Krishna Dharma dasa : Gopinath

Gopinatha (Part one)

By Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur

Text One
gopinath, mama nivedana suno
visayi durjana, sada kama-rata,
kichu nahi mora guna

Gopinath, my Lord, please heed my humble plea.
Self-serving and shameless, immersed in sinfulness,
no virtue will you find within me.

Text Two
gopinath, amara bharasa tumi
tomara carane, loinu sarana,
tomara kinkora ami

Gopinath, I have no other hope than you,
I fall down at your feet, your shelter do I seek,
Your service ever to pursue.

Text Three
gopinath, kemone sodhibe more
na jani bhakati, karme jada-mati,
porechi somsara-ghore

Gopinath, I do not see how you will free me,
Devoid of devotion, absorbed in ambition,
fallen in fearful misery.

Text Four
gopinath, sakali tomara maya
nahi mama bala, jnana sunirmala,
swadina nahe e kaya

Gopinath, all I see here is illusion.
No knowledge I possess, completely powerless,
caught up in worldly confusion.

Text Five
gopinath, niyata carane sthana
mage e pamara, kandiya kandiya,
korohe karuna dana

Gopinath, at your feet forever keep me.
Weeping incessantly, a sinner though I be,
I pray and plead for your mercy.

Text Six
gopinath, tumi to’ sakali paro
durjane tarite, tomara sakati,
ke ache papira aro

Gopinath, you can act completely freely.
All sinners can you save, your grace I therefore crave,
for what sinner is worse than me?

Text Seven
gopinath, tumi krpa-parabara
jivera karane, asiya prapance,
lila koile subistara

Gopinath, ocean of complete compassion.
Your pastimes you display, to free us from the sway,
of ignorance and illusion.

Text Eight
gopinath, ami ki dose dosi
asura sakala, pailo carana,
vinoda thakilo bosi’

Gopinath, so sunk am I in sinfulness,
That though the demons rise, into eternal skies
I stay here steeped in worldliness.

Partha-sarathi das, ISKCON Iraq : Battlefield Bhajans Vo. 26

Battlefield Bhajans Vol. 26

written in Olympia, WA

Dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Halloween Krishna’s

We have a tradition in my unit to dress up every year before Halloween and go for a run around base. Since it was so cold, I decided to not dress up and stay warm. As the first sergeant told everyone with a costume to come in front of the formation and we are going to vote on who has the best costume. Their were so many people dressed up, we had basketball players, skateboarders, a cat burglar; even two soldiers dressed up as mormons compete with pamphlets. One by one all the soldiers came out and everyone cheered to vote. After everyone was judged we wondered why the 1SG had not announced a winner. She said,” so we have one more costume but it is a group.” As soon as she said that, three soldiers walk up dressed as devotees, chanting the maha mantra and with books in their hands!!!! Wow, everyone was cheering so loud, some soldiers started to follow along. When finally after six or seven minutes everyone quieted down, the first sergeant asked, ” Who are you guys supposed to be?”  One soldier stepped forwarded and announced proudly, ” We are servants of God, here to give you this simple method of purification.” The second soldier stepped forward and stated that they were SFC Sonnenberg and his friends. I was blown away because all these boys were atheists, and they did a lot of research on Krsna Consciousness. One explained to me that they wanted to dress up in far out costumes that no one would think of. They remember me walking around Iraq in a dhoti and thought thats it. But as they researched more and more and got more and more into character they felt at home in devotional cloth. They took some books from me today and are thinking of visiting the temple sometime.

Squadron Commander

I am almost finished with this commitment, I am just waiting for department of the Army to sign and send back. I was at a ceremony for our outgoing command sergeant major (csm) and the squadron commander came up to me and asked about my status. As I explained he told me that he is actually sad to see me leaving. He started laughing and we were sharing stories back and forth of my time under his command. One comment he made was that he would never thought in twenty-three years of service one of his go to sergeants would be a Hare Krsna and that he has a new respect for them. I thanked him for signing my paperwork and recommending approval. He said,” I didn’t want to, but I though who am I to decide this kids future. He has given this organization so much over the years and here is my chance to do a good deed, to help you move closer to your spiritual goals. Weighing all the facts, I though I was being very self centered and selfish, and right away signed.” He had to leave but before he left, I told him I woulD never forget what he did for me, and if he ever needs anything, please let me know. He smirked and said, ” Put in a good word with Krsna for me.”

Sadhana:

Japa: I am still trying to strengthen my chanting, to feel the mantra in my heart. Our mind is so confused, just when we think we are in control of it during chanting, there it goes again. I am chanting and trying to call out to Krsna and beg Him to engage me in the service of Him. (25 daily)
Reading: Since it is Kartika, I decided to start over with spiritual life, and by that I mean re read the Bhagavad-Gita, and do so in a more absorbed mood. I feel that even though I read the BG a few times, I have missed many key points. Also I reading some Srila Prabhupada nectar everyday. Now we are reading Siksmrta Vol. 2. I love these letters, they bring so much clarity to our lives. But when reading I have to remind myself that Prabhupada gave instructions to individuals according to their time place and circumstance.
Memorization of Verses: I was focusing more on this and then stopped, but thanks to HG Dravida Prabhu association, I am focused again on it. I pick a verse Sunday evening, memorize during the week, then offer to Their Lordships Sunday morning.  I pick verses that inspire me, and I can use in daily preaching.
Sankritan: BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!!!!! Get out there and distribute these books. So many people never heard of Krsna, then why don’t we go out more? It is time to give this nectar to the public and beg them with all sincerity to take spiritual life seriously. Our tradition is a preaching tradition. Take one hour out of your week and help humanity, we all make so many excuses about why we cannot go out and distribute books, but who are we actually cheating?

My scores to date:
maha big: 10
big hard: 16
big soft: 10
small: 193

We beg of all the devotees to pray for us, that we can fully dedicate our life to Lord Caitanya. That we can fully surrender to our Spiritual Master. That we can have the determination to push forward and preach this glorious message.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada

Japa Group : All the Best from My Heart

This is a nice story about Sacinandana Swami's experiences with chanting. There are some nice realisations which may enlighten your japa.

"Today, I chanted, prayed, sang, and deeply connected at Govinda Kunda. What an atmosphere!
Before me the kund, or pond, and towering behind—tall and majestic—Giriraja
Govardhana. A cool breeze moves the leaves of the trees of desire whose arms dance in the wind as if offering arotika to Radha Govinda. This breeze cools my body and mind as well as those of my roommate—a small bat who listens intensely to my japa and singing.
As the counting beads go by—indicating numbers of rounds way beyond my quota—a thought manifests: How can I connect with the Lord during my chanting?
I recall the three points of Bhaktivinoda Thakura and apply them:
1. Remember the name is Krishna.
2. Meditate about the meaning of the name while chanting.
3. Cry out to Krishna—beg for mercy while taking the name.
All of a sudden a herd of about fifteen or twenty surabhi cows walks by the kunda.
Whenever cows walk next to or on the top of Giriraja, you know that Krishna walks behind them.
Oh, if I could only see spiritually! May my blindness one day disappear by the power of the dust of Vraja!
In the evening I go to a tree where a great siddha mahatma (perfected soul) chanted before me. At the time he sat there, the local residents of Govinda Kunda had to get all their groceries from traveling merchants. No ghee if the merchant did not come that day.
One day the priest of the local Radha-Gopinatha temple went to the siddha mahatmain a panic:
“Maharaja, there is no more ghee in the kitchen. How will I cook the puris for the deities? The merchant will not come for another week.”
“No problem,” answered the mahatma. “Use the water of Govinda Kunda to fry the puris.”
The pujari did so, and for an entire week the water turned into ghee to fry the puris. No problem in Vrindavan for those who wish to serve.
After a week, when the merchant arrived, the pujari asked the mahatma if he should buy ghee or continue to use the water of the kunda.
The mahatma answered firmly: “Yes, buy ghee but for each time you took from the Lord’s Govinda Kunda, you must offer the same amount of ghee back into the pond. We are Krishna’s servants. He should never be allowed to become our servant!”
All these impressions come to us in millions of forms in Vrindavan, giving us the impetus to connect deeply with our Lord.
Oh, even a short time in Vrindavan is therapeutic, healing, and always totally amazing!
That’s it! Sorry for my being short, I got sick when I came and I struggle these days.... All the best from my heart." Vrindavana, October 2008

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Petha to the People

Brajajana sent me the following recipe in response to a pic I posted elsewhere of an uber loki. It's for the Indian sweet by the name of petha. I can't say that I endorse all the ingredients in the recipe (I am so not into alum powder), or that I like petha. In fact, I really don't like petha. Brajajana may be the only person I know who actually has willingly had more than one piece.

Nevertheless, I thought it would be interesting to post the recipe.

If you have had any experience with petha, positive or negative, please feel free to post it in the comments section.

PETHA

Ingredients:

• 1 kg White Pumpkin (firm)
• 2 tsp Calcium Hydroxide (kitchen lime)
• ½ tsp Alum Powder (Fitkari)
• 3 drops Screwpine Essence (Kewra)
• 800 gm Sugar
• 1 tsp Rose Water
• 2 cups Water

How to make Petha:

• Dissolve alum powder in water (½ cup) and keep it aside.
• Dissolve kitchen lime in 1 litre water, strain with a clean cloth twice if required, and keep it aside.
• Wash, peel and deseed the pumpkin. Cut it into 25 mm. (1") squares and prick each piece with a fork all over.
• Soak the pieces in lime water for 30 minutes.
• Drain the lime water and wash the pieces thoroughly under clean running water for 2-3 minutes.
• Put the pumpkin pieces in a bowl. Pour alum water on the pieces and shake the bowl so that all the pieces get evenly coated.
• Drain the alum water. Take sufficient amount of water in a heavy bottomed pan and boil the pumpkin pieces till they become soft and transparent.
• In the meantime, make syrup of sugar and water of 2 thread consistency.
• Put drained pumpkin pieces in the sugar syrup and boil till syrup becomes thick again.
• Turn off the flame and take out the pieces.
• Keep covered the syrup with a mesh, overnight.
• Again boil the syrup and add the pieces.
• Cook it for 3-4 minutes and turn off the flame. Let the pieces cool.
• Now sprinkle Kewra and rose water over the pieces. Allow petha to cool completely. Refrigerate it.
• Petha is ready to serve.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA : Duty of every Indian

One of the Indian guests had a question.
"Prabhupada, you are giving a very simple process. Why there are no Indians coming? They are exposed to Krsna from their birth, still they are not interested. Nobody wants to listen."

Srila Prabhupada answered as he had in Toronto.
"Because they have become bada-sahib. Especially in the foreign countries, they become bada-sahib. So that is the misfortune of India. They are giving up their culture and being misguided. So if they actually feel that they must maintain their own culture, then it is not difficult. It is the duty of every Indian, as Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that. If that mentality is developed, that, 'In India we were born, we have got the greatest culture, recognized by all the world. So I must make my life successful by taking this culture and distribute it to the whole world.' That is real Indian culture."

He told his guest that they are thinking themselves poverty stricken, but it is only because they have given up their own culture. "Otherwise, there is no question of poverty stricken. So anyway this is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's message, that every Indian should take advantage of the great culture, Vedic culture, and make his life successful. And after acquiring mature knowledge he should distribute the knowledge throughout the whole world."

In reply to the man's inquiry as to how to get them interested, Srila Prabhupada repeated, "By preaching. If you preach, then you'll meet with so many obstacles, and you have to prepare yourself how to meet the obstacles. Then you become strong preacher. Resistance. There is no difficulty, but if there is difficulty, atheist class of men, and it is very difficult, so take innocent, those who are actually eager to know. Everyone should be inquisitive to know about the Absolute Truth, Brahman, but education is different nowadays. People are interested with hammer, how to play on hammer, that's all, technology. There is no question of Brahman. Let Brahman go to hell, now take out the hammer. That Russian emblem, hammer and scythe? That's all."

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA : Prostitutes!

I thought this was interesting!

vāramukhyāś ca śataśo
yānais tad-darśanotsukāḥ
lasat-kuṇḍala-nirbhāta-
kapola-vadana-śriyaḥ
SB 1.11.19

Translation

At the same time, many hundreds of well-known prostitutes began to proceed on various vehicles. They were all very eager to meet the Lord, and their beautiful faces were decorated with dazzling earrings, which enhanced the beauty of their foreheads.

Purport

We may not hate even the prostitutes if they are devotees of the Lord. Even to date there are many prostitutes in great cities of India who are sincere devotees of the Lord. By tricks of chance one may be obliged to adopt a profession which is not very adorable in society, but that does not hamper one in executing devotional service to the Lord. Devotional service to the Lord is uncheckable in all circumstances. It is understood herewith that even in those days, about five thousand years ago, there were prostitutes in a city like Dvārakā, where Lord Kṛṣṇa resided. This means that prostitutes are necessary citizens for the proper upkeep of society. The government opens wine shops, but this does not mean that the government encourages the drinking of wine. The idea is that there is a class of men who will drink at any cost, and it has been experienced that prohibition in great cities encouraged illicit smuggling of wine. Similarly, men who are not satisfied at home require such concessions, and if there is no prostitute, then such low men will induce others into prostitution. It is better that prostitutes be available in the marketplace so that the sanctity of society can be maintained. It is better to maintain a class of prostitutes than to encourage prostitutes within society. The real reformation is to enlighten all people to become devotees of the Lord, and that will check all kinds of deteriorating factors of life.

Tues. Oct.28/08 - Burlington, Ontario

I went to a medical clinic on a road called, “Walker’s Line”. Few people walk here in this well established community which would be a marathon two days trek to Niagara falls. I made my way to the third floor to see the receptionist confirming my appointment for a medical check up and in particular to look at my blood pressure level. The cordial receptionist asked for my medical card which I produced and then asked if I had a family doctor. “I don’t have a family so I guess I don’t have a doctor.” (laughter). “I’m single, I’m a monk.”

With a smile looking at my robes she said, “ Oh pardon my ignorance!” She got curious and so did the specialists who did the reading of my pulse and blood pressure a few minutes later. They had me ride on one of these tread-mill type of cycles. I’m accustomed to walking only so this was a change for me. Our conversations were all on a happy note and being Diwali day, the day for honoring Ram’s triumphant return to his kingdom I proceeded to offer a small gift of a candle to those who medically assisted me,.

Our guru Srila Prabhupada, wrote to one of his students that one can celebrate the occasion with lamps or lights. Hence the medical office got a little taste of a happy celebratory day on the Vedic calendar.

By the way my blood pressure reads at a normal level and I attribute much of that to the regular movement of the body on foot.

Mon. Oct.27/08 - Toronto, Ontario

Halloween approaches and communities across North America are gearing up for an experiential ghastliness. The window displays of shops cater to the public demand of hob goblins and the like make their presence in this windy leaf tossed season. Lord Siva, the god of dissolution, keeps bhutas or ghosts as his companions demonstrating a compassion he has for such disembodied beings. It is their good fortune to be able to keep his good company if they choose to.

Most of us want nothing to do with such confused beings but as a person trying to cultivate spirituality , a level of pureness, it appears appropriate to have some feeling for ghosts who are spirits suspended in an existence they don’t want to be in. Ghosts are not myths. I have seen several occasions of people being momentarily under their influence. They usually just want a little attention. Chanting is a positive approach to dealing with them.

Going back over thirty-five years when our temple/ashram was located at 187 Gerrard St. one of our monks decided to check out the trap door to the attic. A dusty old book was discovered among other things and brought down. From that day on a subtle personality began to disturb in particular the women of our ashram on the second floor. It went on for nights on end.

In ‘96 when I was just completing my first cross country walk, my support guy was attacked by a ghost on two consecutive evenings, once in our tiny mobile home. It took some effort to pull him out of the ghost’s grasp.

When our guru, Srila Prabhupada spent some days with his students at John Lennon’s place at Tittenhurst, John’s hired hand approached Prabhupada about what to do with the ghost haunting his wife daily. Prabhupada and his followers went to the home of the worker and chanted mantras to relieve the ghost.

H.H. Bhaktimarg Swami : Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Sun, Oct.26/08 - Burlington, Ontario

There has been restless sleep for me the last two nights. It’s not to do with jet lag but more to do with the unsettling circumstance of our god-brother’s critical condition. Fortunately Jayapataka Swami’s condition has improved as he is showing signs of being conscious. The collective prayers world-wide has proved fruitful. Let’s continue the prayer.

For the evening I was hosted in the home of a friendly doctor. Jagannatha Misra (Dr. Vikas Pandith) his wife Saci and their two sons drove me to their home from the Toronto temple ashram last night after having participated in a well- orchestrated wedding reception for a very special couple. As I have explained prior, monks are permitted to be involved in such events. Newlyweds ask for blessings and monks feel obliged to offer them.

I had taken an early stroll along the westerly lake Ontario coast in Burlington. I came upon the replica home of Thayendanegea also known as Joseph Brant (1743-1807). Known for his effort to regain land for his people. As a Mohawk chief of the Wolf Clan he had become a fearless warrior during the time of the American Revolution as a British ally. He was perhaps the most popular native of his generation. He was extremely influential for his time and built this handsome two story home where he maintained about twenty white and black servants and slaves. He was interesting, because he defended his people the famed Six Nations, knew all their languages, became adept at English and became a formal member of the freemasons and much more.

Those times were different and who are we to judge under the circumstances of the past? I admit being a bit of a history buff. The harsh circumstances under which people lived in those times can be an impetus for appreciating our great comforts of today.

The wind at this early morning hour seemed to pass here before carrying the past to another domain. The sliver of a moon set in the open sky above the water appeared like a yogi’s eye lid, half open, watching the past and present together.

ISKCON Melbourne : Jayapataka Swami update 30-Oct-08, 8.30pm

From Ratnavali...

This afternoon the doctors did Tracheotomy. Tracheotomy is a surgical opening in the trachea (windpipe) that forms a temporary opening to make breathing easier. They have inserted the ventilator tube into this hole instead of sending the tube through the mouth.

Since Guru Maharaja is unable to breathe by himself they cannot remove the ventilator. They cannot keep the tubes through the mouth for a long time and it can catch infection. Guru Maharaja also feels uncomfortable with the tubes. Therefore the panel of doctors decided to go for tracheotomy.

Compared to yesterday the consciousness level is down today. There could be different factors. They will wait and see tomorrow. Apart from this the other parameters are stable.

We do not know how many more days it might take for Guru Maharaja to breathe by himself and to be out of ventilator. It is all up to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna now. Whatever happened so far is a miracle and we need more miracles for Guru Maharaja to completely come out of this situation successfully.

Here what scientist William R. Corliss (55 books and a consultant to

wrote in 2000:
* Ganges water does not putrefy, even after long
periods of storage. River water begins to putrefy when lack of oxygen
promotes the growth of anaerobic bacteria, which produce the telltale
smell of stale water.
* British physician, C.E. Nelson observed that
Ganges water taken from the Hooghly -- one of its dirtiest mouths -- by
ships returning to England remained fresh throughout the voyage.

ISKCON Melbourne : Restoration of Prabhupada House

The temple maintenance crew continues to restore the hallways of Prabhupada House.
Thumb: Michael-working-on-the-wall
Michael in the upper hallway
Michael has been applying unique Lincrusta moulded wallpaper. You can see the textured surface running along the lower wall at left. Lincrusta was first produced in 1877, the time Prabhupada House was constructed. Its purpose was to decorate and to protect the lower reaches of the walls with hard wearing surfaces. The original builders made their own design by cutting & pasting existing patterns, so Michael has had to follow in their footsteps.

After thirty years of service, the red carpet that Srila Prabhupada and his disciples have decorated with the dust of their feet has been taken up. Today the painting crew has been repainting the stairway's wooden treads, and the walls of the hallways. Prabhupada House ki jaya.

Avadhuta-priya dd, Jaipur, India : For Women By Women

As I am sitting and writing a news article about safety of women living in India, I want to share with you an article from the web, which I think presents a cool idea. It is an old one (28th September 2007, "The HINDU" Business Lane), neverthless a valuable one. It presents female driving force - in it's actual meaning!

Driving Forsche
A new taxi service in Mumbai powered by women, for women.
WFS

Hers: The Forsche taxi service boasts a team of well-educated, reliable and courteous drivers.

Surekha Kadapa Bose

Every second Saturday of the month, a small office near the City Light cinema in Mumbai comes alive with peals of laughter, excited chatter and lively discussions.

Eighteen women drivers, part of an all-women taxi service called ‘Forsche’, are busy exchanging notes and narrating their experiences of the month gone by over a sumptuous meal.

“It was in December 2006 that I hit upon the idea of starting a pre-paid taxi service for women in this metro. It was just a thought and I wasn’t too sure of the reaction to my venture. But I knew that I had hit bull’s eye when I received a tremendous response for the first full-page advertisement I placed in an eveninger asking for competent women drivers,” says Revathi Roy, 45, the brain behind Forsche.

‘For she’

Incidentally, ‘Forsche’ has been derived from the word Porsche — the German sports car firm — but is spelt with an ‘F’ and pronounced as ‘for she’. Of course, Revathi’s service motto is — ‘By the women, for the women and of the women.’

“As a frequent taxi passenger, I would find it irritating that some drivers would stare at me in the rear-view mirror. Also, I wasn’t too comfortable with the lack of cleanliness of regular cabs and even the way the drivers drove,” remarks Revathi. With her personal savings and some money from friends and relatives, Revathi raised funds to the tune of Rs 14 lakh. Friends and well-wishers bought her the cars and she pays the EMI of these cars plus Rs 1,000 extra to the car owners. Despite the experience of running a successful business — her family owns Windors, an outlet for windows and doors accessories — Revathi was pleasantly surprised at how quickly word spread about her venture. Forsche taxis, the fleet comprises 18 air-conditioned white Maruti Versa cars, are cleaned daily so that the passengers don’t inhale stale air. In addition, Forsche offers its women-only passengers a mini make-up kit that includes a mirror, nail polish remover, cotton buds, clippers and nail files. There’s a selection of magazines and newspapers on board so that passengers are pleasantly engaged during long rides.

Each taxi is also fitted with a walkie-talkie so that the drivers are in constant contact with each other and also with the head office, manned by Revathi. Interestingly, these cabs also double as advertisements on wheels. Currently, the women’s magazine, Marie Claire, has had a pink stripe painted on the taxis, which gives them an attractive and feminine appearance.

“We have a six-month contract with Marie Claire,” explains Revathi, who began the Forsche service this year, on March 8, which is International Women’s Day. “I will later be tying up with Hindustan Lever for an all-India sponsorship.” These good-looking vehicles stand out from among the regular yellow-black cabs in the city. But it’s not just the cabs that are trendy. The drivers are, too.

Dressed in pink or lavender kurta (tunic) and blue trousers, an ink-blue scarf tied Girl Guide fashion around their necks completes the very elegant and posh look. “Not only do our passengers like our looks and that of our taxis, they also enjoy the music we play,” says Annhaita Mistry, 45, a graduate and one of the senior-most drivers. That is another plus point of Forsche — the drivers are well educated and can speak fluent English, Hindi and Marathi. A few are also conversant in Gujarati.

Love of driving

And all of them are passionate about driving. The drivers take home Rs 9,500.

Prachi Jaiswal, 28, a graphic designer from the J.J. School of Arts in Mumbai, is the latest entrant at Forsche. Says Prachi, “I have always loved driving. When I got this chance to indulge in my passion, earn and also work on my freelance design work, I jumped at the offer.” Some drivers pursue higher studies, working part-time with Forsche over the weekends. The 24-hour, door-to-door service is a big hit with the women of Mumbai. One has to just pick up the phone and dial 09323208277 or 09892819245 or 022-24324161 to arrange a cool ride. Forsche’s customers also include outstation women who fly down to the city for work. “They call up and ask for the taxi to be at the airport to pick them up at a particular time,” Revathi says. For instance, Bangalore’s Swarupa Gangadharan always books in advance and enjoys a comfortable ride with Forsche.

Then there is 81-year-old Dr Nalinee Odak, a former physician at ESIS’s MG Memorial Hospital in Parel, who likes to engage a Forsche. “Being a senior citizen, I found it difficult to move around. But with Revathi’s taxis, which have reliable, well-behaved and courteous women drivers, I have started travelling around the city with ease. Now I use their services at least two to three times a month to visit my sister at Walkeshwar, or my friend at Dadar,” she says.

Comfort’s price

But the comfort comes at a price. Forsche charges Rs 200 per hour. Revathi concedes, “Our services are 20 per cent higher than other taxis. But with us, women can relax and enjoy the ride without having to worry about their plunging necklines as there are no gawking male drivers looking in the rear-view mirrors.” The facilities are only available to women, though. No man can ride in a Forsche taxi. Not even husbands or sons, though children up to 12 years are welcome. “The family can always hire a regular taxi,” suggests Revathi.

In the last six months, these drivers and their regular customers have become an extended family that meets often and shares benefits. Any tips earned are put into a common kitty, a ‘handi’ (clay pot).

“We break the handi every second Saturday and distribute the money equally among all the 18 drivers. Every driver makes an extra Rs 1,000 - 2,000 a month from these tips,” says Revathi. The venture has already broken even. “From next month I hope to make profits,” says Revathi, whose last six months have been fraught with many personal tragedies.

She lost her husband, her mother and her grandfather. Revathi credits her family for her accomplishment. “The immense support that I have got from my parents-in-law and my three children — Satyajit (21), Shurojit (18), Shubhojit (12) — has made my venture very successful,” says the petite but strong-willed entrepreneur. What are her future plans for Forsche? Having tasted success, Revathi wants to expand her business to Delhi and Bangalore. In fact, she has already set up the Delhi office and her eldest son has begun the initial groundwork. Here’s hoping she has a smooth ride.

Arcanam: Worship of the Deity : DIY Deity Jewelry: Bracelets- Part 2

Beaded Elastic Bracelets
These bracelets are extremely versatile, they are my favourite for Jagannatha, Laddu Gopal and Gaura Nitai. These bracelets are so versatile I have made them for all my deities.
First of all, the supplies you require for these bracelets are as follows:
  1. Crimp Beads (these are optional, but they help make the bracelets stronger)
  2. Pliers
  3. Elastic Jewelry Cord
  4. Beads of your choice (using different colours and shapes can create different looking styles using this technique)
  5. Scissors

Step 1: Cut a generous length of the elastic jewelry cord and tie a knot at the end. Next string on the crimp bead followed by the beads.

Step 2: Feed the unknotted end of the jewelry cord back through the crimp bead (in the opposite direction) to complete the bracelet.

Step 3: Use the pliers to 'crush' the crimp bead securing the bracelet. Alternatively, you can eliminate the crimp bead and just knot the cord however due to the stress put on the bracelet when stretched over the deity's hands the crimp beads tend to hold up better over the long run. However, for Jagganatha and Laddu Gopal I find knotting works best as the bracelets can be visible from all sides and they do not need to be stretched as much. Finally, trim off the excess jewelry cord.

The finished product, I've found using different shapes and colours and sizes of beads works well with this technique. Also For my Gaura Nitai I like to use two bracelets with different sized beads.

Gauranga Kishore das - USA : Bolo Giriraj Maharaj Ki Jay!

Last night we had a wonderful Govardhan Puja Celebration, you can see the rest of the photos here.

After the festival I thinking how wonderful it is to be in the association of loving devotees and I was thinking about everyone is trying to have a good time, they go out to restaurants, bars, clubs, and parties but there is never a party where everyone leaves happy. Especially in the modern context when the center of the party is sex and intoxication practically everyone leaves completely frustrated but last night it was so wonderful to see how happy everyone was. Everyone left completely satisfied even the devotees who stayed up past mid night cleaning up and had to go to work the next day.

Festivals are the spiritual world, loving friends, chanting, dancing, feasting, and all with Krishna in the center.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Irrelevance

“The Bhagavad-gita informs us that in this body there is a proprietor — the spirit soul. I am the proprietor of my body, and other souls are the proprietors of their bodies. I say “my hand,” but not “I hand.” Since it is “my hand,” I am different from the hand, being its owner. Similarly, we speak of “my eye,” “my leg,” “my” this, “my” that. In the midst of all these objects which belong to me, where am I?

“The search for the answer to this question is the process of meditation. In real meditation, we ask, “Where am I? What am I?” We cannot find the answers to these questions by any material effort, and because of this all the universities are setting these questions aside. They say, “It is too difficult a subject.” Or they brush it aside: ‘It is irrelevant.’ “

Journey of Self Discovery 2.3: The Unseen Controller

“Are monks and hippies and poets relevant? No, we are deliberately irrelevant. We live with an ingrained irrelevance which is proper to every human being. The marginal [person] accepts the basic irrelevance of the human condition, an irrelevance which is manifested above all by the fact of death. The marginal person, the monk, the displaced person, the prisoner, all these people live in the presence of death, and the office of the monk or the marginal person, the meditative person or the poet is to go beyond death even in this life, to go beyond the dichotomy of life and death and to be, therefore, a witness to life. “

ISKCON Melbourne : Relocating to Pune

I travelled from Mumbai to Pune this morning to spend some time with Damodara, Vrndavanesvari, Harshal and Vaisnavi. My driver Sanjay, was arranged by Mitesh's family who kindly gave me the use of their vehicle. I ended up driving the last thirty kilometres myself since Sanjay was falling asleep. Better that than becoming another statistic in the road mortality rate in India. Judging by a couple of the wrecks we saw on the way it is a common occurrence on what is in my experience one of the better roads in India.

It seems I passed the test. Just as we arrived at the outskirts of Pune Sanjay asked me whether we drive on the left hand side of the road in Australia. I couldn't exactly find out his reasoning since his English and my Oriyan weren't that good.

He comes from a small village near Jagannatha Puri called Nirakar Puri which is, I was told by Bhaktarupa, the hometown of His Holiness Bhakti Purusottama Swami. Nirakara means "without form" or "formless" in Sanskrit and of course describes the impersonal aspect of Brahman. Isn't it wonderful that even the name of your home town reminds you of the Lord even in His impersonal aspect? Much better than truly impersonal names like Albert Park and St Kilda, although I guess Albert was once a king but I do know there is no saint called Kilda.

After having gotten somewhat used to keeping in the right hand lane and passing on the left, all with the obligatory horn honking at the right spots, most notably when you are just about to pass or be passed, Sanjay asked me another question, "Prabhu do you have a driver license?"

Sorry, Kurma I didn't get any pictures. I'll try to rustle some up tomorrow.

ISKCON Melbourne : Jayapataka Swami update 30-Oct-08

30-Oct-08, 10:00 am report

Guru Maharaja was given sedatives yesterday in the night as he wants the tubes to be removed. The tubes can be removed only until he is able to breathe normally.

Today in the morning his conscious level is down a bit. They are taking him to the CT scan and then we could have some clear picture.

Devotees are asked to keep on praying especially at this most critical moment.

30-Oct-08, 12.30 noon

CT scan report is positive. The report shows the same situation as the day one and nothing new. Guru Maharaja is coming back to conscious again like yesterday. When Gopal Krishna Maharaja came to visit Guru Maharaja, Guru Maharaja took Gopal Krishna Maharaja's hand and put it on his head and had tears in his eyes.

The only biggest hurdle right now is his respiratory system. If that functions well then they could remove the ventilator.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada : Govardhana Puja Celebrations!

On Wednesday, October 29th, ISKCON Toronto celebrated Govardhana Puja. Festivities began with an intimate 6:00 pm arati which was followed by the singing of the Damodarastakam prayers, during which devotees offered lamps to Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha. The program then continued with a class by HG Rupanuga das about the wonderful pastime of Lord Krsna lifting Govardhana Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrndavana.

The temple room was transformed by a large replica of Govardhana Hill made of halava which was beautifully decorated with fruits and sweets. The offerings to Govardhana Hill kept growing as devotees continued to arrive throughout the program.

After the class, devotees were led on parikrama (circumambulation) of Govardhana Hill accompanied by exuberant kirtan which led into an ecstatic 8:00 pm arati. When the doors opened for this final arati, devotees were treated to a special darshan as Ksira-Chora Gopinatha was presented with a new golden cowherd staff.

The evening was capped off with a sumptuous prasadam feast that was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to all the devotees that helped prepare Govardhan Hill and the delicious offerings.

Sankirtana das, USA : Thinking Things Through

A hard rain fell, pounding the asphalt, collecting here and there in puddles and running into streams, and without a bus in sight. Five men stood forlorn, lost in their thoughts, waiting and wondering. Somehow it surfaced that they were all trying to get to the polls in time to cast their votes, and so they all decided to chip in for a cab. There was Joe the Plumber, Joe Six Pack, Joe Camel, Joe the Bartender, and Joe Mamma. The cabbie also happened to be a Joe – Joe Biden. But he was a strange guy in a Stephen King sort of way. The passengers each settled into their seats and tried to relax as their cab sped through the night.

Joe Six Pack was the first one to break the silence with a chuckle. “Ain’t this something. I haven’t voted in years and years. Usually to bombed out to vote. Didn’t even care about voting. Didn’t even know who was running. But when I found out that Obama might get into the White House, I had to vote. I said to myself “Joe Six Pack, it is your civic duty to vote. Sarah Palin is counting on you.” The last time I voted was when I was sober in Nebraska, years before I moved out this way.”

“Are you registered in the state?” inquired Joe Camel.

A confused looked appeared on Joe Six Pack’s face. “Registered??? What the…!!!”

Joe Mamma had a sudden realization, “If Obama got in, it shouldn’t be called the White House any more. Them blacks are always ruining things, looking for hand outs, bumming nickels and dimes, whatever. They are gonna ruin the whole economy. And just when I was about to land a job. Why should they get any special deals. It’s them and the Jews that’s spoiling everything… and the Latinos… and the Catholics… and the chinks in China whose taking away all the jobs. Obama is in cahoots with them. He’s a commie Marxist. Probably wants to raise taxes so he can send our hard earned wealth to China. That’ll be the day – over my dead body.”

Joe Camel budded in “And what about the gays. Can you imagine if the gays and lesbians took over. There wouldn’t be any more children to carry things on. Nobody goin to the car races, foot ball games… no kids around to see Saw XX. The seats would all be empty. Something has got to be done! I mean, what’s going to happen to traditional family values. Heck, I’m all for marriage. Been married three times myself. But you think Obama cares!”

“But the worst thing,” Joe the Bartender added, “is that Obama would pull us out of Iraq. To bring home the troops now??? It doesn’t make any sense. Especially with the job market the way it is. I still got my job because most people have their priorities straight. But has Obama ever even been in a bar? Bush knew what he was doing – creating lots of jobs and a cash flow to the right people. Spreading the wealth around to the Blackwater guys and Halliburton. And now it’s going to those fat cats on Wall Street. All these guys, when they come into my bar, they can really put it away. And then, in the natural God given course of things there’s what I call “the trickle down effect.” See, Reagan had it right. It’s just the way God arranged for things. But this Obama, I don’t know what he’s thinking! The guy’s a wimp. Somebody’s got to stand up for the freakin rights of the free world.”

Joe the Plumber was unusually silent. “McCain’s gettin my vote,” was all he could muster, and the rest of the group mumbled in agreement.

All the while, Joe Biden the cabbie had been listening intently, peering into what seemed to be an endless void, driving through the mother of all rainfalls as the windshield wipers worked frantically. He wanted to speak up in the worst way, but he bit his lip. All he knew is that he couldn’t let this bunch get to the polls any time soon. His man was Obama, and five less votes for McCain surely couldn’t hurt. He wouldn’t have to say anything, but he’d have the last laugh. The trip was just going to take a little longer than anybody expected. He decided to take the long way around, head over to the east side of town, and across the bridge at San Luis Rey. But he did not know that his cab would be on the bridge as flood waters swept it away. And paying the cab fare, which none of them had anyways, turned out to be unnecessary.

“In this world there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has achieved this enjoys the self within himself in due course of time.” Bhagavad Gita 4:38

We've heard that the sky is blue because it's a reflection of Lord
Krsna's body. Modern science probably wouldn't agree. Here are some
things Srila Prabhupada said about this (excerpted from a lecture in
Srimad Bhagavatam 7.9.9 in Montreal on 4 July 1968: "Yes. Krsna is
bluish. Krsna's color is the sky. When you see the clear sky, bluish
sky, are you not very happy? ,Krsna's body, there is a ray,
brahmajyoti. That brahmajyoti is reflected in the sky. That brahmajyoti
is outside this material sky, but that is being reflected. Therefore
the sky's color, it appears bluish."

Kurma dasa : Spicy Bengali Potatoes

all sorts of spuds:

D from Adelaide called me on the phone the other day asking me if it was ok if he wrote out one of his favourite recipes from my book 'Cooking with Kurma' to give to a friend. Not only did I say it was ok, I even sent him an electronic version of the recipe.

D. wrote back:

"I'm blown away by the fact I was able to talk to you on the phone. I've been a friend of yours in spirit since I first saw your TV series on SBS years ago and I couldn't get a copy of your book fast enough. I fowarded your email to my friend T. Thank you for imparting the fruits of your life's work. No doubt you have brought a bit of happiness into the lives of lots of people. That works out to a lot of happiness, over all."

That made me me feel very happy. Here's the recipe, by the way:

Spicy Bengali Potatoes

This is a delicious, dry-textured potato dish with multi-levels of subtle flavours. Avoid over boiling the potatoes.

PREPARATION AND COOKING TIME: about 20 minutes YIELD: enough for 4 persons

500g washed small new potatoes 2 teaspoons chopped, fresh ginger 3 fresh green chilies, seeded and chopped 1⁄2 cup yogurt 2 teaspoons coriander powder 2 teaspoons salt 1⁄2 teaspoon turmeric powder 1⁄4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 1⁄2 teaspoons sugar 2 tablespoons ghee 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 10 fresh curry leaves 1⁄8 teaspoon cinnamon powder 1⁄8 teaspoon clove powder 1⁄8 teaspoon cardamom powder 3 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves.

Place the whole potatoes in a large saucepan of water. Bring to the boil over full heat and cook the potatoes until they are just tender. Drain the potatoes, cool them a little, and peel them. Cut them into 2.5cm (1-inch) chunks, and set them aside in a bowl.

Drop the chilies and ginger into a food processor and blend until smooth. Add the yogurt, ground coriander, salt, black pepper, turmeric and sugar, and process again. Pour and scrape this mixture into the bowl of cooked potatoes, and carefully mix well to combine. Set the mixture aside to marinate for 10 minutes.

Heat the ghee in a large pan or wok (preferably not a non-stick pan - hard to get a crust) over moderate heat. Sprinkle in the cumin seeds. When they darken a few shades, add the curry leaves, stir briefly, then add the potato mixture. Stir the potatoes carefully through the spices, and pan-fry for 5 minutes, or until they are dry and crusty.

Sprinkle in the cinnamon, cloves and cardamom powders. Mix well, sprinkle with chopped fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
