Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA : Yes, They Could. So They Did.

Op-Ed Columnist

By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

Published: February 14, 2009

New Delhi

So I am attending the Energy and Resources Institute climate conference in
New Delhi, and during the afternoon session two young American women — along
with one of their mothers — proposition me.

“Hey, Mr. Friedman,” they say, “would you like to take a little spin around
New Delhi in our car?”

Oh, I say, I’ve heard that line before. Ah, they say, but you haven’t seen
this car before. It’s a plug-in electric car that is also powered by rooftop
solar panels — and the two young women, recent Yale grads, had just driven
it all over India in a “climate caravan” to highlight the solutions to
global warming being developed by Indian companies, communities, campuses
and innovators, as well as to inspire others to take action.

They ask me if I want to drive, but I have visions of being stopped by the
cops and ending up in a New Delhi jail. Not to worry, they tell me. Indian
cops have been stopping them all across India. First, they ask to see
driver’s licenses, then they inquire about how the green car’s solar roof
manages to provide 10 percent of its mileage — and then they try to buy the
car.

We head off down Panchsheel Marg, one of New Delhi’s main streets. The
ladies want to show me something. The U.S. Embassy and the Chinese Embassy
are both located on Panchsheel, directly across from each other. They asked
me to check out the rooftops of each embassy. What do I notice? Let’s see
… The U.S. Embassy’s roof is loaded with antennae and listening gear. The
Chinese Embassy’s roof is loaded with … new Chinese-made solar hot-water
heaters.

You couldn’t make this up.

But trying to do something about it was just one of many reasons my hosts,
Caroline Howe, 23, a mechanical engineer on leave from the Yale School of
Forestry and Environmental Studies, and Alexis Ringwald, a Fulbright scholar
in India and now a solar entrepreneur, joined with Kartikeya Singh, who was
starting the Indian Youth Climate Network, or IYCN, to connect young climate
leaders in India, a country coming under increasing global pressure to
manage its carbon footprint.

“India is full of climate innovators, so spread out across this huge country
that many people don’t get to see that these solutions are working right
now,” said Howe. “We wanted to find a way to bring people together around
existing solutions to inspire more action and more innovation. There’s no
time left to just talk about the problem.”

Howe and Ringwald thought the best way to do that might be a climate
solutions road tour, using modified electric cars from India’s Reva Electric
Car Company, whose C.E.O. Ringwald knew. They persuaded him to donate three of his cars and to retrofit them with longer-life batteries that could
travel 90 miles on a single six-hour charge — and to lay on a solar roof
that would extend them farther.

Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 5, they drove the cars on a 2,100-mile trip from
Chennai to New Delhi, stopping in 15 cities and dozens of villages, training
Indian students to start their own climate action programs and filming 20
videos of India’s top home-grown energy innovations. They also brought along a solar-powered band, plus a luggage truck that ran on plant oil extracted from jatropha and pongamia, plants locally grown on wasteland. A Bollywood dance group joined at different stops and a Czech who learned about their trip on YouTube hopped on with his truck that ran on vegetable-oil waste.

Deepa Gupta, 21, a co-founder of IYCN, told The Hindustan Times that the
trip opened her eyes to just how many indigenous energy solutions were
budding in India — “like organic farming in Andhra Pradesh, or using neem
and garlic as pesticides, or the kind of recycling in slums, such as
Dharavi. We saw things already in place, like the Gadhia solar plant in
Valsad, Gujarat, where steam is used for cooking and you can feed almost
50,000 people in one go.” (See:  http://www.indiaclimatesolutions.com/ )

At Rajpipla, in Gujarat, when they stopped at a local prince’s palace to
recharge their cars, they discovered that his business was cultivating worms
and selling them as eco-friendly alternatives to chemical fertilizers.

I met Howe and Ringwald after a tiring day, but I have to admit that as soon
as they started telling me their story it really made me smile. After a year
of watching adults engage in devastating recklessness in the financial
markets and depressing fecklessness in the global climate talks, it’s
refreshing to know that the world keeps minting idealistic young people who
are not waiting for governments to act, but are starting their own projects
and driving innovation.

“Why did this tour happen?” asked Ringwald. “Why this mad, insane plan to
travel across India in a caravan of solar electric cars and jatropha trucks
with solar music, art, dance and a potent message for climate solutions?
Well … the world needs crazy ideas to change things, because the
conventional way of thinking is not working anymore.”

Bharatavarsa.net : Book distribution seminar: The Mayapur Festival and a phone call mistake

Hari bol Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Today begins the Maypur Festival. Thousands of devotees are here by the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada, to take advantage of all the mercy flowing in the Holy Dhama.

Yesterday Jayapataka Maharaja gave the Srimad Bhagavatam class. Everyone was impressed, it was shastric, amusing, and interesting. Last night he also spoke at the Mayapur book distribution awards night inspiring the book distributors, but there he used a translator because it's not that easy to understand him due to his condiction. But at the Srimad Bhagavatam class he was inspired to just speak, and 95% of it was understandable. Everyone was satisfied to see this great general of Lord Caitanya's army still on the front lines. It's hard to keep a good devotee down.

Now here's a sankirtan story for you:

In the beginning of December there was so much important managerial things to do, I was a chairman of our Brahmana council and SKT leader of our small Sofia Bulgaria yatra - and I just began to think what kind of example will I be for others with my few books distributed. On top of that there was WED (world enlightenment day). I thought at least I can invite devotees to participate in that enlivening day, distribute some books myself, and then everyone can have a big feast in the evening.

One particular telephone call was for bhaktin Galya but to my surprise, somehow when I called I found that the Galya I called was another Galya from Varna city -500 km from Sofia! Even though it was the wrong Galya I invited her to WED. Then she said very enthusiastically, "We are 5 families that wants all of Prabhupadas books!" She ordered five full sets of Srimad Bhagavatam, Gitas, Krsna books and a few others. All togerher they purchased 95 maha big books!!! I took a train for 8 ours, delivered the books and returned to Sofia amazed by unlimited mercy of Krishna on me and all others. It was not telephone mistake, there are no mistakes, it was Krsna's arrangement.

Sita-pati dasa, AU : "Yeah, what he said..."

The potentially confusing statement that "evolution is both a theory and a fact" is often seen in biological literature. This statement arises because "evolution" is used in two ways. First, the "fact of evolution" refers to the observed changes in populations of organisms over time, which are known to have occurred. Second, the "theory of evolution" refers to the modern evolutionary synthesis, which is the current scientific explanation of how these changes occur.

On its own, the word "evolution" often refers to the combination of the underlying facts, and the theory that explains them. However, it is also frequently used to refer to one or the other. Readers should take care to determine an author's meaning.

Japa Group : Always Chanting To Satisfy Krsna

Hare Krsna everyone. Here is a letter I received today about how attached was Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi to the Holy Names of Krsna. I hope you enjoy this reading and feel more enthused to constantly chant the holy names. His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has described Siva's attachment to hearing Krsna's name in chapter forty-three of The Nectar of
Devotion:
"When the great sage Narada was chanting the glories of the Lord, the bluish line on the neck of Lord Siva disappeared. Upon seeing this, Gauri, the wife of Lord Siva, suspected Lord Siva of being someone else disguised as her husband, and out of fear she immediately left his company."

Krsna Tells Siva to Marry

Siva is not only attracted to hearing Krsna's name, but he is also very attached to chanting it. This fact is illustrated in many different Vedic literatures. The Brahma-vivarta Purana (1.6.4-16) recounts a discussion between Lord Krsna and Lord Siva:

Krsna once summoned Siva, who is famous as the best of the yogis, and told him, "You should accept the goddess who rides a lion as your wife."

Hearing Krsna's words, Siva smiled and meekly replied, "I am unable to accept the goddess of nature, because she will distract my mind from Your devotion and obstruct the path of serving You. She can overshadow true knowledge. She is passionate and can increase one's lusty desires. She can destroy one's austerity. She is the storehouse of illusion. She is the strong base of terrible worldly bondage, and attachment to her leads to evil ways, destroys noble ideas, and diverts one from the noble path.

"O my Lord! I do not wish for a wife. Please give me my desired benediction. My desire to render devotional service to You is always increasing. I am never satiated by chanting Your names and serving Your lotus feet.

tvan-nama panca-vaktrena gunam mangalalayam

"O my Lord, may I constantly sing Your most auspicious names and qualities with my five mouths, as I wander about in dream or in wakefulness. [12]

akalpa-koti-kotim ca tvad-rupa-dhyana-tat-param

"Material enjoyment, yoga, and austerities do not appeal to my mind, for I wish to eagerly meditate on Your enchanting form for millions of kalpas. [13]

tvat-sevane pujane ca vandane nama-kirtane
sadollasitam esam ca viratau viratim labhet

"My happiness is uninterrupted while serving You, worshiping You, offering prayers to You, and chanting Your names. But when these activities are finished, my happiness is also finished. [14]

smaranam kirtanam nama-gunayoh sravanam japah
tvac-caru-rupa-dhyanam tvat-padam-evabhivandanam

samarpanam catmanas ca nityam naivedya-bhojanam

"O Lord! O giver of benediction! Please bestow on me the nine forms of devotional service so that I may constantly remember Your pastimes, chant and hear Your glories and qualities, meditate on Your attractive form, offer obeisances at Your lotus feet, surrender fully to You, and eat the remnants of Your foodstuffs." [15-16]

Parvati's Vow of Chanting

In the sixth canto, chapter 254, of the Padma Purana, Bhagavan Vyasa recounts how Parvati once appealed to the great sage Vamadeva to initiate her into the worship of Lord Visnu. Thus requested by the goddess, Vamadeva gave her the Visnu-sahasra-nama-stotra. Parvati then began to daily worship Visnu in the morning by chanting the Visnu-sahasra-nama. A few days later, Parvati offered her obeisances to the sage and returned to her abode. There, on a charming peak of Mount Kailasa, Sankara Mahadeva was seated after having worshiped Lord Visnu on the Dvadasi day. Seeing that his wife had returned, he told her, "O goddess worshiped by all the three worlds, come and eat with me."

Parvati replied, "O my lord, you may go ahead. I shall take my meal only after I have completed my chanting of the thousand names of Visnu."

Smiling, Lord Siva said, "O Parvati, you are fortunate and blessed. You are Visnu's devotee. O goddess, without good fortune it is very difficult to obtain devotion to Visnu.

rama rameti rameti rame rame manorame
sahasra-namabhis tulyam rama-nama varanane

"I am reciting, 'Rama,' 'Rama,' 'Rama.' I delight in the name of Rama, which attracts my mind. O woman with a lovely face, Rama's name is equal to the thousand names of Visnu. [20]

ra-karadini namani srnvato mama parvati
manah prasannatam yati rama-namabhisankaya
ramety uktva mahadevi bhunksva-sardham mayadhuna

"'O Parvati, whenever I hear a name that begins with the syllable ra, my mind becomes pleased, expecting it be the name of Rama. O goddess, chant the name of Rama and come and eat with me.' Parvati uttered the holy name of Lord Rama and then took her meal with Sankara." [21]

May our lives be fully devoted to serve Krsna always being engaged in chanting and hearing about the Lord. Another important point here is that we should always finish our vowed rounds satifying first our spiritual master and then Krsna.

your servant,

Subuddhi Krishna dasa, Chicago, USA : Pearls of wisdom - 127

When a person considers sense gratification the aim of life, he certainly becomes mad after materialistic living and engages in all kinds of sinful activity. He does not know that due to his past misdeeds he has already received a body which, although temporary, is the cause of his misery. Actually the living entity should not have taken on a material body, but he has been awarded the material body for sense gratification. Therefore it is not befitting an intelligent man to involve himself again in the activities of sense gratification by which he perpetually gets material bodies one after another.

H.H. Mukunda Goswami : Meditation

Because Hanumanji is portrayed on the banner of Arjuna, it is understood that Arjuna meditated on him during the battle, even though Lord Krishna Himself is his chariot driver and tactical advisor in the battle of Kuruksetra. This underscores the importance of sadhu in the three-way check and balances system known as 'guru, sastra and sadhu. Lord Krishna in this case is the guru and
Hanuman or Vajrangaji represents the sadhus.

ISKCON Melbourne, AU : Kripa Sindhu and Family Farewelled

Original story from Guna Mani Nitai Dasi.
Original photographs from Bhaktin Bernadette.

Kripa Sindhu Dasa - staunchly supported by his wife Ayodhya Rani Devi Dasi - has served as a keystone to our attempt to share Krishna consciousness with Melbourne's Indian student community. However, as his own daughter Rasika nears school age, he is unable to refuse the oppotunity to return to Ayodhya Rani's hometown of Madras. While Rasika can become educated in a devotional atmosphere, a good job awaits Kripa Sindhu.

Kripa.jpg Last Sunday, ISKCON’s Melbourne community farewelled these three special devotees with a maha-breakfast feast. Musicians chanted kirtana. Sri Gaura Prabhu worked behind the scenes as Charu Caitanya Dasa served as our master of ceremonies. Friends and well-wishers packed the prasadam hall beyond capacity. Charu invited us all to offer our obeisances to each other, accentuating the phrase ‘krpa-sindhubhya eva ca.’ He reminded us how Kripa Sindhu has indeed proved to be an ocean of mercy in his service to ISKCON Melbourne.

Yadu Srestha reminisced how Kripa Sindhu and Nityananda Priya were so eager to attend the morning program they would take a taxi from South Yarra to attend mangalarati. He remembered how - as new devotees - both always asked serious, sincere questions about Krishna consciousness. Yadu Srestha pointed out Krpa Sindhu’s first class example. Coming to Krishna consciousness as a student fresh from India, he fervently preaches to his countrymen to join the same auspicious path.

P1000332.jpg Charu Caitanya noted that - on Kripa Sindhu’s departure - we will all have to step up to the standard of care and compassion he has set in sharing devotional life with the student community.

Prabhu Dasa spoke on behalf of Aniruddha Prabhu and Acintya Mataji, who are currently serving in Mayapur. He praised Kripa Sindhu’s outstanding contribution to the temple since 1999, and blessed Krpa Sindhu’s move to Madras.

Surya Gopal Dasa was next to the microphone, recalling how Kripa Sindhu was always accompanied by two other mahajanas: Nityananda Priya Dasa and Radha Krishna Dasa. Surya Gopal underlined Kripa Sindhu’s humility and enthusiasm for devotional service, and his other skills which range from ‘computer to cooking’!

P1080718.jpg Sarva Mangala Dasi, Jnana Samudra Dasa, Tota Gopinath Dasa, Ananda Ballabha Dasa, Mahatma Dasa, Sudershan Caitanya Dasa, Muralidhara Dasa, Jagannatha Rama Dasa, Yogeshwara Govinda Dasa and Gopa Vrindesh Dasa all spoke, glorifying Kripa Sindhu Prabhu’s service.

Lila Mayi Devi Dasi - Kripa Sindhu’s sister - movingly described how her brother brought his whole family to Krishna consciousness.

Kripa Sindhu Dasa was last to speak: endlessly glorifying each of Melbourne’s devotees whom he credited with making remarkable contributions to his spiritual life, and then begging forgiveness for offences.

We join Lila Mayi in her sorrow at separation from this strong Vaisnava family, and in her hope for their speedy return.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA : We So CRAZY!

A house full of seven kids and seven adults can be quite a scene, so Kiriti and I decided to get out of the house for a little...that's right...food shopping!

Right next to Ward's, our sorta local family owned grocery store, is Bikes & More, the bike shop where Kiriti's Florida husband works. I met Brian a couple of weeks ago when I went bike shopping for my family and was blown away by the sheer twin-ness of him to Radharadhya, pizza maker extraordinaire and Pennsylvania husband to Kiriti. Before shopping I had to drag her over to the bike shop.

It was early morning and Brian was just opening shop, chaining bikes up outside the store's entryway. When Kiriti saw him from a distance, she immediately said, "That's not my husband!"

But wait....

As she got closer to him I watched her crumple up, doubling over in laughter. The beard. The blue eyes. The bear belly. It was too much for both of us. And then...

He spoke.

Slowly. With awkwardly punctuated breathes. Quietly. Like every word was part of a delicate secret and every secret was full of inscrutable truth. Even if he was just talking about a bike rack. Or a pizza peel. Which "he" am I talking about? Does it really matter?

Brian & Kiriti

Radharadhya & Kiriti

Again, Brian & Kiriti

Okay. Must. Stop. Laughing. So I can continue with this post. Really, don't you think this is hysterical?

Alright....onward....

Tuesday, Feb. 15, marked our 7th wedding anniversary (although if we were following the lunar calendar it was really back in January). My husband and I actually had two weddings (to each other) and this anniversary celebrates the religious ceremony, which was six months after the legal ceremony, which wasn't very ceremonious, to be truthful. We just signed our names on the paper and dropped it off at the courthouse. Maybe we even mailed it in. Who can remember such things?

Tuesday the friends were on their own, visiting Disneyworld and relatives nearby so we spent our anniversary in relative peace. I wanted to make cupcakes to bring to our temple that morning, but I was busy with friends so cupcakes were made for Wednesday.

Off to the temple....7 years and 46 cupcakes later.

I really liked how the cupcakes turned out. Feeling a little disorganized from so much fun, the cake was a little different batch to batch. Some were organic white spelt/organic whole spelt, some organic whole wheat pastry/organic all purpose flour and some were a little of everything. Lots of good quality vanilla flavoring in the batter gave these cupcakes a taste worth their frosting. And speaking of frosting, I was pretty pleased with the results.

The purpley frosting was butter and cream cheese combined with confectioner's sugar and Sabjimata Blueberry Conserve, giving it a very natural yet fun color and taste. The pink cupcake frosting was made from cream cheese, organic coconut milk, confectioner's sugar and Sabjimata Strawberry Conserve. Yellow frosting was cream cheese, confectioner's sugar and homemade orange syrup. Yum yum.

Yes, the nonpareils are ummm....not organic. Or natural. Or good for you. But they are totally small.

I have no idea how the cupcakes were received because I had to head home to get ready for our day trip to St. Augustine....which I will write about tomorrow.

Nite, nite!

ISKCON Melbourne, AU : Food For Life Serves Prasadam To Bushfire Victims

From Bhakta Dasa

Last week the devotees of Melbourne Temple helped a community tragically affected by the Black Saturday bushfires that burnt Victoria. Hare Krishna Food For Life distributed prasadam meals to those in need in the Kinglake region.

land.jpg This area was severely devastated by horrific bushfires that left many people dead and injured. People were left without accommodation or belongings as so many houses were destroyed as well as businesses, farms and livestock.

At the time of the horrific events the temple devotees as well as our congregation were eager to help these victims one way or another. Obviously the best way for us to help was to distribute Lord Krishna’s mercy in the form of prasadam.

After a meeting, it was decided that we put a plan into action and get things under way. We solicited some of our suppliers to either give produce as a donation or to supply what we needed at cost price. Their generosity was truly amazing and very gratefully received - we were soon ready to help out.

DSCN1873Sm.jpg Unfortunately it was not as easy as we thought to get through to the different relief agencies that were all extremely busy organizing such a huge rescue and relief effort. They also had not previously worked with nor knew about our Food For Life program and our ability to help in such an emergency situation by providing nutritious meals to those in need.

It was only after actually going to the Whittlesea ‘refugee’ camp and speaking to the Crisis Kitchen Director that we were able to start our prasadam distribution campaign in earnest.

We were asked to supply the meals by working alongside the Australian Army, who by this stage was providing thousands of meals to the survivors of the bush fires as well as to the rescue workers who were working around the clock.

In particular, they were looking forward to us coming and assisting them because there are a high percentage of vegetarians in the Kinglake region. They really appreciated us helping them by supplying delicious and nutritious vegetarian meals.

Early on Thursday morning the devotees got to work and produced a feast of delicious rice, subji, pappadams, halavah with custard, and lassi to take up to the heart of the devastation.

After a long and agonizing drive through the fire ravaged landscape and seeing with our own eyes the extent of the damage to land and property, we arrived at the meal distribution centre – a virtual military war-zone base. The commanding officer welcomed us enthusiastically, and we set up and started our service alongside a group of inquisitive army personnel.

DSCN1867sm.jpg For about three hours we were run off our feet serving up to 300 people who were very appreciative of us being there. We received many positive comments: “ No way, the Haris are here and they have halavah and lassi! I’m in heaven.” And, “Oh, I am so glad you guys are here! Some pure vegetarian meals, finally.”

At the conclusion of mealtime, the Staff Sergeant and Corporal directing the proceedings asked us if they could distribute the prasadam that was left over for evening dinner and breakfast the following morning. Who would have ever thought that the Australian Armed Forces would join Lord Chaitanya’s sankirtan army and give out the mercy so eagerly?

DSCN1865sm.jpg Driving home, Suvarna Manjari Dasi, Bhakta Sridhara and I reflected on the incredible events that we witnessed. It was amazing that in such a time of destruction, sadness and pain how the community got together to support each other and how we had the opportunity to be part of that rebuilding. Even though our effort could be seen as minimal, the potency of prasadam distribution is spiritually amazing.

The army is now readying to withdraw their services and life in these communities will slowly get back to some sort of normality as we pray for their well-being.

Now that Hare Krishna Food for Life at Melbourne Temple has learnt lessons from this experience, in the event of any future unexpected natural disaster we hope to be more ready to lend assistance with a much quicker response. We are still seeking donations for the services rendered as the Temple needed to fund some of the infrastructure that is now ready to be utilized for future crisis response.

I would like to thank all of the devotees who volunteered their services. Thanks also to all of those individuals and companies who donated money, supplies and other products to this Hare Krishna Food For Life cause.

Through the foot healing process I have been employing many methods (all doctor approved, of course). The latest has been sporting this air cast around the right leg. This leg device as it stands on its own looks like lofty foot gear from a Star Wars feature. Our community at the Sunday festival saw the latest in monk's fashion as I entered the temple's main hall. A few eyebrows were raised. The final prescription for the day to address the ongoing foot inflammation was to have someone gather clean snow, submerge the foot in it, dry off the foot, and repeat. So I did (I don't know how Francis of Assissi walked those snow trails in total oblivion).

On the more sober note our sizeable gathering of four hundred people heard the glories of one of the topmost ascetics of all times, Shiva, as it was his birth anniversary. Indradyumna Swami spoke extolling his glories, Near the tail end of the program I offered dedication to the recent innocent people who died in the cross-fire of Singalese and Tamil warfare in Sri Lanka. Civil war has persisted there for years. Now the struggle has intensified.

There are at least 250,000 Tamil people living in the Toronto area, most of them from Sri Lanka. A percentage of them have shown great interest in Krishna devotionalism in recent years. For them we grieve as well as for the lost and killed victims of Sri Lanka, whether Tamil or Singalese. These identities relate to the temporary body. If we can grasp the wisdom about our own essence, that we are spirits, then we would look to moving into the direction of compromise and negotiations, and dissolve another senseless war.

The comomunity co-operatively chanted the maha-mantra in the name of peace - all in unison. It was very powerful.

Indradyumna Swami and I sat in front of a group of local youths from the community in what we call the yellow room. As the guest of honour he spoke.

“My parents were both graduates of Stanford University. They were brilliant.” He went on to say that he didn’t follow their same studious past and so they asked him while he was in his youth, “What are you going to do with yourself?” He wasn’t able to give a clear answer and then he met some Krishna monks who had a tremendous impact. He discovered chanting and that was it. Life turned around.

In the room of the glowing youth many of the listeners held in their right hand a pouch or what’s called a bead bag which holds the individual’s meditational beads. Indradyumna, who is a very revered monk known for his organizing of grandiose spiritual festivals, noted that most of the listeners were daily chanters. Then he put a good word in for commitment and shooting for the golden figure of sixteen.

“Sixteen” refers to sixteen revolutions of 108 beads chanted. Each strand of beads numbers 108 of those beads. It was the expressed desire of our guru, Srila Prabhupada, to chant this prescribed amount of mantras daily. So the number “16” is etched in stone and Indradyumna was encouraging all present to shoot for that target which is a strong commitment of two hours daily.

After the fine session of emphasizing chanting I showed Indradyumna a new publication I picked up on my last trip to the States. The newspaper with one of those “zine” formats is called “Sixteen Rounds” and can be found on the internet at www.16Rounds.com. Articles of content are topical and attractive and are geared towards the well-being of all living entities, promoting spiritualiy and exposing the faults of materialism. The youth will love it. It’s a gem of a publication.

That’s 16 ROUNDS!

Sex Shock

My dear friends, Indradyumna Swami and companion Sri Prahalad, arrived today. We lunched together and chatted over a grainless (ekadasi) vegetarian meal. Swami and I are both monastic men while Sri Prahalad is married. One topic that did hold our minds in some suspension was the subject of the world’s out-of-control sex and in particular teenage pregnancies. Becoming more common is the casualness of very young people, who are not adults, taking to irresponsible intercourse.

I don’t believe you have to be religious to be shocked at hearing that a young UK boy at 13 is a dad and the 15 year old mother of the newborn could not confirm. She admitted that there were other possibilities as to who did the fathering. Now who is to blame for such a social ill? Perhaps we require a real hard look at what lurks around in our lives – a lot of irresponsible folks who offer no education by precept or by example. I believe that the sex revolution of the ‘60s did not turn out to be a healthy proposition and that in fact it has come to haunt us decades later. Astronomically the age in which we live is the age of Kali, a time of self-indulgence. In the case of the 13 year old dad, it is not just the sheer crassness of behaviour, but the lack of will on the part of all of us to correct what is becoming more and more rampant. Principles are not the number one priority. Ignoring foul play is an easy cop-out.

I have made a personal commitment to speak to people in my area of influence about principles that lead to freedom and that happiness is not so cheap. I can’t stop thinking about children bearing children and being unprepared for the tough world.

1 Km walked.

While I’m going through the healing process in mostly a horizontal position, hooked to intravenous, I had to become somewhat creative and innovative in the use of my space right next to me. Beside my bed, within arms reach, lying on the floor is my office space of approximately two square feet including phone, books and writing material. Next to that is my kitchen of fruit in a bag and juice in a bottle in a virtually smaller space. To the right of that is my entertainment centre of CD player and iPod. Neighboured by that is my pharmaceutical centre with crutches leaning over the antibiotic containers. It’s all there at my fingertips – all except for toilet and shower.

I’m honoured to be in my recovery in the same room where our guru slept 33 years ago. That’s truly sacred space, cause for recovery.

In crowded China, with its powerful workforce, some folks find it hard to have their own private space. A man who works a hard week is reported to come home to a metal cage where he sleeps and for that he must pay rent each month. How valuable that space must be for him!

As some of you know in addition to walking, theatre is another passion I have. When entering a building or room, I analyze the use of the space with sometimes an overly critical mind see the area as too crammed or too cavernous. I’m a fanatic about things being placed with a little “smartness”, like trying to see that a stage with actors are making a balanced use of space. When something is asymmetrical, my mind is agitated.

Recently in some of the tropical temples I visited, I saw the main entrance door reveal the back of a huge chair (vyasasana) and to its right, was a beautiful stambha, or pillar. Graced on top of it was perched an image of Garuda, Vishnu’s bird carrier. I expressed my agitation to the temple leader about how I perceived a wrong use of placement of things. The main entrance wasn’t inviting. The leader paid heed to a suggestion that the devotional bird be placed in a way that it’s the first impression to see, and a welcoming one.

To my amazement, Garuda, who with folding pranam hands, now stands in a centered position looking as if greeting one and all. I think it made a huge difference in the use of space. Personally, I am aching to get out of my small confined space in bed and see the world again - the big, big world of space.

Gauranga Kishore das,USA : "Never in the Kingdom of Man"

Here's another little collage which is just about meat, there is a lot of antiwar sentiment but not much willingness to acknowledge that our lifestyle is responsible for the war.

Here's an article from the Audubon Society which is good in that it acknowledges but the connect between consumption of meat and fossil fuel consumption but very few are willing to make the direct connection to the wars in the middle east which are obviously eliminating the threat posed by Al Queada and Sadam and their weapons of mass destruction.

2,500 years ago Pythagaros said "As long as men kill animals they will kill each other" but now that is being proven true in a very literal way.

The only hope is Krishna consciousness, without real God consciousness the "lofty ideals" of secular humanism, communism, socialism, environmentalism or any other ism "will never be fulfilled in the land of man."

Krishna is the real object of our love, although we may try we cannot place our love in animals, in humans, in the environment, or anything of this world. Such false idols will never inspire us to make the radical change of consciousness to total selflessness that is necessary for real change in the world.

Preaching God consciousness is truly the greatest welfare work, it is the best thing we can do for ourselves and for all living entities.

Kripamoya dasa, UK : More News - and a Review

We made the national news today as our new calf - whom we’ve named Gangotri - was born. We are all very happy to see her into the world and pray that she will never have to struggle like her namesake. The Guardian supplement did a nice piece with a colour picture.

Yesterday the devotees here at the Manor were also featured on a new television programme going out every Sunday on Sky TV channel 793. Every week there’s new pieces, some old film, and a fresh Bhagavad-gita class for the public to watch. Apparently its going down very well, and increasing numbers of viewers are tuning in.

Yesterday also I caught up with the last episode of Around the World in 80 Faiths, a well intentioned, yet very personal look at eighty beliefs on all continents. I say ‘very personal’  because the presenter, and presumably the director/producer deliberately chose many faiths for their good television value. People tend not to watch television if you present religions they already know something about, so you have to show the unusual, the exotic, the colourful, the desperately moving, or the downright quirky.

Thus Reverend Peter Owen-Jones does not give us a top-of-the-pops of religion by statistical popularity. We don’t get to learn of the most famous and orthodox but more of the lesser known sub-sects. We also get to learn about the shamans, animists, and spirit-worshippers who might not otherwise get into the average clergyman’s list of faiths.

But the reverend is also fascinated by religious syncretism, the mixing of one faith with another, as some countries look back into their history and combine modern religious expressions with those of their ancestors. Or we see religions that have become mixed with darker forces, or sub-branches that have developed some imaginative new teaching based on a modern revelation.

His style seems to have developed the more he travelled the world. The more he saw of faith, the more he felt humbled. So I can’t help thinking that  this last episode, which featured Europe, was actually shot first, when he was still developing his style.

Faith number 77, the ‘Hare Krishna’ of Moscow, are presented as part of the new influx of spirituality coming into a nation that tried to ban religion entirely. But his treatment of the Vaishnavas, although friendly, is quite superficial. Had he wanted to, he could have pursued the story of Hare Krishna in Russia and uncovered a moving tale of struggle against government forces amid great personal sacrifice and considerable loss of life. Perhaps it was the singing and dancing in the snow that made him present otherwise. People do misunderstand the joy of the Vaishnavas to be either vulgar exhibitionism or a severe lack of sobriety. Actually, its the opposite of both.

At one point he explains to viewers that ‘Hare Krishna was brought west by hippies’ which, if he wasn’t such a nice chap, would be a quite unforgiveable factual error. Still, the film of the harinam sankirtan was attractive and there will always be another time - and another film-maker.

In closing on my film and television theme, I suppose I should mention that both Dev Patel and Anil Kapoor, stars of the 8 Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, have both visited the temple here at Bhaktivedanta Manor and joined in the kirtans. Thank you and Goodnight. Hare Krishna.

Matsyavatara das (ACBSP), Italy : BHAKTI-VEDANTIC PSYCHOLOGY AS A SOLUTION TO EXISTENTIAL PROBLEMS: EMOTIONS AND THOUGHTS IN THE EVOLUTION OF OUR CHARACTER AND DESTINY

EMOTIONS AND THOUGHTS IN THE EVOLUTION OF OUR CHARACTER AND DESTINY

by Matsya Avatara Dasa.

Problems without solution do not exist. The in-depth psychological knowledge of the Vedic tradition, in harmony in modern psychological researches, identifies conscious and active willpower  as the turning point for the solution to existential problems: one ought to desire to find solutions and methodically pursue them with determination, instead of plunging deep in pain, thinking it incurable. A remissive attitude sets the person for failure. The first steps out are undoubtedly strenuous, as coming out of a moor or quicksand, but later, walking in the direction of light, the joy of living rises again from within, bearing all its vital power. Attitude is the focal point: the way you approach life, life responds to you, as it happens in relationships with fellow humans. We are the directors of our mental scenery: if we find one scenery is wrong and unfitting we can take it out, replace it with the proper one, and our mood will change. If we avoid complaints and save our energies, once we hit the profound conviction of how we want to act, we will have energies at our disposal to invest and multiply. You can multiply your resources by investing them in evolution, or you can destroy them in wasteful lamentations: it is all up you. In the evolution of consciousness, thought is a tool and emotions the means; we can use emotions for a quality jump in perception, instead of living them as knots which tie to conditioned existence. Therapy can start the moment we counter hot-natured emotions with cool-natured thoughts which have the power to clarify any turbid content. It is certainly difficult for thought to counter emotions on its own, as the latter's psychic charge is significantly higher. A series of positive emotions well instilled in our memory is our ready to hand emergency kit: when we wish to evoke them, they are immediately in our reach. Positive emotions are themselves a strong emotional charge, generally a luminous, expansive, penetrating one which can refine the healing operation only partially accomplished by thought.

It could be teachings we have received, beautiful life moments when we've experienced spiritual happiness: these memories will be extraordinarily precious if we can evoke them at the right moment, the moment of a trauma or serious crisis, even when death is approaching. If you try and change the scenery and evoke some moments of happiness from the memory archive, moments of intense spiritual growth together with people engaged in positive thinking and acting, you'll see your mood suddenly change and the course of thinking take a more vibrant and luminous direction.
Careful storage of positive moments is then all the more important: moments of joy, moments when we deeply understand others and  they understand us, and most of all moments of truth which open our vision. If we are accountable for our thinking, then who forces us to  store anguishing emotions or sad thoughts? There is no obligation, we ought only to learn to substitute them with other positive emotions and thoughts. As Patanjali (Sadhana Pada, sutra 34) suggests to meditate on the opposite thought, when negative thoughts haunt the mind.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA : Inside China’s Fight Against Internet Addiction

Two young Internet addicts watch TV at the Beijing Military Region Central Hospital in 2005 (Greg Baker / AP)

Even though it was only a week before the Spring Festival — the most important family holiday on the Chinese calendar — Wang Hongxia was forcing her son out of the house. She took her 12-year-old from their home in the northwestern city of Xian to a secluded Beijing military compound more than 700 miles away. Like many other parents across China today, Wang felt as though she had no choice. “Things have absolutely gone out of control,” said Wang, 45, almost in tears. “My son just beat and bit me again this morning after I wouldn’t let him touch the computer.”

With the world’s largest netizen population of 300 million, China is struggling with a new plight: Internet obsession among its youth. Since the 2004 establishment of the country’s first Internet Addiction Center, the military-run boot camp in Beijing where Wang took her son, more than 3,000 adolescent and young-adult patients have been treated for Internet addiction. Hundreds of similar treatment centers have mushroomed in recent years in China, joining other centers operating elsewhere in Asia and the U.S. The U.S.-based Center for Internet Addiction Recovery classifies the disorder as compulsive behavior in which “the Internet becomes the organizing principle of addicts’ lives.”

Though the fledgling disorder has been widely identified, defining it in China has not been easy. Tao Ran, director of the Beijing treatment center and a colonel in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), helped come up with a strict definition of Internet addiction last fall: consecutive usage of the Web for 6 hr. a day for three straight months is addiction. The new standard, which is still pending official endorsement by the Ministry of Health, has aroused widespread skepticism in Chinese cyberspace, with many arguing that too many people could be wrongly categorized as Internet addicts under this definition.

The murky guidelines have not stopped anxious parents like Wang from dragging their children to Tao’s camp, a grim, four-story building in Beijing’s major military compound. Once checked in, most patients are required to stay for three months, without access to the outside world, cell phones or, of course, computers. But unlike in other similar camps, parents of patients at the Internet Addiction Center have to stay at the camp to receive “treatment” too — because, according to Tao, Internet addiction is often a result of parenting mistakes. For most families, providing this treatment to a child is already a sacrifice. The total cost for a family usually amounts to nearly $3,000 — almost as much as an average Chinese couple earns in three months.

Life in the treatment camp, not surprisingly, is defined by strict, semimilitary disciplines. Patients get up at 6:30 a.m. and go to bed at 9:30 p.m. Their daily schedule includes military drills, therapy sessions, reading and sports. “At first, I felt like [I was] living in hell,” says 22-year-old Yang Xudong, a camp resident for two months. “But over time, it gets more comfortable and peaceful.” Despite the small steps he’s made, like eating a diet that consists of something other than instant noodles, the Beijing native admitted he still got upset too easily and was “afraid of people” — two signature symptoms of Internet addiction, according to Tao. “I think life in this camp has definitely calmed me down to some degree,” says Yang. “But I’m far from ready to get out, since I don’t know what to do with my life yet.”

That lack of motivation is widely shared by the young adults at the camp, even among patients with decorated academic backgrounds. Didi, a 20-year-old college sophomore who did not disclose his full name, picked up online gaming almost as soon as he got into the prestigious Tsinghua University. He says he became so obsessed that he skipped all his classes for an entire semester and eventually received academic warnings from the school. As many as 30 students from Beida and Tsinghua — China’s most storied universities — have been to the camp, says Tao, and it’s becoming an increasing trend among students from other top schools. “Our kids are all very special and intelligent,” says the PLA colonel. “It’s only normal for people to make detours when they’re young. Our mission is to help them get back on track before it’s too late.”

On the same afternoon that Wang Hongxia and her son arrived at the boot camp, an 18-year-old boy was ready to leave after months of strenuous training. As part of the camp’s tradition, he hugged every one of his fellow patients. “It’s certainly an emotional moment for the kids, as they have bound together over the months,” says Tao. “And to me, it’s especially rewarding to see them step out of here with all the confidence that they deserve.”

Japa Group : Making Efforts to Improve

Hare Krsna everyone. This weekend we had nice sessions in the Japa Room and many topics were discussed. One that comes to my mind was how to decrease our propensity to commit offenses against devotees - we sometimes tend to criticise....happens with everyone. With me, we may tend to find fault and this is detrimental to our Japa as well as spiritual life. What we were advised to do was to concentrate on the good side of the devotee and see only good qualities and also analyse him as a soul...not on the bodily plataform....like part and parcel of Krsna so we may not commit offense and chant without impediments.
Today here in Brazil is a holiday and also for the next 4 days it's the Carnival. The boys who usually chant with me are away at their grandparents house, so I was meditating on what I could do to improve my chanting or even my life. I got a little sick - the flu....so my health seems weak, a good thing to do is to come back to my exercises so I can maintain the body strong and healthy to serve the Lord.
So while going for a walk in the park I was looking at all the people that we normally see in these places....how they can make many efforts to get their body results - some runnning in this hot weather and others playing soccer, volleyball, skating, bicycling etc.
I thought to myself we are able to do anything to get what we want. Some people want the perfect body and they work hard for it....others to get all their material desires fulfilled....some others want the best relationship with family or among friends - for others like you and me....besides that we want some spiritual realisation and fixed consciousness in the Lord.
We can achieve anything we want if we really desire it with our hearts. In the past I used to look at some advanced devotees and think I would never be like them, like seeing how their sadhana is and how they are dedicated to reading, studying the sastras, being in association of good devotees and also giving emphasis to japa - for me it seemed so far.
Now I realised that we can do everything related to spiritual life if we dedicate to follow the basic guidelines for chanting and also the principles given by Srila Prabhupada. My spiritual master said the only price to pure devotional service is real eagerness to have it. By having strong desires we can overcome obstacles and reach our goal. In the beginning it may be a little bit difficult because our mind is not used to following instructions....or being attentive to only one thing . If we continuously chant and hear, after some time it will get better....just like in an exercise, after some time you can increase the number of series because your body is used to it. Same as chanting, there will be a time our desire to chant will increase and we will easily chant our vowed rounds and wish to make more.

That sounds perfect! I hope you tried to apply some good guidelines for your japa during this week so you will be able to feel the purifying effects of chanting with attention. Always think that you have Nama Prabhu assisting you in this path....you have devotees association to support you, your spiritual master and Krsna to help you to get there. Every effort will be surely reciprocated!

May the Lord always bless us with strength and the right mood for chanting.

your servant,

Aruna dd

Jaya Kesava Das, USA : Greater Love Each Man Should

A monastic life is one of intense study, reflection and proper dispensation after due digestion of what has been learned. On a daily basis we have lectures, open to all, discussing verses from the Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita which can last from ten minutes to five hours, depending on the speaker or audience. Today was a good discussion, lasting for two hours unfolding with eye opening questions and answers, sobering moments, and heated pure straight talk.
The Verse and Purport was Srimad Bhagavatam 1.1.10: "O learned one, in this iron age of Kali men have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed."

One of the questions asked by one of my students was why the process of self realization seem so foreign and difficult. The answer was simple but deep as we went through the verse and purport: because no one told us about it.
Self Realization involves an active decision to refrain the senses from their sense objects and engage oneself in higher duties for his, as well as the spiritual benefit of humanity at large. To become a competent teacher means becoming a good student- controlling the senses, learning culture, humility, tolerance, and many other virtues which develop over a course of time. But the fact is no one told any of us, especially westerners that this sort of deeper life is available to anyone and everyone. Not necessarily for all to become ascetics, but for all to have access to the reasoning behind a person's decision to leave secular society and dedicate himself to rigid principles.
These principles can be practiced by all, regardless of occupational work. For example, no one ever recommends celibacy with good educated reasoning behind it, or abstinence from intoxication, meat eating and gambling given with practical explanations. Growing up was such an interesting feat for me; I always knew that I wanted to pursue monastic life, but as grade 6 came along, a big ugly face stared at me. It was the face of peer pressure: you just couldn't remain a virgin past 6 grade. And the reasoning- semen will spill out of every part of your body at any time and so now was the time to learn about sex life in order to prevent embarrassment when you a). coughed, b). sneezed, or c) cried. If you had too much semen after 6th grade, your body could let it out at anytime and any place thus exposing you to everyone as a virgin.
What a hellish experience it was for many young kids going into their teens; and then came 18, 19 or 21, if not earlier, when you then have to drink yourself silly in order to really be considered a normal person. Luckily I escaped that phase by the mercy of the devotees who accepted me into the monastery.

There I learned that Celibacy was good for you! The semen, or fountain of youth would be well preserved to give one stronger brain cells, sharper intuition and finer tissues in the body, especially with proper diet and hygiene. One monk told me once that God gave men two heads, with only enough blood to be used by one at any given time. So someone who was addicted to sex life only willingly spilled out his vital life while someone who preserved, or used his blood for his brains, actually experienced deeper pleasures from higher levels of consciousness. Abstinence also made makes one more potent when he does decide to father offspring who may not be so susceptible to disease due to weak immune systems.
And on went the conversation this morning...
We talked about the futility of gambling, whether in Vegas or at 7 Eleven, and how people are led like donkeys following carrots dangling from a stick tied over their heads- always going forward for that sweet carrot but never really taking a real bite of it. And whoever told you that meat eating was one of the causes behind loneliness, wars and other negative things going on in society? Yes. As the saying goes, you are what you eat. Animals live in fear of each other and therefore defend their dear lives by living in hiding in tall trees or deep holes and burrows. When we eat such creatures who die in fear, what should we expect- a world where every man is after the others well being? I'll let your mind go off on this topic for yourself, or email me and we can discuss.
The conclusion of class was this: greater love has no man than to use his life, intelligence, wealth, and whatever else he may have for the benefit of another. When we educate people out of love, they will sense that love and try to make life more pleasant around them. A monks' life is dedicated to this service for humanity at large- teaching and telling what no one else took the time to tell or teach.

H.H. Bhakti Caitanya Swami : A class I gave in Mayapur on the Appearance Day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura

From Sri Mayapur Candrodaya Mandir!

Date:    February 14, 2009
Verse:   Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.23.54
Speaker: HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami
____________________________________

Today is the appearance day of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur. So we will focus particularly particularly on him. First of all let us read the verse first.

indriyarthesu sajjantya prasangas tvayi me krtah
ajanantya param bhavam tathapy astv abhayaya me

TRANSLATION: Not knowing your transcendental situation, I have loved you while remaining attached to the objects of the senses. Nonetheless, let the affinity I have developed for you rid me of all fear.

PURPORT: Devahuti is lamenting her position. As a woman, she had to love someone. Somehow or other, she came to love Kardama Muni, but without knowing of his spiritual advancement. Kardama Muni could understand Devahuti’s heart; generally all women desire material enjoyment. They are called less intelligent because they are mostly prone to material enjoyment. Devahuti laments because her husband had given her the best kind of material enjoyment, but she did not know that he was so advanced in spiritual realization. Her plea was that even though she did not know the glories of her great husband, because she had taken shelter of him she must be delivered from material entanglement. Association with a great personality is most important. In Caitanya-caritamrta Lord Caitanya says that sadhu-sanga [Cc. Madhya 22.83], the association of a great saintly person, is very important, because even if one is not advanced in knowledge, simply by association with a great saintly person one can immediately make considerable advancement in spiritual life. As a woman, as an ordinary wife, Devahuti became attached to Kardama Muni in order to satisfy her sense enjoyment and other material necessities, but actually she associated with a great personality. Now she understood this, and she wanted to utilize the advantage of the association of her great husband.

HH Bhakti Caitanya Swami: So here we can see that the importance of sadhu sanga is being emphasized, being focused on. Srimati Devahuti is appreciating this and of course she is very, very exalted personality. She is not just as Prabhupada mentions in a certain way here that she is not just a women, an ordinary wife but in her humility as a vaishnavi she is thinking herself like that. And she is saying that, “My relationship with you is really just being based on my material propensities, my tendencies to become attached to a man, to my husband so I became attached to you like that. But now, now I understand more, now I can appreciate you more. You are very great transcendental personality. So particularly now at this later stage in our relationship I would really like to get the benefit of that. I need some transcendental mercy from your transcendental association. I need some transcendental benefit from the transcendental side of our
relationship.”

So as Srila Prabhupada says here, Lord Caitanya Himself emphasized this point:

’sadhu-sanga’, ’sadhu-sanga’ — sarva-sastre kaya
lava-matra sadhu-sange sarva-siddhi haya

(CC Madhya 22.54) That association with a sadhu is so extremely valuable, so incomparably valuable that even if you have just a very little bit, just by little bit of it, it can be enough to give you all perfection. You can go back to godhead just on the basis of that, lava-matra, just momentary, a fraction of a second of association.

It is so powerful that even many lifetimes of material association, bad association of all sorts and with all compounds and all adds up and is stored up there within the heart that you have just a moment’s association with the sadhu and then despite all the rubbish accumulated, over practically an indefinite time in the material world its all wiped out. Completely wiped out, finished. And not only that you come just come back to a clean state, a zero position but you are delivered back home back to godhead just on the basis of that. This is something truly unique and it should be appreciated as such.

And there is one verse in the 9th canto of Srimad Bhagavatam 4th chapter where the Supreme Personality of Godhead is instructing Durvasa Muni who is in the process of coming to his senses having offended Maharaj Ambarish and then achieved an extremely dangerous position as a result.

So the Supreme Lord is preaching to Durvasa Muni appreciating the value, the importance of the devotees and one thing He says is that, “The devotees are so important, their association is so valuable, the devotees are so wonderful. They are extremely dear to Me. And even if you are not really a devotee if you just become a devotee of the devotee somehow you become attached to a real devotee. Then you still become very dear to Me, to the Supreme Lord.”

So perhaps certainly in some respect this is our position today. We cannot claim to be very much as devotees or anything. But we are struggling to maintain our position as aspiring devotees or make a little progress somehow. But we have had the good fortune of the association of Srila Prabhupada. We are having the good fortune of the ongoing association of Srila Prabhupada through his instructions, his books, his lectures, his movement in so many ways and his sincere followers. And Srila Prabhupada was, is a devotee of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta, he is certainly great, great devotee. And Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, what a devotee! What an amazing devotee!

So through this connection in parampara if we remain attached to the lotus feet of the devotee, Srila Prabhupada who is a devotee of the devotee Srila Bhakti Siddhanta then in this way we can achieve all good fortune. There is no doubt. But there is no limit even Prabhupada explains that the same good fortune that Arjuna got form hearing Bhagavad-gita from the lotus lips of Lord Sri Krishna himself that same good fortune is available to us. Same good fortune! So it is like that.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur such an exceptional devotee, certainly at his time in the class of his own. He appeared on this day at 3:30 in the afternoon of Feb 6th 1874. 135 years ago he appeared in this
world in Jagannath Puri. In that house it is still this on the main road of Jagannath Puri. So he appeared there. Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur his father of course who himself is most exalted eternal associate of the lord.

He had been praying, “Please send me a ray of Vishnu. I want to carry on this movement; I want to see this movement carried on. So please send me someone who can help me and who can continue on the mission.” So he was praying like that just as Advaita Acarya whose appearance day it was little while ago, couple of weeks ago, as he was praying seeing the degraded condition of people in Kali-yuga. So we need some special mercy. We need someone to descend. Otherwise in this situation what will happen? So Srila
Bhaktivinod Thakur have also been thinking like that. There is only so much I can do but we need someone also who can push this on and carry on this mission and really drive this mission deep into the heart of a Kali-yuga society and change the world as Lord Caitanya wanted and predicted.

So it is a fact actually that Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur appeared in answer to that prayer. Initially Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur was of course very hopeful, it wasn’t exactly clear immediately although it
became more clear as time continued and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta gradually started to grow up. It is described we heard, Srila Prabhupada himself has described how few months later, five months later or so he appeared in February. The Ratha yatra in Puri is usually in July. So at that time approximately five months later the Ratha yatra festival happened and the Ratha yatra cart were proceeding down that road to the Gundica temple and as it happens sometimes, they stopped. They happened to stop right outside the house of Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur. It happens they stop sometime somewhere along that road but normally they carry on shortly after that. But this case they stopped there for three days, right outside the house.

So Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur’s wife she took that opportunity to take that little child and climb up on the Ratha yatra cart. Prabhupada explains because she was the wife of big magistrate, very important person and very important in fact in the administration of the temple. So she was able to that. She climbed up somehow, got up on the chariot and presented the child to Lord Jagannath Himself, placed the child at Lord’s lotus feet.
Spontaneously, five-month-old child, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta reached out to the lotus feet of Lord Jagannatha. At that moment a garland fell from Jagannatha and just fell over on Srila Bhakti Siddhanta and immediately she and everyone who was there appreciated, “Ah! Special mercy! There is some special significance here.”

So this was a type of sign and Bhaktivinode Thakur took it in that way. Actually at birth Srila Bhaktisiddhanta was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his chest tightly. Tightly, not just hanging there but
tightly around his chest. And it made a mark, left an impression on his chest. That was also taken to be an important sign of whom he is, where he is coming from in the previous lifetime. So like this these things happened and Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur gradually started to become more hopeful that, “Perhaps here we have that person who is the answer to our prayers.”(Please don’t mind if I refer to my notes from time to time.)

So let’s see. In October that year Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s wife and the children moved to Ranaghat. You may know Ranaghat  its on the way from Calcutta. Somehow or the other it has become the stronghold of the Christians in the meantime. Still that Ranaghat, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta stayed there for the first three or four years of his life under the care of his mother. He was the 6th child of Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, the 4th son and the third child 3rd child by Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur’s second wife, Srimati  Bhagavati devi.

So as we mention there were these signs. Perhaps he is the great transcendental personality who has appeared here. Not just as some conditioned soul, but as some exalted spiritual person to really make a
contribution to the mission of Krishna consciousness. Another thing happened which also Prabhupada mentions. In fact Prabhupada mentions in the famous class on the disappearance day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta. I think it was Los Angeles 1969 or thereabouts,(Someone in audience confirms the year) 1968.

One day in the summer Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was three or four, that sort of age. So this was the summer, it was mango season. And in those days mango season meant mangos are free, there are too many mangoes, you can’t sell them! They are free. So in every house on the table there is a pile of mango and children, anybody can take just one anytime. So there was one very beautiful mango sitting on the table. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta as a small child, he took it that, “Here’s another mango is for me.” This was just the practice. The children could just pick up mango take it. So he picked it up and started eating. But actually it was unoffered and Srila Bhaktivinode came in just the middle of all this and there is this little three year old child eating the mango but unoffered.

And of course Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur was bringing up Srila Bhakti Siddhanta very much according to the vaisnava standards. So Prabhupada says that Bhaktivinode Thakur mildly rebuked him. Mildly chastised him that, “Oh you have done a very bad thing. This was to be offered to the deity but you have taken it before it was offered.” And even though Srila Bhakti Siddhanta just a small child, from a three year old, we do not expect much in terms of responsibility and soberness from a three or four year old child.

But Srila Bhakti Siddhanta took it so seriously that he took a vow on the spot, “I will never eat mangoes again in this life. I am an offender.” And indeed he maintained this vow. For the rest of his life he never took
mangoes. And of course people would offer him so many things and they would offer mangoes but when they did Srila Bhakti Siddhanta always refuse and say, “No. I cannot. I am an offender.”

So like this we see that these are very clear signs that this is very special devotee who is not just a nice little child devotee but this is a very special devotee. So then Srila Bhaktisiddhanta from his early days also he showed incredible intellect, amazing intellect. He had something like a photographic memory. At the age of seven he memorized Bhagavad-gita. I think very few of us sitting here has done that, I don’t know how many, but perhaps Prahladananda Maharaj!

But Srila Bhakti Siddhanta at the age of 7 had memorized Bhagavad-gita completely. Another sign that this is very special transcendental personality. Also at the age of 7 in 1881 Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur gave Srila Bhakti Siddhanta his first chanting beads. His first tulasi beads for chanting and ordered him. “You must chant everyday.” With children again it’s nice if they chant and previously in our gurukulas there was this
attempt to discipline them make them chant but in many cases it didn’t work very well. But in this case Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur disciplined him like that. “You must chant.” And he chanted everyday. And to not only did he chant everyday. He kept those beads for his whole life. He used the same beads for his entire life, those beads that he was given at the age of 7 by Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur.

And also at the age of 7 around the same time 1881 Bhaktivinode Thakur acquired a Kurma shila, a shaligram shila and Srila Bhakti Siddhanta became very attracted to this and requested his father can I worship this shaligram shila, Kurma shila. So Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur allowed that. From the age of 7 he was worshipping shaligram shila not just some stuff doll deity type in very informal types of deities but actual shaligram shila under the personal supervision of Bhaktivinode Thakur. So it appears that by this time
Bhaktivinode Thakur it was quiet clear to him that we do have someone very special here.

So in 1892, of course there are so many details but we don’t have so much time. In 1892 means he is now 18. He enters Sanskrit school in Calcutta and immediately excelled, immediately was so outstanding. Not just the best but just in a class of his own in Sanskrit studies. That particular Sanskrit school, they were on the  mayavada side. Philosophically they were following Panini’s system of grammar, which of course is the main system of grammar. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta under one teacher. There was a particular system of Panini’s grammar they were following. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta memorized this in three months and memorized the sandhi rules in three days.

The teacher, one I think Prithvidhar Sharma or something he said, “You shouldn’t rush things like this. You are going too fast.” He said, “Normally people study this grammar for their whole lives.” and he said, “Infact there is a benediction if you study it for your whole life you will get liberation.” And we all know what was so called liberation he was meaning. That was not vaisnava liberation because the whole school at that time was mayavada orientation. So he told Srila Bhakti Siddhanta like this. “You should give more attention to this. And then you will achieve liberation.”

Srila Bhakti Siddhanta there are a number of stories. He was something like a rebellious student. First of all he was more or less on the same level as his teachers as far as understanding the subject, or better than then. Then he of course objected to the mayavada slant. So much when that man said that, “You should study more carefully then you can get impersonal liberation.”

Srila Bhakti Siddhanta said, “Then as of today I reject you. The goal of my life is neither mastery of grammar or liberation. The goal of my life is worship of Hari and developing love for Him. I have been studying the
different Vedas and Vedantas, which you have been trying to teach me only in a secondary way, with that in mind achieving pure Krishna consciousness. So eventually he challenged one of the teachers. It’s a long story. And there was a debate and he defeated that teacher but they became kind of, well he was becoming progressively less popular with the teachers and even with the head master and he and he left the Sanskrit school in 1895.

So then his life started developing different ways. He was working for the king of Tripura for some time. It appears from 1895 to 1900 or something like that. He did some sort of secretarial type of context and also teaching the royal children to some degree. So he was doing that for some time. During this period from 1895 well particularly from 1896 to 1898 he was focusing on astronomy. In those days the Vedic system of astronomy was based on Surya Siddhanta, but the calculations, the system of calculations has to be adjusted every 100 years.

I am not an astronomical person, I don’t know all the details is, but there are some shifting of the heavenly bodies and so therefore the calculations need to be adjusted every 100 years or so. Otherwise you will be calculating Janmashtami to be one day but then it will be the next day, basically. So that the adjustments have not been made for 800 years. So another words the calculations were quite out. So Srila Bhaktisiddhanta very elaborately recalculated everything to bring everything up to date. In this way and other ways he revolutionized astronomy. He revolutionize astronomy and again he was studying under some pandits but very quickly he became much more expert in this science than they were.

During that time 1898 very important thing happened. Well in 1897 Srila Bhaktisiddhanta started observing caturmasya rigidly. He would sleep literally on the earth with no blanket, just sleeping on the earth. He would eat just once a day boiled rice with little, few drops of ghee on it. No salt no spices no vegetables nothing. Just rice. And he would do this for the whole caturmasya period very strictly. And when he would eat he would throw that plain rice on the ground, on the earth. Put his hands behind his back lean forward and eat as much as he could eat without sitting up. As soon as he sat up that was it for the day. That was his way of observing caturmasya. Actually the gopis also during their Katyayani vrata they were observing the same vow. So anyway he was doing that. That was 1897 when he started that.

Then 1898 an important thing happened. Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj arrived in Navadwip and came and met Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur and the two of them became very close associates. This is at Godruma where the house is now. So they became very close and actually and so close that you can say both were taking shelter of each other at certain stage.

Although Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj is following Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur now in our parampara but the relationship was like that. And Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur instructed Srila Bhakti Siddhanta, “I want you to be initiated by this person.” And of course Srila Bhakti Siddhanta he was extremely appreciative of Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj although he was feeling himself unworthy to be accepted by such an extraordinarily renounced devotee, he accepted the instruction of his father.

So we know that story basically. Interesting story. He went to Srila Gaur Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj and asked him very humbly. He said, “Will you please be very merciful and initiate me.”  And basically Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj sort of laughed it off. He said, “Me? Initiate? No.” He said, “I initiated someone once and they cheated me, so I decided never again. So it’s ok don’t worry. Just go and find someone else.”

So Srila Bhakti Siddhanta waited and Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj said, “Well, let me ask Mahaprabhu. Come back in the few days.”So Srila Bhaktisiddhanta came back in a few days and asked, “What did Mahaprabhu say?” And Srila Gaur Kishore said, “Oh I forgot to ask him!” And again he said, “This is not a good idea just find someone else. But again Srila Bhaktisddhanta begged him, “Please ask Mahaprabhu, please.”

And Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj said, “Alright, alright I will ask him. You come back again in a few days.” So after few days Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur came back again and asked Srila Gaura
Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj.  ”So, what did Mahaprabhu say?”

Srila Gaura Kishore Das Babaji Maharaj said, “Yes I asked Mahaprabhu. He didn’t say anything.” And again he said, “You know I think this is not a good idea, go and find someone else.” But then it’s a very deep, extremely deep exchange. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta fell at his lotus feet crying and he repeated that line from one song,

karuna na hoile, kandiya kandiya, prana na rakhibo ara

That, “If you will not be merciful at me then weeping and weeping I will not be able to maintain my life”. So after a little time being together, going back and forth, Gaura Kishore das Babaji Maharaj agreed, “All right, all right, I will initiate you.” So Srila Bhaktisiddhanta took bath in the Ganges and came back and was initiated by Srila Gaura Kishore das Babaji Maharaj. That was January 1900 and afterwards I mean immediately afterwards Srila Bhaktisiddhanta wrote something about the whole experience. Let me read it, or part of it:

“When out of false ego I was thinking I am a great scholar and philosopher in mathematics and philosophy. Let any big pandit come at anytime day or night and I will cut his propositions to pieces. At that time I got the darshan of the lotus feet of Sri Gurudev. He ignored everything that was previously appreciated in me. My truthfulness, my moral and pious life my intellectualism. He ignored them knowing them to be of a little value. When I saw that he ignored whatever I thought was good in me I realized how good he himself must be who could neglect so many “good qualities” in me.

“What inconceivable wealth he possessed. Being neglected by him I understood that there was no one more fallen and contemptible than myself. That was my actual identity. The very things that I would judge to be desirable such as scholarship and upright character, this exalted soul regarded as valueless. I have concluded that within himself this noble personality possess priceless treasure.

“I then pondered that even he is extremely puffed up or is exceedingly merciful. Then I boldly said to my Gurudev, “You are the worshipper of cheater and debauchee Krishna, so why would you be compassionate to someone like me dedicated to ordinary morality?” Humbly and sincerely I prayed to the supreme Lord for his mercy. Later by His grace, the Lord’s grace I recognized that without receiving the blessings of this peerless saint and without serving him nothing good can happen to me. When I accepted that and acted accordingly and then received the transcendental, the causeless unlimited grace of my Sri Gurudev and refuge at his lotus feet I deemed my life fulfilled.

“I have considered my Gurudev to be unequal in vairagya but somewhat short of learning but he reduced to powder my audacity from all book learning. With the mallet of his mercy he revealed that whatever I have judged to be the highest ideal was in fact most low and despicable. When by his grace that instruction first entered my ears my diminutive brain lacked the capacity to accommodate such transcendental knowledge!”

Of course again this is the unlimited natural humility of the pure vaisnava Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur. There is so much more that can be said but I think we are out of time.

Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur ki jai
Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur ki jai
Srila Prabhupada ki jai
Hare Krishna.

(Loud applause from audience.)

Bhakta Chris, New Vrndavan, USA : The Soul of Merton 2-23-09

Inspired by my readings of "Contemplative Prayer" and "Contemplation In A World Of Action" by Thomas Merton

The need for a spiritual guide, a spiritual master, in our lives as aspiring devotees and human beings is of the utmost importance. Of course, I don't need to tell you this, but it is always good to reflect on our sublime relationship with the acarya, whom, by their mercy, is giving us everything we need to know to transcend our mundane selves.

From Contemplative Prayer, Thomas Merton echoes to us that the acarya is there to keep us firmly on the straight and narrow:

"Hence the traditional importance...of the spiritual father, who may be the abbot or another experienced monk capable of guiding the beginner in ways of prayer, and of immediately detecting any sign of misguided zeal and wrong-headed effort. Such a one should be listened to and obeyed, especially when he cautions against the use of certain methods and practices, which he sees to be out of place and harmful in a particular case, or when he declines to accept certain experiences as evidence of progress."

We may have the tendency to think we can advance quicker that we are capable of i.e taking on extra austerities or trying to read pastimes beyond our comprehension. Recently in the ashram here we discussed whether we could take on small austerities such as chanting extra rounds on certain days such on Ekadasi without being ordered to by any particular authority.

We came to the obvious conclusion that it certainly depends on the individual's ability in time, place, and circumstance, and above all, that pride must never come into the equation. A few extra rounds doesn't make one the jagad-guru.

Our own guru or authority may or may not have time to give us direct instructions on such matters, so we have to use our best and most sincere judgment.

Our spiritual master, through his personal example and instructions, is the lifeline we hold onto to become mature and steady in our realizations. As Merton writes, the duty of our teacher\s is practical and heart-rending:

"The work of the spiritual father consists not so much in teaching us a secret and infallible method for attaining to esoteric experiences, but in showing us how to recognize God's grace and his will, how to be humble and patient, how to develop insight into our own difficulties, and how to remove the main obstacles keeping us from becoming men of prayer."

Merton's main point here is that one must always keep himself with the understanding that he is a spiritual "beginner", and through this humble and submissive attitude before the teacher, one will not fall into the various traps of insincerity that line the razor's edge. Merton writes:

"One cannot begin to face the real difficulties of the life of prayer and meditation unless one is first perfectly content to be a beginner and really experience himself as one who knows little or nothing, and has a desperate need to learn the bare rudiments. Those who think they know from the beginning will never, in fact, come to know anything...We do not want to be beginners. But let us be convinced of the fact that we will never be anything else but beginners, all our life!"

In this way, we can lay ourselves as atoms at the lotus feet of our guru, Prabhupada, and Krsna, and beg simply for causeless devotional service life after life. Whatever ability we recieve is Krsna's mercy, and we must never think we are the ones who "know" how to do anything. We are simply instruments.

Here is Prabhupada fully crystallizing this sublime sentiment in his purport to BG 4:34

"Satisfaction of the self-realized spiritual master is the secret of advancement in spiritual life. Inquiries and submission constitute the proper combination for spiritual understanding. Unless there is submission and service, inquiries from the learned spiritual master will not be effective. One must be able to pass the test of the spiritual master, and when he sees the genuine desire of the disciple, he automatically blesses the disciple with genuine spiritual understanding. In this verse, both blind following and absurd inquiries are condemned. Not only should one hear submissively from the spiritual master, but one must also get a clear understanding from him, in submission and service and inquiries. A bona fide spiritual master is by nature very kind toward the disciple. Therefore when the student is submissive and is always ready to render service, the reciprocation of knowledge and inquiries becomes perfect."

H.H. Mukunda Goswami : Is Bhakti Fundamentally Sentiment?

'Ecstatic' feelings may be interpreted as quasi mystical visitations. How does this relate to the importance of Harinam Sankirtana and Srila Prabhupada's insistence on examinations and scholarship? Is bhakti primarily 'feeling?' I thought Drutakarma prabhu addressed this question nicely when in 2000 he wrote : "This clash of images --science and street religion - is nothing new. For ages, the bhakti tradition in India has always been a mixture of two seemingly contradictory elements -- the emotional statement of bhakti through public chanting and profoundly deep scholarship."

Subuddhi Krishna dasa, Chicago, USA : Pearls of wisdom - 126

One can attain the path of liberation from material bondage only by rendering service to highly advanced spiritual personalities. Whether one wants to merge into the Lord's existence or wants to associate with the Personality of Godhead, one should render service to the mahâtmâs. For those who are not interested in such activities, who associate with people fond of women and sex, the path to hell is wide open. The mahâtmâs are equipoised. They do not see any difference between one living entity and another. They are very peaceful and are fully engaged in devotional service. They are devoid of anger, and they work for the benefit of everyone. They do not behave in any abominable way. Such people are known as mahâtmâs.

Sita-pati dasa, AU : Arguing against "Evolution" = Falling into a Trap

Don't get into arguments about Evolution. The doctrine of "Evolution" or modern "Darwinism" is actually a composite of two distinct things - one of which is scientific and has a lot of empirical evidence to support it, the other of which is pure speculation.

I'm talking about Genetic Mutation + Natural Selection (Darwin's actual hypothesis, which is supported by a huge amount of observation), and Life From Chemicals (never demonstrated).

Here's a diagram:

You should never argue against these two things as if they were one thing. When you do that you end up looking unscientific (because you end up arguing against things that are scientific), and you help your opponent link "Life from Chemicals" with real science.

The Catholic Church and the Church of England have finally figured this out, two hundred years after they drove science and the scientific method into the hands of atheist ideology at sword point.

Don't argue against "Evolution". It's a trap. Clearly define the situation and the terms of discussion.

Those who put their full faith in the words of guru and Krishna and thus fully absorb themselves 24/7 in Krishna consciousness qualify themselves to break through the multi-layered coverings of the material universe and enter to the other side of reality, that amazingly sublime spiritual sky where life is eternal and all forms of misery and ignorance...

Vrndavana Vinodini dd, Toronto, Canada : If Only...

...I could be in three places at once! The last time I was in Mayapur it was so easy...my Guru Maharaja was here and so I would just attend all his programs. But this time around my Guru Maharaja is unfortunately not here but all my siksa gurus and favorite devotees are and it's just so hard to choose which programs to attend when they are all going on at the same time.

Yesterday was a perfect example. At 6:30pm HH Jayaptaka Swami was giving a question and answer class in a pandal by the Conch building. At the same time the Bhakti-sastri graduation ceremony was about to start with a drama that the ladies were going to perform and if that wasn't enough, to add to the sweet confusion, HH Sivarama Swami was leading bhajans under the stars on the top floor of Vaisnava Academy! What to do??? So many places to go and only one useless body to try to absorb all the nectar!

Well this is what I did...I stayed for a few minutes of HH JPS class and then went to see the drama the girls put on at the Bhakti-sastri graduation ceremony which was fantastic! After that I speed walked to Vaisnava Academy and just rode the magic carpet of HH Sivarama Swami's bhakti-soaked bhajans....it was just incredible. Imagine being on the rooftop, starring at the star-kissed night sky and being surrounded by the holy name. It was awesome...definitely one of my highlights thus far in this year's Gaura Purnima festival.

As I walked back to my room, the holy name was still ringing in my ears. What a wonderful state of being to be in before calling it a night.

But now I'm stuck with almost the same situation! In a few hours HH Jayapataka Swami will be giving class once again at 6:00pm and then at 7:00pm HG Aindra Prabhu is going to be leading kirtans in the temple room and HH Sivarama Swami (and possibly Madhava prabhu and HH BBGS) will be leading moonlight bhajans at Vaisnava Academy! It's just not fair that we have to choose! :D Oh well...let's see what happens....I think I'll most likely go to class and then head over to Vaisnava Academy for an hour and then join in the kirtans at the temple...but it's just never enough!

What can I say....this year's Gaura Purnima festivities look like they are going to be beyond memorable. Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for making this all possible and allowing us to swim in the tears of your love for Krsna.

Sita-pati dasa, AU : ISKCON - Conservative or Liberal?

In an earlier article on his website (As ISKCON Members Move Apart) Krishna Kirti prabhu wrote about the splitting up of ISKCON into two distinct groups - one orthodox, one reform.

Personally I think such an idea limits the scope of ISKCON. ISKCON is the "International Society for Krishna Consciousness".

A society is a broad, diverse organization, not a narrow, heterogeneous one. An institution, such as a monastery or the "brahminical class" is focused and narrowly defined, however a society is characterised by diversity and difference.

Here's an example:

Question: Is US Society conservative or liberal?
Answer: It's both.

Here's a picture to demonstrate:

The US has liberal and conservative elements within it, and it has an overarching structure that is able to encompass those differences. No-one suggests that "conservative Americans should cede from the Union" - oh, actually some people do, but they are widely regarded as nuts.

Every healthy society requires diversity, both genetically and ideologically. Groupthink is extremely dangerous. Individual differences must be balanced out, however, by loyalty to an overall structure that encompasses all sides and holds them in tension.

The GBC is most likely to position "ISKCON" in this way. It's meant to be a society, not a conservative group within a society, or a liberal group within a society. People who talk about ceding from ISKCON to be conservative are actually positing ISKCON as a conservative group within another society which acts as the overarching framework.

Krishna Kirti's article about the two different ISKCONs that he sees forming in the future actually maps more closely to this:

Every religion has a number of different standards for people who participate at different levels of commitment and in different roles. For example, Buddhist monks follow one set of rules, lay people another. Christian pastors follow one set of rules, church volunteer staff another, and church members yet another. There are different strokes for different folks.

Talking about making one standard for everyone is not talking about a society. It's talking about one particular group within a wider society.

Trying to make everyone do exactly the same thing is unhealthy.

We have to learn to be true to our own principles and allow others to be true to theirs. Our own personal example is the greatest testimony and inspiration to bring others to a higher standard. Conservative minded persons in ISKCON should focus on running monasteries and seminaries, and in this way produce people who can influence others in the society through their personal example. Trying to impose standards on others through force will be spectacularly unsuccessful.

Here's a final picture to emphasize the point. It takes humility to stay in ISKCON. We have to recognise diversity. You don't have to agree with everyone or everything, but the world is a big place, and there is plenty of opportunity to demonstrate the fruits of your realization in practice within the bounds of the wider ISKCON Society.

Personally I can respect the right of others to hold different views, and that this divergence of views is necessary for the society - but whenever it gets a little tough, I look at this picture and laugh:

Jauvana Prabhu, ACBSP : Actions Louder than Words

In an article just published in the Sampradaya Sun on Scroll Paintings in Lord Jagannath's Orissa, Part 2, the author, Asis K. Chakrabarti, extols the virtues of what he calls, "Jagannath Consciousness."

Here is what he writes:

"Jagannath consciousness has become ubiquitous, radiating near and far. He is the symbol of universal brotherhood. His principal preamble is, 'Humanity on earth is but one family.'

"It is precisely for the very reason that various sects and religions such as Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakta, Buddhist and Jain traditions have transcended barriers to mingle and blend immaculately in Lord Jagannath. Lord Jagannath also encompasses the animistic tribal religions. Before Him, starting from the tribals, others like the Brahmin, untouchables/chandals, sudras, or even the Muslims - all have become His children traversing on a single path."

If the author of this article really believes what he writes, then let him explain why it is that no one is allowed into the Jagannath temple at Puri unless they can prove they are Indian-born Hindus. It is easy to use flowery language. Let Mr. Chakrabarti and the respectable brahmin priests of Puri display a universal vision of brotherhood under the fatherhood of Lord Jagannath by acting as servants rather than as racists. By excluding others on the basis of skin color or nationality, they are proclaiming that Lord Jagannath, under their care, is not Lord of the Universe, but Lord of a racist religion.

For us who are not born in India, it is no problem to pay our respects to Lord Jagannath from a distance, and to benefit by tasting His transcendental prasadam. Maybe it is better for us in order to understand our own fallen condition. Even Haridas Thakur, the namacarya personally selected by Lord Caitanya, did not complain about not having darshan of Lord Jagannath, due to his being born in a Muslim family.

But if the servants of Lord Jagannath want people of the world to take notice of the true personality of their master, Parambrahman Sri Jagannath, then they would welcome every innocent visitor to His temple. With their open minds and hearts, they could show the world the non-sectarian munificent spirit of pure love that He is.

The same prescription applies to anyone who wants to impress others with the value of their belief system. It is actions, not words, that count. Don't talk the talk unless you walk the walk. The words we write and the truths we speak are only as eloquent or as egregious as our behavior.

Gauranga Kishore das,USA : So Much Verbiage

Lately I've been a little frustrated with the general lack ability or willingness of most people to connect their social and political ideals with thier lifestyles and more particularly Krishna consciousness. I made this this little collage to try to illustrate it to help connect the dots, it needs more work, there is alot more ideas that need to be include but I like the idea want to try to develop it.

Then I found this quote from Thomas Merton in his introduction to Prabhupada's Gita which sort of summed up how I was feeling.

"The Gita can be seen as the main literary support for the great religious civilization of India, the oldest surviving culture in the world. The present translation and commentary is another manifestation of the permanent living importance of the Gita. It brings to the West a salutary reminder that our highly activistic and one-sided culture is faced with a crisis that may end in self-destruction because it lacks the inner depth of an authentic metaphysical consciousness. Without such depth, our moral and political protestations are just so much verbiage."

Kripamoya dasa, UK : Half-term Holidays: Trees, Gardens, and Violins

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, London

This past week has been the school half-term holidays and I’ve been mixing service at the temple with some overdue time with my son, Mali, 11. My daughters Tulasi, 19, and Jahnavi, 21, have both been extremely busy as usual, studying at their respective London universities. This week Tulasi has been learning about Caesarean sections ( and witnessing some new procedures in that field) and Jahnavi has been polishing a piece of English coursework as well as a few days work assignment with a children’s speech therapist. They’ve also both been rehearsing their dance school’s piece for a London-wide bharatanatyam show at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank tonight. Prestigious venue.

If that wasn’t enough, Jahnavi has also been practising her Carnatic violin pieces for last night’s south Indian music concert at the Winston Churchill Hall in Ruislip. Her teacher, Sri Gnanasundaram, disciple of the acclaimed violinist Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, certainly puts on a good show. All the students of his Nadasuddha school were there last night, all clean, sparkling and well rehearsed. Violins, vinas, mridangams, and flutes all polished and tuned. Beginners began the evening and accomplished students completed it along with their teacher playing on stage. All I had to do, apart from show up and listen, was to perform the arati ceremony on stage while the last piece was being played. It was a bhajan by Tyagaraja concerning the importance of developing love for Sri Ramachandra. I used an awful lot of camphor for the arati flame and when I turned toward the 300 Tamils in the audience I think they appreciated that southern touch.

Afterwards I was approached by some asking if I could say prayers for their loved ones back in Sri Lanka. They had not heard from them and had heard much bad news from the war-torn north of the island. Of course I said I would, and did so this morning. A fund-raising concert will be held on the evening of 14th March at the same venue.

But I was speaking of Mali wasn’t I? We got to spend some good time together this week. In amongst other things, one day was spent at Kew Gardens. My wife, Guru Charana Padma (Guru to old friends, Padma to younger ones) is a keen gardener and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew have to be amongst the best in the world for conservation and research. There are two Vaishnavas who work there now, and one, Krishan, is involved in a project to preserve all the world’s seeds at very low temperetaures in bomb-proof bunkers. The way the world is going we will need those seeds some day. There is a sister project like this in Scandinavia too. It is Kew’s 250th anniversary this year, marking its origins in 1759 with Augusta, the Princess of Wales.

Mali likes science, maths and nature and is at home in places where he can explore animals, fish, and a wide variety of plants. He’d brought a friend along and the first place they wanted to go was the new Treetop Walk. It’s a long way up at 90 feet above ground and I gulped a few times when walking up the spiral staircase. The trick, as always, is not to look down.

It was a cold day, so we next made for the temperate glass pavilion, followed by the tropical. The Kew gardeners are very good at what they do, and it was like being in India with huge banana trees, date palms, henna bushes, jasmine, jackfruit, tulasi and so many more. Then Africa and Australia - all once former British colonies. There was a special section for Lord Howe’s Island in New Zealand, ‘the last paradise on Earth.’ Certainly looked heavenly. Over then to the Princess of Wales Pavilion, which is more or less heaven with hundreds of differently shaped and coloured orchids.

Orchid display at Kew Gardens. Photo by Niran Nana

Emily Bronte compares beautiful fragrant roses to love, and holly to friendship, with the former as the inferior of the two. Why? Because roses bloom and disappear while holly remains bright and green always. She even wrote a poem about it. At Kew there is a Holly Walk with all the world’s species of holly on display. On a cold day, I could appreciate her words.

My next outing with Mali was to the forest. More precisely, to take part in an aerial assault course known by the cheery, rather innocent name of Go Ape. Erected in nearby Wendover Woods on the road to Aylesbury, it is, quite possibly, one of the most frightening things an adult can do for fun. Someone obviously clever said that you should do one thing every day that scares you. Yesterday I did enough for 39 days - all of them 40-50 feet up in the air.

After half an hour of safety training from a young man who looked like he climbs mountains before breakfast for fun, we tried out our newly accquired skills with carabinos, D-rings, and zip-wire pulleys and various ropes. Fully togged out in safety harnesses, and with the holy name of Sri Narasimha, the protector of the devotees, on our lips, we gradually climbed into the forest canopy and the early morning sunshine.

Again I found that being scared of falling, a painful death, and possible rebirth as a pine tree is a very good way to instantly take shelter of Krishna. I can recommend it to you, dear reader. And should you be slightly disconcerted by the mental image of a mature sadhaka walking the tightrope, swinging on a rope through space into a net, or crawling through swinging wooden barrels while trying not to look down at the dizzying forest floor miles beneath him, can I say that it it a great way to rise above the mind. You control your mind - or you suffer.

Mali and I did get a few moments to talk while we were up in the trees. We talked of how important it is in life to stay connected to Krishna, just as we took care to stay clipped on to the cables with our carabinos. That you can rise above fear (which is ‘what might happen’) by focusing your mind on the goal (which is ‘what I want to happen.’) And most important lesson of all: leaping off a tree into space is much more fun when you chant: GAURANGA!

After three 500 feet-long zipwire nightmares through the tops of the trees, by which point my flesh had turned to jelly, Mali turned to me with a big smile and said: “That was great, when can we do it again?”

(For a view of the zipwire nightmare see below)

On the subject of divorce, Srila Prabhupada humorously remarked, "Don't get married. Remain brahmacari. That is the solution."

ISKCON Education : The Test of Education

In the last week of the last year of school, students sweat at the thought of the final exam. When they\'ve passed their exams and earned their degrees, they\'ll be entitled to call themselves educated. But the Vedic culture has a different standard. The sage Canakya, whose proverbs Srila Prabhupada would often quote, tested a person\'s education by three questions—questions of character and ethics.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA : Radha and Krishna Are Always Together

“We are Krsna’s parts and parcels and have been created to give pleasure to Krsna. The chief pleasure potency is Radharani, and so Radha-Krsna are always together. “

EK 5: Knowing Krsna’s Energies

Along the road from Bahulaban to the temple there are two trees that are grown together. They have twisted around each other and are joined in two places, once nearer the ground and again higher up. Note how they started on one side of each other and then grew around to the other side, as if dancing.

Here is the detail of how inseparable they have become, literally grown into each other.

trees-grown-together-detail1

I almost envy young people who will be able to watch these trees grow and see how they will look 50 years from now.

They are right next to the road and can be seen from a car if you know where to look, just as Krishna is everywhere if we take the time to slow down and look for Him.

Coming in from Rte 250, you pass Bahulaban in the lowest part of your journey then go up a steep hill and the road turns left at the top. You pass Jeff Bock’s house on the right above the road (where they recently added an addition on the backside of the house). There is then a part where there are trees on both sides of the road before you come out at Madhavananda and Harinama’s below the road on the left.

These trees are between those two houses on the left side (downhillside) of the road  as you go towards the temple. They are right next to the road rightof way, within 10 feet (3 meters) of the asphalt. About in the middleish part between the houses.

I think they are beautiful and worth noticing. The best way to find them is to walk that section of the road. If you are driving don’t look too hard or you might end up having an accident.  :-)

Japa Group : Letter From China

Recently I got this nice letter from a devotee in China...he talks about speed and the importance of focusing on the sound vibration:
Dear Rasa Rasika:
Please accept my most humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Thanks for adding me in facebook. One of your articles in krishna.com reminded me of a thing. In the past when I chant mantra, I am inclined to chant too fast, so I got it blurred and often lost sounds, so even if I focused fully on the sound of the names, I could only taste partial nectar, could not make more progress. This is really a bad
habit, I learned it the hard way. Now I slow down and so I can taste the transcendental love for Krishna, it's super sweet. I hope to hear from you and have your association and serve you. Thanks.
Here is my reply:
Dear _____,

Thank you for your message...nice to hear from you. Your realisations about slowing down a little and really relishing the Holy names is very nice to hear....Srila Prabhupada told us to mainly focus on hearing and pronounciation and then speed will come naturally as we make progress.
Here is a quote from a letter written by Srila Prabhupada about this aspect of speed:

"Chanting japa should be done early in the morning with full concentration preferably during the Brahma Muhurta time. Concentrate fully on the sound vibration of the mantra, pronouncing each name distinctly and gradually your speed in chanting will increase naturally. Do not worry so much about chanting fast, most important is the hearing."
Letter from Srila Prabhupada 6/1/72

Please come along to the Japa Room if you would like to associate with devotees http://www.thejaparoom.com - 1st session is conducted at http://www.krishna.com/en/japalive

Please stay in touch about your Japa, it would be nice to hear from you.
