Japa Group : With The Right Consciousness

Hare Krsna everyone. I hope you are having a nice week of chanting and that the Lord is blessing you in many ways. My holidays at work have just finished so I came back to work, what I do myself is try to engage in reading devotional sites, talking to devotees and try to fill this necessity of being connected in some way to Krsna consciousness.
This week I received a very significant email from my Gurudeva talking about the importance of chanting with the right consciousness. I am going to share it here with you just because I wish to let you know how the spiritual master and Srila Prabhupada's words are effective when we are in doubt about something.
I asked in a email if we can chant Japa for specific purposes, like getting something even if it's something related to spiritual life, and the following is the reply.

Giriraj Swami: Chanting extra rounds is fine, but the consciousness in the chanting also matters. In principle, we should not chant for material purposes. Srila Prabhupada explains:

dharma-vrata-tyaga-hutadi-sarva-
subha-kriya-samyam api pramadah

"It is offensive to consider the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra to be a religious ritualistic ceremony. Performing religious ceremonies, following vows, and practicing renunciation and sacrifice are all materialistic auspicious activities. The chanting of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra must not be compared to such materialistic religiosity." (Cc Adi 8.24 purport)

The chanting itself is a prayer for us to be engaged in pure devotional service. In principle, we should chant only to deepen our relationship with the holy name--our eternal relationship with Krsna. We can also pray for facility to improve or increase our service, but always in the mood of surrender to whatever Krsna deems best for us:

tvan-mayayaddha jana isa khandito
yad anyad asasta rtatmano 'budhah
yatha cared bala-hitam pita svayam
tatha tvam evarhasi nah samihitum

"My Lord, due to Your illusory energy, all living beings in this material world have forgotten their real constitutional position, and out of ignorance they are always desirous of material happiness in the form of society, friendship, and love. Therefore, please do not ask me to take some material benefits from You, but as a father, not waiting for the son's demand, does everything for the benefit of the son, please bestow upon me whatever You think best for me."
(SB 4.20.31)

I think I have a lot to learn from this email, because it's difficult for me to see everything related to the Lord, at least when they happen, it takes some time for me to understand and also not desire something Krsna hasn't given me yet. Everything that happens in our lives has a purpose and we need to see it as the Lord 's arrangement to our advancement. My wish is to have this thinking and always depend on the Lord even when I can't understand His will to my life.

Hoping we all have a nice week of chanting, attentive and focused on attaining service at the lotus feet of Radha and Krsna.

Hare Krsna.

your servant,

Krishna Dharma dasa : Bus ride to nowhere

Travelers battling through the Westminster traffic this month are likely to encounter a bleak message emblazoned on buses. “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy life,” is the dubious legend plastered to a number of the vehicles meandering around the nation’s capital. I’m not sure how its authors think we should respond to this call. Should we breathe a sigh of relief and immediately rush off to engage in all sorts of licentious behaviour so long denied us by God? That sounds worrying to me, I have to say. Such so-called enjoyment is inevitably indulged in at considerable cost to the world, to others and ultimately to our own selves. Intoxication, illicit sex, stealing, gambling, killing and other such sins generally vetoed by religion are not pursuits we should lightly unleash on the world at large.

What do the proponents of this message mean by ‘God’ anyway? As we know the term is variously interpreted, but if we assume they mean a supreme controller and judge of our acts, then just how probable is his non-existence? It is not very probable that there is no power moving us in ways we cannot prevent. Even scientists, and it was a prominent one who funded the bus campaign, spend their time trying to find and understand the laws of the universe. Laws. Those things that cannot be changed or contravened, which uphold our existence and which obviously must have an upholder. Laws mean a lawmaker, and no matter how proud we may become of our learning and progress, we can never claim to have made any universal laws.

As for a judge, well we have to ask why, despite our best efforts to avoid it, we suffer? All our work aims at one end, to enjoy life and be happy. In accordance with our best understanding of cause and effect we work in ways calculated to produce desirable results, but we often reap a rather a different harvest. So why is that? Honest thought should conclude that we are doing something wrong; that we have not yet properly understood the universal laws and are therefore transgressing them, to our cost.

That does not mean there must be a stern God sitting somewhere in judgment, waiting for us to sin so he can rain down pestilence and death upon us. I can quite understand people wanting to get away from that kind of fierce deity. But as in any state or country, there are laws and consequences that will ensue if we break them. We need those laws. The Vedas say that in the absence of law and order, enforced by good government, then the ‘law of the fish’ will soon prevail. The bigger fish will swallow the smaller one. Honest citizens are therefore happy to see the rule of law in place. It is only criminals who revel in a lawless state.

The message on the bus could well have said, “There is no government. Now go out and party.” But honesty must again intervene to point out that if there is no government the party will soon be over. Governments don’t only enforce law and punish offenders; they also administer and manage the state, keeping things going smoothly (we hope), so we have food, shelter, money and everything else we require if we are to live happily.

Surely then there must be a universal government maintaining the cosmos and providing our necessities. The sun draws water from the ocean, which then goes up to the sky, over the land and rains down on our fields; and we eat. A wonderful system, and one over which we have no control, along with all such perfect universal arrangements. To date no scientist has been able to manufacture even one seed, never mind a sun.

Who is the fool who will suggest that there is no intelligence behind all these intricate universal systems; and that they go on by chance? Day after day they continue working. If chance brought them into being, and if chance is truly supreme and there is no controller, then we should expect no predictability. Everything should run wild with random occurrences popping up everywhere without rhyme or reason. But as we all know that is probably not going to happen. Again, the very point of science is to fathom out the rhymes and reasons behind nature, so we can predict the outcome of our endeavors with some certainty.

But how well are we doing that? Which brings me back to my point above. There is a higher power, let’s call it God, determining the consequences of our work. We are obliged to accept those results and no slogan on any bus can change that. Our best hope is to accept the very high probability of God’s existence, try to properly understand his desires, and then carry them out to the best of our ability. Only then will we truly stop worrying and enjoy life.

Madhava Ghosh dasa : Masdar City — First Zero Carbon City?

Well, maybe in this day and age.  Before the industrial revolution all cities were zero carbon.

I would be a lot more excited about the flagship ISKCON projects if they were more in this vein PLUS Krishna (maybe the planners could take some hints):

Masdar City is the most ambitious sustainable development in the world today - it will be the world’s first zero carbon, zero waste, car-free city powered entirely by renewable energy sources. It is part of the Masdar Initiative; a long-term strategic endeavour by Abu Dhabi to accelerate the development and deployment of clean future energy solutions. By taking sustainable development and living to a new level, Masdar City will lead the world in understanding how all future cities should be built.

The City is a free zone cleantech cluster, which is already attracting the world’s best in all areas of sustainability, from renewable energy to biomass. All types of companies including innovators, incubators, research and development, pioneers and solution providers will be part of the journey to create, work and live in Masdar City.

Masdar City is more than a concept - it is happening. Phase One of Masdar City has now begun - The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is underway and Masdar City will be home to 100 students and faculty by fall 2009. Masdar is embarking on a global drive to attract industry partners in energy and utilities fields to achieve this important objective.

Your expertise in energy and utilities will contribute to the development of a blueprint for the cities of the future.

Here's an agenda we should all have an interest in..
Efforts to promote the consumption of locally produced foods are gaining ground in counties throughout North Carolina.

A community in Stokes County hopes to expand the dialogue by focusing on those topics at a sustainability festival on the grounds of a Hare Krishna temple in Sandy Ridge. The free festival on Saturday, Jan. 17, will feature speakers, local food and music. Who should attend?

"Anyone with a mouth and a stomach," said organizer Mitra Das . "Each and everyone of us depends on food everyday."

H.H. Mahavishnu Swami : Vyasa Puja date

Dear Guru Priya dd,

Please accept my blessings! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Thank you for your letter.

> Guru maharaj,  please would you kindly let me know what is the exact date
> of your Vyasa puja and also what date is your birthday,  I really want to
> do something nice
> for you even though you will be in Africa than India.

I was an Acocks Green (Bham,UK) sandwich (tomato or date or stool?) born
between Isvara Puri’s Diss and Shivaratri. It was a Trayodasi. According to
the Mayapur vaishnava calender that means Sunday February 22nd.But it could
be different in Europe so please check.I think the Festival Tour will just
be finishing then maybe in Mombasa. There will be a few disciples there so it
should be serious fun.

> I can’t thank you
> enough for all you have done for me,  but I know that distributing Srila
> Prabhupada’s books will please you so
> I decided to go on books every saturday and offer the results to you,  I
> am useless but what  gives me strength to approch the public and give them
> a book is your  instructions.

I think your guerrila’s loyalty and determination are saving me and
countless others because who can count the  lucky victims when these book
bombs are detonated  by Krishna as Paramatma and the transcendental Mercy of
Lord Gauranga mushroom clouds and the radiation  fallout spreads all
round? Here is a nice relevant quote from Sri Namamrta in the latest “fools
and rascals” Obama era:-

The protection of the earthly planet is dependent on proper rainfall, and as
stated in Bhagavad-gétä and other scriptures, sacrifices are performed to
please those demigods who are in charge of rainfall.

annäd bhavanti bhütäni
parjanyäd anna-sambhavaù
yajïäd bhavati parjanyo
yajïaù karma-samudbhavaù

“All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains.
Rains are produced by performance of yajïa [sacrifice], and yajïa is born of
prescribed duties.” (Bg. 3.14)

Thus the proper execution of yajïa, sacrifice, is required. As indicated
herein, King Påthu alone would induce all the citizens to engage in such
sacrificial activities so that there would not be scarcity or distress. In
Kali-yuga, however, in the so-called secular state, the executive branch of
government is in the charge of so-called kings and presidents who are all
fools and rascals, ignorant of the intricacies of nature’s causes and
ignorant of the principles of sacrifice. Such rascals simply make various
plans, which always fail, and the people subsequently suffer disturbances.
To counteract this situation, the çästras advise:

harer näma harer näma
harer nämaiva kevalam
kalau nästy eva nästy eva
nästy eva gatir anyathä [Adi 17.21]

Thus in order to counteract this unfortunate situation in government, the
general populace is advised to chant the mahä-mantra: Hare Kåñëa, Hare
Kåñëa, Kåñëa Kåñëa, Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare.

H.H. Mahavishnu Swami : Old Story

hg_krishnaNow it is the end of the marathon, and you must be exhausted. Please note
that My realizations (being that I am a pujari-cook by nature) of book
distribution is: you can only enthusiastically distribute the book that you
personally love. Unless that book has changed your life personally, You will
not be able to continue to change other peoples lives with that book for
very long time. some devotees distribute for a few years, but because they
only sell and don’t read, they cannot continue it.

Srila Prabhupada in 1976 told us members of Radha Damodara TSKP in Mayapur
during His darshana the same:

“so You are distributing the books but do you read them also?” Prabhupada
asked us upon entering his room.

“Oh yes srila Prabhupada!” our sannyasi leader Tamal Krsna Maharaja
(confidentally white lied!_he knew we’ld not dare speak out and challenge
our sannyasi leader verbally.

yet we gave him such an incredulous look, all of us 80 boys..
it was obvious, Tamala Krsna Maharaja who was well intentionally trying to
hide the fact, was not truthfully forthcoming on it.

when 80–90 boys all young say 18-20 years old. all Heard that, it was like
we all crained our necks and looked at Tamal Krsna maharaja with shocking
surprise,, like silently speaking “You said what???”

Srila Prabhupada was smart, clever, he could clearly understand that Tamal
Krsna Maharaja was hiding the real truth, (due to intense competition from
Jayatirtha in London and elsewhere).

Srila Prabhupada was Indignant with Anger…

“So you are distributing the books, and suppose you come up to me and you
give me a book. and I ask you, “You are selling me this book but do you know
what is written inside this book,” what will you reply to him.

He wanted a reply directly from us, we got scared and kept our mouth shut.

“what will you say!!!” he demanded. Ohhh we got really scared and we didn’t
reply.

Srila Prabhupada’s heart got soft. he didn’t want to intimidate or scare his
surrendered disciples, just wanted to instruct us… “nooooooooo (like the
father he is) “You must readddddd!!!

then we all hung our heads downwards. reading was like sense gratification
for us, we read only when there was no one to sell books to, or when wew
slinkered down in between two cars to hide, if the police were looking to
catch us in shopping centres.

reading? only van leaders amongst us were reading! we were selling books 9
am to p pm who’s got time to read?

yet those very van leaders were the most steadfast ones’ who never left
Iskcon, not like the ones who don’t read the books.

yours in the service of Krsna BalarAma,

Subuddhi Krishna dasa, Chicago, USA : Pearls of Wisdom - 106

Bhumidevi to King Prithu:

My dear Lord, by Your own potencies You are the original cause of the material elements, as well as the performing instruments. (the senses), the workers of the senses. (the controlling devatas), the intelligence and the ego, as well as everything else. By Your energy You manifest this entire cosmic creation, maintain it and dissolve it. Through Your energy alone everything is sometimes manifest and sometimes not manifest. You are therefore the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the cause of all causes. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

Namahatta.org : ISKCON’s Future: Could a Bi-cameral GBC Help?

by Deva Gaura Hari Dasa on 10 Jan 2009

Following the example of the United States, federally based systems around the world have adopted a bicameral legislature, where the two chambers have differing methods of representing the constituents. These are generally along the lines of the U.S. system of having an upper house with equal representation for States, and a lower house with representation of geographical areas based purely on population. Examples of this can be seen in the political systems of Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico and many other countries.

Bicameralism has also been used to fuse together an aristocratic and democratic system. The best known example of this is the British system, where historically the House of Lords was made up of hereditary positions representing the Nobles, while seats in the House of Commons were elected positions, representing the common people. ...

Underlying all of these uses is the practical fact that having a bicameral system allows for a second chance to modify important legislation, and allows for a different perspective on the legislation.

So how is all of this relevant to ISKCON and how, if at all, could ISKCON take advantage of the political apparatus of a bicameral system?

ISKCON News.com : Hearty Krishna Cuisine in Jersey City

By Robert Sietsema for The Village Voice on 6 Jan 2009

The latest addition to Jersey City's vegetarian cavalcade is Krishna Cuisine. It occupies a rather grand space a few steps up from the colorful hubbub of Newark Avenue, where greengrocers hawk vegetables unfamiliar to Westerners, vendors roll unguent spice combinations into betel leaves, and shops display the gold jewelry that constitutes an Indian bride's dowry.

ISKCON News.com : The Swastika: A Symbol of Goodness or Hate?

By Madhava Smullen on 10 Jan 2009

When Hitler began using the swastika as the symbol for his Nazi party in the 1920s, he brought about the death not only of thousands of innocent people, but also of an innocent symbol. His use of the beloved Hindu religious sign instilled so much hate for it in the Western world that I wonder if its true meaning will ever be reclaimed.

Partha-sarathi das, ISKCON Iraq : Battlefield Bhajans Vol. 33

Battlefield Bhajans Vol. 33

Dedicated to Srila Prabhupada and my Guru Maharaja.

Mental Health Assessment

It was time for my post deployment mental health assessment. I really don’t like going to this appointment.  It involves me and a doctor sitting down and talking about what happened in Iraq. I walked in and the doctor greeted me. He asked me to sit down. I placed my backpack down and grabbed a seat. He asked so how ya doing, I said good, how are you? The doctor relied good thanks. I said yes, but can you be better? He replied yes, I guess I can be. At this point I decided to turn the tables on hi. He started telling me all about what going on in his life. I asked him if he has an interest in spiritual life. He said no. I explained to him, the reason why your unhappy is because of your lack in God.  As the session went on we discuss more and more about spiritual life. I reached into my bag and brought out a Bhagavad-Gita and asked him if he ever saw this book. He said no, but the cover was very interesting. I went on to explain about Arjuna being a soldier and the situation he was in. The doctor was looking on with a very intense look. He help the book and scanned through the pages as I explained the philosophy. Finally our time was up. He looked up and asked if he could have the book, I said yes no problem. I explained that most people gave a donation. He thanked me for the nice talk and gave a nice donation.
I got a call that evening, seems I have to go back to the doctor because of the “stunt” I pulled today.  I walked into the office and was greeted by a serious looking man. He said I’m your doctor, and you won’t pull what you did yesterday on me. Ok, I will take this serious. I sat down in his office and he went over my post deployment health survey. He looked surprised, and I asked what is wrong. He said, I don’t understand, usually when I have to evaluate someone that has seen so many horrific situations as you; they are a mess. But you’re smiling, happy, focused. How are you dealing with all this? Again I started to explain I was a Hare Krsna, and by reading these ancient vedic texts and by chanting the Maha Mantra, I am able to deal with all the death I have seen. For the next twenty minutes I explained the science of Bhakti Yoga.  I pulled a Bhagavad Gita and a Chant and be Happy book from my bag and gave them to him.  I gave him my email and said I would do a reevaluation of him in a week, to see what he learned and walked out. I looked in his window form the outside and there he was deeply absorbed in reading Srila Prabhupada’s books.

Finance Brief

I had to go to a mandatory finance brief. The women walked in and commanded everyone being chaptered to move to the front. She was a very heavy person and I of course follow her instructions. She said no sergeant, only chapter cases sit there. I said Ma’am I am also being chapter. She looked puzzled.  The brief was long and boring I was reading verses from the Cc on my ipod. She called us up one at a time. When I got to the desk, I looked and saw I was the very last one. She closed the door and said you’re a Sergeant First Class, what are you in this room with all these privates for? I read your file, are you the Hare Krsna they are talking about? I said, Yes Ma’am. She asked what is your deal, why would you give up that rank to be a monk. I don’t understand, my husband is trying to get promoted and here you are, young, a fast tracker and you’re walking away. I explained to her that we all have a calling. While the military gave me many skills, this life is meant for God Consciousness.  These books, are not ordinary books, they change peoples lives, they are the literary incarnation of God, and they will give you a new understanding in life. She listened and asked many nice questions. She asked about Srila Prabhupada and expressed that she heard form others about this soldier that is becoming a monk and the books he gives to people are really powerful. She had been curious about these books. I asked her if she would want a book and she smile and said oh why you have one? I took out a Perfection of Yoga and a Bhakti book and handed them to her. She was smiling ear to ear and thanked me for the books. As I was walking to my next appointment I was thinking how kind Srila Prabhupada is. We have no ability to give out his mercy, but he is merciful that these books distribute themselves, after all Krsna is all attractive. How can we resist Him?

labdhvä su-durlabham idaà bahu-sambhavänte

After many, many births and deaths one achieves the rare human form of life, which, although temporary, affords one the opportunity to attain the highest perfection. Thus a sober human being should quickly endeavor for the ultimate perfection of life as long as his body, which is always subject to death, has not fallen down and died. After all, sense gratification is available even in the most abominable species of life, whereas Kåñëa consciousness is possible only for a human being. (The Avadhuta brahmana to King Yadu; SB.11.9.29)

Sadhana:

Japa: It is a nice feeling to chant your rounds before Mangala Arati. Rest of the day we can chant because we want to, not because we need to fill our quota. I am praying that my japa will improve and I will be able to really take shelter in the Holy Name.
Seva: Their Lordships are the center of my activities. I am reading to Them daily a chapter of BG. It is very nice to sit in front of Them and read for Their pleasure. I am looking forward to performing seva for Them in India. It should be so intense, and I pray purifying.
Reading: Still reading SB, now on the 3rd Canto and Si Vraja-rati-cintomani. I am trying to memorize some slokas from this book to recite when I arrive in Vrindavan. I am trying to develop my relationship with the Holy Dham.
Sankritana: I have not been able to go out as much due to out-processing the Army. I miss it, a few days without going out and I am ready to climb the walls.  Here are the scores:
Maha Big: 4
small:20

Only seventeen more days till we are relieved from this service. The excitement is building and also a little bit of fear. It is scary in a sense to just give everything up and surrender to Krsna. With the help of many senior devotees, I am understanding that Krsna will always maintain his devotees that are trying to sincerely spread His glories. With that said I beg for everyone’s blessings to become a little sincere, and understand the word servant. My life is getting ready to change, new service, full involvement in the sankritana mission, traveling, military preaching. I really wish to do some  service for my Guru, for his Guru, for Srila Prabhupada and for ISKCON.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada,
Partha-sarathi Dasa

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : To Small Appliance Hell. And Back.

On the last day of my children's Montessori pre-school in PA, I headed over to Sears to cash in on some of my Sears credit card Reward Points. Don't get all in a dither. We use our credit card but pay the balance off monthly. This way, we can add up the Reward Points but not the interest. I had six $50 Sears gift cards and knew exactly what I wanted to get--the 14 cup Kenmore Elite food processor.

Little did I know my children were *graduating* from their pre-school. Since we were moving to Florida, the director, Ms. Lynn, decided to include them in the moving up ceremony. So maybe it is my karma for missing the part of the program where they were given their diplomas, but my morning tryst at Sears was plagued from the get go.

First off, the Rewards Gift Cards weren't working. They didn't read on the scanner. This took up a lot of my time. And then....well, there's got to be an "and then" since I started this paragraph with "First off."  Okay, so I didn't actually unpack and use the food processor until three months later when we were already settled into our Florida digs. And that is when I realized how shoddy the Kenmore Elite 14 cup was.

The plastic felt especially cheap. Soon after putting it to use, the thingy that engages the lid with the bowl broke off (sure I dropped it a few times, but come on, if it were a Kitchen-Aid the plastic would have been top of the line). I was able to deal with it by using a bamboo kebob skewer to hit the sweet spot and get the motor running.

Until about two months later the motor just stopped running. It burnt out on me while making a cheesecake. This was terrible. The 14 cup was super necessary in my life. When I got married I was gifted a 7 cup Cuisinart, which--despite the fowl smell coming from the motor the other day when I was food processing some peanut butter and dates--is still running after eight years of hard labor. The only drawback with that one is the size: it's big enough to chop ginger but not big enough for a double batch of cookies. Or a large cheescake. But hey, at least it *works*!!

After my Cuisinart burnout scare I got to thinking about the 14 cup. About the cost. About it's less than poor performance. About what a piece of crappy crap it was.

And then I decided to do something about it. Determined to get the problem fixed, one way or another, I began looking for the receipt. Which quickly led me to conclude that that Sabjimata really needs to bone up on her organizational skills. I then began a series of pointless phone calls to Sears Customer Service, Kenmore's Warranty Department, the local Sears Service Center and wherever else my call was routed as no one knew what to do with me or my 14 cups of broken food processor.

I knew it and they knew it. Items like these are throw-aways. No one can fix them and no one has any interest in doing so.

I had a choice. I could give up and surrender my 14 cup to the trash collector or I could pack up my broken food processor in a "Restaurant Style Tortillas" box and head over to Sears, hoping they will accept the return.  I chose the Tortillas.

With no proper box and no proper receipt, I was playing the longshot. But with two kids at my feet and a Sears computer record of all the big ticket appliances I've purchased from them over the years, I felt like I at least seemed a little credible.

Nice Sears Managers. I love you both.

The 14 cup inside the Restaurant Style Tortillas box.

Ms. Spice Grinder and Mr. Waffle Maker

To make this long story a little bit shorter, they took it back! I lost $40 bucks on the transaction because they credited me the current price but whatever. That's one hundred and eighty something bucks back in my wallet. On a plastic gift card, of course.

With the credit I bought a new spice grinder and Venumadhava really wanted a waffle iron so, despite the non-stick cancer surface, we bought one.

I envy my daughter's fashion sense. I want to cook in a prom dress, too!

Looks better than it smells....

And I will be returning that to the store this weekend. I so hate it.

I don't buy non-stick stuff so I am not used to the horrible V.O.C.'s which are emitting upon the first few uses. But I am really sensitive to smell and just felt like I was breathing in tumors while we were using it.

And despite the non-stick surface, the waffles stuck. We did a little better when we coated everything in ghee, but come on. What is the point of non-stick if it, um, sticks.

Lastly, the thing (Cuisinart brand) just feels like total crap. I just hate crap. Hate it. The only thing I have that is crap that I can tolerate is my salad spinner. And even that annoys me at times.

My son was a little sad that the waffle maker is getting the ax but was comforted by the fact that we'll still have pancakes.

Despite chanting ancient Vedic hymns, our waffles still stuck.

The consolation prize.

Kurma dasa : Eno's What He's Talking About

eno:

Yesterday's blog (below) stimulated a flurry of mail, all on the same subject:

Michele (from New York ?) asked: "What is Eno powder?"

Kurma replied: "In a nutshell, ENO is a "fruit salt". For those of you who do not know what a fruit salt is, it is a mix of Sodium Bicarbonate (46.4%), Citric Acid (43.6%), Sodium Carbonate (10%). GlaxoSmithKline makes this product.

Its effervescence-causing components (especially in the presence of the acidic yogurt) allows the batter of the dhokla to aerate. These air bubbles are fixed in the steaming process (in a similar way that the aeration from yeast works in baked bread) thus creating the lovely spongy texture of the Dhokla.

Eno is not as sensitive to food formations as straight Sodium Bicarbonate plus it does not have that aftertaste that Sodium Bicarbonate has. It is difficult to find in the US outside of Indian grocery stores. Available in UK and Australia in chemists and supermarkets."

Michele rejoined: "Thanks Kurma - I'll head over to E 28th St, where we have lots of Indian groceries, and see if I can find it."

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : Daily Dhokla

Here's my dhokla recipe:

2 c sooji (semolina/farina/cream of wheat/whatever)
1 c yogurt (plus a little extra)
ginger (as you like)
chili (as you like)
1/8 tspn turmeric
2 tspn eno (or baking soda and omit turmeric)
1 to 2 tspn salt
1 to 2 teespoonss ghee or oil
2 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine in food processor, transfer to baking pan. Set in a pot to steam (do not set directly on bottom of pot...use a small inverted bowl or measuring cup). Steam 20-30 minutes or until toothpick, when inserted in the middle, comes out clean. Remove from steamer and let it cool.

For the chaunce:

Heat 3 tablespoons ghee. Add 1 tablespoon mustard seed. When mustard seed popping, add 1 tablespoon sesame seed. Off the heat. Add a pinch of hing and some dried coconut. Spread on top of dhokla. Chop up some fresh coriander leaf and add as a garnish.

To see my hack demo:

(by the way...i say i will one day have "assistance"...as in my husband will help. not "assistants.")
