Utah Krishnas : Julie's Blog on Diwali

The lake downstairs lit up with many lights as everyone floated Diwali diyas, the sounds of Orissi mridang beats resounded over the Rockies as Ankita danced away into the night. Dracula received his copy of the Bhagvat Geeta and promised to visit the temple every Sunday evening at 5 for Krishna bhajans while hundreds of devotees, the likes of Draupadi, Meera and Jaydev kept beat to Garba as the winds got colder at the Iskon Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah.

Japa Group : All the Best from My Heart

This is a nice story about Sacinandana Swami's experiences with chanting. There are some nice realisations which may enlighten your japa.

"Today, I chanted, prayed, sang, and deeply connected at Govinda Kunda. What an atmosphere!
Before me the kund, or pond, and towering behind—tall and majestic—Giriraja Govardhana. A cool breeze moves the leaves of the trees of desire whose arms dance in the wind as if offering arotika to Radha Govinda. This breeze cools my body and mind as well as those of my roommate—a small bat who listens intensely to my japa and singing. As the counting beads go by—indicating numbers of rounds way beyond my quota—a thought manifests: How can I connect with the Lord during my chanting?
I recall the three points of Bhaktivinoda Thakura and apply them:

1. Remember the name is Krishna.
2. Meditate about the meaning of the name while chanting.
3. Cry out to Krishna—beg for mercy while taking the name.

All of a sudden a herd of about fifteen or twenty surabhi cows walks by the kunda.
Whenever cows walk next to or on the top of Giriraja, you know that Krishna walks behind them.
Oh, if I could only see spiritually! May my blindness one day disappear by the power of the dust of Vraja! In the evening I go to a tree where a great siddha mahatma (perfected soul) chanted before me. At the time he sat there, the local residents of Govinda Kunda had to get all their groceries from traveling merchants. No ghee if the merchant did not come that day.
One day the priest of the local Radha-Gopinatha temple went to the siddha mahatmain a panic:
“Maharaja, there is no more ghee in the kitchen. How will I cook the puris for the deities? The merchant will not come for another week.”
“No problem,” answered the mahatma. “Use the water of Govinda Kunda to fry the puris.”
The pujari did so, and for an entire week the water turned into ghee to fry the puris. No problem in Vrindavan for those who wish to serve. After a week, when the merchant arrived, the pujari asked the mahatma if he should buy ghee or continue to use the water of the kunda.
The mahatma answered firmly: “Yes, buy ghee but for each time you took from the Lord’s Govinda Kunda, you must offer the same amount of ghee back into the pond. We are Krishna’s servants. He should never be allowed to become our servant!”
All these impressions come to us in millions of forms in Vrindavan, giving us the impetus to connect deeply with our Lord. Oh, even a short time in Vrindavan is therapeutic, healing, and always totally amazing!
That’s it! Sorry for my being short, I got sick when I came and I struggle these days.... All the best from my heart."

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Battle Over Coal Mining Gets a Windy Twist

This would be a sample of why the Mountain Party exists.

Mine critics: Why not use windmills instead of blowing up mountaintops

By Vicki Smith

updated 5:35 p.m. ET Oct. 24, 2008

Opponent at mine site

DOROTHY, W.Va. - Tacked to the front porch of a cabin atop Kayford Mountain is a sign. “Larry’s Place,” it reads. “Almost Heaven.”

Almost. In five minutes, Larry Gibson can walk to a crumbling overlook he calls Hell’s Gate.

It is a window onto an alien landscape of gray rubble where only machines move. It’s a small example of mountaintop removal mining, he explains. Only 900 acres.

Then he turns away from the Patriot Coal Corp. project and gazes left toward the unbroken green tentacles of the Coal River Mountain.

It is a web of jagged ridges, some rising more than 3,300 feet. At its base are communities like Colcord, a few dozen neatly kept homes along Sycamore Creek. Under its canopy are bears and blackberries, white-tailed deer and wild turkey, ginseng and sassafras.

And like so many in southern West Virginia, it is a mountain that could be blown to bits for its coal.

Massey Energy, holder of state permits to blast 6,000 acres, sees the future — and a fortune — in Coal River Mountain. With the spot-market price of steam coal at $133 a ton and likely to rise, the mountain is a resource capable of feeding power plants for 14 years. Massey plans to start work as soon as federal regulators approve.

But Gibson and others propose a future in which the mountain survives.

Mine coal the traditional way, they say. Dig tunnels and leave the top intact for 200 windmills. Generate enough electricity for 150,000 homes. Let the mountain produce energy forever.

Gibson, 62, sees Massey’s way of mining as no less than “the genocide of Appalachia,” the sacrifice of a people, a culture and the hills that bind them.

“This land right here has done as much for the people as their own mother did,” says Gibson, whose own lights and phone are powered by a solar panel while logs feed his potbellied stove.

“Coal’s something we used in primitive times…,” he says. “We can surely do better.”…

Mountaintop removal mine site
Jeff Gentner / AP file
Coal River Mountain is seen at left and behind an existing mountaintop removal mining site at Kayford Mountain, W.Va.

In mountaintop removal, forests are clear-cut. Holes are drilled to blast apart the rock, and massive machines scoop out the exposed coal.

The rock and dirt left behind, the “spoil,” is dumped one 240-ton truckload at a time into adjacent valleys, changing the shape of the earth, lowering the mountain and covering streams.

Coal River Mountain Watch, the environmental group pushing the wind farm, says more Americans want clean energy, so it’s the perfect time to consider a more sustainable use.

It’s also the perfect place: For industrial wind farms, developers seek sites with wind speeds of at least 15.7 mph, the minimum to be labeled Class 4. Coal River Mountain catches winds that range from Class 4 to Class 7, with speeds of 19.7 mph or higher.

Money talks
But the battle is uphill when nearly everyone stands to get rich from the coal…

Underground mining now minority
In the 1970s, the federal government passed laws to control damage from surface mining, and underground mining remained the dominant method of production for many years.

But after Wyoming supplanted Appalachia as the nation’s biggest supplier of coal, that began to change. In Appalachia, surface mines now outnumber underground operations.

A study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated 400,000 acres of forest were wiped out and nearly 724 miles of streams buried between 1985 and 2001 alone. North Carolina-based Appalachian Voices estimates 470 mountains have been destroyed…

At Flint’s Hardware in Sylvester, a railroad conductor who hauls coal says it’s time Manchin and everyone else realize that alternative energy must be developed: Coal is a finite resource.

“If they don’t do something with wind and water,” says Charles Cowley, “we’re all going to be with the lights out.”

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Work From Home

My Jam Kitchen has really filled out. We've added another much needed work table and more shelving.  It would be nice if my client donated some more shelves to  me since he just brought over cases upon cases of organic crushed tomato and cannelloni beans. I have a five gallon bucket of virgin coconut oil, five gallons of organic virgin olive oil, 5 gallons each of buckwheat groats--for shtetl cuisine, 5 gallons of organic moong beans, 5 gallons of organic brown basmati and bags upon bags of organic spices.  Some of which I will probably never use because, well, just because.  And then there is the case of Real Salt, which tastes like gritty dirt to me but intellectually I know it is good for you.  But still, gritty dirt.  I'm just not that into it.  Then there are the cases of roasted peppers, kalamata olives and lord knows what else I have yet to discover.  If I was smart I would charge him a storage fee.

In addition to my client's stock, I have my own stuff to deal with.  Many, many pounds of flours and sugars which I am working on getting into buckets.  Spices, which I never have enough of.  Salt. Olive, peanut and mustard oil.  Jars of ghee. Office stuff.  Labels. Jars. Lids.  Canners and big pots.  Spoons.  Refrigerators. Newspaper for shipping. And etc.  Lots of etc.

I have been working on getting organized.  Well, not exactly organized but at least put away. Now I will start working on getting organized.

If anyone has some time, please...send me some, okay? I will gladly gift you a jar of Saffron Cardamom Peach jam in exchange.

Sita-pati dasa : Back in Brisbane and Bedridden

Prahlad and I are back in Brisbane after two weeks in New Zealand. I like New Zealand, at least when I'm visiting.

Candidasa is going to post some photos of the Vyasa-puja retreat held by the NZ devotees in Taranaki. Prahlad and I had a great time there.

In the meantime, here's a couple of snaps that I took:

There's a new burger joint opening on Ponsonby Road: Murderburger [read an article]. I stopped by one morning after Bikram and snapped a shot of their sign:

I found a great drink while I was there too: Demon.

100% demonic energy in a can.

Unfortunately I can't drink it at the moment. It contains 140 mg of caffeine. I don't do caffeine normally - too much of a swing between peaks; on top of that some of the supplements that I am taking for my Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup challenge do not mix well with caffeine at all (according to the strong warnings on the labels).

Maybe I'll crack open a can to celebrate my victory in Melbourne, chant the verses from Bg. 16.13-15, and drink it from a human skull.

In the meantime, I've been confined to bed since my return to Oz. My lower back and hips have some issues at the moment. It might be due to the 20 minute upavista-konasana that I added to my morning, or else having Prahlad (who weighs 20 kg now) sit on my back while I did baddha-konasana.

Those who accept limitations might call it "injury", and use it as an excuse to wimp out. However, I reject that mental classification and instead label it "radical reconfiguration". I may be bedridden right now, but this is simply the transition to a new level.

If I can get up tomorrow I'll do a podcast on "Yoga and Injuries" to share some of my realizations on the subject.

To Inevitable Victory!

Wherever there is little chance, we take advantage. That is our process. [break] Initiation means just to see, “Here is a little chance. He is coming forward. Take it, accept him, and fan it.” This is initiation, not that “Now I am initiated, I become perfect.”

ISKCON Melbourne : Jayapataka Swami update 31-Nov-08, 6.30pm

From Ratnavali...

I have been informed that many devotees are worried as they didn't hear any reports today. We are sorry for that. The reason is, the Mumbai Management has asked the devotees' and servants to shift from the Guest rooms as all their rooms have been booked in advance for 3 to 4 months. Actually the Mumbai Management is not encouraging any one to visit without advance booking.

After the tracheotomy yesterday, Guru Maharaja is not fully conscious. He is resting.

Only once this morning he opened his eyes and after that he is resting again. At 1.30pm they have turned off the ventilator system. Guru Maharaja was able to breathe by himself until 7.30pm. They didn't want to strain Guru Maharaja and therefore they have turned on the ventilator system again.

The BP is on the higher side but the doctors say it is alright. The sugar level is normal. The platelet count is 98,000 today.

Subhag Maharaja and all the senior devotees are asking us to chant and pray more for our Guru Maharaja's recovery. Only Lord Krishna can perform miracles and without his blessings nothing can happen. As long as Guru Maharaja is in the ICCU his situation is still critical. Guru Maharaja appeared in a dream to a devotee yesterday and said, "Please keep on chanting. That gives me strength."

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Downtown Alachua Farmers Market

Tuesday, opportunity rang me up in the middle of my cook day. It was Steve (or was his name Scott?), the market manager for the newly opening Downtown Alachua Farmers Market.  Steve wanted to invite me to join the market as a vendor.  Why, thank you, Steve!

But of course, the thing that stands between me and the market is the fact that I am not totally legal. While my kitchen is clean and sanitary, it lacks a 3 basin sink, mop sink, hand sink, regulation lighting, a range hood (oops) and painted walls (high gloss, to be exact).  All this requires not only money, but time to figure it all out and get it all together.

And if and once I do get ye olde kitchen inspected and start doing the farmers market thing, how will I find the time to actually do it all?  Anyway, instead of lamenting my opportunities I should spend my time getting this kitchen inspection thing together.  The goal for at least getting started on it is December.

Remind me if I forget, okay?

Jahnavi, UK : Confessions of a Word Lover: Flouting my way to inner joy!

I felt so happy walking out of my morning lecture today. Believe me, that’s something to write about. Normally it’s two Powerpoint filled hours on a cold Friday morning I could do without (were it not a requirement to pass my degree of course). But today, something was special. For one thing, the overhead projector was broken, so the yawn inducing Powerpoint was mercifully absent, but the real reason I felt so good, boiled down to what the day’s lesson was about. We were learning about Grice’s ‘Maxims of Conversation’ (don’t worry, I won’t explain it all), part of which included a discussion on the difference between ‘flouting’ and ‘violating’ these maxims. Sounds exciting eh? It’s not really. I just made sure I put up my hand to answer every question, just so I could say flout over and over again.

Flout is one of the most fun words I’ve heard in a long time. Its really meaning has a defiant quality, but you could really use it in any way you want. ‘Yeah, it was hard until we got to the second hill, and from then on we just flouted’, ‘Don’t eat and flout at the same time’, ‘I wish I could come rock climbing, but I’ve got the flouts, sorry’, ‘I flout in your general direction!’

Another interesting fact about the word flout, is that its etymology is from the Middle English ‘to flout’, meaning to play the flute.

That’s all for now. More fascinating words later, including crenellation, vapid and impeach.

Thursday Oct 30/ 08 - Columbus, Ohio, USA

My dear friend and godbrother, Akhilananda, drove me from Cleveland, where the previous night we participated in the weekly Wednesday gathering of devotees, to the Center of the World. I kid you not. There is a small village in Ohio named Center of the World which does not necessarily give you the feel that there is lots of action nor the attraction is a place for someone who’s looking to retire. What’s so special about the place is there is a large Correctional Services Campus here – a prison. Akhilananda has been regularly seeing an inmate Aaron, a fellow who once dated his daughter from school but who is going on his fifth year in jail. Originally from Jamaica his father and Bob Marley were close associates and when he was young Aaron used to sit on Bob’s lap in jovial playfulness.

Aaron has been corresponding with me. He has been conducting himself well in this facility and is winning the respect of others. He’s been chanting on meditative beads (japa mala) and become strict with standard principles. Practically he’s living like a monk.

In a small room adjoined to an area where inmates can meet visitors Akhilananda and I conducted a small diksha or initiation ceremony and gave him the name Arjun, after the peace warrior friend of Lord Krishna. Arjun has got these incredible leadership qualities and hence this name was given. I specifically asked him if he could be an inspiration through his good behaviour to be that good example for the people he’s sharing time with. Grateful that he has achieved a new start in his life and regretful of his past criminal deeds, I believe he will excel.

My walking today happened early in the morning up and down Cleveland’s Lorain Rd. when only the baker was in action and traffic was next to nil. The evening was spent at the Columbus centre of ISKCON. Lively chanting went on here.

Krishna Dharma dasa : Gopinath

Gopinatha (Part one)

By Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur

Text One
gopinath, mama nivedana suno
visayi durjana, sada kama-rata,
kichu nahi mora guna

Gopinath, my Lord, please heed my humble plea.
Self-serving and shameless, immersed in sinfulness,
no virtue will you find within me.

Text Two
gopinath, amara bharasa tumi
tomara carane, loinu sarana,
tomara kinkora ami

Gopinath, I have no other hope than you,
I fall down at your feet, your shelter do I seek,
Your service ever to pursue.

Text Three
gopinath, kemone sodhibe more
na jani bhakati, karme jada-mati,
porechi somsara-ghore

Gopinath, I do not see how you will free me,
bereft of all bhakti, dulled by cupidity,
fallen in fearful misery.

Text Four
gopinath, sakali tomara maya
nahi mama bala, jnana sunirmala,
swadina nahe e kaya

Gopinath, all I see here is illusion.
No knowledge I possess, completely powerless,
controlled by worldly conditions.

Text Five
gopinath, niyata carane sthana
mage e pamara, kandiya kandiya,
korohe karuna dana

Gopinath, at your feet forever keep me.
Weeping incessantly, a sinner though I be,
I pray and plead for your mercy.

Text Six
gopinath, tumi to’ sakali paro
durjane tarite, tomara sakati,
ke ache papira aro

Gopinath, you can act completely freely.
All sinners can you save, your grace I therefore crave,
no other shelter do I see.

Text Seven
gopinath, tumi krpa-parabara
jivera karane, asiya prapance,
lila koile subistara

Gopinath, ocean of complete compassion.
Your pastimes you display, to free us from the sway,
of ignorance and illusion.

Text Eight
gopinath, ami ki dose dosi
asura sakala, pailo carana,
vinoda thakilo bosi’

Gopinath, what evil does exist in me?
That though the demons rose, into your own abode,
I fail to find my liberty.

Partha-sarathi das, ISKCON Iraq : Battlefield Bhajans Vo. 26

Battlefield Bhajans Vol. 26

written in Olympia, WA

Dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Halloween Krishna’s

We have a tradition in my unit to dress up every year before Halloween and go for a run around base. Since it was so cold, I decided to not dress up and stay warm. As the first sergeant told everyone with a costume to come in front of the formation and we are going to vote on who has the best costume. Their were so many people dressed up, we had basketball players, skateboarders, a cat burglar; even two soldiers dressed up as mormons compete with pamphlets. One by one all the soldiers came out and everyone cheered to vote. After everyone was judged we wondered why the 1SG had not announced a winner. She said,” so we have one more costume but it is a group.” As soon as she said that, three soldiers walk up dressed as devotees, chanting the maha mantra and with books in their hands!!!! Wow, everyone was cheering so loud, some soldiers started to follow along. When finally after six or seven minutes everyone quieted down, the first sergeant asked, ” Who are you guys supposed to be?”  One soldier stepped forwarded and announced proudly, ” We are servants of God, here to give you this simple method of purification.” The second soldier stepped forward and stated that they were SFC Sonnenberg and his friends. I was blown away because all these boys were atheists, and they did a lot of research on Krsna Consciousness. One explained to me that they wanted to dress up in far out costumes that no one would think of. They remember me walking around Iraq in a dhoti and thought thats it. But as they researched more and more and got more and more into character they felt at home in devotional cloth. They took some books from me today and are thinking of visiting the temple sometime.

Squadron Commander

I am almost finished with this commitment, I am just waiting for department of the Army to sign and send back. I was at a ceremony for our outgoing command sergeant major (csm) and the squadron commander came up to me and asked about my status. As I explained he told me that he is actually sad to see me leaving. He started laughing and we were sharing stories back and forth of my time under his command. One comment he made was that he would never thought in twenty-three years of service one of his go to sergeants would be a Hare Krsna and that he has a new respect for them. I thanked him for signing my paperwork and recommending approval. He said,” I didn’t want to, but I though who am I to decide this kids future. He has given this organization so much over the years and here is my chance to do a good deed, to help you move closer to your spiritual goals. Weighing all the facts, I though I was being very self centered and selfish, and right away signed.” He had to leave but before he left, I told him I woulD never forget what he did for me, and if he ever needs anything, please let me know. He smirked and said, ” Put in a good word with Krsna for me.”

Sadhana:

Japa: I am still trying to strengthen my chanting, to feel the mantra in my heart. Our mind is so confused, just when we think we are in control of it during chanting, there it goes again. I am chanting and trying to call out to Krsna and beg Him to engage me in the service of Him. (25 daily)
Reading: Since it is Kartika, I decided to start over with spiritual life, and by that I mean re read the Bhagavad-Gita, and do so in a more absorbed mood. I feel that even though I read the BG a few times, I have missed many key points. Also I reading some Srila Prabhupada nectar everyday. Now we are reading Siksmrta Vol. 2. I love these letters, they bring so much clarity to our lives. But when reading I have to remind myself that Prabhupada gave instructions to individuals according to their time place and circumstance.
Memorization of Verses: I was focusing more on this and then stopped, but thanks to HG Dravida Prabhu association, I am focused again on it. I pick a verse Sunday evening, memorize during the week, then offer to Their Lordships Sunday morning.  I pick verses that inspire me, and I can use in daily preaching.
Sankritan: BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!!!!! Get out there and distribute these books. So many people never heard of Krsna, then why don’t we go out more? It is time to give this nectar to the public and beg them with all sincerity to take spiritual life seriously. Our tradition is a preaching tradition. Take one hour out of your week and help humanity, we all make so many excuses about why we cannot go out and distribute books, but who are we actually cheating?

My scores to date:
maha big: 10
big hard: 16
big soft: 10
small: 193

We beg of all the devotees to pray for us, that we can fully dedicate our life to Lord Caitanya. That we can fully surrender to our Spiritual Master. That we can have the determination to push forward and preach this glorious message.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Petha to the People

Brajajana sent me the following recipe in response to a pic I posted elsewhere of an uber loki. It's for the Indian sweet by the name of petha. I can't say that I endorse all the ingredients in the recipe (I am so not into alum powder), or that I like petha. In fact, I really don't like petha. Brajajana may be the only person I know who actually has willingly had more than one piece.

Nevertheless, I thought it would be interesting to post the recipe.

If you have had any experience with petha, positive or negative, please feel free to post it in the comments section.

PETHA

Ingredients:

• 1 kg White Pumpkin (firm)
• 2 tsp Calcium Hydroxide (kitchen lime)
• ½ tsp Alum Powder (Fitkari)
• 3 drops Screwpine Essence (Kewra)
• 800 gm Sugar
• 1 tsp Rose Water
• 2 cups Water

How to make Petha:

• Dissolve alum powder in water (½ cup) and keep it aside.
• Dissolve kitchen lime in 1 litre water, strain with a clean cloth twice if required, and keep it aside.
• Wash, peel and deseed the pumpkin. Cut it into 25 mm. (1") squares and prick each piece with a fork all over.
• Soak the pieces in lime water for 30 minutes.
• Drain the lime water and wash the pieces thoroughly under clean running water for 2-3 minutes.
• Put the pumpkin pieces in a bowl. Pour alum water on the pieces and shake the bowl so that all the pieces get evenly coated.
• Drain the alum water. Take sufficient amount of water in a heavy bottomed pan and boil the pumpkin pieces till they become soft and transparent.
• In the meantime, make syrup of sugar and water of 2 thread consistency.
• Put drained pumpkin pieces in the sugar syrup and boil till syrup becomes thick again.
• Turn off the flame and take out the pieces.
• Keep covered the syrup with a mesh, overnight.
• Again boil the syrup and add the pieces.
• Cook it for 3-4 minutes and turn off the flame. Let the pieces cool.
• Now sprinkle Kewra and rose water over the pieces. Allow petha to cool completely. Refrigerate it.
• Petha is ready to serve.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA : Yoda Gita

Do or do not... there is no try

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering

For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship

Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealously. The shadow of greed, that is

A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless

Luke: I can’t believe it.
Yoda: that is why you fail

Remember, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they.

May the Force be with you

Ohhh. Great warrior.Wars not make one great.

Foreplay, cuddling - a Jedi craves not these things

Who's your Jedi master? WHO'S your Jedi Master?

Yoda is teaching us freedom from anger, pride, greed, lust, and fear (fear of death). Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna teaches Arjuna "Being purified by his intelligence and controlling the mind with determination, giving up the objects of sense gratification, being freed from attachment and hatred, one who lives in a secluded place, who eats little, who controls his body, mind and power of speech, who is always in trance and who is detached, free from false ego, false strength, false pride, lust, anger, and acceptance of material things, free from false proprietorship, and peaceful — such a person is certainly elevated to the position of self-realization" (BG 51-53)

Not only this, but Krishna goes on to say "Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear" (BG 66).

Our force is Lord Krishna and our Jedi master is Srila Prabhupada who is teaching us this eternal science

So tell me…what are the chances that a Hare Krishna can make a good Jedi?

Hare Krishna
