior (mode of goodness lifestyle) and devotion.

People strongly resist changing their ways. It’s just the way we are wired. It’s one thing to adjust within one’s culture (from a non-vegetarian diet to a vegetarian diet, from immoral to moral behavior, from taking drugs and drinking to remaining sober), but it’s quite another to adopt a new ethnicity or to accept social interactions that are foreign to us.

When we mix spiritual science with non-native cultural details, or what is otherwise seen as strange behavior to that native culture, we also diminish our capacity to spread Krishna Consciousness. In fact, an anachronistic or ethnically dissonant cultural vehicle, affects our Movement by: 1) giving it a cultish and unappealing image to the general public, 2) making it more difficult for people to want to get to know about it, 3) once people do get to know about, it makes it more difficult for them to commit to it, and 4) once they do commit to it, it makes it more difficult to stick to it year after year.

It is the duty of each and every one of us who are part of ISKCON to analyze our way of doing things and acting, to become aware of what bhakti-yoga really is, what is really essential to KC, and what is not.

Mayapur Online : Message from HH Bhakti Purusottama Swami

First of all I would like to thank all devotees around the world for their prayers for our Guru Maharaja, His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaj. Guru Maharaja's situation still remains very critical. Though there are some indications of slight positive development still it is only a very insignificant development. He is still supported by ventilator. Though once or twice a day he just opens his eyes and apparently responds, with out speaking, to what devotees say but it is not so remarkable improvement.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : The Hill

The Alachua devotees put together an amazing looking replication of Govardhana Hill.  The temple on top of the hill was crafted from burfi.  Even after I took these pictures more was being added.  Powdered sugar was being sprinkled along the parikrama path to emulate the dust of Braja.

When it came time to circumambulate the Hill, Visvambhara chanted like a madman.  The men were kind of crazy.  For an outdoor kirtan it was superloud and once you started circling the Hill it felt like you were caught in some sort of spiritualized merry go round.  There was no getting off!

Visvambhara continued chanting inside the temple room where, in the presence of Sri Sri Radha Syamasundara, was twice as mad!

Avadhuta-priya dd, Jaipur, India : How much are you worth?

Recently I have spent countless hours writing my CV, updating it and making various forms of the same, boring CV document. Trust me - I prefer to write up a 5000 words essay than dive into the challenge of CV writing boredom. It is an art - how much do you sell yourself for? How much of yourself can you advertise on the first page of your CV, before fed up Human Resources manager will be prompted to put you in the 'No' file? How many people do you need to outstand and outnumber to get to the top? And how not to run out of steam in the meantime? Tough questions for the tough living in the mainstream of our human society. Some people have competitiveness in their blood. I don't. When I used to train target shooting I never wanted to compete against the others. But the cruel world is not set up like that.
So how much are we worth at the end of the day? Now see the crude reality.
Forget your CV. Die quickly so you can save some money on your exit.

ISKCON Melbourne : Jayapataka Swami - 27th Oct 9.30 am report

From Ratnavali...

Guru Maharaja's health is progressing very nicely and the doctors are happy with his improvement. Yesterday the doctor saw him coughing and said it is a good symptom. This means the bodily system has started to function.

A visiting doctor asked Guru Maharaja to first lift the left hand which he did. Not only that, he also articulated all his fingers very well. The doctor then asked him to lift the right hand he wasn't able to lift it well. He said some physiotherapy would be required.

Later Dr. P.P Ashok came and asked Guru Maharaja to lift his legs. Guru Maharaja lifted both the legs and started to move them in the air 3 to 4 times. Guru Maharaja also pointed to the tube in the mouth indicating he wants to speak. Therefore the doctor said that Guru Maharaja is showing excellent responses and that Guru Maharaja understand everything 100%. Guru Maharaja had good eye contact with the doctors the whole time. The doctor gave instruction to the nurses that they could start removing the tubes one by one.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Sunday Report: Sabjimata's Nite Off

I took the nite off so I could spend time with my family at the temple. We celebrated Govardhana Puja, a biggie in the holiday department for Gaudiya Vaisnavas or, as we are colloquially known, Hare Krishnas. There were no gluten kebobs, no jars of chili pickle or jam--even though people were asking for them. But, despite the fact that I didn't set up my table, I still ended up cooking for a few hours today.

Saturday nite I spent baking 3 cheesecakes and 2 cheesecake pies. The pies were to bring to the temple for the festival and the cakes were for the auction being held to raise money for my children's school. But after we went to the temple in the morning and I got all wrapped up in that religious girl fervor, I went home and headed for the kitchen.

It is always nice to commune with God through cooking. Who needs prayer when you've got a stack of cookbooks, 16 cups of freshly made ghee and a clean apron? Alright, it is always good to start off with a little prayer, but once I get enraptured by the flame of the stove stuff just starts to happen...supernaturally.

So, want to see what I cooked?

I tried to keep it all pretty simple since my ingredients and time were limited. For this foolproof sabji I pan fried paneer in ghee and then briefly sauteed it in more ghee with hing, salt and tomatoes.

Carrot halava with raisins, pecans, cardamom and cream.

Vanilla cheesecakes every which way. This is the pie version, plain and simple. The other pie as well as the monster cakes all got covered with jam. Frooo-T.

This is quick coconut burfi made from a recipe out of Yamuna Devi's cookbook (ghee, powdered milk, maple syrup and dried coconut). I used really good quality Wisconsin maple syrup to sweeten it. The texture of the burfi has some chew since it was made with syrup. I have another insta-burfi recipe from Bharati in New Jersey which uses ricotta cheese and is so creamy good no one would guess it's not butter. I mean burfi.

Because everything was going into clay pots, I immediately thought "chipped rice." Here is a basic poha with fried potatoes, carrots, cashews as well as raisins and tomatoes. Light and fluffy.

Cidha-dahi. Flat rice made with raisins, hazlenuts, almonds and ripe persimmons. Oh yeah. And yogurt.

Can you guess?

Getting closer....

Khandvi!!! Ahh...this batch honestly turned out the best in a long time. The texture was perfect due to absolute precision in the cooking time. Definitely the mercy of Giriraja!

(This is why I took the nite off. My little ones made their stage debut. Madhumati was a monkey (obviously) and Venumadhava was Madhu-mangala, the cowherd boy of Vrindavan. I will be posting more pictures of the festival at Alternate Reality over the next few days.)

I had a lot of fun cooking without the intent to sell. I brought my preparations to the temple where they were offered to the Deity in clay pots. The altar looked really great with all those clay pots of delicious stuff lined up on the marble floor. But of course, I didn't get a photo of it. The whole thing looked very "Indian mandir."

My cheesecakes, big and boxed up, definitely brought in the buck$ at the school auction. There were so many beautiful cakes, pies and pastries up for auction, all of them out of my league.I did, however, bid $120 on a gorgeous lemon chiffon cake (three layers!!!) but was out bid by five dollars. My husband's head turned bright red. He had no idea I was in cahoots with the guy  next to me who was planning on bidding $125.  I bid for dramatic flair.  And to look like a macher. One of my cakes went for $108 and the other brought in the most cash at $151. Let's see....$151 divided by 8 pieces means I could sell each slice for....

It was nice having the weekend off but now I have to get really focused. I have a cheesecake order, a gluten kabob catering gig, my Sunday feast table to cook for, 4 gallons of ripening persimmon, sweets to make for Wednesday Govardhana Puja celebration at my kids' school, a puppet show to perform and my in-laws coming this weekend.

No problem. If there were three of me.

H.H. Bhakticharu Swami : Back in Ujjain

By H.G. Radha Piyari dasi

Yesterday, around 11 pm Gurumaharaj arrived back from Bombay. Today before Bhagavatam class he spoke about HH Jayapataka Maharaj. He explained in detail about how he got to know about Maharaj’s health and how Maharaj was taken to the Hospital. The doctors first did all the check ups for the heart, like ECG, to find out that is Maharaj got a heart attack? But everything came normal, except his blood pressure. After this primary check up, the doctors took Maharaja to the intensive care unit. There they did Maharaja’s CT-scan. From the CT-scan the doctors found out that Maharaj had a brain hemorrhage. Around 8 am the doctors explained the seriousness of Maharaj’s health to all the sannyasis there, including Gurumaharaj. The doctors explained that there are 2 hemorrhages in the ‘stem’ part of Maharaj’s brain. This stem of the brain is that part which the doctors can’t touch at all means they can’t operate it.

But they also explained the reason for this hemorrhages; one reason is that Maharaja’s blood pressure was very high, over 200 approximately, and second his blood count was very low, around 41000. Blood count indicates the thickness of blood, so in simple words Maharaja’s blood got too thin. So then the doctors brought Maharaj’s blood pressure to normal, and increased the blood count to 75000. The doctors told that Maharaj’s recovery will be very slow, it may take months. But the positive side is that there is some movement in Maharaj’s body. He opened his eyes once or twice and moved his feet. Before leaving for Ujjain, Gurumaharaj went to the hospital to see Maharaj. The doctors were not allowing anyone to see Maharaja, but they did allow Gurumaharaj to see Maharaj. Gurumaharaja even touched Maharaja, but Maharaj was still unconscious. Gurumaharaj was there for half an hour.

Gurumaharaja also told that the schedule of meetings was very tense (tight), about 7 hours a day in two shifts. This was because instead of seven days the meetings were only for 4 days. HH Jayapataka Maharaj was taking medicines for controlling his high blood pressure and that medicines were not so good according to the doctors. He was quit sick from some time but he did not go for proper check up and medication. Gurumaharaj got to know all this from Maharaja’s secretary.

Gurumaharaja also talked to Srinathji Prabhu a very senior devotee. He is disciple of HH Radhanath Maharaj, he met Srila Prabhupada. He told Gurumaharaja that when Srila Prabhupada came to India, HH Jayapataka Maharaja came with him and Prabhupada wanted him to have Indian citizenship. So Srila Prabhupada asked Srinathji Prabhu’s father (who was the MP-member of parliament that time) to adopt Maharaj as his son. But that time our movement was very new and Maharaj was a young foreigner boy of 17 (approximately), therefore this Prabhu refused humbly. But Prabhupada told that this boy (Maharaj), will remain in the movement, will learn Bengali, will preach all over Bengal in Bengali and will get Indian citizenship. That is the exalted position of Maharaja.

Then Gurumaharaj told us that we all should pray to Krsna, that if He so desire, He can cure Srila Jayapataka Maharaj, so that he can actively involve in preaching again and can give us his most wonderful association. Gurumaharaja also instructed the devotees to have 24 hours kirten in the temple and to put a picture of Maharaj in Sri Sri Radha Madan Mohan’s alter.

So if we all will pray with all our love of the heart, our prayers will work. If Krsna so desire, we will soon see Maharaj giving us his most wonderful association and guidance.

Jahnavi, UK : Global Kartik Kirtan: Live from London!

Attending the 24 hour kirtan this year in New Vrindavan was an amazing experience, and I was really excited therefore, when I heard that another 24 hour kirtan event on an even grander scale was being planned to take place during this holy time of Kartik.

The ‘Global Kartik Kirtan’ has been masterminded by Krishna Devata, a second generation devotee from California, who has empowered a team of volunteers to stage simultaneous kirtans across the world - from Maui to Kyrgyzstan. She hopes that this action will have the effect of ‘activating our international kirtan community, in a simultaneous resounding prayer around the globe, with its source from the heart of Vrindavan.’ The ’source kirtan’ will be performed at Pandavali Kund, near Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan, India, on Ekadasi (Sunday, November 9th). Other locations confirmed so far are:

New York
San Francisco Bay Area
Alachua, Florida
Maui, Hawaii
Vancouver, Canada
Los Angeles, California
Rome, Italy
Moscow, Russia
Tomsk
Novosibirsk
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan

For the pleasure of Sri Sri Radha Londoniswara, graciously hosted by the devotees of Soho Street temple and organised primarily by Kapila and Bimala of the Kulimela Association, we will be holding our own 24 hour kirtan here in London from 12.30 - 12.30 on Saturday 8th until Sunday 9th of November. The first half of the event will also feature a maha harinam through the buzzing Saturday night centre of London, commencing at 7.45 pm. I’m really excited about it, and I hope that if you’re reading this, and you live within travelling distance of London, you’ll try and make it. Though this is largely being organised by Vaishnava youth, the kirtan is open to everyone, and only with everyone’s participation will it truly be a success. If you don’t live in London, why not hold a kirtan closer to where you live? It doesn’t need to be for the full 24 hours - even if everyone only chants together for a few hours, it’s the act of surrounding the globe with the Hare Krishna maha mantra that matters.

If you would like to see the flyer - here it is: Global Kartik Kirtan Flyer

Please come and chant with us - bring instruments if you like!

Japa Group : Endeavor on the Path of Surrender

This is a very nice article from Sacinandana Swami and I am sure there is a lot to add to our spiritual path.

"This little historical story (when Draupadi turned to Krsna for protection when disrobing threatened her) tells us a little bit about endeavor. It´s not enough to just chant Krishna´s name, you need to also surrender. If you just chant without surrender, Krishna does not hear you, but if you chant with surrender, Krishna will hear you and come to your aid. Whose prayers does the Lord hear? Well, the answer to this question is: He hears those prayers that are offered by the devotee who is practiced in the art of saranagati, or looking for shelter. We cannot do much on our own; we are quite helpless. But we can endeavor to take shelter at Krishna´s lotus feet by accepting those things that are favorable and rejecting those things that are unfavorable. We can endeavor in these directions. We can also endeavor to conduct ourselves in a humble way and we can similarly take shelter of Lord Krishna. I have seen in my life and in the lives of many devotees that Krishna seems to wait for the moment when we profoundly approach Him and take shelter. Only then will Krishna listen to our prayers and come to our aid. If there is an empty heart or proud heart that thinks "I can do everything on my own," then Krishna does not rush and does not come, but the moment the devotee endeavors to take shelter at Krishna´s lotus feet and surrender, at that moment Lord Krishna easily rushes to the aid of His devotees. The drama of our life, the history of our life, the particular story of our own journey is always a story about our own decision to surrender to Sri Sri Radha Govinda. This is always at the nucleus of our spiritual endeavor. I would like to ask all of you in this month of Kartik to sincerely think about your endeavors on the path of surrender because it is very necessary to show Lord Krishna that we are not indifferent to His mercy and that we sincerely wish to have His mercy. I ask you to make a plan about how you can conduct your devotional life in such a way that your endeavor to surrender is very strongly manifest."

Madhava Ghosh dasa : The Last Bite

Excerpted from the New Yorker, check out the whole article here.

Is the world’s food system collapsing?
by Bee Wilson

“The World Bank recently announced that thirty-three countries are confronting food crises, as the prices of various staples have soared. From January to April of this year, the cost of rice on the international market went up a hundred and forty-one per cent…

“Paul Roberts is the second author in the past couple of years to publish a book entitled “The End of Food”—the first, by Thomas F. Pawlick, appeared in 2006. Pawlick, an investigative journalist from Ontario, was concerned with such predicaments as the end of the tasty tomato and its replacement by “red tennis balls” lacking in both flavor and nutrients…

“All of these authors agree that the entire system of Western food production is in need of radical change, right down to the spinach… .

“Malthus could not have imagined that demand might increase catastrophically even where populations were static or falling. The problem is not just the number of mouths to feed; it’s the quantity of food that each mouth consumes when there are no natural constraints. As the world becomes richer, people eat too much, and too much of the wrong things—above all, meat…

“Michael Pollan writes that the food business once lamented what it called the problem of the “fixed stomach”—it appeared that demand for food, unlike other products, was inelastic, the amount fixed by the dimensions of the stomach itself, the variety constrained by tradition and habit. In the past few decades, however, American and European stomachs have become as elastic as balloons, and, with the newly prosperous Chinese and Indians switching to Western diets, much of the rest of the world is following suit. “Today, Mexicans drink more Coca-Cola than milk,” Patel reports. Roberts tells us that in India “obesity is now growing faster than either the government or traditional culture can respond,” and the demand for gastric bypasses is soaring.

“We are all too busy being screwed over by the giant corporations to take the time to appreciate “the deeper and subtler pleasures of food.” For Patel, it is a short step from Western consumers “engorged and intoxicated” with cheap processed food to Mexican and Indian farmers committing suicide because they can’t make a living. The “food industry’s pabulum” makes us all cogs in an evil machine…

“Roberts depicts the global food market as a lumbering beast, organized on such a monolithic scale that it cannot adapt to the consequences of its own distortions. In a flexible, responsive market, producers ought to be able to react to a surplus of one thing by switching to making another thing. Industrial agriculture doesn’t work like this. Too many years—and, in the West, too many subsidies—are invested in the setup of big single-crop farms to let producers abandon them when the going gets tough…

“Yet much of what is now eaten in the West is not food so much as, in Michael Pollan’s terms, stuff that’s merely “foodish.” …

“There are in fact hundreds of foodish products in the supermarket that your ancestors simply wouldn’t recognize as food: breakfast cereal bars transected by bright white veins representing, but in reality having nothing to do with, milk; “protein waters” and “nondairy creamer”; cheeselike foodstuffs equally innocent of any bovine contribution; cakelike cylinders (with creamlike fillings) called Twinkies that never grow stale.

“Pollan shows that much of the apparent abundance of choice available to the affluent Western consumer is an illusion. You may spend hours in the supermarket, keenly scrutinizing the labels, but, when it comes down to it, most of what you eat is derived from the high-yield, low-maintenance crops that the food industry prefers to grow, and sells to you in myriad foodish forms.

“You may not think you eat a lot of corn and soybeans,” Pollan writes, “but you do: 75 percent of the vegetable oils in your diet come from soy (representing 20 percent of your daily calories) and more than half of the sweeteners you consume come from corn (representing around 10 percent of daily calories).” You may never consciously allow soy to pass your lips. You shun soy milk and despise tofu. Yet soy will get you in the end, whether as soy-oil mayo and soy-oil fries; ice cream and chocolate emulsified with soy; or chicken fed on soy (“soy with feathers,” as one activist described it to Patel).

“Our insatiable appetites are not simply our own; they have, in no small part, been created for us. This explains, to a certain degree, how the world can be “stuffed and starved” at the same time, as Patel has it. The food economy has created a system in which some have no food options at all and some have too many options, albeit of a somewhat spurious kind…

“It would be futile, therefore, to look to the food system for radical change. The global manufacturers and wholesalers have an interest in continuing to manipulate our desires, feeding our illusions of choice, stoking our colossal hunger. On the other hand, if desires can be manipulated in one direction, why shouldn’t they be manipulated in another, more benign direction? Pollan offers a model of how individual consumers might adjust their appetites: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” As a solution, this is charmingly modest, but it is unlikely to be enough to meet the urgency of the situation. …”

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Govardhana Puja--Celebrated

Today we are celebrating Govardhana Puja at New Raman Reti.  The Deities were offered a new outfit this moring--an Asian silk of red with white, silver and pink (complete with coordinating peacock backdrops).  Greeting was made even more fabulous by the soundtrack (cows...rain..thunder), the strobe lite effecting lightning and the altar decorations.  On top of the sringhasanas was the Samvartaka cloud of devastation.  Rain (plastic-y shiny streamer-y tinsel-y things) was pouring down and the Deities stood atop Govardhana Hill.  Really great decorations.

Madhava Prabhu's huge Sila was on the altar, painted so wonderfully.  More and more
Silas kept arriving, all lovingly decorated by Their devotees.  There was even a waterfall...it must have sounded very tranquil from the Deities' vantage point.

Hardly anyone was at the temple, which I still can't figure out. Maybe everyone was at home doing seva.  Anyway, there was a terrific abhiseka, which me and some girls had the opportunity to make dried fruit garlands for.  So much colorful fruit juice!  The caranamrta tasted like strawberry lassi.  Since the program was scarcely populate, I go to bath Giriraja 5 times.  More mercy.  It kind of reminded me of Gita Nagari, except I would have considered the attendance packed for GN.

I just got done cooking some cooking for the clay pot offerings tonite.  I have pictures from this morning and will try to post them later.

We are having a really great day.  Like being in Vrindavan...but without hoards of local people staring at us and asking to take our picture.  At least they ask.

My Dear Shama Dasi

Please accept my blessings. I beg to thank you very much, for your letter and nice presentations. I was thinking of you since a long time because I have not received any letter from you. I am very pleased with your nice presentation and I have seen the pictures of your son, Samba, also. He is looking very jolly. So raise him nicely in Krishna Consciousness.

Hayagriva was here and we had some very nice talks. I am glad that you are managing New Vrindaban, so do it nicely. Be happy in Krishna Consciousness and be the ideal grihastra. Better to be satisfied with one nice Krishna Conscious child and the rest of your time saved for making advancement in Krsna Consciousness.

You will be glad to know that by the middle of this month I will be going to N.Y. and shortly thereafter surely I will be coming to New Vrindaban, as I have told Hayagriva. I have received one letter of invitation from Kirtanananda Maharaj also. I am always aspiring to eat your nice chopaties, so when I go there, you will have to give me many.

Please offer my blessings to the others. Hoping this will meet you in good health.

Your ever well wisher,

Just in the mail box...

Dr. Syamalal Prabhu from the Bhaktivedanta hospital asked Guru Maharaja to give his right hand and he responded to it. The doctor asked Guru Maharaja to squeeze his hand and Guru Maharaja squeezed his hand. The doctor asked Guru Maharaja to move his legs then he started shaking the legs vigourously. Even the bed started to shake. Therefore the doctor wanted him to stop and Guru Maharaja immediately stopped. Whenever the doctor speaks to Guru Maharaja he opens his eyes and looks at the doctor.

Guru Maharaja is still in a delicate situation and the hospital has strictly ordered not to disturb him.

Revati Raman Prabhu, the Temple President of Tirupati, AP, India one of the senior disciples of Guru Maharaja is rendering a very important service for the care and safety of Guru Maharaja in the hospital by the ICU. Today under the supervision of the doctors and nurses he approached Guru Maharaja to tie a pavitram of Tirupati Balaji Deity. While tying the pavitram on Guru Maharaja's hand Revati Raman Prabhu spoke, "We love you so much. Every one around the world wants you. They are all praying for you and sending so many emails." As Guru Maharaja heard this he opened his eyes looking at Revati Raman prabhu for 2 minutes and raised his left hand pointing to his mouth.

The doctors and nurses were amazed and said that Guru Maharaja perfectly understood what Prabhu said and indicated that he was unable to speak because of the tubes in his mouth.

H.H. Mukunda Goswami : Lord Caitanya's direct reasons for appearing

Lord Caitanya's direct reasons for appearing on earth was to draw
people into constant meditation on the Supreme Lord. Therefore, when He
was a child, he repeatedly acted naughtily and thereby drew everyone's
attention. He chastised brahmanas who claimed He 'broke their
meditation' by distracting them. In reality, however, he was pulling
attention directly onto Him. On such occasions He would sometimes ask,
"Who are you meditating on?"

Kurma dasa : Stormin' Kormin's Big Day

I'm chilling under the overhead fans here in Darwin (Howard Springs, to be precise - the 'Toorak of the Territory', according to mein host). Outside, the cicadas are rubbing whatever they rub and the heat is blistering, even at 9.00 Sunday morning. Still not a drop of monsoon rain. As my host wryly opined, "There'll be a huge blankety-blanking storm the moment you fly out". He could be right.

Friday was spent shopping, and we came home to a whopping brown tree snake to greet us at the back door. This one, to be precise, though our snake did not allow himself the luxury of a photograph, but rather hid for hours behind a bucket.

Brown Tree Snake:

Later that night I encountered another local inhabitant, also perched at the back door. Meet Jabba.

Barf.

Barf.

Barf.

What the hell is wrong with people?

As you can tell, I am totally outraged.

Do you know how difficult it is to find a bar of dark premium chocolate with nuts in it?  Not almonds and cherries.  Not milk chocolate and hazlenut.  I'm talking dark with nuts, any nut. Nothing else.

Well it is near impossible.

But bacon?

No problem.
